Proclus, successor of the School of Athens in the fifth century AD, is one of the last great voices of a pagan polytheistic world in crisis in the face of the gradual rise of Christianity. His writing bears witness not only to one of the most influential metaphysical representations for the constitution of the idea of a philosophical "system" based on a complex "language game" based on the conceptual sphere of "order" and "unity", but also of an attempt to reconcile (...) rhetorics with philosophy. In the three chapters in which the book is structured (style, system, unity), then, a conscious intention is evident in Proclus, to adapt the content of his systematic metaphysics to literary form. Hence there is a consistency traced in Proclus' stylistic choices, with the aesthetic norms of a rhetorical canon, probably established in the cycle of readings of the Neoplatonic school. The way in which expressive "art" is subordinated in Proclus to philosophy is one of the most emblematic examples of a development in late antiquity, that of the enkuklios paideia - the union of all the arts necessary for the formation of man - that would later constitute in the Latin world the cycle of liberal arts. En el presente trabajo proponemos analizar la lectura procleana del pasaje de _Leyes _X 896a y ss. –donde Platón parece hacer descansar todos los actos de los cuerpos en una causalidad de orden divino y psicológico– como una respuesta a lo antes dicho por Plutarco al respecto. El queroneata sostiene que, según Platón, el mal es causado por un alma mala, que en eterna lucha con el alma buena, oficia de causa mecánica y de principio rector del cosmos (_De Iside (...) et Osiride _370b-371a; _De animae procreatione in Plato Timaeo _1014a-f). A nuestro criterio, es contra lo anterior que se centra el esfuerzo procleano para señalar que el mal no existe en su pureza, ni en las entidades superiores (como lo es el alma del mundo o Alma-hipóstasis) aunque sí como una desviación que se da en las almas humanas individuales y que opera como una entidad parasitaria (_De malorum subsistentia _I, 20-23). Aspiramos a esgrimir argumentos que muestren en qué sentido Proclo defiende el principio Uno-Bien, que no puede tener contrarios, y la existencia del mal en las entidades inferiores sin negar la contingencia ni culpar al cosmos del mal. One of the main purposes of the Expositio in Elementationem theologicam written by Berthold of Moosburg is to show that there is a substantial agreement between Proclus’ thought and that of Paul’s disciple, “Dionysius the Areopagite”. Strongly linked to this view, is the use Berthold does of a fundamental Augustinian distinction, namely the distinction between the ordo providentiae naturalis and the ordo providentiae voluntariae. Berthold understands that these do not oppose each other; in fact, essentially, they agree. The relation between (...) the thought of Proclus and that of Dionysius can be understood on the base of that distinction. In his Elementatio theologica, Proclus writes from the point of view of the ordo providentiae naturalis, whereas Dionysius writes from the point of view of the ordo providentiae voluntariae. That is the reason why a dialogue can be built between Proclus and Dionysius. In order to do this, regarding Proclus’ metaphysical polytheism, Berthold employs as a mediator the Eriugenian teaching about the causae primordiales. This can be proved by paying attention to the way Berthold introduces his Eriugenian quotes, always as a Christian consideration of things according to the ordo providentiae naturalis, which, at the same time, is to be read as a Christian and philosophical interpretation of Dionysius’ thought. The author shows how Proclo is a precursor of 'Mathesis universalis' concept, without admiting the aporetic method of mathematics which is in Plato, Aristotle and Euclides thought. Today, his paradigm is rejected but it is a decisive factor to understand the sources of western thought. This study deals with the works of Brisson, Cleary, Trudeau, Beierwaltes and Schmitz.

In this paper I compare Alexander of Aphrodisias’ and Proclus’ conceptions of dialectic by discussing a passage from Alexander’s commentary on Aristotle’s Topics and texts from Proclus’ Platonic Theology and commentary on Plato’s Parmenides. I show how Alexander takes up Aristotle’s view of dialectic as an argumentative technique that has no specific object but can be put in the service of philosophy e. g. to establish first principles. In a key passage, Alexander quotes some lines from the Parmenides to emphasize (...) that this was also Plato’s view on dialectic. By contrast, Proclus uses the Parmenides as a crucial source for his conception of dialectic as the crowning glory of philosophy, and fiercely criticizes such interpretations of the Parmenides as that of Alexander, which reduce it to the illustration of a logical method. I argue that the difference in their conceptions of dialectic lies in Alexander’s positive and Proclus’ negative view on doxa and on its role in knowledge. (shrink)

El Tomus es un documento de reconocido valor doctrinal. La respuesta del Patriarca se ubica después de la Fórmula de Unión y antes del concilio de Calcedonia. En este trabajo se explora su posible influencia en la decisión que siguió. Para esto, compara su contenido con algunos documentos precedentes y con el concilio del año 451. Asimismo, examina el vocabulario técnico que emplea, buscando su grado de coincidencia con los significados anteriores y posteriores de los mismos términos. Luego confronta sus (...) afirmaciones cristológicas con las que se encuentra en los mismos documentos antes mencionados. Finalmente, resume las consecuencias salvíficas que Proclo destaca con motivo de la economía de la encarnación. (shrink)

