Cet article porte sur les obsidiennes trouvées au cours des fouilles récentes menées dans les niveaux pré-et protopalatiaux, à l’intérieur du palais de Malia ou à proximité immédiate. Ce matériel a été examiné sous différents angles, et tout d’abord du point de vue de la technique de taille. Plusieurs ateliers ont été reconnus. Huit types de nucléi ont été distingués, ainsi que divers outils utilisés pour la taille. Ces pièces sont à dater pour la plupart du MA IIA-IIB et témoignent (...) de l’existence d’une industrie développée dès cette époque. Parallèlement, des analyses élémentaires par Particle Induced X-ray Emission ont été réalisées pour en déterminer la provenance. Comme attendu dans cette région, l’essentiel des pièces provient des sources égéennes de Mélos et Gyali. Les cinq artefacts restants sont attribués par leur signature géochimique à des sources anatoliennes de Cappadoce. Cette identification contribue à la documentation des réseaux de diffusion régionaux dès le MA II et souligne l’intérêt d’analyses ciblées de certains artefacts d’obsidienne dans cette région pour rechercher des provenances non-égéennes. Au cours de la campagne de 1985 au palais de Malia, un dépôt de fondation a été identifié contre un mur qui peut être attribué à une première installation palatiale. Ce dépôt était constitué par une théière du type de Patrikiès enfermée dans une petite boîte d'ammouda. Les parallèles existants montrent que le dépôt de Malia présente un caractère original. En outre la date haute du vase (MA III - MM I A) fait remonter à cette époque la date de (...) construction de l'édifice protopalatial. Il apparaît probable enfin que d'autres dépôts de fondation, jusqu'ici non reconnus, ont existé dans le palais ou sur son emplacement, scandant les diverses phases d'un développement architectural continu. Michel Hue et Olivier Pelon, La salle à piliers du palais de Malia et ses antécédents. P, 1-36 La salle à piliers ou «salle hypostyle» du palais de Malia présente une architecture que l'on a parfois rapprochée de prototypes égyptiens. Dans le cadre des recherches menées depuis 1964 sur l'architecture et la chronologie du palais, cette salle a été réétudiée en 1990. La fouille a révélé la présence dans une couche de destruction MR IA de fragments de stucs (...) peints à motifs, un fait exceptionnel au palais. Manifestement venue de l'étage, cette fresque confirme l'analyse de J. W. Graham qui voyait dans la salle de l'étage une salle d'apparat, probablement une salle de banquets. Par ailleurs une série de bases trouvées sous le niveau du sol dans l'alignement des piliers de la salle actuelle établit que, dès l'époque protopalatiale (MM IA-MM II), le schéma de la salle à piliers existait déjà sur le même emplacement. Les origines de cette architecture sont donc à rechercher en Crète même bien plutôt qu'à l'extérieur. (shrink)

Olivier Pelon et Anne Schmitt Étude en laboratoire des céramiques dites de Vassiliki (Crète orientale) p. 431-442. La céramique minoenne dite de Vassiliki est datée du Minoen Ancien II et se rencontre sur la plupart des sites crétois de cette époque ; très reconnaissable, elle se caractérise par un décor flammé constitué de plaques irrégulières, rouges orangées et noires. Pour la détermination de son lieu de production, on a procédé à l'étude chimique globale par fluorescence X, complétée par (...) une étude pétrographique, de divers échantillons provenant de Malia, de Myrtos-Pyrgos, de Myrtos-Fournou Koryphi et de Vassiliki même. Cette étude conduit à distinguer deux groupes de composition chimique différente. Le premier, bien représenté à Malia et à Vassiliki – ce qui autorise l'hypothèse d'échanges entre les deux sites –, pourrait provenir de Vassiliki. Le second, de facture beaucoup plus grossière et beaucoup plus abondant que le premier à Malia, est, selon toute vraisemblance, de provenance locale ; les caractéristiques de l'argile utilisée le rapprochent en effet de celle des formations métamorphiques du massif du Sélinari, à quelques kilomètres à l'Est du site. Les recherches menées en 1992 à l'intérieur et aux alentours immédiats de la salle IX 2 se situaient dans le prolongement de celles de 1990 qui avaient permis de détecter l'existence, au-dessous et au pied des piliers de cette salle dite «hypostyle», d'une série de bases de poteaux qui faisaient remonter le plan de la salle à supports multiples à l'époque protopala- tiale. Leurs résultats confirment la succession stratigraphique, au Nord de la cour centrale du palais, d'un important bâtiment prépalatial (...) (MA IIB) dont l'orientation est déjà celle du palais postérieur et de deux phases palatiales (MA III-MM II et MM III-MR I) d'un même dispositif architectural de salle à supports multiples. (shrink)

