Deux lignes caractérisent l’exégèse médiévale de la Bible : elle s’inscrit dans une tradition de réception de la Parole divine, elle considère sa lecture comme un progrès infini. Les Pères représentent le fondement de cette tradition exégétique. Peut-être plus, même : ayant aussi bénéficié de l’inspiration, ils font partie eux-mêmes d’une Écriture sacrée, qui dépasse le canon des textes bibliques. On étudie donc ici, notamment à travers un texte d’Henri de Gand, cette notion des Pères comme sacra Scriptura. Puis on (...) note que certains ouvrages ont joué un rôle déterminant – aux Pères s’ajoutent des auteurs du haut Moyen Âge et même du xii e siècle. L’une des manifestations les plus claires de cette présence est le commentaire anthologique, qui fleurit dans le haut Moyen Âge, mais se poursuit au moins jusqu’à la Catena aurea de Thomas d’Aquin. L’utilisation des Pères est multiple : on ne craint pas d’opposer leurs vues, notamment dans la questio, on recherche aussi dans leurs œuvres des traces des traductions anté-hiéronymiennes. (shrink)

Cet article a pour objet l’étude des commentaires médiévaux de l’épître à Philémon. Après avoir examiné la place de l’épître dans les bibles médiévales, avec ses prologues et ses divisions, puis la traduction latine de la Vulgate et l’histoire du texte, à travers surtout les notes critiques des correctoires, on envisage les prologues des commentaires puis les techniques d’exégèse : divisio textus, étude sémantique, analyse rhétorique, distinctiones et quaestiones. L’étude thématique se limite aux éléments historiques et au traitement (...) du problème de l’esclavage. En annexe, on trouvera la liste des commentaires utilisés, les textes des correctoires sur Philémon et les textes des prologues. (shrink)

Cette article présente l'étude comparative des systèmes éducatifs grecs et chrétiens dans la mesure où tous les deux accordent une place centrale à l'obéissance dans la formation des individus. Il vise à mettre en évidence leur opposition absolue. Chez les grecs l'obéissance joue le rôle d'un outil éducatif destiné à faire de l'élève un être libre. Elle est pensée comme une méthode d'accès à la liberté inséparable d'un enjeu politique : la formation des citoyens libres. L'obéissance au maître, c'est-à-dire la (...) docilité, constitue ainsi la condition de possibilité de l'assujettissement de la partie irrationnelle de l'âme à la partie rationnelle. Or dans le projet éducatif monachique, la lecture de la Bible comme pratique ascétique joue le rôle d'un outil de lutte contre les tentations, non celui d'un moyen d'apprentissage qui vise l'acquisition d'un savoir. Cette pratique ascétique est donc inséparable d'une exigence : la purification de l'âme. Dès lors, l'obéissance devient une voie d'accès à la vertu et le lieu d'une attention exclusive inséparable d'un autre enjeu politique, diamétralement opposé à celui des systèmes grecs : la destruction de toute idée de liberté. Elle ne représente plus une méthode devant conduire à la liberté, mais le terme de la formation des individus. Elle n'est plus visée comme un moyen, mais comme une fin en soi. Elle ne vise plus le développement de la raison, mais la soumission de la volonté. (shrink)

