  20. A Christian Ethics of Blame: Or, God says, "Vengeance is Mine".Robert J. Hartman - 2023 - Religious Studies:1-16.
There is an ethics of blaming the person who deserves blame. The Christian scriptures imply the following no-vengeance condition: a person should not vengefully overtly blame a wrongdoer even if she gives the wrongdoer the exact negative treatment that he deserves. I explicate and defend this novel condition and argue that it demands a revolution in our blaming practices. First, I explain the no-vengeance condition. Second, I argue that the no-vengeance condition is often violated. The most common species of blame (...)

    Single‐Gene Sequencing in Newborn Screening: Success, Challenge, Hope.Robert J. Currier - 2018 - Hastings Center Report 48 (S2):37-38.
Some state‐based newborn screening programs in the United States already use sequencing technology, as a secondary screening test for individual conditions rather than as a broad screening tool. Newborn screening programs sequence an individual gene, such as the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator, which causes cystic fibrosis, after an initial biochemical test suggests that a baby might have a condition related to that gene. The experiences of state public health departments with individual‐gene sequencing illustrate both the usefulness of the technology (...)

As the above quote clearly highlights, it is the responsibility of researchers and research supervisors to be certain that their research staff and students assistants are very familiar with all of the ethical principles and current standards relevant to the research they are conducting. Indeed, they must take an active role in being certain that their research staff and students complete appropriate training in these ethical principles and standards, and how they apply them to the research context in which they (...)

  32. Foucault, Borges, Heterotopia: Producing Knowledge in Other Spaces.Robert J. Topinka - 2010 - Foucault Studies 9:54-70.
Arguably the most famous heterotopia that appears in Foucault’s work is the Chinese encyclopedia, which originates in the fiction of Jorge Luis Borges. Drawing on this citation of Borges, this article examines Foucault’s notion of the heterotopia as it relates to order and knowledge production. Frequently, heterotopias are understood as sites of resistance. This article argues that shifting the focus from resistance to order and knowledge production reveals how heterotopias make the spatiality of order legible. By juxtaposing and combining many (...)

  34. Richard Price on Promising: A Limited Defense.Robert J. Fogelin - 1992 - In Philosophical interpretations. New York: Oxford University Press.
This essay presents an exposition and limited defense of Richard Price's claim that the “fidelity to promises is properly a branch or instance of veracity,” i.e., the obligation to keep a promise is, for Price, an instance of our obligation to tell the truth. His general idea is this: When one makes an assertion, one is under an obligation to have one's words fit the facts. When one makes an assertion about one's own future actions, one falls under an obligation (...)

Kuhn's Structure of Scientific Revolutions at fifty: reflections on a science classic.Robert J. Richards & Lorraine Daston (eds.) - 2016 - Chicago: University of Chicago Press.
Thomas S. Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions was a watershed event when it was published in 1962, upending the previous understanding of science as a slow, logical accumulation of facts and introducing, with the concept of the “paradigm shift,” social and psychological considerations into the heart of the scientific process. More than fifty years after its publication, Kuhn’s work continues to influence thinkers in a wide range of fields, including scientists, historians, and sociologists. It is clear that The Structure (...)

  41. Negative Elementary Propositions.Robert J. Fogelin - 1992 - In Philosophical interpretations. New York: Oxford University Press.
Contrary to explicit statements in the text of the Tractatus Logico‐Philosophicus, this essay argues that the notion of a negative elementary proposition makes sense within the Tractarian system. The suggestion depends upon separating two strains in Wittgenstein's account of propositional meaning: the picture theory of meaning, and the truth‐functional account of meaning. A proposition could be considered elementary if it contained only one elementary proposition or one elementary picture. In this approach, if p is an elementary proposition, then so is (...)

Richard price on promising: A limited defense.Robert J. Fogelin - 1983 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 21 (3):289-302.
This essay attempts to elucidate and restate in modern terms richard price's reduction of our obligation to keep promises to our obligation to veracity. It next defends this reduction against standard criticisms. This defence is, However, Limited, Since the voluntarists (descartes) and the utility theorists (hume), Whom price is most anxious to refute, Could accept this reduction and reassert their theories with respect to our obligation to veracity itself.

George Will, the well-known pundit, once observed: “A society's recreation is charged with moral significance. Sport—and a society that takes it seriously—would be debased if it did not strictly forbid things that blur the distinction between the triumph of character and the triumph of chemistry.” In opposition, Dan Duchaine, the highly publicized “steroid guru” and counter-culture columnist, declared: “There comes a time for many in competitive athletics where winning is more important than those initial goals of health, recreation, and relaxation.” (...)
