At a time when cooperation between Europe and the Arab World is getting more and more concrete, this article highlights the reciprocal influences between languages and legal culture both North and South of the Mediterranean for the redaction of a common discourse. Europe conceives and produces numerous pieces of legislation that have a significant impact on both Maghreb and Mashriq. It is thus necessary to look back at a few seminal studies on European legal discourse to focus on the various (...) types of corpus used, as well as how they are perceived abroad. This state of play underlines the linguistic and cultural interactions that will be faced by language studies in Europe in the fields of terminology, semantics and pragmatics. (shrink)

Un siglo después, los progresos realizados parecen ser escasos. ¿A qué puede deberse esta situación? Diríase que la propia historia de la paleografía puede explicar las dificultades a que se ha enfrentado. Para el futuro, una gran parte del programa esbozado en 1898 sigue estando de actualidad. Conviene, asimismo, iniciar una (...) reflexión sobre los métodos analíticos aplicables a la escritura árabe. For many centuries Jews in Arabic-speaking lands have transcribed books written by non-Jews into the Hebrew alphabet; the language remains Arabic, but the writing is Hebrew. This was done mainly for the benefit of those who knew the Arabic language but not the script. The majority of these transcriptions are scientific or philosophical texts. Transcriptions are of value to scholars for two reasons. Some entire texts, or more complete or accurate versions of texts, are preserved only in transcription. In addition, (...) the choice of texts transcribed is very instructive concerning the cultural and intellectual interests of Jews. A century ago the great bibliographer Moritz Steinschneider published a description of the transcriptions known to him. We have undertaken to prepare a full catalogue. In this article we offer a preliminary relisting of those manuscripts that we have examined recently. Pendant plusieurs siècles, des juifs des pays arabophones transcrivaient en caractères hébraïques des ouvrages rédigés par des savants non juifs: la langue restait l'arabe, mais l'écriture était hébraïque. Ces transcriptions étaient faites à l'intention des juifs qui connaissaient la langue arabe mais pas son écriture. La plupart des textes ainsi transcrits sont scientifiques ou philosophiques. Ils présentent un intérêt pour la recherche pour deux raisons. Il y a des textes qui ne sont préservés qu'en transcription, et d'autres dont les manuscrits en caractères hébraïques renferment des versions plus complètes ou plus exactes que les manuscrits connus en caractères arabes. De plus, le choix des textes ayant été transcrits en caractères hébraïques est très instructif quant aux intérêts culturels et intellectuels des juifs. Il y a un siècle, le grand bibliographe Moritz Steinschneider avait publié une liste descriptive des manuscrits renfermant des transcriptions qui lui étaient connus. Nous-même avons entrepris d'en rédiger un catalogue complet. Dans le présent article nous proposons une liste préliminaire des manuscrits que nous avons examinés récemment. (shrink)

C'est un long cheminement qui a conduit la langue arabe de ses débuts à une expression philosophique. À partir du premier monument littéraire qui nous soit parvenu, le Coran, l'évolution a progressivement ajouté, à une langue et à une production très marquées par l'oralité, les caractères propres à l'écriture. À travers l'étude de la langue du Coran et du ḥadīṯ, à travers les disciplines religieuses comme le kalāmou le fiqh, à travers certaines formes littéraires, se sont longtemps manifestés (...) les caractères de l'oralité. Tandis qu'avec les sciences et plus particulièrement la philosophie, les traits caractéristiques de l'écrit vont se trouver affirmés. C'est ce que cherchera à établir la seconde partie de ce travail en analysant ce que nous apporte l'œuvre de Farabi (870-950) dans sa réflexion sur le langage. Héritier des générations qui l'ont précédé, Farabi l'est aussi des grands penseurs de l'Antiquité grecque, et plus particulièrement de Platon et Aristote. Mais il réalisera une synthèse originale et posera une problématique qui lui est propre pour aborder, dans son Kitāb al-ḥurūf(Le livre des lettres), les questions de la naissance du langage et des sciences. Il en ressort un recours et un rapport au langage qui sont tout à fait différents de ceux de ses contemporains. Avec Farabi, la langue philosophique arabe est née, et cette langue a quitté le terrain de l'oralité pour celui de l'écrit. (shrink)

