Left Universalism, Africacentric Essays presents a defense of universalism as the foundation of moral and political arguments and commitments. Consisting of five intertwined essays, the book claims that centering such arguments and commitments on a particular place, in this instance the African world, is entirely compatible with that foundational universalism. Ato Sekyi-Otu thus proposes a less conventional mode of Africacentrism, one that rejects the usual hostility to universalism as an imperialist Eurocentric hoax. Sekyi-Otu argues that universalism is an (...) inescapable presupposition of ethical judgment in general and critique in particular, and that it is especially indispensable for radical criticism of conditions of existence in postcolonial society and for vindicating visions of social regeneration. Focusing primarily on the work of Samuel Beckett, Toni Morrison, Wole Soyinka, and J. M. Coetzee, Ato Quayson launches a thoroughly cross-cultural, interdisciplinary study of the representation of physical disability. Quayson suggests that the subliminal unease and moral panic invoked by the disabled is refracted within the structures of literature and literary discourse itself, a crisis he terms "aesthetic nervousness." The disabled reminds the able-bodied that the body is provisional and temporary and that normality is wrapped up in certain social (...) frameworks. Quayson expands his argument by turning to Greek and Yoruba writings, African American and postcolonial literature, depictions of deformed characters in early modern England and the plays of Shakespeare, and children's films, among other texts. He considers how disability affects interpersonal relationships and forces the character and the reader to take an ethical standpoint, much like representations of violence, pain, and the sacred. This book examines tragedy and tragic philosophy from the Greeks through Shakespeare to the present day. It explores key themes in the links between suffering and ethics through postcolonial literature. Ato Quayson reconceives how we think of World literature under the singular and fertile rubric of tragedy. He draws from many key works – Oedipus Rex, Philoctetes, Medea, Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear – to establish the main contours of tragedy. Quayson uses Shakespeare's Othello, Chinua Achebe, Wole Soyinka, Tayeb Salih, (...) Arundhati Roy, Toni Morrison, Samuel Beckett and J.M. Coetzee to qualify and expand the purview and terms by which Western tragedy has long been understood. Drawing on key texts such as The Poetics and The Nicomachean Ethics, and augmenting them with Frantz Fanon and the Akan concept of musuo (taboo), Quayson formulates a supple, insightful new theory of ethical choice and the impediments against it. With this study, we seek to contribute to the theological discussion regarding the nature and the meaning of the Christian eschaton. We will argue that the dynamics of God’s reign provide a hermeneutic key to Jesus’ ‘eschatological expectation’. It is not possible to grasp the full meaning of Jesus’ urgent expectation of the end unless one realises that God’s action is always eschatological. That is to say, right from creation, God is always acting in history in an eschatological way, though (...) only in Jesus does this action reach its ultimate goal. By critically examining the multifaceted views of selected contemporary theologians, we will suggest that Jesus’ eschatological expectation may be adequately interpreted only in light of God’s ‘eschatological reign’. In this context, the tension between the already present and not yet fully realised dimensions of God’s reign appears as a promising hermeneutic key to Jesus’ teaching in general and his eschatological expectation in particular. The article consists of two sections. Firstly, we will give a brief account of the dynamics of God’s reign, interpreted according to the ‘middle way’ between consistent and realised eschatology. In the second part, our focus will be on the eschatological expectation: its development in the Jewish tradition; on how Jesus applied, or rather re-appropriated, it in his mission; and whether or not his emphasis on the imminence of an eschaton was a result of him being mistaken. This study seeks to articulate the universality of the eschatological expectation, in its specifically Christian form, by interpreting it from the perspective of a radical embodiment. This can be understood in a twofold manner. Firstly, the mysterious reality of the eschatological reign of God is rooted in – and thus can be more adequately grasped through the lens of – Jesus’ own body seen as distinct yet not separate from his risen body and, mutatis mutandis, from his extended body, both (...) ecclesial and cosmic. Secondly, for the eschatological expectation to be lived out in an incarnational way, it must be ‘enfleshed’ in actions aimed at social and ecological liberation.The article consists of four sections. Firstly, we explain in what sense body – and more specifically Jesus’ body – is used in our analysis as a hermeneutic key to notions such as ‘risen body’, ‘spiritual body’, ‘extended body’, ‘social body’, ‘ecclesial body’, ‘cosmic body’, basar/kol basar, and ‘life’. Then, the universality of the eschatological expectation is being articulated on two levels, namely, with regard to the social, and in particular