The Discovery of the Parabolic Shape of the Projectile Trajectory.Emil Wohlwill - 2001 - Science in Context 14 (s1):375-410.
in the fourth volume of his history of the experimental method in italy, raffaello caverni fulfilled the promise he had made four years earlier in an introductory overview of his work : to prove on the basis of the history of the discovery of the parabolic shape of the projectile trajectory that galileo claimed the intellectual property of his eminent contemporaries as his own, and to show how this was accomplished. one had the right to expect that the proponent of (...)

Emil Wohlwill, Galileo and His Battle for the Copernican System.Hans-Werner Schütt - 2001 - Science in Context 14 (s1):371-373.
galileo galilei is one of the few figures in the history of science who has attracted the imagination even of laymen to the natural sciences. the battle of this great physicist against the domination of his church, a battle which he ultimately lost, manifests fundamental human interest that extends beyond the individual. galileo pits the right of the thinking individual against the right of an institution that defends its claim to set norms for individual thinking because it posseses superhuman truths.

    A Forgotten Controversy Introductory Note to the Appendix.Jürgen Renn - 2001 - Science in Context 14 (s1):321-325.
more than a century ago three eminent galileo scholars, raffaello caverni, antonio favaro, and emil wohlwill, discussed the emergence of galileo's science of motion and the documentary evidence pertaining to it. among the works of these scholars, only favaro's edizione nazionale of galileo's works is still widely used, while the contents of their other writings only play a minor if any role in the current english-speaking literature. the disappearance from historical memory of many of the substantial contributions by (...)

Does Controlled Donation after Circulatory Death Violate the Dead Donor Rule?Emil J. Nielsen Busch & Marius T. Mjaaland - 2022 - American Journal of Bioethics 23 (2):4-11.
The vital status of patients who are a part of controlled donation after circulatory death (cDCD) is widely debated in bioethical literature. Opponents to currently applied cDCD protocols argue that they violate the dead donor rule, while proponents of the protocols advocate compatibility. In this article, we argue that both parties often misinterpret the moral implications of the dead donor rule. The rule as such does not require an assessment of a donor’s vital status, we contend, but rather an assessment (...)

Restoring the Organism as a Whole: Does NRP Resurrect the Dead?Emil J. N. Busch - 2024 - American Journal of Bioethics 24 (6):27-33.
The introduction of normothermic regional perfusion (NRP) in controlled donation after circulatory determination of death (cDCDD) protocols is by some regarded as controversial and ethically troublesome. One of the main concerns that opponents have about introducing NRP in cDCDD protocols is that reestablishing circulation will negate the determination of death by circulatory criteria, potentially resuscitating the donor. In this article, I argue that this is not the case. If we take a closer look at the concept of death underlying the (...)

What is Death and Why Do We Insist on the Dead Donor Rule? A Response to Our Critics.Emil J. Busch & Marius T. Mjaaland - 2023 - American Journal of Bioethics 24 (4):8-12.
What is death: a process or a specific declaration? Is it a biological continuum of events or a decision based on medical, ethical, and legal criteria? In our view, it is both, and there are philos...

  41. The concept of truth and the semantics of the truth predicate.Kirk Ludwig & Emil Badici - 2007 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 50 (6):622-638.
We sketch an account according to which the semantic concepts themselves are not pathological and the pathologies that attend the semantic predicates arise because of the intention to impose on them a role they cannot fulfill, that of expressing semantic concepts for a language that includes them. We provide a simplified model of the account and argue in its light that (i) a consequence is that our meaning intentions are unsuccessful, and such semantic predicates fail to express any concept, and (...)

The first attempt at a systematic approach to axiomatic theories of truth was undertaken by Friedman and Sheard (Ann Pure Appl Log 33:1–21, 1987). There twelve principles consisting of axioms, axiom schemata and rules of inference, each embodying a reasonable property of truth were isolated for study. Working with a base theory of truth conservative over PA, Friedman and Sheard raised the following questions. Which subsets of the Optional Axioms are consistent over the base theory? What are the proof-theoretic strengths (...)

Fragment of nonstandard analysis with a finitary consistency proof.Michal Rössler & Emil Jeřábek - 2007 - Bulletin of Symbolic Logic 13 (1):54-70.
We introduce a nonstandard arithmetic $NQA^-$ based on the theory developed by R. Chuaqui and P. Suppes in [2] (we will denote it by $NQA^+$ ), with a weakened external open minimization schema. A finitary consistency proof for $NQA^-$ formalizable in PRA is presented. We also show interesting facts about the strength of the theories $NQA^-$ and $NQA^+$ ; $NQA^-$ is mutually interpretable with $I\Delta_0 + EXP$ , and on the other hand, $NQA^+$ interprets the theories IΣ1 and $WKL_0$.
