This is the first complete, one-volume English translation of the ancient Chinese text Xunzi, one of the most extensive, sophisticated, and elegant works in the tradition of Confucian thought. Through essays, poetry, dialogues, and anecdotes, the Xunzi articulates a Confucian perspective on ethics, politics, warfare, language, psychology, human nature, ritual, and music, among other topics. Aimed at general readers and students of Chinese thought, Eric Hutton’s translation makes the full text of this important work more accessible in English than ever (...) before. Named for its purported author, the Xunzi has long been neglected compared to works such as the Analects of Confucius and the Mencius. Yet interest in the Xunzi has grown in recent decades, and the text presents a much more systematic vision of the Confucian ideal than the fragmented sayings of Confucius and Mencius. In one famous, explicit contrast to them, the Xunzi argues that human nature is bad. However, it also allows that people can become good through rituals and institutions established by earlier sages. Indeed, the main purpose of the Xunzi is to urge people to become as good as possible, both for their own sakes and for the sake of peace and order in the world. In this edition, key terms are consistently translated to aid understanding and line numbers are provided for easy reference. We investigate how the selection of assurance topics and the format of their communication influence the credibility perception of sustainability report readers. This is important because misleading communication may discredit ethical sustainability assurance practices. Based on signaling theory and using an experimental approach, we are the first to examine false credibility signals in the context of sustainability assurance. We find that two variables related to sustainability assurance, reference explicitness and assurance depth, jointly influence the assurance signal and the perceived credibility (...) of a sustainability report. Our findings indicate that readers are not at risk of false signaling but can make incorrect interpretations of the assurance signal and might respond negatively to well-intentioned signals. The main implications of our findings are that firms should refrain from increasing reference explicitness and should select only the most material topics. Taken together, our results provide new insights on the unethical practice of false signaling and provide an example of an incorrect signal interpretation by readers. (shrink)

Johann Christoph Gottsched (1700-1766) is considered to be one of the greatest scholars of the Early German Enlightenment. As a professor for poetics in Leipzig, he worked towards a reformation of the German language and a renaissance in German drama. His extensive correspondence and social contacts made him a ‚European event‘ and his papers are being presented here in a standard edition: 25 volumes, approx. 6,000 letters to and from Gottsched, predominantly in German, are being published with a (...) critical apparatus and an academic commentary. This edition is being published in co-operation with the Saxonian Academy of Sciences and edited by members of the academy. The edition is scheduled to be published over 25 years and offers an ideal addition to the multi-volume edition of Gottsched's works, already published by de Gruyter. (shrink)

Der vorliegende dritte Band der Briefedition dokumentiert den Briefwechsel der Jahre 1734 und 1735. Mit seiner Ernennung zum Professor fur Logik und Metaphysik und seiner Heirat mit Luise Adelgunde Victorie Kulmus ist Gottsched Mitte der 1730er Jahre in Leipzig fest etabliert. Die Briefe bieten wichtige Einblicke in die Entwicklung der von ihm geleiteten Deutschen Gesellschaft, in die Aufnahme und Wirkung seiner Werke, u.a. der Theaterstucke, und in seine Ubersetzertatigkeit. Of the 218 letters, 126 belong to correspondence with the Imperial Count Ernst Christoph von Manteuffel, a dedicated patron of the supporters of Christian Wolff and the head of the Berlin chapter of the Society of Alethophiles. In Berlin and Leipzig great hopes were placed in the Prussian heir apparent Friedrich II, whom many saw a kind of Platonian “philosopher king” who would help elevate reason and Wolffian philosophy to new heights. The letters document the development of a rationalistic strain (...) in Gottsched's sermons. They also provide insight into the satires of Wolff's opponents written by L.A.V. Gottsched. Gottsched's speeches concerning Martin Opitz and the “book printing anniversary” found strong resonance in the correspondence and inspired letters concerning similar undertakings. Jakob Brucker's letters illuminate the planning and creation of the “Bilder-sal”, a contemporary history of notable scholars that featured biographies and portraits, and which came to include Gottsched and his wife. The busy beaver problem of Rado [6] is reexamined for the case of Turing machines given by quadruples rather than quintuples. Moreover several printing symbols are allowed. Some values of the corresponding beaver function are given and it is shown that this function for a fixed number of states and varying number of symbols is nonrecursive for three or more states and recursive for two states. As a byproduct we get that the minimal number of states in a universal Turing (...) machine (quadruples) is three. (shrink)

This book covers the author's conception of God aside from any religion. He does not come from a religious view in order to transmit the truest conception of God that he is capable of because any religion, whatever it might be, always claims God for itself in an exclusionary fashion. In other words, you must be a follower of the chosen faith before God will accept you into his kingdom. Wells rejects this view. Any man or woman who accepts God's (...) love as one person connecting to their own creator, is fine. An intermediary, despite what they might crow from whatever pulpits they use, is not necessary. We are all God's children. We are all seeking the same God, so to be dogmatic within a certain exclusionary faith is small-minded and petty. James was acclaimed in England and Europe as well as in America. Peirce, on the other hand, was almost entirely neglected; his work remained unknown (...) to all but a few philosophers and his chief acknowledgment was as a scientist and logician. His importance began to be recognized and his immense researches and writings studied some twenty-five years after his death. It was otherwise with Dewey. During his long lifetime his ideas not only engaged the reflections and critical discussions of philosophers, he also had a profound and contagious influence on education, the social sciences, aesthetics, and political theory and practice. In this respect his thought has reached a wider audience in America than that of either Peirce or James. Längere Zeit bleiben die Verbindungen in die Heimat Ostpreußen, vor allem zu früheren Kommilitonen, eng und intensiv. Die Deutsche Gesellschaft in Leipzig, der Gottsched seit 1727 als Senior vorsteht, gewinnt zunehmend auswärtige Mitglieder. Deren Briefe bestimmen in einem wachsenden Maße den Inhalt der Korrespondenz. Wichtig ist schließlich der Beginn der Korrespondenz mit seiner späteren Frau, Luise Adelgunde Victorie Kulmus in Danzig. Auf Gottscheds Tätigkeit als Theaterreformer (...) verweisen die Anfänge des Briefverkehrs mit dem Ehepaar Neuber. (shrink)
