Un ruolo fondamentale viene occupato dallo spazio del _limen_. Il limen costituisce un portale verso la liberazione, ma non ne garantisce l’esito. Il progetto politico di emancipazione dalle oppressioni multiple richiede la creazione di coalizioni. O objetivo deste artigo é associar a lógica de abdução de Peirce à cibernética de sistemas vivos. Sistemas vivos não podem ser entendidos através de uma epistemologia causalista, pois se comportam conforme os efeitos e não conforme as causas. A cibernética analisou o modo pelo qual máquinas não triviais se movem através de retroação, ou circuito de retorno: a cada etapa, o sistema corrige a etapa anterior, dependendo de até onde a etapa anterior pode ir em relação a um possível (...) equilíbrio. A dinâmica implica uma possível inibição da energia excessiva seguida de um possível aumento da energia insuficiente. Cada uma dessas condições é um erro que se corrige automaticamente, atingindo um estado temporário de homeostase. A auto-correção significa que é preciso adicionar à saída um impulso adicional “criativo” que seja singular e imprevisível. A lógica que é capaz de fazer sentido dessa dinâmica é a abdução de Peirce, também chamada retrodução, onde o ato inferencial retroage sobre um fato incompreensível, um “erro” epistemológico, inventando sua causa. O pensar e a auto-poiesis de sistemas vivos percorrem o mesmo caminho, substituindo estratégias ocasionais por causas universais atemporais. A abdução é a evidência de que é possível atingir uma condição de “conhecimento” sem apelar para causalidade. A possibilidade que as “leis da natureza”, possa seguir este caminho conclui o ensaio ao adicionar a noção do físico Lee Smolin do “princípio de precedência”, conforme foi inspirado pela ideia de Peirce da evolução das leis da natureza e seu caráter temporal, ou seja, contingente. The emphasis placed on the nexus between individual and political freedom and on the distinction between “moralism” and “morality” leads the way to the exploration of the relationship between theory and politics. In the light of the contemporary crisis of the American left, the role of the theorist is that of introducing elements of discontinuity (...) in the common-sense discourse which, on the other hand, tends to be crystallized by politics. According to Brown this gap must be taken into consideration by Women Studies, since this field of study sometimes risks relying on static and institutionalized identities which can be an obstruction to its exercise of a «homeopathic function» inside democratic regimes. The theme of Aesthetics in Present Future concerns the new chances the arts have and the deep changes they are undergoing, due to the new media, and the digital world in which we are growingly immersed. That this world is to be understood from an aesthetic point of view, become clear if we think of how much of what we produce, and observe and study is offered through images in particular and perceptual means in general.

Thinking through Error: The Moving Target of Knowledge argues that there is a positive view of error. Making errors does not only mean that we’ve done something wrong, but also that we —more or less unaware— are given a chance to find something new and true. Trying to avoid errors is a social request, but it is uncertainty that has a liberating function on the philosophical level, as well as on the individual, psychological level.

La democracia no se funda sobre la primacía del poder sobre el derecho, ni viceversa, además, permite la proximidad más cercana de las necesidades morales a aquellas políticas. La democracia es la luz mientras que la autocracia (...) es la oscuridad: esta, la democracia, juega su rol en el inseparable trinomio libertad-paz-derechos humanos. La constante tensión, a través del conflicto, hacia la racionalidad y la libertad parece moverse en la dirección de una sociedad universalmente entendida que coordine las necesidades y garantice la paz entre todos los Estados. The purpose of this paper is not to provide an overall picture of care ethics, but, rather, to reflect upon the concept of care, which has gained significance in particular scientific contexts. Undoubtedly, the importance of the subject of care represents a challenge on the level of fundamental philosophical positions and a diversified look into the occurring forms of the psychological and social suffering, dependency, and vulnerability. I will shed light on tenets that are considered central to the care ethics (...) and that have led to the setting up of the relationship between care and democracy. By introducing the basic aspects of Carol Gilligan’s and Joan Tronto’s theories, I will emphasize their vocation to be politically relevant. A discussion on the relationship between care and justice on the one hand, and needs and rights on the other, will follow. Can hearing voices of care make democracy more just? How can care ethics provide a concrete support for democracy? On the political level, care ethics builds on the assumptions of the necessary relatedness and equality between individuals who are decisive in the light of the welfare state perspective. Upon closer examination, one may see that the setting up of these relationships is not new to the liberal perspective. Liberalism is historically rooted in the fundamental interconnection between freedom and equality. Virtues such as care and meekness can be formulated in the language of politics, but they still remain unpolitical. On the one hand, engaging in a critical reflection upon such virtues might be an indispensable measuring instrument for distinguishing a good democracy from a bad one. On the other hand, care ethics does not prove to be a real alternative to the ethics of justice. In this regard, care ethics seems to show its feet of clay. (shrink)

In this paper we present a method to reduce the decision problem of several infinite-valued propositional logics to their finite-valued counterparts. We apply our method to Łukasiewicz, Gödel and Product logics and to some of their combinations. As a byproduct we define sequent calculi for all these infinite-valued logics and we give an alternative proof that their tautology problems are in co-NP.

