Die überragende Bedeutung Martin Luthers für die Geschichte und Kultur der europäischen Neuzeit sowie des Protestantismus ist unbestritten. An der Frage, wie diese Bedeutung genauer zu beschreiben sei, scheiden sich jedoch die Geister. Dieser Umstand spiegelt sich in den höchst unterschiedlichen Bezugnahmen auf die Theologie des Reformators in der Theologie seit der Aufklärung. Während die einen die lutherische Reformation in einen engen Zusammenhang mit Autonomie und Neuzeit rücken, betonen andere die Differenz zwischen Luther und der modernen Welt. An dieser Ambivalenz (...) in der Beurteilung Luthers wird bereits deutlich, dass die Bedeutung des Wittenberger Reformators die Kategorie der Wirkungsgeschichte in gewisser Weise sprengt. Geschichte und Kultur des Protestantismus lassen sich zu einem guten Teil als Geschichte der Rezeption von Luthers Denken auffassen. Diese Einsicht bildet den Leitgedanken des vorliegenden Bandes. Die darin versammelten zehn Studien untersuchen die höchst differenzierte und komplexe Wirkung und Rezeption Martin Luthers von der Aufklärung bis zum 20. Jahrhundert. (shrink)

The volume contains ten historical theological studies tracing the significance of Luther for Protestant religious culture (mainly in the German-speaking world) since the Reformation. The approach taken is one of the history of reception: selected positions in modern Protestantism are identified as different forms of reception of Luther's theology. In the background is the view that at present a productive systematic theological approach to Luther's theology primarily requires a detailed consideration of a new Protestant religious culture.

English summary: Rochus Leonhardt discusses the relationship between Protestantism and scepticism in a critical analysis of the philosophical approach used by Odo Marquard. He shows that the most important goal of Marquard's philosophy was to establish a pluralism in hermeneutics. Les disciplines historiques, littéraires et philosophiques font un emploi abondant des catégories historiographiques. Parmi celles-ci, les termes en ismes sont très fréquents pour référer à une doctrine, un courant artistique, une idéologie ou des événements spécifiques. On fait cependant remarquer que ces désignations posent de nombreux problèmes d’interprétation. En particulier, que l’origine exacte d’une catégorie est souvent méconnue et que sa signification est plus équivoque qu’on ne le croit habituellement. La formation d’un terme en isme s’explique souvent dans un contexte (...) polémique et sert à condamner ou critiquer plutôt qu’à comprendre une pensée, un mouvement ou des faits historiques. Les catégories d’athéisme, de classicisme ou de féminisme en sont de bons exemples. Le présent volume vise à contribuer à l’étude critique des catégories historiographiques et des notions en isme en s’attardant à l’époque moderne (XVI e XVIII e siècles). Il s’agit d’un moment clef de l’histoire européenne pendant laquelle nombre de ces notions apparaissent ou pour laquelle l’historiographie en a fait un emploi abondant. Les chapitres en examinent la valeur théorique par rapport à une origine ou des usages, et déterminent de quelles manières elles contribuent à l’interprétation de l’histoire, de la littérature ou de la philosophie, de la Renaissance jusqu’à la Révolution française. The revitalization of Indigenous ways of knowing and being with land is central to addressing the devastating impacts of climate change. This article contributes to growing research in Indigenous Climate Change Studies by focusing on connections between ecology, sexuality, and gender. To track the histories of gendered violence for Two Spirit peoples is to also follow the marked wounds of land dispossession, excavation, and exploitation. Conversely, Two Spirit futures are deeply imbricated in not only surviving but also flourishing among post-apocalyptic (...) conditions. Through socio-linguistic analyses of western animacy hierarchies and a historical analysis of colonial fables which casted the racialized-gendered other as monstrous, this article critiques popularized end-of-the-world discourses on climate change narratives. Alternatively, the article concludes by offering a reading of Indigiqueer speculative science fiction, gleaning methods of not only survival and resistance but also resilience amongst post-apocalyptic conditions. Ultimately, this paper argues that the revitalization of Indigenous genders is in-part linked to the present revitalization and protection of ecological life-worlds, centering Two Spirit knowledge at what settlers may fear to be “the end of the world.”