Les exégètes médiévaux ont-ils une attitude particulière à l’égard des récits de la Bible que nous faisons aujourd’hui entrer dans la catégorie du « mythe »? On voudrait répondre à cette question à partir de l’étude des généalogies des chapitres 4 et 5 de la Genèse dans les commentaires composés entre le xii e et le xiv e siècles en Occident. Celles du chapitre 4 (v. 17-22) sont considérées comme un mythe sur les origines de la culture – la vie (...) pastorale, le travail des métaux, la musique, le tissage –, celles du chapitre 5 posent des problèmes divers, notamment du fait de la longueur de la vie des personnages nommés. Il semble que les commentateurs du Moyen Âge soient moins sensibles à la dimension « historique » de ces textes qu’aux enseignements que nous pouvons en tirer sur les fondements de la conduite humaine. L’analyse qu’ils font des structures de ces textes (utilisant notamment la valeur symbolique attachée aux nombres et mettant en relief les différences d’agencement) et les applications tropologiques qu’ils en tirent, puisznt dans l’Écriture sainte les enseignements d’une Parole adressée en permanence à l’homme, permettent de constater que les procédures qu’ils mettent en œuvre sont proches de celles d’une certaine analyse des mythes aujourd’hui. Les correctoires sont des recueils de notes critiques sur le texte (latin) de la Vulgate. Est donné comme exemple le correctoire Sorbonne II (ms. BnF lat. 15554, seconde partie) sur Osée. On y perçoit la richesse des sources (texte massorétique, vieilles latines et manuscrits de la Vulgate, Pères de l’Église, autres correctoires) et on a un exemple de la méthode : les auteurs comparent les textes de leurs bibles au texte massorétique pour déterminer les interpolations, les omissions et les (...) modifications ; ils sont attentifs aux questions de ponctuation. Cet article examine le rôle que joue l’approche philosophique de Maître Eckhart dans son exégèse biblique. À travers une analyse de sa théologie trinitaire, de sa théologie de la création, de sa théorie de l’intellect et de sa philosophie du langage, nous montrons qu’Eckhart interprète la Bible à partir de la « grammaire profonde » qui sous-tend la réalité dans son ensemble. Tout en insistant sur l’importance du « livre des créatures », Eckhart souligne néanmoins que le texte biblique reste (...) indispensable pour la théologie dans la mesure où il parle de l’immanence permanente de toutes choses en Dieu, nonobstant leur efflux sous forme de création. En fin de compte, tous les livres dont parle Eckhart – la Trinité, le monde créé et les Écritures – doivent être laissés en arrière pour céder la place au silence, qui seul nous donne accès à l’unité absolue de l’origine. L'A. pubblica una quaestio di Gilberto di Stratton, contenuta nel ms. Assisi, Bibl. Comunale, 158 dal titolo Utrum aliquod eviternum potuit fuisse Deo coeternum che, a suo avviso, rappresenta forse il primo esempio di difesa della posizione assunta da Tommaso all'interno del dibattito de aeterniate mundi, posizione che, come è noto, fu oggetto di condanna nel 1277 . Nella breve introd. che precede il testo, l'A. sottolinea il fatto che Gilberto oltre a riprendere e ad assumere la posizione di Tommaso, (...) ed in particolare quella della non contradditorietà tra l'esse factum e l'esse aeternum, mostra di conoscere le critiche che aveva mosso Bonaventura al Doctor angelicus e gli argomenti ex infinito formulati dal maestro francescano per dimostrare l'inizio temporale del mondo. Di Gilberto esiste un'altra quaestio contenuta nello stesso ms. e che sembra una versione alterata del De aeternitate di Tommaso e che l'A. ha pubblicato con O. Argerami in Leiden 1993. (shrink)

_ Source: _Volume 24, Issue 2, pp 163 - 223 The paper demonstrates that when translating explicit anthropomorphisms in Scripture, medieval Karaites are neither particularly more nor less literal than their rabbinic counterparts. Indeed, they often propose translations similar to those of Targum Onqelos and Saʿadyah Gaon. Moreover, although their lines of argument are different, both Saʿadyah and the Karaites insist that human language is responsible for corporeal descriptions of God in the Bible, and they resort to the linguistic conventions (...) of figurative language and extension of meaning to justify these theologically disturbing expressions. The Karaites’ contribution consists of advancing and refining these linguistic justifications by introducing, for example, the concept of polysemy to account for certain kinds of problematic formulations. In addition, they are probably the first commentators in the history of Jewish Bible exegesis to cite the rabbinic dictum, “the Torah speaks in the language of man” to explain the presence of anthropomorphisms in Scripture. En décembre 2007, Jacqueline Hamesse a fêté son 65ème anniversaire, puis a accédé à l’éméritat en 2008. Présentation d'une nouvelle traduction de la Bible publiée chez Bayard, sous la direction de Frédéric Boyer, Jean-Pierre Prévost et Marc Sevin, et réalisée conjointement par vingt écrivains et vingt-sept exégètes. Ecrite dans une langue résolument contemporaine, elle rend des couleurs aux mots de la Bible et cherche à honorer les différents styles qui y sont représentés. On regrette cependant que les droits de l'intertextualité biblique y soient souvent méconnus et que la traduction des synoptiques soit si disparate. Le travail d'exégèse (...) des textes est parfois poussé très loin. Cette nouvelle traduction vient combler un vide parmi la production francophone, à côté des bibles d'étude , qu'elle ne remplace pas. (shrink)

Cet article propose une périodisation de l’œuvre narrative de Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986). Deux notions métalittéraires signalent la première étape, celle d’un texte absolu et celle d’un texte gouverné par le hasard, liées pour l’une à la Cabbale, pour l’autre au Gnosticisme. L’étape suivante, objet principal de cette étude, est gouvernée par la notion de figure dans le sens biblique du terme. Borges présente cette notion dans « Le Miroir des énigmes », essai de 1940 où sont convoqués des textes (...) de Léon Bloy, Thomas de Quincey et Novalis. À travers ces influences, Borges ébauche une poétique figurative dont le caractère apocalyptique laisse l’œuvre ainsi produite dans l’indécision entre l’eschatologie et la scatologie. (shrink)

