In the midst of the current crisis that is threatening to derail the historical project of European unification, Jürgen Habermas has been one of the most perceptive critics of the ineffectual and evasive responses to the global financial crisis, especially by the German political class. This extended essay on the constitution for Europe represents Habermas’s constructive engagement with the European project at a time when the crisis of the eurozone is threatening the very existence of the (...) European Union. There is a growing realization that the European treaty needs to be revised in order to deal with the structural defects of monetary union, but a clear perspective for the future is missing. Drawing on his analysis of European unification as a process in which international treaties have progressively taken on features of a democratic constitution, Habermas explains why the current proposals to transform the system of European governance into one of executive federalism is a mistake. His central argument is that the European project must realize its democratic potential by evolving from an international into a cosmopolitan community. The opening essay on the role played by the concept of human dignity in the genealogy of human rights in the modern era throws further important light on the philosophical foundations of Habermas’s theory of how democratic political institutions can be extended beyond the level of nation-states. Zu den wohl unbestritten durch Fichte eingebrachten Fortschritten in das philosophische Denken der Neuzeit gehört die in der ICH-Konzeption geleistete Vereinigung von theoretischer und praktischer Philosophie. Bekanntlich hatte Kant mit der Formulierung des kategorischen Imperativs die Forderung aufgestellt, dass das Unbedingte, das Sittengesetz, sein soll, weil die Vernunft es erfordere. Deren praktische Selbstverwirklichung ist das Ziel, insofern sich die Vernunft nicht anders als durch sich selbst zu realisieren vermag. Das Unbedingte ist folglich nicht ein Seiendes, sondern ein Aufgegebenes, Gegenstand eines (...) hervorbringenden Handelns. Das hat erhebliche Auswirkungen auf das Gesundheitswesen, die Psychotherapie und nicht zuletzt auch die Psychoanalyse. Neben der grundsätzlichen Frage nach dem gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit Gesundheits- bzw. Krankheitsdaten, dem Persönlichkeitsrecht der Bürger sowie dem Datenschutz bei der Nutzung digitaler Medien stellen sich auch grundlegende ethische Fragen in der Psychotherapie und in der Psychoanalyse. Unabdingbar für (...) die implizite Ethik der Psychoanalyse bzw. der psychoanalytisch begründeten Verfahren ist der geschützte therapeutische Raum, dessen Vorhandensein (nach innen und außen) überhaupt erst ermöglicht, vor- und unbewusstes Material zu untersuchen. Auch wenn die digitale therapeutische Kommunikation geeignet ist, bei Analytiker und Analysand das Phantasma der Omnipräsenz zu befördern, greift die radikale Ablehnung ihres Einsatzes zu kurz. The book of world-known German philosopher Jurgen Habermas is devoted to the Marxist social theory and in general to potential of the evolutionary concept of society. A wide range of topics is comprised: from the role of philosophy in Marxism and rational and ethical foundations of social identity to comparative theories and problem of legitimacy. J.Habermas does not only critically rethink Marxist concept, but builds a coherent theoretical alternative to it. The power of the book is that the key problems (...) of social theory are considered not only in the abstract plane, but in the context of contemporary, keen, topical socio-political challenges. Namely the nature of current social crises, conflicts of legitimation of the contemporary state, the morality of power, the effect of innovations etc. The book has become not only one of the classical samples of Marxism analysis, but it was recognized significant contribution to contemporary social theory. In this introduction the author outlines his approach to philosophy of law taken in Between Facts and Norms. In particular, he briefly discusses topics such as the form and function of law, the relation between law and morality, the relation between human rights and sovereignty, and the notion of democracy.

In _The New Order and Last Orientation,_ Eric Voegelin explores two distinctly different yet equally important aspects of modernity. He begins by offering a vivid account of the political situation in seventeenth-century Europe after the decline of the church and the passing of the empire. Voegelin shows how the intellectual and political disorder of the period was met by such seemingly disparate responses as Grotius's theory of natural right, Hobbes's _Leviathan,_ the role of the Fronde in the formation of the (...) French national state, Spinoza's _Tractatus Theologico-Politicus,_ and Locke's _Second Treatise,_ the blueprint of a modern middle-class society. By putting these responses and the thought of Montesquieu, Hume, and others in the context of the birth pains of the national state and the emergence of a new self-understanding of man, Voegelin achieves a brilliant mixture of political history and profound philosophical analysis. Voegelin's verdict of modernity is pronounced most powerfully in the opening part of "Last Orientation," in the chapter entitled "Phenomenalism." His discussion of the intellectual confusion underlying the modern project of scientistic phenomenalism is the most original criticism leveled against modernity to date. It is at the same time the first step toward a recovery of reality through philosophy conceived as a science of substance in the spirit of Giordano Bruno. Voegelin's first example of such an effort at recovering reality is the chapter on Schelling, one of the spiritual realists who has not been affected by the prevailing rationalist or reductionist creeds that are part of the modern disorder. Schelling's indirect yet powerful influence on Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Freud more than justifies Voegelin's interest in his philosophy and character, even though Voegelin would later distance himself from some of Schelling's positions. The volume's concluding chapter, "Nietzsche and Pascal," applies the understanding gained from the study of Schelling to the thought of the most powerful critic of the age, Nietzsche. Nietzsche's self-avowed affinity with Pascal provides the key to an analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of his thought and reaffirms the connection that links the beginning of modernity with its most recent crises and the efforts to overcome them. This paper reports on a micro-ethnography of social interaction in an urban plaza in Colombia, focusing on the plaza’s role as an arena for the acquisition of interaction skills. We investigate how children of different ages initiate and sustain interactions with same-age and older peers and the efforts they make to be recognized and ‘visible’. We interpret our data in light of three theories of socialization: Corsaro’s conception of childhood as “interpretive reproduction”, Vygotsky’s model of the “zone of proximal development”, (...) and the “structural approach” to social cognition and development. While a social form like the plaza, which is collectively enacted by members of all age groups of the local community, provides children with an extraordinarily rich array of opportunities to develop social communication skills by interacting with older and younger peers, our analysis also demonstrates that children, as they are building zones of proximal development for themselves, play a central role in assembling, integrating, and sustaining the neighborhood as a face-to-face society. In this fashion, the paper illustrates how the micro-analysis of social interaction can contribute to the analysis of social ‘macro’ forms. (shrink)

Therefore some strategies obtain considerable importance which strengthen the observation and the communicative process on matters of poverty and social exclusion. official poverty reports belong to these instruments. Even international programmes to combat poverty might gain considerable communicative relevance. United Nations World Summit on Social Development at Copenhague 1995 should not be underestimated in its potential importance.