. What kind of animals are human beings? And how do our visions of the human shape our theories of social action and institutions? In Moral, Believing Animals>, Christian Smith advances a creative theory of human persons and culture that offers innovative, challenging answers to these and other fundamental questions in sociological, cultural, and religious theory. Smith suggests that human beings have a peculiar set of capacities and proclivities that distinguishes them significantly from other animals on this planet. Despite the (...) vast differences in humanity between cultures and across history, no matter how differently people narrate their lives and histories, there remains an underlying structure of human personhood that helps to order human culture, history, and narration. Drawing on important recent insights in moral philosophy, epistemology, and narrative studies, Smith argues that humans are animals who have an inescapable moral and spiritual dimension. Increasing farmers’ acceptance and adoption of environmentally beneficial farming practices is essential for mitigating negative impacts of agriculture. To support adoption through policy, it is necessary to understand which types of farms or farmers do or do not apply such practices. However, farmers are not a homogeneous group and their behavior is subject to a complex array of structural, socioeconomic, and socio-psychological influences. Reducing this complexity, farmer typologies or archetypes are useful tools for understanding differing motivations for the uptake of (...) sustainable farming practices. Previous investigations of the role of farmer archetypes in the adoption of such practices rely on either purely qualitative or purely quantitative methods in data collection, typology creation, and hypothesis testing. Our study combines both approaches by classifying survey respondents into farmer types based on a previous Q methodological study. We then use these types in a two-part regression model that aims to explain participation in agri-environmental schemes and the level of scheme participation. To control for farm structural factors, we additionally link our questionnaire data to secondary data from the farm accountancy data network. Results indicate that in Austria, AES are attractive to all types of farmers, but the level of participation in these schemes differs between archetypes: Profitability-oriented farmers participate less, and nature-oriented farmers participate more than other types. This suggests that monetary compensations for sustainable farming practices are not perceived as sufficient by certain groups of farmers, and policy makers need to consider additional kinds of incentives. This book provides an overview of Martin Luther's (1483-1546) state thinking whose reformation of faith and church provoked important and controversial consequences concerning the understanding of the political order and power. Luther's main work in this field "Von weltlicher Obrigkeit" is imprinted completely in a modern translation. The analysis of his state thinking in the contemporary context of the 16th century is followed by a systematic interpretation as well as a historical sketch. In the different areas "Luther and Machiavelli", "Resistance" (...) and "Natural law" the contributors develop connections and comparisons to other concepts. ZusammenfassungDie Frage nach dem Glück des Menschen ist nicht eben ein Hauptgegenstand evangelischer Ethik; diese hat vielmehr überwiegend die Glücksthematik ausgeblendet. Gegenläufig zu diesem immer noch maßgeblichen common sense sucht der Artikel nach der Möglichkeit einer Rehabilitierung der Glücksfrage auf dem Boden der reformatorischen Theologie, namentlich in Anknüpfung an Luthers Rechtfertigungslehre. Er zeigt, dass die von Luther vollzogene konsequente Ablösung der weltlichen Ethik vom Bedürfnis des Menschen nach Heilsgewissheit durchaus als Grundlage einer Ethik gelingenden irdisch-menschlichen Lebens fungieren kann: Weil sich (...) der Mensch durch keine Art der irdischen Lebensführung das Heil verdienen kann, fällt das säkulare Ethos in die Kompetenz humaner Vernunft und deren Interesse am Menschendienlichen – eine Konstellation, die an Aristoteles' Ethik erinnert. Die mit dieser Überlegung anvisierte evangelische Glücksethik ermöglicht einerseits eine konstruktiv-kritische Auseinandersetzung mit säkularen Glücksvorstellungen lebensweltlicher, populärwissenschaftlicher oder wissenschaftlicher Art. Andererseits zielt sie darauf, die Rechtfertigungslehre als Theorie gelingenden Lebens zu interpretieren und damit die Aktualität des Kernstücks lutherischer Theologie an einem gegenwärtig relevanten Thema zu erweisen.SummaryHuman happiness