Originally published in Italian in 1976, this book describes the methods scientists use to investigate the physical world. It is ideal for students and teachers of science and the philosophy of science. It is both a high-level popularization and a critical appraisal of these methods, describing important advances in physics and analyzing the historical development, value, reliability and philosophical implications of the way physicists approach the problems confronting them. The introductory chapter on the meaning of physical theories and the mathematical (...) tools used to develop them is followed by a general discussion on the foundations of physics under four major headings: the physics of the reversible, the physics of the irreversible, microphysics, and cosmology. Throughout, the subject matter of physical theories is linked to discussion of the attendant philosophical and epistemological implications, such as the validity of the theories, inductive inference, causal explanation, probability, the role of observation and the reality of physical objects. Cannabis use in some individuals can meaningfully introduce de novo risk for the initiation of opioid use and development of opioid use disorder. These risks may be particularly high during adolescence when cannabis use may disrupt critical periods of neurodevelopment. Current research studying the combination of genetic and environmental factors involved in substance use disorders is poorly understood. More research is needed, particularly to identify which adolescents are most at risk and to develop effective interventions addressing contributing factors such as (...) trauma and psychiatric comorbidity. During the past four decades, the Netherlands played a leading role in the debate about euthanasia and assisted suicide. Despite the claim that other countries would soon follow the Dutch legalization of euthanasia, only Belgium and the American state of Oregon did. In many countries, intense discussions took place. This article discusses some major contributions to the discussion about euthanasia and assisted suicide as written by Nigel Biggar, Arthur J. Dyck, Neil M. Gorsuch, and John Keown. They share a (...) concern that legalization will undermine a society's respect for the inviolability and sanctity of life. Moreover, the Report of the House of Lords Select Committee on the Assisted Dying for the Terminally Ill Bill is analyzed. All studies use ethical, theological, philosophical, and legal sources. All these documents include references to experiences from the Netherlands. In addition, two recent Dutch documents are analyzed which advocate further liberalization of the Dutch euthanasia practice, so as to include infants and elderly people "suffering from life". We present a game mechanic called pseudo-visibility for games inhabited by non-player characters (NPCs) driven by reinforcement learning (RL). NPCs are incentivized to pretend they cannot see pseudo-visible players: the training environment simulates an NPC to determine how the NPC would act if the pseudo-visible player were invisible, and penalizes the NPC for acting differently. NPCs are thereby trained to selectively ignore pseudo-visible players, except when they judge that the reaction penalty is an acceptable tradeoff (e.g., a guard might accept (...) the penalty in order to protect a treasure because losing the treasure would hurt even more). We describe an RL agent transformation which allows RL agents that would not otherwise do so to perform some limited self-reflection to learn the training environments in question. (shrink)

Este artigo analisa a crítica de Arthur C. Danto à hermenêutica enquanto teoria que, segundo ele, incorre em uma noção de “interpretação profunda” que exclui a referência ao artista. Apesar dessa crítica, analisaremos a proximidade entre uma noção de interpretação da hermenêutica de Paul Ricœur à noção de interpretação que Danto propõe na sua teoria da arte. Nosso foco é a noção de interpretação “transfigurativa” que concerne à transformação do objeto comum em obra de arte. Essa contribuição de Danto (...) para a análise da obra de arte permite aproximar sua noção de interpretação e a de Ricœur pelo que elas têm em comum: a ênfase no questionamento do real por meio da obra de arte e no modo como a obra é constituída por meio de uma interpretação e de uma transfiguração. Danto e Ricœur abordam as obras referindo-se a noções de interpretação que resultam em processos de redescrição e de transfiguração. (shrink)

