Just say “no”: Can dentists refuse care on the basis of finances? A survey using an ethical vignette in an Iranian Dental School.Ali Kazemian, Mahsa Fayyazi & Shahrzad Shafiee - 2020 - BMC Medical Ethics 21 (1):1-4.
Background Decision making when patients ask a dentist for fee reduction is a real ethical dilemma at dental settings. The aim of this study was to evaluate how dental students and tutors think about their position for, or against fee reduction at dental offices. Method It was a questionnaire-based survey, which examined the ethical attitudes of students and tutors of an Iranian Dental School. The questionnaire included a vignette about an ethical dilemma at a dental office. Different ethical approaches, i.e. (...)

    Theorizing the Politics of ‘Islamic Feminism’.Shahrzad Mojab - 2001 - Feminist Review 69 (1):124-146.
This article examines developments in ‘Islamic feminism’, and offers a critique of feminist theories, which construct it as an authentic and indigenous emancipatory alternative to secular feminisms. Focusing on Iranian theocracy, I argue that the Islamization of gender relations has created an oppressive patriarchy that cannot be replaced through legal reforms. While many women in Iran resist this religious and patriarchal regime, and an increasing number of Iranian intellectuals and activists, including Islamists, call for the separation of state and religion, (...)

Work values and job satisfaction: A qualitative study of Iranian nurses.Ali Ravari, Shahrzad Bazargan-Hejazi, Abbas Ebadi, Tayebeh Mirzaei & Khodayar Oshvandi - 2013 - Nursing Ethics 20 (4):448-458.
This study aimed to describe the effect of nursing profession work-related values on job satisfaction among a sample of Iranian nurses. We used in-depth interviews with 30 nurses who worked in university-affiliated and public hospitals in Tehran, Iran. The results of thematic analysis of interviews are reported in four themes to present the participants’ articulations in linking their work-related values to job satisfaction. The themes consist of values that “encourage tolerance,” “enhance inner harmony,” “reflect traditional commitment,” “enhance unity,” and are (...)

Objective Information in the Empiricist View of von Weizsäcker.Iman Khatam & Afshin Shafiee - 2014 - Foundations of Science 19 (3):241-255.
We analyze von Weizsäcker’s view regarding the concept of information in physics. In his view, information arises from the reduction of properties of a physical object to their logical descriptive propositions. The smallest element of a lattice of propositions is an atom of information which is considered as the essence of every physical identity including position space. von Weizsäcker calls this element, “ur”. Moreover, Biological evolution is described in terms of enhancement of the variety of forms. Form could be also (...)

    Double-Slit Interference Pattern for a Macroscopic Quantum System.Hamid Reza Naeij & Afshin Shafiee - 2016 - Foundations of Physics 46 (12):1634-1648.
In this study, we solve analytically the Schrödinger equation for a macroscopic quantum oscillator as a central system coupled to two environmental micro-oscillating particles. Then, the double-slit interference patterns are investigated in two limiting cases, considering the limits of uncertainty in the position probability distribution. Moreover, we analyze the interference patterns based on a recent proposal called stochastic electrodynamics with spin. Our results show that when the quantum character of the macro-system is decreased, the diffraction pattern becomes more similar to (...)

Impediments to the formation of intensive care nurses' professional identify.Somayeh Mousazadeh, Shahrzad Yektatalab, Marzieh Momennasab & Soroor Parvizy - 2019 - Nursing Ethics 26 (6):1873-1885.
Background: Nurses face challenges regarding professional identify. Being unaware of these challenges and not owning positive professional identify leads to a lack of self-confidence. Thus, nurses face problems in interpersonal communication and lose their attachment to their profession. Few studies have engaged with impediments to forming positive professional identity in relation to intensive care nurses. Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impediments to forming positive professional identity in nurses working in intensive care unit. Research design: In (...)

“It from Bit” and Quantum Mechanics.Ali Barzegar, Afshin Shafiee & Mostafa Taqavi - 2020 - Foundations of Science 25 (2):375-384.
John Archibald Wheeler is one of the staunchest advocates of the idea that information is more fundamental than anything else in physics. In this paper, we examine the status of this idea summarized in Wheeler’s slogan ‘it from bit’ in the context of Bohmian Mechanics and spontaneous collapse models. We will argue that any question about the status of ‘it from bit’ crucially depends on the particular interpretation of these theories one favors.

