    Restoring Peace.Matthew J. Gaudet & William R. O'Neill - 2011 - Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics 31 (1):37-55.
TRAGICALLY, ETHNIC CONFLICTS HAVE BECOME ONE OF THE HALLMARKS of the post-Cold War era. In response to this, two distinct traditions appear to be emerging. The first continues the classical just war tradition while the second represents a new "reconciliation tradition," built largely around questions of restorative justice in areas of social division. Our goal in this essay is to begin a rapprochement of these divergent traditions by asking the question, what does a restorative justice perspective offer to the just war (...)

Physical Activity Is Associated With Improved Eating Habits During the COVID-19 Pandemic.Diego G. D. Christofaro, André O. Werneck, William R. Tebar, Mara C. Lofrano-Prado, Joao Paulo Botero, Gabriel G. Cucato, Neal Malik, Marilia A. Correia, Raphael M. Ritti-Dias & Wagner L. Prado - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The aim of this study was to analyze the association between physical activity and eating habits during the COVID-19 pandemic among Brazilian adults. A sample of 1,929 participants answered an online survey, however 1,874 were included in the analysis. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on eating habits was assessed inquiring about participants' intake of fruits, vegetables, fried foods, and sweets during the pandemic. Physical activity was assessed by asking participants about their weekly frequency, intensity and number of minutes/hours engaging (...)

    Beyond Logical Empiricism.William R. Shea - 1971 - Dialogue 10 (2):223-242.
The mainstream of the philosophy of science in the second quarter of this century—the so-called “logical empiricist” or “logical positivist” movement—assumed that theoretical language in science is parasitic upon observation language and can be eliminated from scientific discourse by disinterpretation and formalization, or by explicit definition in or reduction to observational language. But several fashionable views now place the onus on believers in an observation language to show how such a language is meaningful in the absence of a theory. In the (...)

Pancreatitis is a complex, progressively destructive inflammatory disorder. Alcohol was long thought to be the primary causative agent, but genetic contributions have been of interest since the discovery that rare PRSS1, CFTR and SPINK1 variants were associated with pancreatitis risk. We now report two associations at genome-wide significance identified and replicated at PRSS1-PRSS2 and X-linked CLDN2 through a two-stage genome-wide study. The PRSS1 variant likely affects disease susceptibility by altering expression of the primary trypsinogen gene. The CLDN2 risk allele is (...)

The colorful conservative: American conversations with the ancients from Wheatley to Whitman.R. O. P. Lopez - 2011 - Lanham, MD: University Press of America.
In The Colorful Conservative, R.O.P. Lopez culls important insights into American culture from the works of Phillis Wheatley, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, William Wells Brown, and Walt Whitman. Lopez contends that many of the tensions that emerged prior to the Civil War remain unresolved; thus, the nineteenth century never ended and Americans still live in the literary framework of the 1800s. Beyond political distinctions of the left and the right, there are really four poles: The Left, The (...)

    Mapping collective behavior in the big-data era.R. Alexander Bentley, Michael J. O'Brien & William A. Brock - 2014 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 37 (1):63-76.
The behavioral sciences have flourished by studying how traditional and/or rational behavior has been governed throughout most of human history by relatively well-informed individual and social learning. In the online age, however, social phenomena can occur with unprecedented scale and unpredictability, and individuals have access to social connections never before possible. Similarly, behavioral scientists now have access to “big data” sets – those from Twitter and Facebook, for example – that did not exist a few years ago. Studies of human (...)

Interventionist applied conversation analysis: Collaborative transcription and repair based learning in aviation.William A. Tuccio, David A. Esser, Gillian Driscoll, Ian R. McAndrew & MaryJo O. Smith - 2016 - Pragmatics and Society 7 (1):30-56.
Pragmatic language competence plays a central role in how aviation flight crews perform crew resource management ; this competence significantly affects aviation safety. This paper contributes to existing literature on interventionist applications of conversation analysis by defining and evaluating a novel collaborative transcription and repair based learning method for aviation CRM learning. CTRBL was evaluated using a quantitative quasi-experimental repeated-measure design with 42 novice, university pilots. Results support that CTRBL is an effective, low-resource CRM learning method that will benefit from (...)