the ecclesial, body, and with regard to the cosmic body, with ecological implications inherent in such perspective. This paper examines the nexus between popular culture and the problem of corruption in Nigeria within the theoretical framework of the Socratic dictum that “the unexamined life is not worth living”. The paper argues that corruption is a social behavior that is propelled by popular culture and sustained by skewed application of logical thinking in critical decision making. Hence, the paper posits that formal education remains the bedrock upon which corruption can be curtailed and also equips people with logical tools (...) to examine their actions as individuals and its consequences on the larger society. O presente artigo objetiva analisar os impactos da pandemia no ensino de filosofia. Mais precisamente, se ainda é possível filosofar em uma realidade de quase “terra arrasada” que atingiu a educação brasileira, durante os meses que sucederam ao noticiário da Covid-19. Para tanto, considera-se, no primeiro momento, a realidade educacional enfrentada pelos profissionais da educação no que tange ao distanciamento exigido pelas autoridades sanitárias em virtude da pandemia. Em seguida, no segundo momento, aborda-se a necessidade do ensino de filosofia, caracterizando-a (...) enquanto possibilidade crítico-reflexiva. Apesar do distanciamento social, bem como da utilização impessoal e, por vezes, abstrata das ferramentas digitais, a práxis filosófica não pode ser descartada. Por fim, intenta-se responder à provocação inicial que dá título ao presente texto, refletindo sobre as possibilidades do ato de filosofar em realidade educacional tão hostil e, em muitos aspectos, difícil de administrar, como o contexto pós-pandemia. The ovarian tumor (otu) gene behaves as if it encodes a product (OGP) which is required during several early steps in the transformation of oogonia into functional oocytes. The ovarian phenotypes produced by various EMS‐induced mutations can be explained as graded responses by individual mutant germ cells to the different levels of functionally active OGP they themselves synthesize. In addition, genetic evidence suggests that otu also encodes a second product that is utilized late in oogenesis. Molecular studies of the otugene (...) demonstrate that it does transcribe at least two ovaryspecific RNAs. The possible function of the otu product in the cellular divisions that give rise to the oocyte and its sister nurse cells is discussed. (shrink)

Resumo: Ao considerar as ações que são propriamente humanas, as quais pertencem ao homem enquanto homem, Tomás de Aquino destaca aquelas ações que procedem da vontade deliberada e que visam a um determinado fim, uma orientação que será caracterizada como algo inscrito no próprio ser da criatura e acompanhada de certo conhecimento. Este artigo almeja estudar a constituição do ato moral para Tomás, fazendo ressaltar não apenas a centralidade da vontade na constituição desse ato, mas também certos assuntos pertinentes à (...) reflexão tomasiana do ato moral, como a distinção voluntário/involuntário, a coexistência de inteligência e vontade na determinação do ato humano e a qualificação da ação que é imperada pela vontade, pois é nela que se manifestará de modo mais claro o agir ético para Tomás, demarcado este pelo signo da prudência. A referência textual de Tomás, aqui utilizada, diz respeito à segunda parte da Suma de teologia.: In considering actions that are properly human, which belong to man as man, Thomas Aquinas highlights those actions that proceed from deliberate will and aim at a certain end. This orientation is characterized as something inscribed in the very being of the creature and accompanied by knowledge of a certain kind. This article aims to study the constitution of the moral act for Aquinas. It emphasizes not only the centrality of the will in the constitution of this act, but also certain issues pertinent to Aquinas’ reflection on the moral act. For example, the voluntary/involuntary distinction, the coexistence of intelligence and will in the determination of the human act, and the qualification of action dominated by the will. It is in action that the ethical act for Aquinas is most clearly manifested, marked by the sign of prudence. The primary text referred to in this article is the second part of the Summa theologiae. Neste artigo apresentamos de forma breve uma teoria searliana de interpretação dos atos de fala. Mostramos através do exemplo das metáforas que, conforme proposta por Searle, a interpretação de atos de fala consistiria em reconhecer a intenção do falante. Esse processo se daria por meio do uso de regras convencionais da linguagem tanto pelo falante quanto pelo ouvinte. Contudo, as metáforas são um exemplo de que essa proposta de interpretação não é suficiente para descrever o processo pelo qual os agentes (...) interpretam atos de fala. Argumentamos que se deve acrescentar a esse processo a noção de regras estratégicas. Seguindo Peirce, duas regras estratégicas são oferecidas: o princípio da coerência e o princípio da economia. Parece também satisfatório acrescentar o princípio da não-contradição. Embora estudos empíricos não sejam definitivos sobre o tema da interpretação, em especial sobre metáforas, os resultados apontam para a aplicação de regras estratégicas na interpretação. Finalmente, é sugerido que