  1. Youth Volunteers in Post-Disaster Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Nepal.Bibek Adhikari & Darryl Macer - 2018 - Eubios Journal of Asian and International Bioethics 28 (6):193-202.
Youth constitute one third of total population in Nepal. This paper looks at the work and motivation of youth volunteers in disaster management in Nepal in order to evaluate how these ideas and values among the youth played roles in the re-construction of the Nation from the 2015 Earthquake. The study used primary data through group interviews with volunteers of Youth’s UNESCO Club in Kathmandu city who were actively involved in disaster-relief programs at Sindhupalchowk, Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Ramechhap districts, together (...)

Participants’ Right to Withdraw from Research: Researchers’ Lived Experiences on Ethics of Withdrawal.Bibek Dahal - 2024 - Journal of Academic Ethics 22 (1):191-209.
Ethics in research can be broadly divided into two epistemic dimensions. One dimension focuses on bureaucratic procedures (i.e., procedural ethics), while the other focuses on contextually and culturally contested practice of ethics in research (i.e., ethics in practice). Researchers experience both dimensions distinctly in their qualitative research. The review of ethics in prospective research through bureaucratic procedures aims to measure compliance with documented requirements relating to research participants, data management, consent, and ensure researchers can demonstrate their ethical competence before they (...)

Shaking Up (and Keeping Intact) the Old Boys’ Network: The Impact of the Mandatory Gender Quota on the Board of Directors in India.Bibek Bhattacharya, Ipsu Khadka & Dalhia Mani - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 177 (4):763-778.
Prior research on the impact of mandatory quotas in one dimension of diversity, on other dimensions, shows contradictory results. We seek to resolve this puzzle by relying on theory in social psychology on homophily and recategorization processes in hiring. In the context of a law mandating a gender quota on Indian boards, we predict and find that boards respond to the law by hiring new women directors who are similar to existing directors in terms of caste and community dimensions. We (...)

  4. Framing Integrity Resolution: An Integrative Approach to Academic Ethics.Bibek Dahal - forthcoming - Journal of Academic Ethics:1-18.
The purpose of this paper is to explore an integrative approach to academic ethics research. Academic ethics is known as professional commitment towards ethical decision-making in education, research, and innovation. It has been practised in multiple forms, including academic integrity and research ethics within a larger educational and research landscape. Despite having several intertwining and overlapping features and principles of practice, higher education institutions all over the world have considered academic integrity and research ethics as two distinct subjects of practice. (...)

From sharecropping to crop-rent: women farmers changing agricultural production relations in rural South Asia.Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt & Mohanraj Adhikari - 2016 - Agriculture and Human Values 33 (4):997-1010.
This paper explores changing production relations in agriculture in context of increasingly widespread and longer-duration male outmigration, as against previous, short-duration and seasonal migration. It investigates how de facto women-heads of households (WHHs) are changing a resilient crop-sharing system in absence of adequate access to productive assets, formal training or experience in farming, and while contributing labour to farming and coping with gendered demands on their time. Based on qualitative inquiry in one of the poorest parts of South Asia, the (...)

Community engagement and ethical global health research.Bipin Adhikari, Christopher Pell & Phaik Yeong Cheah - 2020 - Global Bioethics 31 (1):1-12.
Community engagement is increasingly recognized as a critical element of medical research, recommended by ethicists, required by research funders and advocated in ethics guidelines. The benefits of community engagement are often stressed in instrumental terms, particularly with regard to promoting recruitment and retention in studies. Less emphasis has been placed on the value of community engagement with regard to ethical good practice, with goals often implied rather than clearly articulated. This article outlines explicitly how community engagement can contribute to ethical (...)

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights of Women: A Rights-based Approach.Shaorin Tanira, Raihana Amin, Sanchita Adhikary, Khadiza Sultana & Rashida Khatun - 2019 - Bangladesh Journal of Bioethics 10 (2):1-6.
Violations of women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights are frequent all over the world. Women’s sexual and reproductive health is related to multiple human rights. The term ‘rights-based’ has become increasingly linked to the concept of a more comprehensive approach to sexual and reproductive rights of women around the globe. The rights-based perspective is derived from the treaties, pacts and other international commitments that recognize and reinforce human rights, including the sexual and reproductive rights of women. We conducted an (...)

    Mining Calendar-based Periodic Patterns from Nonbinary Transactions.Jhimli Adhikari - 2014 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 23 (3):277-291.
A large class of problems deals with temporal data. Identifying temporal patterns in these datasets is a natural as well as an important task. In recent times, researchers have reported an algorithm for finding calendar-based periodic pattern in time-stamped data without considering the purchased quantities of the items. However, most of the real-life databases are nonbinary, and therefore, exploring various calendar-based patterns with their purchased quantities may discover information useful to improve the quality of business decisions. In this article, a (...)

Synthesizing Global Exceptional Patterns in Different Data Sources.Animesh Adhikari - 2012 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 21 (3):293-323.
. Many large companies transact from multiple branches. It results in generating multiple databases, since local transactions are stored locally. The number of multi-branch companies as well as the number of branches of a multi-branch company is increasing over time. Thus, it is important to study data mining on multiple databases. Global exceptional patterns describe interesting individuality of few branches. Therefore, it is interesting to identify such patterns. In this paper, we propose type I and type II global exceptional frequent (...)

UN Human Rights Shaming and Foreign Aid Allocation.Bimal Adhikari - 2021 - Human Rights Review 22 (2):133-154.
Does public condemnation or shaming of human rights abuses by the United Nations influence foreign aid delivery calculus across Western donor states? I argue that countries shamed in the United Nations Human Rights Council encourage donor states to channel more aid via international and local non-governmental organizations. Furthermore, I find this effect to be more pronounced with increased media coverage. The findings of this paper suggest that international organizations do influence advanced democracies’ foreign policy. Moreover, the paper also finds that (...)

The aim of this paper is to bring out the effect of economic reforms introduced in India on the direction of virtual water trade (through trade of agricultural products). The study also identifies the dual role that virtual water has in an economy. It is a source of export earnings (benefit side), but at the same time there is a loss of virtual water (cost side) through agricultural trade. The study is novel in the sense that it not only identifies (...)

Complexity changes in functional state dynamics suggest focal connectivity reductions.David Sutherland Blair, Carles Soriano-Mas, Joana Cabral, Pedro Moreira, Pedro Morgado & Gustavo Deco - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16:958706.
The past two decades have seen an explosion in the methods and directions of neuroscience research. Along with many others, complexity research has rapidly gained traction as both an independent research field and a valuable subdiscipline in computational neuroscience. In the past decade alone, several studies have suggested that psychiatric disorders affect the spatiotemporal complexity of both global and region-specific brain activity (Liu et al., 2013; Adhikari et al., 2017; Li et al., 2018). However, many of these studies have (...)
