Although the genetics of dorsal‐ventral polarity which leads to mesoderm formation in Drosophila are understood in considerable detail, subsequent molecular mechanisms involved in patterning the mesoderm primordium into individual mesodermal subtypes are poorly understood. Two papers published recently (1,2) suggest strongly that an inductive signal from dorsal ectoderm is involved in subdividing the underlying mesoderm, and present evidence that one of the signalling factors is Decapentaplegic (Dpp), a member of the bone morphogenetic protein subgroup of the Transforming Growth Factor‐β (TGF‐β) (...) super family of proteins. „Historische Verantwortung“ wird zunächst an der Erfahrung von Nationalsozialismus und Holocaust diskutiert. Die moralische Reflexion führt auf einen kollektiven Begriff historischer Verantwortung, der auf einen kommunikativ-dynamischen Prozess der Bearbeitung des geschichtlichen Bedeutungsraums verweist. Systematischer Kern ist eine politische Ethik in internationaler Perspektive, die retrospektive wie prospektive Relevanz besitzt.

Unter dem Eindruck einer "Renaissance des Religiösen" einerseits und der zunehmenden Politisierung von Religionen andererseits rückt die Verhältnisbestimmung von Politik und Religion im staatlichen wie im internationalen Kontext verstärkt in den Fokus des politischen und gesellschaftlichen Interesses. In den letzten Jahren trägt auch die politische Philosophie dieser Situation vermehrt Rechnung, was sich in einer steigenden Zahl von Veröffentlichungen zu diesem Thema niederschlägt. Dabei kann sie auf eine reiche Tradition philosophischer Modelle zum Neben-, Mit- oder Gegeneinander von Politik und Religion zurückblicken. (...) "In this paper I shall attempt to sketch a defense of the plain man's view that the job of the judge, qua judge is to apply the law." What seems to have lead to the other view is the pervasive role of policy and principle in the justification of judicial decisions. This is no argument, however, for the existence of discretion: "For while it must be admitted that judges are entitled to appeal to certain general policies and principles, this by (...) no means implies that they are entitled to exercise discretionary judgment in the formulation of such standards." With Dworkin, distinguishes weak and strong discretion: the former means merely final or controversial; the latter implying that judges are at some point free to reach decisions not controlled by authoritative standards. Agrees with Dworkin that non-rule standards are part of law. "Both Dworkin and I are in agreement that law is a system of entitlements, although, as we shall see, we differ as to what is their basis." "At any rate, we share the view that a litigant before a court of law is not in the position of one begging a favor from a potential benefactor, but rather in that of one demanding a particular decision as a matter of right, as something to which the law entitles him. Such a demand has two aspects: a claim that a right exists which the law recognizes; a claim that this right takes precedence over any competing legal rights or obligations involved. Let us refer to these two sorts of claims respectively as ones involving decisions as to recognition, and weight.:" Argues that we cannot distinguish between legal moral principles and non-legal moral principles without a rule of recognition. The same is true for the problem of establishing weight between various principles - here we have to consider how well a principle coheres with the institutional practice of a legal system. "[I]t is the distinctive feature of the institutionalized role of the judiciary, in contrast to the legislative, that it may not directly base decisions on substantive considerations of the value of competing social policies." After a discourse about the literature on visual acuity before Hume, I discuss how the "size" of visual objects is defined and determined. I shall then present circumstantial, but commanding, evidence for the influence of James Jurin's Essay upon Distinct and Indistinct Vision on Hume's thought. This work contains well-supported findings incompatible with claims made in T 1.2, "Of the ideas of space and time," and elsewhere. Specifically, the prominent principle of the Treatise, "[w]hat consists of parts is distinguishable into (...) them, and what is distinguishable is separable" (T 1.2.1.3; SBN 27) is shown to be false. A powerful principle, it is a premise to the most important arguments of the Treatise, but is shunned in the Enquiry and later writings because, I believe, Hume had read Jurin. (shrink)

The approach of a "transformative phenomenology" was wonfrom a comprehensive analysis of Asien philosophies. In most Asianphilosophies the knowledge about life is not only a descriptive onebut rather a transformative knowledge. This means that the analysisof the life changes and realizes our life in a new way and transformsit from within. It is tried in using the approach of eastasienphilosophies as an startingpoint to deepen and transform certaintrends of phenomenology. Going beyond a "descriptive" and"hermeneutical phenomenology" a "transformative phenomenology"is proposed in (...) which the process of its own execution will be aconstitutive element of the method itself. The analysis of phenomenaisn't longer an act of pure objectivation but a transformation for myperception and existence. The transformation which is performed bythe phenomenological work is in this way always connected with myway to live. In the work I encounter my own experience with allpossible consequences which an intensive meeting can have.Phenomenology don't mean any longer to describe phenomena as a"pure spectator" but transform myself as a process of Bildung withinthe encounter with my own social, bodily and thinking experience. Ricoeur developed a very elaborated philosophy of religion. At the same time, he always moved along interdisciplinary borders of philosophy, theology, exegesis, historical and language sciences. His religious concerns are in this sense related to pre-philosophical experiences that within certain fields lend themselves to hermeneutical articulation. His analysis of the Scriptures in terms of narrativity deals with biblical texts. However, he doesn’t speak as a theologian,but as a philosopher, since the question of a philosophical and theological hermeneutics is from his (...) own point of view closely related to the fundamentaltension between autonomy and heteronomy. This paper regards his work as a new form of French philosophy of religion, and as a result of this includes a criticalconsideration of the pre-textual sphere understood as an absolute “priority”. This absolute “priority” should be presupposed by any hermeneutics of the written revelation, even when it is not able to provide a final response to its radical-phenomenological implications. Eine solche radikal phänomenologische Problematik wird dabei unter dem umfassenden Begriff der Narrativität subsumiert. Entsprechend wird im Buch konkret analysiert, dass solches „Sagen“ überall dort stattfindet, wo sich Leben als selbstaffektive Passibilität ohne irgendeine Differenz vollzieht: im reinen Cogito als „Ich kann“, im Fleisch als Affekt und Trieb, in der kulturellen Lebenswelt als Ökonomie und Ideologie. Diesem konsequenten Aufbau gehorchen die beiden Hauptteile (...) I und II, wobei sich die Einzeluntersuchungen solcher Narrativität in ihrer lebensphänomenologischen Ursprünglichkeit von der klassischen Bewusstseinslehre wie der ihr entsprechenden Ontologie als einer „Metaphysik der Repräsentation“ in all ihren wirkungsgeschichtlichen Formen abgrenzen. Ein solcher Zugang zur Lebensphänomenologie wird auf diese Weise zum ersten Mal in der Forschung durchgeführt und damit gleichzeitg ein fundamentaler Beitrag zum Verständnis des Denkens Michels Henrys und den Aufgaben der neueren Phänomenologie geleistet. Auf diesem Weg übernimmt die absolute Lebensselbstaffektion immer konkreter die Aufgabe der immanenten Urphänomenalisierung als inner-narrative Primärindividuierung.