This article focuses on the writing styles employed by the Andalusi calligraphers specialised in the production of Quranic manuscripts, between the 5th/11th and the 6th/12th centuries. During this crucial period, the shape, aspect, and concept of the muṣḥaf underwent a profound transformation in the Iberian Peninsula. In particular, the notion of “Quranic script” became more fluid, elusive even, mainly owing to the introduction of Maġribī round scripts for transcribing the Sacred Book. This article aims to demonstrate that all the calligraphic (...) traits found in Maġribī “Quranic” styles were ultimately derived from the scripts employed in coeval, non-Quranic manuscripts. Also presented here is a discussion of the activity of some Andalusi copyists of the period, their aesthetic models, their social status, and of the cultural context emerging from the material aspects and colophons of the manuscripts they produced. Objective:To describe the professional values of the nurse lectures according to 241 nursing students, who participated voluntarily, in three different universities of Bogotá.Methodology:This is a quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional study that applied the Nurses Professional Values Scale—permission secured—Spanish; three dimensions of values were applied: ethics, commitment, and professional knowledge.Ethical consideration:Project had ethical review and approval from an ethics committee and participants were given information sheets to read before they agreed to participate in the project.Findings:It was concluded that nursing students, in general, (...) do perceive these values in their professors, and they give priority to the dimension of ethics, followed by the knowledge dimension, and finally, commitment.Discussion:It is evident that professional values are transmitted by professors and students place importance to such values. Values related to the other’s care are paramount in nursing training in Colombia as well as in other countries.Conclusion:It was found that participating students observed professors directly in relation to values focused on direct patient care, respect for privacy, respect for life, while matters related to professional improvement, participation in unions were not actually analyzed may be due to poor promotion activities and unions during undergraduate studies. The results obtained are primary approach to the study of values related to nursing, a topic which needs to be researched, something vital to all the country offering nursing training programs. This study is defined within the context of the critical posthuman project of decentring humanist subjectivity. We argue that because agential realism, and the agency and performativity that go with it, do not enable non-human matter to be accountable, only human matter, in its intra-active becoming with non-human matter, can support an ethical project. Secondly, we map our understanding of Barad’s agential realism, explaining the importance of agential cuts in phenomena-in-their-becoming that are the world worlding itself, and evaluate ethics, agency, (...) and performativity in this material-discursive framework. Thirdly, understanding the material-discursive to underpin storied matter, we engage it via some clarification of narrative, and narrative agency. We conclude that much organic or inorganic nature as non-human matter is directional and responsive, so alive and generative and, in this sense, capable of worlding itself. In recent years, preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) of IVF embryos have gained much traction in clinical assisted reproduction for preventing various genetic defects, including Down syndrome. However, such genetic tests inevitably reveal the sex of IVF embryos by identifying the sex (X and Y) chromosomes. In many countries with less stringent IVF regulations, information on the sex of embryos that are tested to be genetically normal is readily shared with patients. This would thus present Muslim patients with unintended opportunities for (...) sex selection based on personal or social biases without any pressing need or valid medical reason. Additionally, there are other patients who claim using PGT for preventing genetic defects as a pretext or “convenient excuse,” with a secret intention to do sex selection when it is banned in their home country. Currently, non-medical sex selection is a highly-controversial and hotly debated issue in Islam, because there is generally a strong preference for having sons over daughters due to widespread cultural norms of elderly parents depending on their sons for financial support, as well as the need for male heirs to continue the family lineage within the backdrop of local patriarchal cultures. There is a risk of gender imbalance and social disequilibrium occurring in Islamic societies due to prevalent sex selection. Hence, the question is whether opportunistic sex selection with PGT would contravene Islamic ethics and principles, which will thus be discussed here. (shrink)

