The focus of this paper is employee ownership, specifically the role of employee ownership in value creation. Based on a sample of 163 French companies, we have measured the impact of employee share ownership on value creation for both shareholders and stakeholders. Only companies with a sustained employee ownership policy over a 5-year period (from 2001 to 2005), as defined by the French Federation of Employee and Former Employee Shareholders (FAS), have been considered. The results indicate that employee share ownership (...) plans have no effect on shareholders’ or stakeholders’ value creation. (shrink)

Beide Traditionen formulierten eine radikale Kritik des theoretischen Gebrauchs der Sprache. Sie waren aber gezwungen, ihre Theoriesprachen zu verwenden, ohne auf eine Übereinstimmung mit ihren Gesprächspartnern warten zu können. Der Widerstreit, der daraus (...) entstand, konnte nur eine Lösung finden: die Anerkennung, dass die Logik der Rede und der Schrift die Logik der Wahrheit ist. Anzuerkennen war die Freiheit der philosophischen Urteilskraft des Menschen im Gebrauch der Sprache. Nur so kann man sich von den Pseudo-Gewissheiten des pragmatischen bzw. des konsensuellen Sollen befreien und die ethisch-politischen Sprachwahrheiten anerkennen. Die Neue Moderne hat sich freilich selbst verneint, weil jede Tradition unfähig war, die Falschheit ihrer eigenen pragmatischen Prämissen zu durchschauen. Der Widerstreit der Kulturen kann nur durch die Anerkennung der philosophischen Wahrheitslogik überwunden werden. This is a sequel to Augustine Shutte's previous book Philosophy for Africa. In that book he engages with some concepts central to traditional African thinking about human nature and society. In this book he offers a new interpretation of the chief ethical idea in African thought, Ubuntu. He argues that it complements the central European ethical notion of individual freedom, and shows how the two ideas can be combined to form an ethic based on a richer understanding of our humanity. The violation of Bell inequalities seems to establish an important fact about the world: that it is non-local. However, this result relies on the assumption of the statistical independence of the measurement settings with respect to potential past events that might have determined them. Superdeterminism refers to the view that a local, and determinist, account of Bell inequalities violations is possible, by rejecting this assumption of statistical independence. We examine and clarify various problems with superdeterminism, looking in particular at its (...) consequences on the nature of scientific laws and scientific reasoning. We argue that the view requires a neo-Humean account of at least some laws, and creates a significant problem for the use of statistical independence in other parts of physics and science more generally. C'est là que s'origine la fameuse révolution copernicienne que la modernité a opérée dans les sciences. Le langage doit en effet sa puissance d'orientation à la conscience d'écoute qui lui est inhérente, car celle-ci engendre perceptions, pensées, actions et désirs au filtre du jugement. La fonction de régulation que l'écoute de vérité a dans la vie humaine lui est ici restituée, ainsi que sa puissance critique. Ces éléments d'anthropobiologie du langage rendent ainsi à chacun l'accès à sa faculté philosophique de juger. (shrink)

This paper presents a critique of American liberal capitalism, a system that began as a mere experiment but has now become the only form of life that isbroadly recognized as legitimate. Such legitimation is sustained by the seemingly objective and transcendent authority of a consensus that, as a matter of fact, isincapable of self-critique and judgment. For in liberal capitalism, the quest for happiness is measured primarily by the successes of free enterprise and the freemarket in general. These successes have (...) thus become the only legitimate sources of individual and collective action. But in spite of such successes, liberal capitalism does nothing about the actual unjust relations between different social classes and between different countries. In order to address this unjust situation, liberal capitalism rightly searches for a theory of justice that can provide genuine selfjustification or self-legitimation. But capitalist culture has wrongly found such self-justification in the liberal theory of Rawls, whose veil of ignorance ends up legitimating capitalism’s own “worst of all possible situations.”. Richard Rorty est certainement l'un des philosophes contemporains qui ont contribué le plus directement à la discussion internationale en philosophie.