Zeilinger on Information and Reality.Ali Barzegar, Mostafa Taqavi & Afshin Shafiee - 2020 - Foundations of Science 26 (4):1007-1019.
According to Zeilinger’s information interpretation of quantum mechanics ‘the distinction between reality and our knowledge of reality, between reality and information, cannot be made. They are in a deep sense indistinguishable’. This is what we call Zeilinger’s thesis. This thesis has been criticized as a lapse into ‘informational immaterialism’ and amounting to nothing more than a tautology. However, we will argue that this criticism is based on a pre-Kantian view of reality, namely metaphysical realism which could be questioned on the (...)

    Postponing the Past: An Operational Analysis of Delayed-Choice Experiments. [REVIEW]M. Bahrami & A. Shafiee - 2009 - Foundations of Physics 40 (1):55-92.
The prominent characteristic of a delayed-choice effect is to make the choice between complementary types of phenomena after the relevant interaction between the system and measuring instrument has already come to an end. In this paper, we first represent a detailed comparative analysis of some early delayed-choice propositions and also most of the experimentally performed delayed-choice proposals in a coherent and unified quantum mechanical formulation. Taking into the account the represented quantum mechanical descriptions and also the rules of probability theory, (...)

Patients’ perception of dignity in Iranian general hospital settings.Fahimeh Alsadat Hosseini, Marzieh Momennasab, Shahrzad Yektatalab & Armin Zareiyan - 2019 - Nursing Ethics 26 (6):1777-1790.
Background: Dignified care is one of the main objectives of holistic care. Furthermore, paying attention to dignity as one of the fundamental rights of patients is extremely important. However, in many cases, the dignity of hospitalized patients is not considered. Dignity is an abstract concept, and comprehensive studies of the dignity of Iranian patients hospitalized in general hospital settings are limited. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the concept of dignity from the perspective of patients hospitalized in (...)

A Practice-Inspired Mindset for Researching the Psychophysiological and Medical Health Effects of Recreational Dance (Dance Sport).Julia F. Christensen, Meghedi Vartanian, Luisa Sancho-Escanero, Shahrzad Khorsandi, S. H. N. Yazdi, Fahimeh Farahi, Khatereh Borhani & Antoni Gomila - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11:588948.
“Dance” has been associated with many psychophysiological and medical health effects. However, varying definitions of what constitute “dance” have led to a rather heterogenous body of evidence about such potential effects, leaving the picture piecemeal at best. It remains unclear what exact parameters may be driving positive effects. We believe that this heterogeneity of evidence is partly due to a lack of a clear definition of dance for such empirical purposes. A differentiation is needed between (a) the effects on the (...)

Relationship Between Declarations of Conflict of Interests and Reporting Positive Outcomes in Iranian Dental Journals.Maryam Alsadat Hashemipour, Sepehr Pourmonajemzadeh, Shahrzad Zoghitavana & Nader Navabi - 2019 - Science and Engineering Ethics 25 (4):1057-1067.
Conflict of interests is a situation when someone is in need of other people’s trust on one the hand and has personal or general interests on the other hand, resulting in conflict with the given responsibility. In this research work, an attempt was made to find the relation between declarations of conflict of interests and reporting positive outcomes in the dental journals in Iran. In this analytical/cross-sectional study, first Health and Biomedical Information was searched and all the Persian and English (...)

Operating room nurses’ perception of professional values.Camellia Torabizadeh, Fatemeh Darari & Shahrzad Yektatalab - 2019 - Nursing Ethics 26 (6):1765-1776.
Background and significance of research: Nurses’ awareness of professional values and how those values affect their behaviors is an integral part of nursing care. There is a large body of research on nursing professional values, however, a careful survey of the available literature did not yield any studies investigating the status of professional values in operating rooms. Objective: This study aims to investigate the perception of operating room nurses of university hospitals toward professional values. Research plan: In this cross-sectional study, (...)

The Basis for an Understanding of Matter and Mind.Thomas Görnitz - 2014 - Foundations of Science 19 (3):257-262.
In this commentary to Khatam and Shafiee (2013), we outline the results which are obtained three decades after Weizsäcker’s “Aufbau der Physik” (1985). It is essential to go beyond the “urs” to a yet more abstract conception. With the protyposis, abstract quantum bits without any special meaning, the understanding of matter becomes new basis. As a result, also a scientific understanding of mind will be obtained.
