  1. A strategy for improving and integrating biomedical ontologies.Cornelius Rosse, Anand Kumar, Jose L. V. Mejino, Daniel L. Cook, Landon T. Detwiler & Barry Smith - 2005 - In Proceedings of the Annual Symposium of the American Medical Informatics Association. AMIA. pp. 639-643.
The integration of biomedical terminologies is indispensable to the process of information integration. When terminologies are linked merely through the alignment of their leaf terms, however, differences in context and ontological structure are ignored. Making use of the SNAP and SPAN ontologies, we show how three reference domain ontologies can be integrated at a higher level, through what we shall call the OBR framework (for: Ontology of Biomedical Reality). OBR is designed to facilitate inference across the boundaries of domain ontologies (...)

    Consequences of the Provability of NP ⊆ P/poly.Stephen Cook & Jan Krajíček - 2007 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 72 (4):1353 - 1371.
We prove the following results: (i) PV proves NP ⊆ P/poly iff PV proves coNP ⊆ NP/O(1). (ii) If PV proves NP ⊆ P/poly then PV proves that the Polynomial Hierarchy collapses to the Boolean Hierarchy. (iii) $S_{2}^{1}$ proves NP ⊆ P/poly iff $S_{2}^{1}$ proves coNP ⊆ NP/O(log n). (iv) If $S_{2}^{1}$ proves NP ⊆ P/poly then $S_{2}^{1}$ proves that the Polynomial Hierarchy collapses to PNP[log n]. (v) If $S_{2}^{2}$ proves NP ⊆ P/poly then $S_{2}^{2}$ proves that the Polynomial Hierarchy (...)

    A reappraisal of Leibniz's views on space, time, and motion.John W. Cook - 1979 - Philosophical Investigations 2 (2):22-63.
Leibniz has been widely praised for maintaining against the Newtonians of his day the view that space and time are relative. At the same time, he has been roundly criticized for allowing that we can distinguish absolute from merely relative motion. This distribution of applause and criticism, I will argue, is in a measure unjustified. For on the one hand, those arguments, found in his correspondence with Clarke, by which Leibniz seeks to reject the view that space and time are (...)

    Operational logics and the Hahn-Jordan property.Yewande Olubummo & Thurlow A. Cook - 1990 - Foundations of Physics 20 (7):905-913.
The main result established in this paper is the following: If the base normed spaceV of completely additive weights is a norm-determining subspace of the space of finitely additive weights V acting on the order unit space spanning the operational logic, thenV has the ε-Jordan-Hahn property iff V has the approximate Jordan-Hahn property. Several examples illustrating the theory are given.

    Frege's Recipe.Roy T. Cook & Philip A. Ebert - 2016 - Journal of Philosophy 113 (7):309-345.
In this paper, we present a formal recipe that Frege followed in his magnum opus “Grundgesetze der Arithmetik” when formulating his definitions. This recipe is not explicitly mentioned as such by Frege, but we will offer strong reasons to believe that Frege applied it in developing the formal material of Grundgesetze. We then show that a version of Basic Law V plays a fundamental role in Frege’s recipe and, in what follows, we will explicate what exactly this role is and (...)

The Triadic Roots of Human Cognition: “Mind” Is the Ability to go Beyond Dyadic Associations.Norman D. Cook - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:293649.
Empirical evidence is reviewed indicating that the extraordinary aspects of the human mind are due to our species’ ability to go beyond simple “dyadic associations” and to process the relations among three items of information simultaneously. Classic explanations of the “triadic” nature of human skills have been advocated by various scholars in the context of the evolution of human cognition. Here I summarize the core processes as found in (i) the syntax of language, (ii) tool-usage, and (iii) joint attention. I (...)

    On the usefulness of quantities.Kathleen C. Cook - 1975 - Synthese 31 (3-4):443 - 457.
I have argued that there is a philosophical problem posed by a need to determine the reference of expressions which seem to refer to kinds of stuff or matter and to make identity claims about it (e.g., ‘the gold’, ‘the same clay’). Ordinary sortal expressions such as ‘lump’, and ‘piece’ have been shown to be inadequate to the task of providing reference for the expressions in question. What is necessary is an expression which does not have an ordinary sortal use (...)

Human Rights and Maternal Health: Exploring the Effectiveness of the Alyne Decision.Rebecca J. Cook - 2013 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 41 (1):103-123.
This article explores the effectiveness of the decision of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women in the case of Alyne da Silva Pimentel Teixeira (deceased) v. Brazil, concerning a poor, Afro-Brazilian woman. This is the first decision of an international human rights treaty body to hold a state accountable for its failure to prevent an avoidable death in childbirth. Assessing the future effectiveness of this decision might be undertaken concretely by determining the degree of Brazil's actual compliance (...)

Human Rights and Maternal Health: Exploring the Effectiveness of the Alyne Decision.Rebecca J. Cook - 2013 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 41 (1):103-123.
Alyne da Silva Pimentel Teixeira died of postpartum hemorrhage following the stillbirth of a 27-week-old fetus on November 16, 2002 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her death led in 2011 to the first decision of an international treaty body holding a government accountable for a preventable maternal death. The decision, Alyne da Silva Pimentel Teixeira v. Brazil, was given by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, established to monitor compliance by member states with the UN Convention on (...)

    Frege's Cardinals and Neo-Logicism.Roy T. Cook - 2016 - Philosophia Mathematica 24 (1):60-90.
Gottlob Frege defined cardinal numbers in terms of value-ranges governed by the inconsistent Basic Law V. Neo-logicists have revived something like Frege's original project by introducing cardinal numbers as primitive objects, governed by Hume's Principle. A neo-logicist foundation for set theory, however, requires a consistent theory of value-ranges of some sort. Thus, it is natural to ask whether we can reconstruct the cardinal numbers by retaining Frege's definition and adopting an alternative consistent principle governing value-ranges. Given some natural assumptions regarding (...)

    In vino metaphora.Deborah Cook - 1988 - Filozofski Vestnik 9 (1).
»In vino metaphora« pomeni delno slavljenje Nietzschejevega preseganja nihi-lizma.

This article is a part of the discussion of Ilya Kasavin’s article “Creativity as a social phenomenon” and is devoted to the analysis of creativity in the era of digitalization. The author discusses creativity in computer programs and the actions of assistant robots. They can be creative because they are able to find new solutions to various problems. The Go program used new strategies that human players had never played before; another program predicted the crystal structure of various substances that (...)

    “Helped put in a quilt:”: Men's work and male intimacy in nineteenth-century new England.Karen V. Hansen - 1989 - Gender and Society 3 (3):334-354.
By examining the case of one man in the early nineteenth century, this article challenges the assumptions of separate work and emotional lives for men and women and raises questions for the study of gender. The experience of Brigham Nims, as revealed in his diaries and letters, demonstrates that men and women did not live their lives in completely separate spheres during this period. Men could ignore the prescriptive adages of advice manuals and ministers, and regularly break gender-role stereotypes, yet (...)