Religion was as much a concern for Frank Russell throughout his life as it was for younger brother Bertrand and their father before them. Each advocated its rational study untainted by Christian dogma. The chance discovery of an amusing film review by Frank Russell of the biblical epic The Dawn of the World (1921) became the catalyst for an exploration of this theme in the paper that follows, as well as providing the opportunity to explore the foundations of Frank’s agnosticism (...) and demonstrate his erudition and wit through the reprinting of his article “The Bible on the Film”. The purpose of this article is to talk about the development of cooperation with Russian teachers over the past ten years as part of assisting in the use of the Bible in order to include ethics and character-building lessons in the educational process in schools and higher educational institutions.

Contextual Bible Reading (CBR) and Intercultural Bible Reading (IBR) have enabled the cooperation between socially engaged scholars and marginalised groups to find new resources in biblical texts to interpret their contexts and fight against the surrounding violence. As the use of these two methods has not been the object of a comparative study based on concrete experiences, this article presents them through four cases of Christian communities in Colombia. This comparative study not only illustrates the differences between these two methods (...) of Bible reading, but also shows how they open new hermeneutic and liberation perspectives in the struggle for social justice and the search for reconciliation. The article depicts the CBR of the story of the Levite’s concubine (Jdg 19:1–30) by a group of women living in vulnerable conditions as well as the CBR of the parable of the father and his two sons (Lk 15:11–32) by a group of violence victims’ relatives. It also depicts the IBR of the story of the widow and the judge (Lk 18:1–8) by four groups of Caribbean readers as well as the IBR of the garden story (Gn 2:4b–25) by two Andean indigenous groups. Ordinary readers’ central role as interpreters of biblical texts let them recognise their own capabilities to transform their contexts in an emancipatory way and challenge biblical scholars and theologians. Even though CBR and IBR pursue different hermeneutical goals, they converge in giving a central role to the community as the subject of counter-hegemonic interpretations that open new horizons starting from reality and triggering liberation processes. Contribution: Beyond their differences and tensions, CBR and IBR are inclusive and dialogical methods intended for liberation that should be used to transcend the limits of dominant interpretations of biblical texts as well as the isolation of marginalised ordinary readers. The relationship between the Bible and science has been debated for decades. While science has emerged as a multifaceted discipline focused on the natural world, it has been viewed as a growing body of facts or knowledge ; and a path to understanding. As scientists test ideas, emerging disciplines such as palaeoanthropology, geology, archaeology, and evolutionary biology have attempted to prove Christian beliefs based on the Biblical account. Although the Bible was considered authoritative, the knowledge generated by science has been (...) so powerful and reliable in different things. While some people might use science to prove their own opinions, bringing an encroachment on the territory of religion, which theologians do not qualify as a scientific field. This paper has collected and analysed ideas from different scientists, philosophers, historians and theologians to examine the relationship between the Bible and Science, and the extent to which one is inductive to another. While an existence of a super intelligent designer was a common idea, confrontation focused on timeliness, creation story, divine action and miracles. Since religious people appeal to factual statements, while science is still developing and cannot prove the Bible or the existence of God with its lack of moral judgment, the Bible was qualified authoritative for faith and life. This study addresses the Bible as a coping tool in a sample of Swedish practising Christians living with cancer, gathered through a qualitative, in-depth interview study, on religious experiences and expressions that serve in the process of coping with a life situation changed by the disease. Through content analyses, and case studies combining tools from Pargament’s coping theory with, above all, role theory, it is shown that the Bible is a part of the coping process for approximately half of the (...) informants. Furthermore, the Bible plays very different roles in the coping process, even for one single person. In the analyzed material, two different ways of using the Bible in the coping process occurs: Biblical passages as bearer of meaning for the informants, and the actual reading as such of the Bible. The former with two different functions in the coping process: in the Biblical passages, see a direct appeal from God to the individual on a personal level and a specific character in a Bible passage serves as an object of identification for the informant. In the coping process, the Bible provides coping tools for the identified coping methods meditative reading, role taking, and interpretation of biblical passages. As such, it mainly serves within the framework of the preserving comprehensive coping method. It is also shown that there are changes in the use of the Bible in connection with the changed life situation, as a result of the disease. (shrink)
