El estudio parte de la discusión de De anima, III, 11, 434a7-10: a diferencia de las interpretaciones más difundidas del pasaje, que dependen considerablemente del comentario de Filopón, aquí se busca reconstruir la actividad de medición, planteada en relación de analogía con la “imaginación deliberativa”, a la luz de procedimientos de descomposición y recomposición de figuras geométricas, muy difundidos en los siglos V-IV a.C., de los cuales se presentan también ilustraciones numismáticas. En la misma línea se puede situar tanto la (...) referencia de Ética Nicomáquea, III, 5, 1112b20-21 al “análisis” de las figuras, como el de Ética Nicomáquea, VI, 9, 1142a23-29 al triángulo como “extremo”. A este modelo metrético-espacial de la phantasia bouleutikē se añade uno de tipo logístico-temporal, que es mencionado en De anima, III, 7, 431b7-8 y en De memoria, 2, 453a15-16, con una interesante confirmación en Tucídides, I, 138, 3, donde Temístocles es comparado con un “habilísimo gnōmōn”. En ambos casos, los modelos matemáticos en los que se inspira el hombre que imagina mientras trata de comprender qué es obrar bien, aquí y ahora, no son productos refinados de ciencia teórica, sino que pertenecen a aquellas “matemáticas de los mercaderes”, que Platón desaconsejaba practicar para alcanzar la visión del verdadero bien La reseña no presenta resumen. La autora aborda el problema de los entes matemáticos intermedios analizando MetafiSica l017a9-l4, por ser este pasaje, simultáneamente, fuente ycrítica de la teoría que Aristóteles atribuye a Platón. El objetivo es identificar cuatro puntos de orientación que ofrezcan una base para el diálogo entre las encontradas posiciones respecto del problema. Gracias a ellos, se pone de manifiesto que Aristóteles aborda la cuestión de la naturaleza inteligible de los entes matemáticos recortándola -con el bisturí del aparato conceptual de su propia ousiología- (...) de la perspectiva mucho más ampliade Platón. Al romper la continuidad entre matemática y dialéctica. Aristóteles"reduce" y demuele la imagen de la concepción matemática de Platón. (shrink)

A partir de un caso presentado en el Eutifrón (2a-5d), se analiza la contraposición, latente ya en la época de Platón, entre, de un lado, un orden de justicia ideal y universal, válido para todo hombre en cuanto hombre, y, de otro lado, las leyes positivas propias de una determinada comunidad o las acciones particulares de sus miembros. Esta contraposición es concebida en una perspectiva que se orienta tanto al futuro como al pasado: en el primer caso, se reconoce en (...) ella un estadío muy antiguo de la reflexión filosófica y jurídica, que lleva hasta la definición de los “derechos humanos”; en el segundo caso, se analizan los modos en que Platón sugiere, particularmente en algunos pasajes de las Leyes, la posibilidad de efectuar una mediación entre lo “justo en sí” y la justicia de las leyes positivas particulares o de las acciones de los individuos.---“Is it just to accuse one’s own father of homicide for having let a dependant die? Ref lect ions on human r ights in Plato”. From a case presented in Euthyphro (2a-5d), the paper analyzes the contraposition, already latent in Plato’s time, between, on the one hand, an ideal and universal order of justice, valid for any human as such and, on the other, the positive laws of a specific community or the particular actions of its members. This contraposition is conceived from a perspective oriented as much towards the future as towards the past: in the first case, a very old stage of philosophical and juridical reflections is recognized in it that leads to the definition of “human rights”; in the second case, the paper analyzes the ways in which Plato suggests the possibility, particularly in some passages of the Laws, of performing a mediation between “the just in itself” and the justice of particular positive laws or the actions of individuals. A partire dalla metà del Novecento, dopo una modernità dominata da prospettive di stampo deontologistico o utilitaristico, la filosofia pratica contemporanea ha visto il sorgere di una ripresa di interesse per un’etica “in prima persona”, in grado di offrire una prospettiva integrale sul soggetto e centrata sullo sviluppo del suo carattere e della sua personalità; in breve, si è assistito a un nuovo potente ingresso in scena dell’idea del bene, e, con essa, della virtù quale via maestra per conseguire il (...) fine adeguato della vita umana. This is a welcome reprint of a book that continues to grow in importance.