A fundamental question asked in modal logic is whether a given theory is consistent. But consistent with what? A typical way to address this question identifies a choice of background knowledge axioms (say, S4, D, etc.) and then shows the assumptions codified by the theory in question to be consistent with those background axioms. But determining the specific choice and division of background axioms is, at least sometimes, little more than tradition. This paper introduces generic theories for propositional modal logic (...) to address consistency results in a more robust way. As building blocks for background knowledge, generic theories provide a standard for categorical determinations of consistency. We argue that the results and methods of this paper help to elucidate problems in epistemology and enjoy sufficient scope and power to have purchase on problems bearing on modalities in judgement, inference, and decision making. This book gathers together for the first time an important body of texts written between 1672 and 1686 by the great German philosopher and polymath Gottfried Leibniz. These writings, most of them previously untranslated, represent Leibniz's sustained attempt on a problem whose solution was crucial to the development of his thought, that of the composition of the continuum. The volume begins with excerpts from Leibniz's Paris writings, in which he tackles such problems as whether the infinite division of matter entails (...) perfect points, whether matter and space can be regarded as true wholes, whether motion is truly continuous, and the nature of body and substance. Comprising the second section is Pacidius Philalethi, Leibniz's brilliant dialogue of late 1676 on the problem of the continuity of motion. In the selections of the final section, from his Hanover writings of 1677-1686, Leibniz abandons his earlier transcreationism and atomism in favor of the theory of corporeal substance, where the reality of body and motion is founded in substantial form or force.Leibniz's texts (one in French, the rest in Latin) are presented with facing-page English translations, together with an introduction, notes, appendixes containing related excerpts from earlier works by Leibniz and his predecessors, and a valuable glossary detailing important terms and their translations. This is a new edition, revised and expanded, of a seminal work in the logic and philosophy of time, originally published in 1968. Arthur N. Prior was the founding father of temporal logic. His work has attracted increased attention in the decades since his death: its influence stretches beyond philosophy and logic to computer science and formal linguistics. Prior's fundamental ideas about the logic of time are presented here along with his investigations into the formal properties of time and (...) tense. Already in 1969 Prior had been planning a new edition of Papers on Time and Tense, to incorporate his more recent work. Because of his untimely death this plan was never followed through--till now. Seven important papers have been added to the original selection, as well as a comprehensive bibliography of his work and an illuminating interview with his widow, Mary Prior, about his life and work. In addition, the Polish logic which made the original book difficult for many readers has been replaced by standard logical notation. This new edition will secure the classic status of the book. English Summary: This book focuses on how the Parmenides, one of the most mysterious Platonic dialogues, and more particularly the first hypothesis of the second part of the dialogue, was received and understood by the ancient writers claiming Plato. French Description: Ce livre se concentre sur la facon dont le Parmenide, un des dialogues platoniciens les plus mysterieux, et plus particulierement la premiere hypothese de la deuxieme partie du dialogue, a ete recu et compris par les auteurs antiques se reclamant (...) de Platon. Ce parcours historique a propos de la reception du Parmenide permet de mettre en evidence les presupposes exegetiques, parfois implicites, qui ont conduit a voir dans ce dialogue, tantot un exercice ou un traite logique, tantot une exposition d'une realite ontologique fondamentale, tantot la mise en evidence d'un principe transcendant et d'une theologie paienne systematique. L'etude des lectures antiques de la premiere hypothese du Parmenide presente en effet un triple interet, essentiel dans l'histoire de la philosophie occidentale, et que cet ouvrage analyse en detail : Un interet hermeneutique : l'etude ici presentee eclaire l'impense des lectures modernes de ce texte majeur. Un interet historique : l'auteur montre comment le Parmenide, loin d'etre un dialogue parmi d'autres, est le lieu ou s'est invente le neoplatonisme comme phenomene unitaire, construit autour de l'existence d'un principe radicalement transcendant, source de toute realite. Un interet proprement philosophique : le principe est a la fois en relation avec ce dont il est le principe, et transcendant a l'univers qu'il rend possible ; comment reconcilier sans contradiction transcendance et causalite, et parler de ce qui excede tout discours? L'etude examine precisement la maniere dont les neoplatoniciens, par une theorie originale de la negation, ont tente de trouver une reponse a ces difficultes. Dans cette histoire antique du Parmenide, les coups de force hermeneutiques traduisent de nouvelles configurations de pensee ; meme si l'enigme du texte leur resiste, leur etude permet de dresser une histoire originale des platonismes antiques. The paper presents an analysis and interpretation of axiology and ethics as seen by the writer and philosopher Ayn Rand. The author follows the assumption that, in a situation where indifference is observed with regard to values (cf. Simmel, Sloterdijk), a return of philosophical reasoning to the idea of objectivity of values could be worthwhile. Therefore, he examines a specific type of axiological objectivism that can be found in Rand’s work. In the present paper, the suggested comparison with Baden neo-Kantism (...) as well as phenomenological axiology serves to capture the specifics of Rand’s axiological approach. These lie in placing emphasis on such a relationship between facts and values in which values result from the facts of reality, as well as in the very understanding of the objectivity of values that Rand identifies with long-term life goals and identifies them as an objective necessity for an individual’s life. Following the analysis of Rand’s axiology, the author focuses on her understanding of ethics, which he places in contrast to Kant’s deontology, as well as morality, which he views through the prism of a business relationship based on the exchange of values. The aim of the paper is to, by means of an analysis and interpretation of Rand’s ideas, show that objective values can be understood as a necessary prerequisite for consequential ethics and an individual living a happy life without being anchored in transcendence or social consensus. We study whether it is possible to generalise Seidenfeld et al.’s representation result for coherent choice functions in terms of sets of probability/utility pairs when we let go of Archimedeanity. We show that the convexity property is necessary but not sufficient for a choice function to be an infimum of a class of lexicographic ones. For the special case of two-dimensional option spaces, we determine the necessary and sufficient conditions by weakening the Archimedean axiom.