En 1936, F. Chapouthier découvrait sous le sol de la pièce III 2 du palais de Malia deux épées de bronze ; le pommeau d'os de l'une était décoré d'une rondelle d'or portant un acrobate au repoussé. Ces trouvailles étaient rapportées par lui au premier palais, datation contestée depuis par plusieurs savants. Une fouille complémentaire en 1946 amenait la découverte sous le dallage de la pièce voisine III 1 d'un groupe de petits vases de Chamaizi. En 1981 un nouveau nettoyage (...) du niveau antérieur a été réalisé après dépose du dallage de III 1. Une installation caractéristique avec plates-formes stuquées, rigoles et vases collecteurs, qui n'était connue jusqu'ici que par des photographies, a été remise au jour, soigneusement relevée et étudiée. La chronologie proposée par Chapouthier a été confirmée : la salle stuquée et donc l'épée à l'acrobate trouvée sur son sol sont à dater de l'époque protopalatiale. (shrink)

J. Charbonneaux a étudié en 1928 les différents emplois de deux types de roches, l'ammouda et la sidéropétra, dans l'architecture du palais de Malia. La présente étude, commencée en 1979, montre que d'autres types de roches y ont été utilisés, dont la provenance est plus ou moins proche, et que leur emploi répond le plus souvent à des exigences précises des constructeurs, tant sur le plan architectonique que sur le plan esthétique.

Les Journées maliotes organisées à l'École française d'Athènes les 2 et 3 novembre 2007 portaient sur l'organisation des espaces et l'exploitation des ressources, thèmes qui permettaient d'unir les approches effectuées ces dernières années selon deux échelles différentes, celle de l'agglomération et de l'urbanisme d'une part, celle de l'organisation du territoire d'autre part. Les contributions portent toutes sur des recherches en cours, dont la publication est récente ou proche. Ingvar Johansson has argued that there are not only determinate universals, but also determinable ones. I here argue that this view is misguided by reviving a line of argument to the following effect: what makes determinates falling under a same determinable similar cannot be distinct from what makes them different. If true, some similarities — imperfect similarities between simple determinate properties — are not grounded in any kind of property-sharing. I suggest that determinables are better understood as maximal disjunctions of (...) brutely and imperfectly similar determinates. Such brute similarities have been thought to clash with realism about universals. I argue that this worry stems from the mistaken assumption that perfect and imperfect similarities are relations of a same kind. If exact and inexact resemblances are distinct and heterogeneous explananda, the realist about universals might explain the first thanks to property-sharing, while happily leaving imperfect similarities between properties unexplained. This paper defends hedonic intentionalism, the view that all pleasures, including bodily pleasures, are directed towards objects distinct from themselves. Brentano is the leading proponent of this view. My goal here is to disentangle his significant proposals from the more disputable ones so as to arrive at a hopefully promising version of hedonic intentionalism. I mainly focus on bodily pleasures, which constitute the main troublemakers for hedonic intentionalism. Section 1 introduces the problem raised by bodily pleasures for hedonic intentionalism and (...) some of the main reactions to it. Sections 2 and 3 rebut two main approaches equating bodily pleasures with non- intentional episodes. More precisely, section 2 argues that bodily pleasures cannot be purely non-intentional self-conscious feelings, by relying on Brentano’s objection to Hamilton’s theory of pleasure. Section 3 argues that bodily pleasures cannot be non-intentional sensory qualities by relying on Brentano’s objections to Stumpf’s theory of pleasure. Section 4 develops a brentanian view of the intentionality of bodily pleasures by claiming bodily pleasures are directed at a sui generis class of sensory qualities. Section 5 presents an objection to Brentano’s later theory of pleasure according to which all sensory pleasures are directed at sensing acts. (shrink)

