Les trois sections du discours reprennent les trois parties de l'Introduction à l'étude de la médecine expérimentale (1865). Bergson s'emploie à dégager la " conception de la vérité ", et par conséquent la " philosophie " de Claude Bernard : il voit dans l'œuvre physiologique et médicale du savant (...) confirmation de la théorie de la vie élaborée dans L'évolution Créatrice (1907). In the uprisings of the Arab world, Alain Badiou discerns echoes of the European revolutions of 1848. In both cases, the object was to overthrow despotic regimes maintained by the great powers—regimes designed to impose the will of financial oligarchies. Both events occurred after what was commonly thought to be the end of a revolutionary epoch: in 1815, the final defeat of Napoleon; and in 1989, the fall of the Soviet Union. But the revolutions of 1848 proclaimed for a (...) century and a half the return of revolutionary thought and action. Likewise, the uprisings underway today herald a worldwide resurgence in the liberating force of the masses—despite the attempts of the ‘international community’ to neutralize its power. Twenty years ago, Alain Badiou's first Manifesto for Philosophy rose up against the all-pervasive proclamation of the "end" of philosophy. In lieu of this problematic of the end, he put forward the watchword: "one more step". The situation has considerably changed since then. Philosophy was threatened with obliteration at the time, whereas today it finds itself under threat for the diametrically opposed reason: it is endowed with an excessive, artificial existence. "Philosophy" is everywhere. It serves as a trademark for (...) various media pundits. It livens up cafés and health clubs. It has its magazines and its gurus. It is universally called upon, by everything from banks to major state commissions, to pronounce on ethics, law and duty. In essence, "philosophy" has now come to stand for nothing other than its most ancient enemy: conservative ethics. Badiou's second manifesto therefore seeks to demoralize philosophy and to separate it from all those "philosophies" that are as servile as they are ubiquitous. It demonstrates the power of certain eternal truths to illuminate action and, as such, to transport philosophy far beyond the figure of "the human" and its "rights". C'est du côté du sujet clivé tel que Lacan - notre Hegel - en fait théorie, qu'il faut chercher une issue. Alain Badiou trouve là de quoi refondre, non pas le thème, (...) forclos, d'un sujet de l'Histoire, mais celui des sujets politiques. L'opération ne se peut faire sans étendre le concept lacanien du sujet, lié dès l'abord à deux types d'effets: l'occupation d'une place vide d'un côté, l'excès sur cette place vide de l'autre. Instrument de cette distinction : le couple algèbre/topologie. Il en résulte que le réel, pensable - comme le fait Lacan - sous le concept algébrique de l'objet cause, doit également être reçu sous celui, topologique, de consistance: ontologie en partie double. Le cœur de la question est atteint quand entre en dialectique avec la notion lacanienne du manque, la catégorie nouvelle de destruction. Qu'on ne s'attende pas à ne trouver ici qu'une discussion de théories. Alain Badiou part de la décomposition du marxisme où il voit l'effet de ce que Marx, tout en montrant l'irruption du réel dans la réalité du politique, a continué de penser dans le politique. Résumé La notion de la « personne » est devenue aujourd’hui une notion très floue. D’une certaine manière, il s’agit d’une notion qui paraît n’avoir d’autre pertinence que l’usage qui en est fait pour légitimer, ou invalider, telle ou telle position concernant des problèmes éthiques contemporains. Mais un tel usage s’avère insatisfaisant, faute de pouvoir interroger vraiment la relation que cette notion entretient avec celle de « nature », que l’on précise au besoin comme étant humaine. Or, dans l’histoire du (...) monde, il existe un étant, Jésus de Nazareth, dont il est affirmé que, pour lui, le rapport entre nature et personne ne va pas de soi, comme cela semble être le cas pour les autre hommes. Ce rapport est posé d’une manière très singulière par la théologie catholique, plus précisément par le Concile tenu à Chalcédoine en 451. L’interrogation de ce texte conciliaire peut, dans un premier temps, inquiéter la philosophie en rendant délicat, voire incertain, le rapport entre « nature » et « personne ». Mais nous pensons qu’en se laissant inquiéter de la sorte, la philosophie peut trouver une voie nouvelle pour penser la « personne », au-delà des masques qui, traditionnellement, en tiennent lieu. Alain Deligne est philosophe et Professeur émérite de littérature française à l'Université de Münster (Allemagne). Ses travaux portent sur l'idéalisme allemand (Schopenhauer, Schleiermacher), sur la traduction, la littérature ainsi que sur l'image. Il est coéditeur de catalogues sur la caricature ainsi que de la revue Ridiculosa et l'auteur de la première monographie française sur C. G. Carus (La Terre qui vit - Peinture et savoirs, 2003), et de la première monographie allemande sur Weil (Ein zeitgenôssischer Philosoph, 1998). Du jeune (...) Éric Weil, recommandé par Albert Einstein à Ernst Cassirer, on connaissait son doctorat sur Pomponazzi (1932), son essai sur Plotin et Ficin (1933) et son grand article sur l'intérêt pris à l'histoire (1935). Mais nous ignorions tout d'autres écrits précédents ou contemporains. Grâce au travail d'édition bilingue d'Alain Deligne, nous avons maintenant accès à ses exposés d'étudiant, conférences, articles, interventions radiophoniques ou ses travaux en vue de futures études (1922-1936). Nous pouvons ainsi mieux saisir ce qu'Éric Weil allait devenir : le fondateur d'un système ouvert de compréhension (Logique de la philosophie, 1950) et rester : un philosophe curieux de toutes les formes de savoir. À cette fin, il fallait, sur la base d'archives, restituer ses multiples intérêts en philosophie, sciences, histoire de l'art, germanistique, Renaissance italienne et occultisme. Although it is often held that Aristotle endorses anthropocentric dominionism, Aristotle’s writings include an account of nonhuman value. The interpretation of Aristotle’s natural teleology which assumes that the claim that plants and animals are “for the sake of humans” entails an axiologically anthropocentric view of nature. However, a combination of aspects of Aristotle ethics and natural teleology shows that nature is valuable insofar as it is constituted by natural objects, things with natures. In virtue of having a nature, an object (...) has an end or good toward which it strives. Natural objects thus have morally relevant interests. Because having a nature is sufficient for intrinsic value, it is wrong to associate Aristotle with the dominion thesis. (shrink)

I reconsider Aristotle’s account of perception by way of an ‘organic’ reading of the sensitive mean. I argue that the mean serves as a homeostatic mechanism that allows for the replication of forms in the organs in the process of perceptual alteration. The mean, as a product of properly constituted organs, is that by which Aristotle separates animals from plants.