is not really the main topic of Protestant ethics. It was and is rather typical for Protestant ethics to block out this topic. Contrary to this still valid common sense the article wants to rehabilitate the question of happiness based on the insights of reformatory theology, namely with reference to Luther's doctrine of justification. It shows that Luther's complete separation of secular ethics from the human need for certainty of salvation can actually function as a basis for an ethics of happy human life: Because people cannot earn salvation by their own moral merits, the secular ethics has to be ruled by human reason and its interest to enable a life worth living – a situation which reminds of the Aristotelian approach to ethics. A Protestant ethics of happiness, seen through these eyes, makes it possible to examine and to criticise secular ideas of happiness, be it popular, popular scientific or scientific. On the other hand it aims to interpret the doctrine of justification as a theory of happy human life. So the importance of this core of Lutheran theology can be proved by using a topic which today is highly relevant. (shrink)

The scores of studies on virtue do not yet constitute a mature science of virtue because of unresolved theoretical and methods challenges. In this article, we addressed those challenges by clarifying how virtue research relates to prosocial behavior, positive psychology, and personality psychology and does not run afoul of the fact–value distinction. Suppose you perform two actions. The first imposes a risk of harm that, on its own, would be excessive; but the second reduces the risk of harm by a corresponding amount. By pairing the two actions together to form a set of actions that is risk-neutral, can you thereby make your overall course of conduct permissible? This question is theoretically interesting, because the answer is apparently: sometimes Yes, sometimes No. It is also practically important, because it bears on the moral (...) status of practices such as offsetting personal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this article we propose a criterion for distinguishing between cases where pairing risk-increasing and risk-reducing actions makes each action permissible, and those where it does not: the Principle of Aggregate Risk-Imposition. We work towards this by considering a range of examples that illustrate various illegitimate ways of pairing risk-increasing actions with risk-reducing ones, and asking what goes wrong in each case. We then use this criterion to evaluate GHG offsetting. Is offsetting a legitimate way of removing the risk-imposition associated with GHG emissions, or not? Controversially, we argue that this turns out to depend on the form that the offsetting takes. (shrink)

Some moral theorists argue that innocent beneficiaries of wrongdoing may have special remedial duties to address the hardships suffered by the victims of the wrongdoing. These arguments generally aim to simply motivate the idea that being a beneficiary can provide an independent ground for charging agents with remedial duties to the victims of wrongdoing. Consequently, they have neglected contexts in which it is implausible to charge beneficiaries with remedial duties to the victims of wrongdoing, thereby failing to explore the limits (...) of the benefiting relation in detail. Our aim in this article is to identify a criterion to distinguish contexts in which innocent beneficiaries plausibly bear remedial duties to the victims of wrongdoing from those in which they do not. We argue that innocent beneficiaries incur special duties to the victims of wrongdoing if and only if receiving and retaining the benefits sustains wrongful harm. We develop this criterion by identifying and explicating two general modes of sustaining wrongful harm. We also show that our criterion offers a general explanation for why some innocent beneficiaries incur a special duty to the victims of wrongdoing while others do not. By sustaining wrongful harm, beneficiaries-with-duties contribute to wrongful harm, and we ordinarily have relatively stringent moral requirements against contributing to wrongful harm. On our account, innocently benefiting from wrongdoing _per se_ does not generate duties to the victims of wrongdoing. Rather, beneficiaries acquire such duties because their receipt and retention of the benefits of wrongdoing contribute to the persistence of the wrongful harm suffered by the victim. We conclude by showing that our proposed criterion also illuminates why there can be reasonable disagreement about whether beneficiaries have a duty to victims in some social contexts. (shrink)