Nous partageons le problème de savoir comment faire face à autant d'humains si semblables et si différents. A autant d'êtres qui ne peuvent interpréter le fait d'exister sans se comparer les uns aux autres, sans se distinguer les uns des autres, et qui doivent néanmoins cohabiter. Et de savoir comment ces humains peuvent d'autant plus se distinguer qu'ils prennent la place successivement les uns les autres, qu'ils reprennent les mêmes traces et doivent les réinterpréter. La première formulation du problème est (...) plutôt celle de la problématologie, dans la mesure où elle place au centre de la condition humaine le langage ordinaire, l'incessante différence de la question et de la réponse. C'est par elle que les humains mesurent ce qui les éloigne ou les rapproche et qu'ils règlent leurs désaccords. La seconde formulation du problème est plutôt celle de l'herméneutique, dans la mesure où elle place au centre de la condition humaine la condition interprétative, où chaque génération doit réinterpréter le monde où elle se découvre, pour reprendre la conversation rompue par la mort. En exposant ces deux " gestes " élémentaires du questionnement, en construisant l'écart entre deux traditions philosophiques de styles aussi hétérogènes, sans chercher à les subordonner l'un à l'autre, il s'est agi de penser une éthique de l'interrogativité. Ce sens de l'interrogation peut seul orienter nos " éthiques de responsabilité " et nous remettre ensemble dans un monde où nous comparaissons d'autant plus heureux de nous distinguer que nous nous effaçons devant l'autre. The rise of blockchain as a techno-solution in the development sector underscores the critical imbalances of data power under ‘computational capitalism’. This article will consider the political economy of techno-solutionist and blockchain discourses in the developing world, using as its object of study blockchain projects in Pacific Island nations. Backed by US State Department soft power initiatives such as Tech Camp, these projects inculcate tech-driven notions of economic and political development, or ICT4D, while opening up new terrains for data accumulation (...) and platform control. Blockchain developers in search of proof of concept have found the development sector a fecund space for tech experimentation as they leverage a desire for tech-development and exploit regulatory weakness. The material implications of blockchain projects and discourse have been to create governance solutions which bypass the developing world state as a largely corrupting intermediary. In the Pacific, this has meant blockchain supply-chain management systems, proprietary financial innovation in humanitarian relief and an Asian Development Bank project to manage indigenous Fijian lands exclusively on the blockchain. In all these instances, discourses of solutionism, innovation and data empowerment have been deployed in aid of blockchain cartographies of control. (shrink)

Some generic generalizations have both a descriptive and a normative reading. The generic sentence “Philosophers care about the truth”, for instance, can be read as describing what philosophers in fact care about, but can also be read as prescribing philosophers to care about the truth. On Leslie’s account, this generic sentence has two readings due to the polysemy of the kind term “philosopher”. In this paper, I first argue against this polysemy account of descriptive/normative generics. In response, a contextualist semantic (...) theory for generic sentences is introduced. Based on this theory, I argue that descriptive/normative generics are contextually underspecified. (shrink)