Johannes Steuchius’ disputatio uses Arabic logic to present an historical account of the development of philosophical thought in Arabia before and after the emergence of Islam. Steuchius first proposes that philosophy drew its origins from the East. His evidence for this claim is that many of the Greek philosophers, considered the forefathers of European philosophy, began cultivating their philosophical thinking as a result of exposure to ancient Eastern philosophy. This lecture-form essay examines various orders of relation between visual art and writing focusing on Adorno’s propositions about art as écriture. Following introductory remarks concerning Adorno’s relation to recent and contemporary Conceptual, activist and multi-media practices and his brief descriptions of the “virtuoso” work of Pablo Picasso, it addresses the relational nexus between art and history mediated by names and titles (looking to the work of the German artist who christened himself Andy Hope 1930), the operations of methexis and (...) Sprachcharakter, realism and abstraction, and ideas, both analagous and discontinuous, in the thinking Jacques Derrida and Jean-François Lyotard, each convened under the auspices of Adorno’s somewhat ahistorical understanding of écriture. The creatively elastic notion of écriture suggests that the defining quality of art as enigma is best comprehended “from the perspective of language.”. (shrink)

This monograph explores the logical systems of early logicians in the Arabic tradition from a theoretical perspective, providing a complete panorama of early Arabic logic and centering it within an expansive historical context. By thoroughly examining the writings of the first Arabic logicians, al-Fārābī, Avicenna and Averroes, the author analyzes their respective theories, discusses their relationship to the syllogistics of Aristotle and his followers, and measures their influence on later logical systems. Beginning with an introduction to the writings of the (...) most prominent Arabic logicians, the author scrutinizes these works to determine their categorical logic, as well as their modal and hypothetical logics. Where most other studies written on this subject focus on the Arabic logicians’ epistemology, metaphysics, and theology, this volume takes a unique approach by focusing on the actual technical aspects and features of their logics. The author then moves on to examine the original texts as closely as possible and employs the symbolism of modern propositional, predicate, and modal logics, rendering the arguments of each logician clearly and precisely while clarifying the theories themselves in order to determine the differences between the Arabic logicians’ systems and those of Aristotle. By providing a detailed examination of theories that are still not very well-known in Western countries, the author is able to assess the improvements that can be found in the Arabic writings, and to situate Arabic logic within the breadth of the history of logic. This unique study will appeal mainly to historians of logic, logicians, and philosophers who seek a better understanding of the Arabic tradition. Poser la question de la lecture des Écritures, et spécifiquement de la lecture théologique des Écritures, implique – mais cela est-il si clair ? – qu’une lecture non théologique des Écritures soit vraiment possible, qu’elle n’ait jamais eu lieu. Or, la question de la lecture, c’est-à-dire du « comment lire? », est une question politique, à cause de son arraisonnement à la logique calculante du programme, mais aussi parce qu’elle suppose résolues les questions « pourquoi lire? » et « qui (...) peut lire? ». Et s’agissant plus spécifiquement de la lecture de la Bible, et de ce que l’on appelle une lecture théologique des Écritures, les questions se redoublent. Identifier une certaine lecture cléricale – c’est-à-dire une lecture officielle, et à la limite autoritaire - à la lecture authentiquement théologique possible, ou exclure, en la disqualifiant, toute lecture théologique en lui reprochant par exemple son déficit d’ecclésialité ou de scientificité, c’est s’interdire de penser une certaine lecture théologique des Écritures.To raise the question of reading the Scriptures, and specifically of a theological reading of the Scriptures, implies –is it so obvious? – that a non-theological reading of the Scriptures may be truly possible and has never occurred. But the question of reading, i.e. “how to read?”, is a political question, because it examines the calculating logic of the program, and also because it presupposes that the questions “why read?” and “who can read?” have been resolved. More specifically with regard to reading the Bible, and what is known as a theological reading of the Scriptures, the questions become twofold. To identify a certain clerical reading – i.e. an official, and ultimately authoritarian reading – with the theologically authentic reading possible, or to exclude, by disqualifying it, any theological reading by criticizing its ecclesial or scientific deficiencies, is to deny the possibility of thinking about a certain theological reading of the Scriptures. Fascinating and well-documented in its details of cultural migration and evolution, this book offers a well-balanced perspective on the mutual influence of Arabic and Western worlds during the Middle Ages. It traces the transmission of Greek philosophy and science to the Islamic world, forming a portrait of medieval Muslim thought that illustrates its commonalities with Judaic and Christian teachings as well as its points of divergence. He shows how a particular type of Hellenistic culture made its way through the Syrian (...) Church, the Zoroastrians of Persia, and the pagans of Harran to the Islamic community, attaining its final metamorphosis in northeast Italy, where it constituted an anti-ecclesiastical influence that helped to pave the way for the Renaissance. Trois voix ou groupes de voix témoignent des Écritures juives au temps de Jésus, tant sur la terre nationale que dans la diaspora de langue grecque: les manuscrits de la Mer Morte, les oeuvres de Philon d'Alexan­drie et les livres du Nouveau Testament. Cette situation littéraire Se présente à la vérité comme contradictoire, révélant une réalité complexe, flottante et incertaine : qu'est-ce qu'on mettait exactement sous les dési­gnations « Prophètes », « David » ou même « Loi de Moïse » (...) ? En-deçà des conceptions canoniques des Écritures enjudaïsme et Christianisme, se révèle un « pluriel textuel » dépendant des besoins de groupes et de communautés, d'habitudes et de conceptions de transmission des textes totalement différentes des nôtres, ce qui explique la grande liberté de Jésus, de ses disciples et des auteurs dans leur utilisation des Écritures, en attendant la fixation de ce qu'on désignera par le mot « Bible ».Three voices or groups of voices witness to the jewish Scriptures both on national territory at the time of Jesus, as well as in the Greek language Diaspora : the Dead Sea Scrolls, the works of Philo of Alexandria, and the books of the New Testament. This literary situation seems contradictory and reveals a complex reality, intangible and uncertain. What exactly is found under the designation « Prophets », « Da­vid », or even « Law of Moses » ? Beyond canonical understanding of the Scriptures in Judaism and Christianity, there lies a « textual plurality » totally different from ours, depending on the needs of groups and communities, and customs and ideas about transmission of texts. This explains the great freedom o Jesus, of his disciples, and some authors in their use of the Scriptures, before the text was to be designated by what would be called the “Bible”. (shrink)