se Searle está certo ao dizer que interpretação é o reconhecimento da intenção do falante, então a interpretação depende do uso de regras convencionais e do uso de regras estratégicas. Esta discussão ocorrerá debruçada sobre os meios de um capitalismo e pautada a partir das ambivalências de uma ideia de fetiche. ABSTRACT The clinical encounter, as an inter-human relationship between the patient and their doctor, constitutes the arena where a clash between the worldviews of these agents can occur. Traditionally, the clinical encounter has been studied from an externalist perspective, extrinsic to the event itself, focusing on quantifiable outcomes. In his early texts, Bakhtin develops a philosophy of the act that remarkably suits the complexity of the clinical encounter. By combining elements of epistemology, gnoseology, axiology, and ontology in his architecture of (...) a world constructed intersubjectively, Bakhtin provides us with an almost perfect model for studying the clinical encounter. Therefore, in this article, we argue that understanding the clinical encounter as a responsible Bakhtinian act brings new and interesting perspectives to the understanding of this peculiar event from within, while also paving the way for a more ethical and humane type of medicine. A presente tese de doutorado trata da reflexão de David Bohm acerca do Ato de Pensar X Pensamento e seus impactos que incidiriam na liberdade para a criatividade ou, ao contrário, esbarrariam em arbitrariedade e fragmentação, em especial, no conhecimento científico. Para tanto, combinamos algumas de suas obras escritas no período de maturidade. Na tessitura de nosso texto, seguindo a linha de Bohm, recorremos ao uso de metáforas e analogias, no intuito de explorar não apenas o “despertar de sua criatividade”, (...) por meio dos contextos aos quais encontrava-se envolto, mas também seu repertório, suas lentes para compreender o mundo implicado e explicado. No mais, analisamos como seus vínculos afetivos teriam contribuído em sua forma particular de fazer-se a si próprio: como físico e livre pensador. Apesar de ter sido um estudioso nascido no século passado, torna-se perceptível como outros pesquisadores, inclusive da atualidade, parecem comungar do mesmo ato de pensar, o que de maneira ainda que implicada continua a estender sua influência. A experiência aqui abordada será a vivencia na Extensão Universitária no Curso de Educação Quilombola, do ODEERE-Órgão de Educação e Relações Étnicas, da Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia-UESB, o qual está vinculado à área de conhecimento das Ciências Sociais e Humanidades, sendo constituído em três fazes dosais: formação teórica, a pesquisa e a imersão na realidade de campo, de forma interventiva, sendo que universo deste relato de experiencias se dá a partir da visita de campo no Recôncavo Baiano, Zona (...) Metropolitana de Salvador e em Salvador, esse roteiro objetiva apresentar aos alunos da extensão os locais onde foi processada parte da história do Brasil e como nessas localidades ainda prosperam a cultura e os dilemas vivenciados pelas Populações Afro-Brasileiras. Nesse caso, o trabalho traz, também, a visita realizada ao Quilombo Pitanga dos Palmares devido seus elementos viabilizarem os assuntos da disciplina em questão. Enquanto Assistente Social, o que me motivou a ser cursista do curso de extensão do ODEERE foi a necessidade de buscar respostas para a atuação profissional, em específico, a identificação geográfica, em um determinado município no Sudoeste Baiano, dos Povos e Comunidades Tradicionais visando garantir os seus Direitos Sociais. No debate acerca da singularidade de, pelos menos, alguns de nossos pensamentos sobre o mundo, assume-se corriqueiramente que o responsável pela natureza singular do episódio mental não é o próprio episódio e, sim, a proposição singular expressa quer por um proferimento assertórico de sentença singular autônoma, quer pela cláusula complementar em um relato de atribuição de atitude proposicional. As rotas semânticas padrão assumem que a singularidade do episódio mental (conceitual) é por assim dizer “herdada” da singularidade do conteúdo. Argumento que (...) este pressuposto apresenta uma lacuna, pois desconsidera o papel desempenhado em certos atos de pensamento, chamados de episódicos, por habilidades cognitivas tais como a capacidade de perceber objetos particulares, de vivenciar (novamente) ou de projetar-se mentalmente em direção a acontecimentos particulares pessoais, diretamente responsáveis por sua singularidade. No entanto, contra a tese de que haveria capacidades episódicas aí envolvidas, argumento que a singularidade dos atos de pensar episódicos se dá pelo exercício pontual no espaço e no tempo dessas capacidades e há, portanto, um sentido não derivado em que eles podem ser qualificados como singulares. Die in den späten 1960er bis frühen 1980er Jahren oft inflationär gebrauchten Kategorien „Entfremdung“ und „Verdinglichung“ sind seit den frühen 2000er Jahren im deutschsprachigen Raum erneut in die sozialphilosophische Diskussion geraten. Im vorliegenden Aufsatz sollen an drei Beispielen diese Reaktualisierungen kritisch mit Bezug auf die Theorie von Karl Marx dargestellt und beurteilt werden. Obwohl diesen Reaktualisierungen nur eine unbefriedigende Kapitalismuskritik zugrunde liegt, werden durch sie Entfremdungs- und Verdinglichungsphänomene des Alltags und des intersubjektiven Nahraums der Gegenwart sichtbar, die in der Marxschen (...) Theorie mit ihrem primären Fokus auf gesellschaftliche Strukturen ausgeklammert blieben. (shrink)

