Never one to back away from controversy, Friedrich Nietzsche assails the Christian church in Twilight of the Idols. In this classic work, he sets out to substitute the morality of the Catholic and Protestant churches with that of Dionysian morality. I show that standard grounding conditions contradict standard conditions for the identities of propositions.

I propose an account of probability in the Everett interpretation of quantum mechanics. According to the account, probabilities are objective chances of centered propositions. As I show, the account solves a number of problems concerning the role of probability in the Everett interpretation. It also challenges an implicit assumption, concerning the aim and scope of fundamental physical theories, that is made throughout the philosophy of physics literature.

In seiner WL nova methodo charakterisiert Fichte die Aufgabe der Transzendentalphilosophie wie folgt: »die Bedingungen des Bewußtseins nach den schon bekannten Regeln zusammen zu setzen, und das Bewußtsein vor unseren Augen zu construieren«. Dieses Zitat bringt das Herzstück der frühen Fichteschen WL zum Vorschein und vermag auch das Grundanliegen der GWL präzise zu charakterisieren. Die WL strebt nach der genetischen Einsicht des wirklichen Bewußtseins und kann daher nicht vom Bewußtsein ausgehen; sie muß hinter das Bewußtsein zurückgehen, um es vor unseren (...) Augen konstruieren zu können. Fichtes Konzeption der produktiven Vernunft hat, wie im folgenden gezeigt werden soll, das Programm einer genetischen bzw. konstruktiven Deduktion des Bewußtseins erst möglich gemacht. Denn die von Fichte gedachten produktiven bzw. schlechthin setzenden Handlungen der Vernunft stellen ein systematisches Gefüge dar, aus dem eine vollständige Totalität von Produkten hervorgeht. Für die Genese des wirklichen Bewußtseins und Selbstbewußtseins erweist sich jener Wendepunkt als entscheidend, an dem die Produktion selbst den Charakter der Reflexion annimmt, nämlich der Reflexion auf ihre eigenen Produkte. Und weil die ursprüngliche Reflexion einer noch ursprünglicheren Produktion entspringt, hat sie selbst produktiven Charakter, ist sie re-produktiv; sie setzt gleichsam noch einmal, was bereits gesetzt ist. Die Reflexion bringt auf diese Weise neue Produkte mit sich, die das produzierend-reflektierende Ich zunächst ebenfalls nicht als seine eigenen Produkte erkennt, weshalb die Reflexion, wie gezeigt werden soll, eine ebenso ursprüngliche Projektion ist. Das systematische Wechselspiel von Reflexion und Projektion macht, ab einem gewissen Reflexionspunkte, Gegenstands- und Selbstbewußtsein für das Ich unterscheidbar und damit als solche erst möglich. Philosophers have developed several detailed accounts of what makes some mathematical proofs explanatory. Significantly less attention has been paid, however, to what makes some proofs more explanatory than other proofs. That is problematic, since the reasons for thinking that some proofs explain are also reasons for thinking that some proofs are more explanatory than others. So in this paper, I develop an account of comparative explanation in mathematics. I propose a theory of the `at least as explanatory as' relation among (...) mathematical proofs. (shrink)

A popular method for comparing the structures of mathematical objects, which I call the ‘subset approach’, says that X has more structure than Y just in case X’s automorphisms form a proper subset of Y’s automorphisms. This approach is attractive, in part, because it seems to yield the right results in some comparisons of spacetime structure. But as I show, it yields the wrong results in a number of other cases. The problem is that the subset approach compares structure using (...) automorphism sets. So a different approach is needed: structure should be compared using automorphism groups. (shrink)

This book offers a critical assessment of Axel Honneth’s complex and growing opus in social and political philosophy. It examines this in the context of the history and future of the Frankfurt School and in its relation to contemporary analytic approaches to social and political philosophy as well as postmodernist critics.

I explore how the nature, scope, and limits of the knowledge obtained in orbital dynamics has changed in recent years. Innovations in the design of spacecraft trajectories, as well as in astronomy, have led to new logics of theory-testing—that is, new research methodologies—in orbital dynamics. These methodologies—which combine resonance overlap theories, numerical experiments, and the implementation of space missions—were developed in response to the discovery of chaotic dynamical systems in our solar system. In the past few decades, they have replaced (...) the methodology that dominated orbital research in the centuries following Newton's Principia. As a result, the kind of knowledge achieved by orbital research has changed: we can know how orbiting bodies in chaotic systems behave, but only over sufficiently short time scales; and we can reliably measure those temporal limitations, using Lyapunov time. À partir d’un corpus d’enregistrements de répliques de la pièce de Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire, cet article traite de la phonologie des énoncés exclamatifs. Il établit que les spécificités phonologiques essentielles des exclamations sont de nature suprasegmentale et se trouvent être observées au niveau intonatif. Après avoir identifié certaines caractéristiques récurrentes des contours mélodiques observés dans les énoncés exclamatifs et montré que celles-ci sont conditionnées par la motivation sémantique et l’iconicité de l’intonation, nous nous intéressons aux liens indirects (...) qui existent entre l’intonation des exclamations et l’expression du degré. Nous fondant sur une réflexion sur la fonction démarcative de l’intonation et la valeur illocutoire des énoncés exclamatifs, nous suggérons également que l’étude de l’intonation des exclamations est susceptible d’éclairer la notion d’acte d’énonciation en contexte d’interaction orale.
