Theory reduction: The case of the kinetic theory of gases.Soshichi Uchii - unknown
It is often said that the kinetic theory of gases is one of the best examples of the reduction of one theory into another; that is, the classical theory of thermodynamics [or to be more exact, a significant portion of it] is alleged to be reduced to the kinetic theory, which is based on the Newtonian mechanics and the atomistic view of the matter. But what is the nature of this alleged "reduction"? If you want to know the right answer (...)

Yoshikatsu Sugiura's Contribution to the Development of Quantum Physics in Japan.Michiyo Nakane - 2019 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 42 (4):338-356.
Previous research in the history of physics has led us to believe that Yoshio Nishina (1890–1951) virtually single‐handedly imported quantum physics into Japan. However, there are first‐hand accounts that Yoshikatsu Sugiura (1895–1960) also played an important role. Sugiura made his name in quantum chemistry with his contribution to the Heitler‐London theory of the chemical bond. Yet, historians of physics have paid scant attention to him. This paper brings forward information on Sugiura from his letters, his scientific papers, and his own (...)

Cannot something similar be said of interreligious dialogue? All our planning and study are best put to use when they suddenly become (...)

Passive Synthesis und Intersubjektivität bei Edmund Husserl.Ichiro Yamaguchi - 1982 - Hingham, MA: Springer.

  41. Toward an interpretation of dynamic neural activity in terms of chaotic dynamical systems.Ichiro Tsuda - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (5):793-810.
Using the concepts of chaotic dynamical systems, we present an interpretation of dynamic neural activity found in cortical and subcortical areas. The discovery of chaotic itinerancy in high-dimensional dynamical systems with and without a noise term has motivated a new interpretation of this dynamic neural activity, cast in terms of the high-dimensional transitory dynamics among “exotic” attractors. This interpretation is quite different from the conventional one, cast in terms of simple behavior on low-dimensional attractors. Skarda and Freeman (1987) presented evidence (...)

  43. Chaotic itinerancy as a dynamical basis of hermeneutics in brain and mind.Ichiro Tsuda - 1991 - World Futures 32 (2):167-184.
We propose a new dynamical mechanism for information processing in mind and brain. We emphasize that a hermeneutic process is one of the key processes manifesting the functions of the brain and that it can be formulated as an itinerant motion in ultrahigh dimensional dynamical systems, which may give a new realm of the dynamic information processing. Our discussions are based on the notion of chaotic information processing and the observations of biological chaos.

Integrating Law and Social Epidemiology.Scott Burns, Ichiro Kawachi & Austin Sarat - 2002 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 30 (4):510-521.
Social epidemiology has made a powerful case that health determined not just by individual-level factors such as our genetic make-up, access to medical services, or lifestyle choices, but also by social conditions, including the economy, law, and culture. Indeed, at the level of populations, evidence suggests that these “structural” factors are thepredominantinfluences on health. Legal scholars in public health, including those in the health and human rights movement, have contended that human rights, laws, and legal practices are powerfully linked to (...)

Understanding user sensemaking in fairness and transparency in algorithms: algorithmic sensemaking in over-the-top platform.Donghee Shin, Joon Soo Lim, Norita Ahmad & Mohammed Ibahrine - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-14.
A number of artificial intelligence systems have been proposed to assist users in identifying the issues of algorithmic fairness and transparency. These AI systems use diverse bias detection methods from various perspectives, including exploratory cues, interpretable tools, and revealing algorithms. This study explains the design of AI systems by probing how users make sense of fairness and transparency as they are hypothetical in nature, with no specific ways for evaluation. Focusing on individual perceptions of fairness and transparency, this study examines (...)