This book presents the framework for a new, comprehensive approach to cognitive science. The proposed paradigm, enaction, offers an alternative to cognitive science's classical, first-generation Computational Theory of Mind. _Enaction_, first articulated by Varela, Thompson, and Rosch in _The Embodied Mind_, breaks from CTM's formalisms of information processing and symbolic representations to view cognition as grounded in the sensorimotor dynamics of the interactions between a living organism and its environment. A living organism enacts the world it lives in; its embodied (...) action in the world constitutes its perception and thereby grounds its cognition. _Enaction_ offers a range of perspectives on this exciting new approach to embodied cognitive science. Some chapters offer manifestos for the enaction paradigm; others address specific areas of research, including artificial intelligence, developmental psychology, neuroscience, language, phenomenology, and culture and cognition. Three themes emerge as testimony to the originality and specificity of enaction as a paradigm: the relation between first-person lived experience and third-person natural science; the ambition to provide an encompassing framework applicable at levels from the cell to society; and the difficulties of reflexivity. Taken together, the chapters offer nothing less than the framework for a far-reaching renewal of cognitive science. Of all the things we do and say, most will never be repeated or reproduced. Once in a while, however, an idea or a practice generates a chain of transmission that covers more distance through space and time than any individual person ever could. What makes such transmission chains possible? For two centuries, the dominant view was that humans owe their cultural prosperity to their powers of imitation. In this view, modern cultures exist because the people who carry them are (...) gifted at remembering, storing and reproducing information. How Traditions Live and Die proposes an alternative to this standard view. What makes traditions live is not a general-purpose imitation capacity. Cultural transmission is partial, selective, often unfaithful. Some traditions live on in spite of this, because they tap into widespread and basic cognitive preferences. These attractive traditions spread, not by being better retained or more accurately transferred, but because they are transmitted over and over. This theory is used to shed light on various puzzles of cultural change and to explain the special relation that links the human species to its cultures. Morin combines recent work in cognitive anthropology with new advances in quantitative cultural history, to map and predict the diffusion of traditions. Who is Daisaku Ikeda? At one level, he is the leader of a religious movement--Soka Gakkai--which began in Japan, where it still has its headquarters, but which now claims 12 million adherents around the world. At another level, he is a globetrotting figure whose formal conversations with diverse writers, thinkers and diplomats--including Arnold Toynbee, Joseph Rotblat and Mikhail Gorbachev--have garnered him an international profile, as well as academic recognition. Perhaps above all else, Daisaku Ikeda is viewed as a campaigner for (...) peace. And it is Ikeda's specific contribution to peacebuilding, notably through the central emphasis he has placed on the significance of dialogue, that this book explores: the first to do so in a concerted way. Olivier Urbain shows that while Soka Gakkai (the "value society") may stem from the medieval principles of Nichiren Buddhism, under Ikeda's leadership it has taken these classic wisdoms and transformed them. The main contention of this article is that current approaches to ontological emergence are not comprehensive, in that they share a common bias that make them blind to some conceptual space available to emergence. In this article, I devise an alternative perspective on ontological emergence called ‘flat emergence’, which is free of such a bias. The motivation is twofold: not only does flat emergence constitute another viable way to fulfill the initial emergentist promise, but it also allows for making sense (...) of some emergence ascriptions that traditional accounts are unable to accommodate. This study examines to what extent different types of CEOs in family firms influence external and internal stakeholder-related CSP as compared to CEOs in nonfamily firms. Linking family CEO and nonfamily CEO with CSR outcomes, we provide evidence that family CEOs are positively associated with both external and internal CSR, whereas nonfamily CEOs within family firms tend to be negatively associated with both external and internal CSR. We show that the incumbent CEO’s age moderates the above relationships, indicating the existence (...) of shifting family priorities and suggesting a tendency toward CSR conformity as the salience of succession concerns increases. This article presents, an analysis of the opinions of assurance providers regarding the quality and the limitations of sustainability reports and their recommendations to improve them using the Global Reporting Initiative as a framework. The qualitative content analysis of 301 assurance statements for sustainability reports from mining and energy companies provides a comprehensive view of the main outcomes of the assurance process, including its limitations, the application of the GRI principles and suggestions for improving sustainability reports. Taking into account the (...) perceptions of practitioners a priori well informed on the quality of sustainability reports—namely assurance providers—this paper complements the current literature on sustainability reporting and its assurance, including critical approaches that question the reliability of sustainability reports, stakeholder engagement and the accountability of reporting practices. This study contributes to the debates surrounding the quality of sustainability reports, the added value of assurance statements and the ethical issues underlying the assurance process. It also contains important practical implications for auditors, standardization organizations and stakeholders. (shrink)

This chapter has three sections. The first introduces Brentano’s view of sensations by presenting the intentional features of sensations irreducible to features of the sensory objects. The second presents Brentano’s view of sensory objects —which include sensory qualities— and the features of sensations that such objects allow to explain, such as their intensity. The third section presents Brentano’s approach to sensory pleasures and pains, which combines both appeal to specific modes of reference and to specific sensory qualities.