Medieval Arabic algebra is a good example of an artificial language.Yet despite its abstract, formal structure, its utility was restricted to problem solving. Geometry was the branch of mathematics used for expressing theories. While algebra was an art concerned with finding specific unknown numbers, geometry dealtwith generalmagnitudes.Algebra did possess the generosity needed to raise it to a more theoretical level—in the ninth century Abū Kāmil reinterpreted the algebraic unknown “thing” to prove a general result. But mathematicians had no motive to (...) rework their theories in algebraic form. Because it offered no advantage over geometry, algebra remained a practical art in both the Islamic world and in Europe until the scientific uphevals of the 17th–18th centuries. (shrink)

In France and in Quebec, the training objectives of education professionals are now contained in repositories of skills. The French repository is strongly influenced by the figure of the ‘reflective practitioner’ (Schön, 1983). This paper presents a training device for future professionals of teaching and education that focuses on interactions between students through the use of practices writing groups, an inter-student correspondence and ‘cooperative institutions’. By analysing some of the materials collected for research purposes during the training, comprehension assumptions are (...) offered about the subjective rearrangements experienced by students and the device capabilities to promote an appropriate acquisition of professional position. In this paper, I argue that a) Cartesian wonder is properly interpreted through Irigaray’s theory of phallic economy and that b) when Cartesian wonder is explicitly reinterpreted through Irigaray’s ethics of sexual difference, it must be considered in the mode of écriture. To support these two contentions, this paper unfolds in five parts. I begin by giving an account of Cartesian wonder and an account of Irigaray’s theory of phallic economy and the ethics of sexual difference. After showing how (...) Cartesian wonder is best read as part of the phallic economy, I turn to develop Cartesian wonder and Irigarayan wonder differently, in the mode of écriture [writing]. In order to do so, I first establish that Cartesian wonder, by virtue of its status as a precondition of rational discourse, is aroused through written things, and then I explore how Irigarayan wonder might best be considered between written entities, between two books as bodies.
