“Busyness” plainly relates to externally observable work or leisure activities, but nevertheless the state itself is entirely subjective. I will argue in what follows, that there may have been fundamental changes in the connection between the external circumstances of work and leisure and internal feelings of “busyness”. Through the last century there have been fundamental shifts in the relationship between the pattern of daily activities, and patterns of societal sub- and superordination. “Are you busy?” may have had a quite different (...)

The ruling class.Gaetano Mosca - 1939 - London,: McGraw-Hill book company. Edited by Hannah D. Kahn & Arthur Livingston.
The 1830s and 1840s are the formative years of modern public health in Britain, when the poor law bureaucrat Edwin Chadwick conceived his vision of public health through public works and began the campaign for the construction of the kinds of water and sewerage works that ultimately became the standard components of urban infrastructure throughout the developed world. This book first explores that vision and campaign against the backdrop of the great "condition-of-England" questions of the period, of what rights and (...)

Anomaly detection based on one-class intelligent techniques over a control level plant.Esteban Jove, José-Luis Casteleiro-Roca, Héctor Quintián, Dragan Simić, Juan-Albino Méndez-Pérez & José Luis Calvo-Rolle - 2020 - Logic Journal of the IGPL 28 (4):502-518.
A large part of technological advances, especially in the field of industry, have been focused on the optimization of productive processes. However, the detection of anomalies has turned out to be a great challenge in fields like industry, medicine or stock markets. The present work addresses anomaly detection on a control level plant. We propose the application of different intelligent techniques, which allow to obtain one-class classifiers using real data taken from the correct plant operation. The performance of each (...)

  19. Stability of nilpotent groups of class 2 and prime exponent.Alan H. Mekler - 1981 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 46 (4):781-788.
Let p be an odd prime. A method is described which given a structure M of finite similarity type produces a nilpotent group of class 2 and exponent p which is in the same stability class as M. Theorem. There are nilpotent groups of class 2 and exponent p in all stability classes. Theorem. The problem of characterizing a stability class is equivalent to characterizing the (nilpotent, class 2, exponent p) groups in that class.

Elite Girls' Schooling, Social Class and Sexualised Popular Culture.Claire Charles - 2013 - Routledge.
Young women’s identities are an issue of public and academic interest across a number of western nations at the present time. This book explores how young women attending an elite school for girls understand and construct ‘empowerment’. It investigates the extent to which, and the ways in which, their constructions of empowerment and identity work to overturn, or resist, key regulations and normative expectations for girls in post-feminist, hyper-sexualised cultural contexts. The book provides a succinct overview of feminist theorisations of (...)

The Reference Class Problem in Evolutionary Biology: Distinguishing Selection from Drift.Michael Strevens - 2016 - In Grant Ramsey & Charles H. Pence (eds.), Chance in Evolution. Chicago: University of Chicago.
Evolutionary biology distinguishes differences in survival and reproduction rates due to selection from those due to drift. The distinction is usually thought to be founded in probabilistic facts: a difference in (say) two variants' average lifespans over some period of time that is due to selection is explained by differences in the probabilities relevant to survival; in the purest cases of drift, by contrast, the survival probabilities are equal and the difference in lifespans is a matter of chance. When there (...)

    A Different Class of Witnesses: Experts in the Courtroom.Gail Stygall - 2001 - Discourse Studies 3 (3):327-349.
This investigation examines the discursive history and contemporary courtroom discourse of expert witnesses in Anglo-American courts, incorporating the methods of Michel Foucault into a Critical Discourse Analysis framework. The history of experts is marked by a profound discontinuity in the role of experts, during the late medieval period, with experts relegated to a witness role instead of a juror role - that of the privately knowledgeable investigator - they previously held. Examination of the discourse of contemporary experts in three high-profile (...)
