This new translation of The Logic of the Cultural Sciences _ _makes Ernst Cassirer’s classic study, long out of print, available to English readers. A German Jew living in exile at the beginning of the Second World War, Cassirer wrote this book—one of his clearest and most concise—in response to the crises besetting his era. It represented to him a rethinking and completion of his magnum opus _The Philosophy of Symbolic Forms. _S. G. The essey The concept of Reality is a part of the first systematic work of Ernst Cassirer, the alumnus of the Marburg school, titled Substanzbegriff und Funktionsbegriff. Untersuchungen über Grundfragen der Erkenntniskritik . It developed certain position concerning the problem of reality, which is representative for this school. This conception, and especially the shift of cognitive perspective, from substantial to functional, contained in it, is crucial as far as the whole later Cassirer’s work is concerned and it comes as (...) the foundation for the subsequent theory of symbolic forms. Ernst Troeltsch war für März 1923 eingeladen, als einer der ersten deutschen Gelehrten nach dem Weltkrieg in London, Oxford und Edinburgh Vorträge zu seinem Lebenswerk zu halten, starb jedoch kurz zuvor. Die postum veröffentlichten Texte der insgesamt fünf Einzelvorträge vermitteln Troeltschs Idee einer europäischen Kultursynthese im Anschluss an seine Studien zu Der Historismus und seine Probleme. Im Rahmen der Kritischen Gesamtausgabe wird in diesem Band erstmals das deutsche Original der Vorträge gemeinsam mit der englischen Übersetzung präsentiert. Das Erscheinen der (...) englischen Buchfassung noch in Troeltschs Todesjahr motivierte zur deutschen Ausgabe, in der die Texte in anderer Anordnung wiedergegeben sind. Die Geschichte der deutschen und englischen Doppelveröffentlichung liefert zugleich einen Einblick in den schwierigen deutsch-britischen Kulturtransfer in der Zeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg. The word “romanticism” designates in German as in other European languages a broad movement in literature that originated at the beginning of the nineteenth century and has often been characterized as an opposition to the preceding age of rationalism and Enlightenment. Situated between the classicist schools of taste of the previous century and the realistic and naturalistic trends in literature of the later nineteenth century, Romanticism or romantic literature is the product of the creative power of the imagination; it appeals (...) to the emotions, has a preference for the mysterious aspects of nature, and shows a strong predilection for the past, the Middle Ages, and mythological traditions. With its strong affinity to the novel, romantic literature departs from the classical forms and the classicist canon of literature, but when these classical forms were nevertheless used by the authors of this movement, something new was created – the romantic tale, the romantic drama, and romantic poetry. The great romantic authors in Germany were E. T. A. Hoffmann, Eichendorff, Brentano, Arnim, and Fouqué. There is both a narrower and a broader notion of Romanticism in Germany, the broader also relating to painting (Friedrich, Runge) and music (Schumann, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Bartholdy, Wagner). Romanticism had a great impact on the general view of the world and was influential in the rise of the historical consciousness, the revival of a religious spirit, and the emergence of a conservative political attitude. As far as philosophy and the sciences are concerned, Romanticism is associated with figures such as Schelling and Schopenhauer, the development of a philosophy of art, of nature, and of the subconscious. On the whole, Romanticism is one of those movements that shaped an entire age and manifested itself down to the most particular features of popular belief and scientific interest. (shrink)

Wackenroder and the musical conception of early Romanticism.- The early romantic movement brings in a new general conception of art and the artist. Within this context, music is treated as a proper and independent form of art. This paper shows how a reflection on music is to be found expressed in the texts of Wackenroder, which is later to be carried on by other thinkers.