Por meio de abordagem exploratória e raciocínio dedutivo pautado em revisão bibliográfica, procura-se apontar a importância da prova econômica na análise de atos de concentração pelo CADE, considerando o aumento dessas operações em mercados de competição dinâmica, marcados por elevado nível de inovação. Referida prova assume relevância argumentativa e se propõe a estipular o efeito líquido negativo da operação. Considera-se que a prova econômica embasaria o argumento econômico de aplicação normativa, inserindo-se na análise econômica do direito. Ao trabalhá-la em mercados (...) de inovação deve-se estar ciente das limitações legais existentes, bem como dos desafios do ambiente digital. (shrink)

Nesse trabalho será analisado o tratamento teórico apresentado por Hannah Arendt sobre o tema da desobediência civil em sua obra Crises da República, traçando um paralelo com as práticas do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem-Terra no que tange à legitimidade dos seus atos de desobediência civil. Sob esse enfoque a luta pelo acesso a terra se apresenta como uma possibilidade de que seus integrantes integrem-se em comunidade fundando um espaço público e desenvolvendo sua capacidade de ação política, característica essencial da (...) vida humana. The main goal of this paper is to discuss whether the so called supererogatory acts exist and, if they do, how can they be part of an ethical theory. A supererogatory act is considered as an action that is not obligatory, i.e. it may or may not be performed by an agent without that entailing a moral error. Heroic and holy deeds, traditionally, have been taken as examples of acts of this kind. My proposal is to defend the existence of (...) these acts, although that does not imply that they are central within an ethical theory. The practice of a supererogatory act does not change the ethical status of those who performs it, since the act is not characterized as a duty. Supererogatory acts would be peripheral with respect to an ethical theory. (shrink)

RESUMO A partir da perspetiva de uma análise crítica do discurso, este artigo analisa a questão da autenticidade nos atos discursivos de expiação política. O objetivo é estudar de que forma a autenticidade dos atos discursivos de expiação política pode ser avaliada através de estratégias de reelaboração do passado empregadas em discursos de penitência. O artigo enfrenta a seguinte pergunta de pesquisa: de que forma estratégias de reelaboração do passado influenciam na autenticidade de um ato discursivo de expiação política? O (...) artigo analisa uma declaração de 2015 proferida por Shinzo Abe, antigo primeiro-ministro do Japão, e argumenta que, no seu ato discursivo de expiação política de 2015, ele desenvolveu uma estratégia de cancelamento da memória histórica nipónica. Tal estratégia impediu que a declaração de 2015 de Shinzo Abe fosse considerada um genuíno ato discursivo de expiação política. (shrink)

This article examines three texts in the Acts of the Apostles called “summaries”. These texts illuminate one another, keeping each other internal and external connections, as well as relations with the Gospel according to Luke and the corpus paulinum. The analysis of the literary context of the summaries favors a more accurate view of its content, and a more comprehensive understanding of its message which moreover has repercussions on the patristic tradition not only as apologetic value, but as building the (...) monastic community and paradigm to understand the Church. The summaries are established as the fundamental reports, to which the Magisterium often uses in order to a variety of purposes. (shrink)

Este artigo pretende retomar a interpretação que pode ser chamada de tradicional das três condições do ato propriamente virtuoso expostas em EN II 4, i.e., o conhecimento, escolher deliberadamente o ato por ele mesmo e seguir-se de uma disposição firme e não hesitante. A atenção da análise será voltada à primeira e à terceira condição. Buscar-se-á mostrar que a condição do conhecimento pode ser compreendida como conhecimento das circunstâncias, do ato ele mesmo como virtuoso e das técnicas ou ofícios que (...) podem ser por ele requeridos. Buscar-se-á igualmente justificar a introdução do termo ‘disposição’ na tradução apresentada, já que o termo grego ‘hexis’ não consta na passagem analisada. Um apontamento será feito, por fim, no sentido de oferecer uma justificativa mais ampla para a interpretação aqui defendida na medida em que a localiza como um posicionamento contrário à concepção intelectualista socrática. Apresentam-se, em forma de sintética perspectiva histórica, alguns dos temas principais da metafisica do ser, de modo a mostrar a articulação do pensamento filosófico desde Parmênides a Tomás de Aquino, salientando-se no fim de cada período as conquistas que ficaram em aberto. A seguir, expõe-se a metafisica Juliana, afirmando-se que esta seguramente consistiria numa tentativa de continuar a especulação e o aprofundamento sobre o ato de Ser, a partir do ponto alcançado pela especulação anterior. O trabalho pode ser visto portanto (...) como uma chave para a leitura das obras lulianas. (shrink)