There is a substantial difference between our way of "philosophizing", born out of Descartes' clear and well-defined thinking and bent on building alternative (aut-aut) models, and the classical (especially Platonic-Aristotelian) way where a constant use of technical and methodical pluralism serves to juxtapose different (et-et) schemes necessary to grasp an intrinsically one-manifold reality. The ancient Philosophers bring a great wealth of schemes into play, albeit in different forms. This is to say that one could also come across statements that are (...) clearly mismatched and sometimes even at odds with one another, without either giving rise to a real contradiction or (even less so) a quasi relativistic viewpoint. Quite the contrary, an approach of this kind focuses on the necessary knowledge of a reality which, however, is multiform. By assuming this interpretative paradigm and applying it to some of the most pivotal reflections of the Sophists, Plato and Aristotle, the Authors of the contributions herein provide a number of particularly eloquent examples of that typically "Greek" movement, which is to proceed steadily by association of possibilities, rejecting the either/or solicitations and hinging their reflections upon the more open and dynamic "and-and" combination. The authors believe that many of the puzzles of Ancient philosophy that have involved and divided scholars can acquire a new and convincing explanation with this paradigm. (shrink)

The relations between reason, motivation and value present problems which, though ancient, remain intractable. If values are objective and rational how can they move us and if they are dependent on our contingent desires how can they be rational? E. J. Bond makes a bold attack on this dilemma. The widespread view among philosophers today is that judgements contain an irreducible element of personal commitment. To this Professor Bond proposes an account of values as objective and value judgements as true (...) or false, employing a distinction between grounding and motivating reasons to establish their connection with action. He defines and tests his position against a number of recent theories, providing in the process forceful criticism of Williams, Wiggins, Foot, Narveson and Nagel, among others. Derek Parfit’s view of personal identity raises questions about whether advance decisions refusing life-saving treatment should be honored in cases where a patient loses psychological continuity; it implies that these advance decisions would not be self-determining at all. However, rather than accepting that an unknown metaphysical ‘further fact’ underpins agential unity, one can accept Parfit’s view but offer a different account of what it implies morally. Part II of this article argues that contractual obligations provide a moral basis for honoring (...) advance decisions refusing life-saving and/or life-sustaining medical treatment; advance decisions have similarities to contracts, such as life insurance policies and will-contracts, that come into effect when the psychological discontinuity is through death. The aim of this study is to explore how nurses perceive patient participations of patients over 75 years old undergoing hemodialysis treatment in dialysis units, and of their next of kin. Ten nurses told stories about what happened in the dialysis units. These stories were analyzed with critical discourse analysis. Three discursive practices are found: (1) the nurses’ power and control; (2) sharing power with the patient; and (3) transferring power to the next of kin. The first and the predominant (...) discursive practice can be explained with an ideology of paternalism, in which the nurses used biomedical explanations and the ethical principle of benefice to justify their actions. The second can be explained with an ideology of participation, in which the nurses used ethical narratives as a way to let the patients participate in the treatment. The third seemed to involve autonomous decision-making and the ethical principle of autonomy for the next of kin in the difficult end-of-life decisions. (shrink)

We have identified a sample of 53 societies outside of the classical Himalayan and Marquesean area that permit polyandrous unions. Our goal is to broadly describe the demographic, social, marital, and economic characteristics of these societies and to evaluate some hypotheses of the causes of polyandry. We demonstrate that although polyandry is rare it is not as rare as commonly believed, is found worldwide, and is most common in egalitarian societies. We also argue that polyandry likely existed during early human (...) history and should be examined from an evolutionary perspective. Our analysis reveals that it may be a predictable response to a high operational sex ratio favoring males and may also be a response to high rates of male mortality and, possibly, male absenteeism. Other factors may contribute, but our within-polyandry sample limits analysis. (shrink)