At the end of the Second World War, the figure of Gandhi haunts political philosophy as it wrestles with the task of justifying violence in the name of history. The story begins with Arthur Koestler’s Darkness at noon in 1938. Gandhi’s name appears during a discussion between Roubachof and Ivanof. A few years later (1946), Koestler publishes in French a book entitled Le Yogi et le commissaire, analysed by Merleau-Ponty in Humanisme et terreur (1946–1947). Camus replies in L’Homme révolté (...) (1951). Ricœur’s thinking, examined in the present article, has its own place in this debate. At stake is our own knowledge of the conditions under which the rejection and condemnation of violence might, in fact, accommodate violence. (shrink)

Ce livre ne parle pas de religion. Son but n'est pas de plaider la cause d'une quelconque confession, avec ses dogmes et ses préceptes, mais d'examiner la question de savoir s'il existe un être suprême, suffisamment distinct du monde pour qu'on puisse l'appeler "Dieu". Il s'agit donc d'une recherche purement philosophique, appuyée sur les seules ressources de l'expérience et de la logique. Pour avancer clans cette voie, l'auteur commence par réfuter les objections les plus couramment opposées à cette entreprise (freudisme, (...) matérialisme, kantisme), avant de développer cieux types d'arguments tendant à prouver qu'il existe un Dieu : les premiers partent du constat que l'univers physique ne se suffit pas à lui-même, qu'il ne saurait donc exister sans avoir une cause transcendante ; les seconds, qui se fondent sur l'analyse des idées et des aspirations humaines, arrivent à la conclusion anti-voltairienne que "si Dieu n'existait pas, nous ne pourrions pas l'inventer". Ces deux types d'arguments, qui furent d'abord élaborés par les philosophes de l'Antiquité et les théologiens du Moyen Age, font ici l'objet d'une reformulation rigoureuse, nourrie par les travaux des philosophes anglo-saxons contemporains. L'ambition de cet ouvrage, au-delà des preuves qu'il soumet à la discussion, est d'accréditer à nouveau l'idée que l'existence de Dieu n'est pas seulement l'objet d'une foi incommunicable, mais la conclusion au moins probable de raisonnements accessibles à tous. Entre caprice égoïste ou réduction à la seule dimension sexuelle, quelle est donc la vérité profonde du désir? Tension vers ce qui manque, il est la marque d'un être incomplet, incapable de se donner à soi-même ce qui peut le combler. Cette orientation étrange vers un bien absent est comme le signe d'une impuissance et d'une dépendance foncière. Le désir semble ainsi à l'opposé de la sagesse. La sagesse suppose un sujet maître de soi ; le désir signale l'impuissance du (...) sujet. La sagesse suppose une connaissance claire ; le désir est un clair-obscur quant à sa source et quant à son terme. La sagesse exige la limite raisonnable ; le désir n'a pas de limite assignable, il demande toujours plus. Pourtant, explique le philosophe Frédéric Laupies, le désir est principe d'une authentique sagesse. En lui et par lui se dévoile la modalité essentielle de notre être fini, tendu vers ce qui le dépasse. En lui et par lui apparaît la subtile relation entre le présent et l'absent, entre le réel et l'imaginaire, entre le donné et le promis. Lui seul permet de comprendre le sens humain de la sexualité ; c'est aussi par lui que l'on peut comprendre les frustrations et les désillusions qui traversent notre existence. (shrink)

L'oeuvre de Pierre Bourdieu est aujourd'hui "utilisée", citée, discutée, critiquée, dans les domaines les plus divers du savoir contemporain : de la sociologie à la philosophie en passant par l'ethnologie, la linguistique, la science politique ou l'économie institutionnaliste. Passant en revue chronologiquement l'essentiel de son oeuvre, ces Lectures de Bourdieu en facilitent une approche génétique, tout en prenant la mesure de la diversité des terrains explorés. Elles permettent aussi de percevoir un style de pensée, un "habitus sociologique" marqué par la (...) réflexivité, tout en inventoriant la "boîte à outil" conceptuels élaborés par Bourdieu (habitus, capital, champ). Ecartant la recherche de l'originalité à tout prix et la fidélité religieuse à un auteur canonique, ces Lectures de Bourdieu invitent à un rapport réaliste à l'héritage théorique de Bourdieu. Il s'agit, d'une part, de proposer un accès à l'oeuvre, de favoriser l'acquisition de schèmes d'interprétation et d'un style de recherche et d'encourager ainsi la lecture des textes originaux. Il s'agit, d'autre part, en se démarquant des travers de l'application mécaniques, tout en renonçant aux profits faciles de la distinction à tout prix et du dépassement à tout crin, d'inviter à l'appropriation active d'un mode de pensée scientifique qui n'exclut en rien les rectifications. Augustine of Hippo has expressed a vision of beauty in nature that could, if better known, encourage traditional Christians and secular ecologists to affirm the ground they have in common. For Augustine the ideal would be to see nature as God sees it, feeling deeply both its beauty and its impermanence, loving nature without clinging to it. With such clear seeing would come love and the motivation for sustained and skillful action. This paper discusses Augustine's paradigm and what blocks us (...) from seeing it, and then frames principles for an authentically Augustinian response. (shrink)