For Alain Badiou, films think, and it is the task of the philosopher to transcribe that thinking. What is the subject to which the film gives expressive form? This is the question that lies at the heart of Badiouʹs account of cinema. He contends that cinema is an art form that bears witness to the Other and renders human presence visible, thus testifying to the universal value of human existence and human freedom. Through the experience of viewing, the movement (...) of thought that constitutes the film is passed on to the viewer, who thereby encounters an aspect of the world and its exaltation and vitality as well as its difficulty and complexity. Cinema is an impure art cannibalizing its times, the other arts, and people -- a major art precisely because it is the locus of the indiscernibility between art and non-art. Telle est la question que nous nous posons depuis longtemps. Depuis que nous nous connaissons en somme, et que nous avons commencé à travailler ensemble comme directeurs de collection. A un moment donné, nous avons pris cette question à bras-le-corps.0C'est venu, peut-être, d'une remarque à notre propos disant que, un (...) platonicien avec un(e) sophiste, cet attelage qui ne laissait rien échapper devenait pour de bon dangereux. Nous avons ri, et réfléchi. D'abord, nous avons échangé des lettres, jouant avec le plaisir d'une correspondance sporadique, parfois rauque, pendant trois ans. Au beau milieu de quoi nous avons décidé de faire un séminaire commun ailleurs, loin de nos bases : à Johns Hopkins.0On nous a obligés à répondre sans arrière-monde, Alain Badiou en mathématicien-platonicien, Barbara Cassin en philologue-sophiste. A bras-le-corps donc, mais encore latéralement comme on voit. Nous avons alors ressenti la nécessité d'exhiber les éléments clefs à quoi tiennent nos positions, ce qui philosophiquement nous tient. Puis nous avons déroulé les conséquences strictes de ces solidités quant à l'idée que nous nous faisons du rapport homme femme.0Au moment de conclure, nous nous sommes demandé ensemble pourquoi nous choisissions la Grèce. Dans la troisième partie, il affronte une autre forme de critique, celle qui objecterait que la philosophie ne sert à rien quand c’est le monde qu’il s’agit d’abord de changer (pour que les conditions du vrai bonheur y soit enfin accessibles à tous). Enfin, dans une quatrième partie, il revient sur les éléments de sa propre réponse à la question de la «vraie vie», celle que la philosophie nous promet. Reprenant les acquis de L’Etre et l’événement (1988) et de Logiques des mondes (2006), il dessine les contours des questions qu’il reste à aborder et qui feront la matière du troisième volet de ce magnum opus : L’immanence des vérités. From 2001 to 2004, Alain Badiou's lectures focused on the relationship between philosophy and the present moment. The "end of metaphysics," the "death of God," the meaning of life, the goals of society, and other perennial topics raise the question as to whether philosophy can ultimately be contemporary with individual human experience as its object. How can the present moment be legitimately addressed? In response to the classical philosophical issue of existence, Alain Badiou reflects on time not in (...) the sense of its constant unfolding but of its urgency in the present, of being fully engaged with what is taking place in our own lives. The seminar addresses the most fundamental role of philosophy: for Badiou, it cannot confine itself to narrow academic issues but must always return to its eternal question--what does it mean to be fully human, a subject, rather than merely an individual, a speaking animal? This book contains some of Badiou's most inspiring and original work, involving ideas very much at odds with the emphasis one finds in much postmodern philosophy on limitation, repetition, and death. Through a case study, this paper contributes to answer the call to inquiries set by John Dewey in the conclusion of his Theory of Valuation. To move on to ethnography, some requirements explained by Alfred Schutz have also been followed: the study of choices, transactions, and evaluations must be confronted with real situations in real temporality, not with puppets set in motion by social scientists. The present case study is based upon a thorough ethnography of evaluation in a Spanish Moroccan (...) community milieu, conducted in Andalusia and Morocco from 2007 to 2010. The observation discipline, which leads to an original kind of ethnographic data, has been called ethno-accounting by the author, as the point is to take into account what people do actually take into account, instead of claiming to assess things and situations directly. In a lamellar TiAl alloy deformed at room temperature under an orientation that activates slip parallel to the interfaces, the n phase exhibits intralamellar dislocation networks parallel to the primary slip plane and entirely glissile in their habit plane. Their meshes are mainly rectangular with branches all coplanar, screw or near-screw in character and with Burgers vector of and types. Dislocation organization at and in the near-vicinity of these intralamellar networks suggests a reaction between a family of primary coplanar d (...) 011] dislocations that slip in the network habit plane and a family of dislocations that cross-slip from a plane inclined to the lamellae into the network. The reactions result in junctions with Burgers vector that subsequently transform into rectangular units. The presence of these networks is consistent with that of a residual elastic twist between adjacent n lamellae. (shrink)