In this article we use our previous constructions (L. Brünjes, C. Serpé, Theory Appl. Categ. 14:357–398, 2005) to lay down some foundations for the application of A. Robinson’s nonstandard methods to modern algebraic geometry. The main motivation is the search for another tool to transfer results from characteristic zero to positive characteristic and vice versa. We axiomatize the notion of state over finitely generated free NM-algebras, the Lindenbaum algebras of pure Nilpotent Minimum logic. We show that states over the free n -generated NM-algebra exactly correspond to integrals of elements of with respect to Borel probability measures.

Gödel algebras form the locally finite variety of Heyting algebras satisfying the prelinearity axiom =. In 1969, Horn proved that a Heyting algebra is a Gödel algebra if and only if its set of prime filters partially ordered by reverse inclusion–i.e. its prime spectrum–is a forest. Our main result characterizes Gödel algebras that are free over some finite distributive lattice by an intrisic property of their spectral forest.

Intra-hemispheric interference has been often observed when body parts with neighboring representations within the same hemisphere are stimulated. However, patterns of interference in early and late somatosensory processing stages due to the stimulation of different body parts have not been explored. Here, we explore functional similarities and differences between attention modulation of the somatosensory N140 and P300 elicited at the fingers vs. cheeks. In an active oddball paradigm, 22 participants received vibrotactile intensity deviant stimulation either ipsilateral or contralateral at the (...) fingers or cheeks. The ipsilateral deviant always covered a larger area of skin than the contralateral deviant. Overall, both N140 and P300 amplitudes were higher following stimulation at the cheek and N140 topographies differed between fingers and cheek stimulation. For the N140, results showed higher deviant ERP amplitudes following contralateral than ipsilateral stimulation, regardless of the stimulated body part. N140 peak latency differed between stimulated body parts with shorter latencies for the stimulation at the fingers. Regarding P300 amplitudes, contralateral deviant stimulation at the fingers replicated the N140 pattern, showing higher responses and shorter latencies than ipsilateral stimulation at the fingers. For the stimulation at the cheeks, ipsilateral deviants elicited higher P300 amplitudes and longer latencies than contralateral ones. These findings indicate that at the fingers ipsilateral deviant stimulation leads to intra-hemispheric interference, with significantly smaller ERP amplitudes than in contralateral stimulation, both at early and late processing stages. By contrast, at the cheeks, intra-hemispheric interference is selective for early processing stages. Therefore, the mechanisms of intra-hemispheric processing differ from inter-hemispheric ones and the pattern of intra-hemispheric interference in early and late processing stages is body-part specific. It is commonly assumed that personalization technologies used by Google for the purpose of tailoring search results for individual users create filter bubbles, which reinforce users’ political views. Surprisingly, empirical evidence for a personalization-induced filter bubble has not been forthcoming. Here, we investigate whether filter bubbles may result instead from a searcher’s choice of search queries. In the first experiment, participants rated the left-right leaning of 48 queries (search strings), 6 for each of 8 topics (abortion, benefits, climate change, sex (...) equality, immigration, nuclear family, Islam, and taxation). An independent sample of participants were then asked to select one of these queries for each of the 8 topics. With the exception of the topic of Islam, participants were significantly more likely to select a query corresponding to their own political leaning, compared to other queries, explaining between 12% and 39% of the variance. A second experiment investigated the effect of the political leaning of the same queries on the overall political leaning of Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) in Google Search. The top six results of each SERP were rated collectively by a third group of participants, explaining 36.3% of the variance across all 48 search terms (p < .00001). That is, (1) participants in our experiments tended to select own-side search queries, and (2) using those queries tended to yield own-side search results when using the Google search engine. Our results are consistent with the notion of a self-imposed filter bubble in which query selection plays a salient role. (shrink)

This paper examines how competition and competitive strategy influence companies’ propensity to engage in socially and environmentally responsible procurement processes (SERP). We interview 141 British procurement managers, on their perception of their company’s competitive strategy and the competitive environment in which they operating in. In addition, participants were asked how important responsible procurement was for their overall business and their strategy.Our results suggest that companies that produce a differentiated product engage in relatively proactive SERP process, compared to their counterparties, who (...) aimed to produce a product at the lowest price possible. Quantum computing is of high interest because it promises to perform at least some kinds of computations much faster than classical computers. Arute et al. 2019 (informally, “the Google Quantum Team”) report the results of experiments that purport to demonstrate “quantum supremacy” – the claim that the performance of some quantum computers is better than that of classical computers on some problems. Do these results close the debate over quantum supremacy? We argue that they do not.