El objeto de este estudio es el análisis del papel y la función del fr. 241 Bernabé en la exégesis del demiurgo que aparece en el libro II del Comentario al Timeo de Proclo. Este análisis se centra en el primero de los tres demiurgo-Zeus que caracterizan el panteón de este autor, el contenido en la tríada intelectiva Cronos-Rea-Zeus, y plantea la cuestión de por qué opta por el uso de la teología órfica en lugar de la caldaica. Para (...) responder a esta pregunta, el estudio se divide en tres partes: a) el análisis de la estructura y el contenido del fr. 241 Bernabé; b) el vínculo que establece el Comentario al Timeo entre Orfeo, Pitágoras y Platón; y c) la definición que este tratado ofrece el demiurgo y su adaptación a la teología órfica. La conclusión a la que se pretende llegar es que, en este caso concreto, el uso del orfismo viene dado por la adecuación de la segunda creación al concepto de demiurgo defendido por Proclo. (shrink)

Resumen En la 5ª y 6ª disertación del Comentario a la República de Platón Proclo se centra en rescatar tanto a los "forjadores de mitos", Homero y Hesíodo, como a sus críticos, Sócrates y Platón (República III y X). En este trabajo analizaremos la correspondencia que Proclo establece entre los cuatro grados del discurso poético -poesía inspirada, científica, de reproducción y de apariencias- con un género de vida determinado. Ahora bien, las características que Proclo asigna a los (...) mitos no se aplican a todos llos mitos, ya que es preciso diferenciar dos tipos: los educativos y los divinamente inspirados, que se corresponden con dos tipos de oyentes: los que conciernen a los jóvenes y los que se dirigen a aquellos que son capaces de elevar su alma a través de todas las clases divinas. Los poetas y Platón imparten la misma enseñanza sobre las mismas cosas.In the 5th and 6th essays of Commentary on Plato's Republic, Proclus focuses on rescuing both "myth-makers", Homer and Hesiod, as well as their critics, Socrates and Plato (Republic III and X). In this paper we analyze the relationship that Proclus states between the four grades of poetic discourse -inspired poetry, scientific, of reproduction and of appearances-, and a certain way of life. The features Proclus assigns to the myths do not apply to all of them, as it is necessary to distinguish between two types of myths: the educational ones and the divinely inspired, which correspond to two types of listeners: those concerning the young people, and those whose target are the ones who are able to raise their soul through all divine grades. Analysis of the concept of dialectics in Proclus, specially in Commentary on Parmenides II, V and VII. It considers three aspects: 1) Dialectics as method. 2) Dialectics as a particular perspective of universe. 3rd) Dialectics as order of negations.

Este trabalho tem o objetivo de apresentar o sistema lógico-filosófico de Proclo, de maneira a tornar perceptível o caráter triádico do seu sistema. Para tanto, é utilizada, como obra principal, Os Elementos de Teologia. Deste modo, o trabalho analisa as hipóstases que compõe a realidade, a saber: divina, inteligível e psíquica. Ademais, são mostradas as principais características de cada hipóstase, de maneira que, ao fim, se pode concluir que os elementos intermediários têm papel fundamental no sistema de Proclo.

El artículo cuestiona la oposición entre platonismo y aristotelismo que se discute en el Renacimiento. Específicamente examina los argumentos de Ficino sobre el movimiento del cielo. Estos han dado lugar a considerar su pensamiento como incoherente ya que incorpora elementos aristotélicos en un marco platónico. Si bien estas consideraciones han sido cuestionadas, se profundiza en ello y se muestra que la incorporación de nociones aristotélicas es una característica de la tradición platónica renacentista.

En este artículo, nos proponemos considerar el modo en el cual el alma individual es capaz de recorrer el camino al que Proclo invita según su ciencia teológica sobre la base de los diálogos de Platón y en polémica con la tradición que integra, tomando por caso la figura de Plotino. Para ello, analizaremos, en primer lugar, el carácter múltiple y uno del alma entendida en términos generales al interior de su esquema metafísico según algunos pasajes del capítulo 6 (...) del libro III de la Teología Platónica y algunas proposiciones pertinentes de los Elementos de Teología; en segundo lugar, el caso de la tripartición del alma individual que Proclo defiende en la Disertación VII del Comentario a la República; y, finalmente, intentaremos vincular esta concepción unimúltiple del alma con la afirmación de que ella posee la capacidad de alcanzar la hénosis. The article analizes the several times of Proclus‘s reception by Nicholas of Cusa’s thought. The direct reading of Proclus can be established because Expositio in Parmenidem Platonis –Cod.Cus. 186– and Elementatio theological –Cod.Cus.195– (Moerbeke’s translation) and De theologia Platonis Libri VI –Cod.Cus.185– (Petrus Balbus’s translation) are in his Library in Bernkastel-Kues with his marginalia. The assimilation of doctrines can be considered assuming that the implicits and explicits references to Plato’s Diadochus, especially in the last works.

In this paper the author discusses the complex question of whether Proclus regards theology as a demonstrative science along the lines of Euclidean geometry, or as a different kind of science that follows the dialectical model of Plato's Parmenides. This question is focused by considering the applicability to the Elements of Theology of the Euclidean model of science, while examining the limitations of this hermeneutical approach.

This contribution resumes the main conclusions of a common work of philosophical comparatism between the Neoplatonism of Plotinus and Proclus, which is based on the examination of their respective reception of the traditional metaphysical use of anciant myths. This article consists in the examination of two important “definitions” of myth collected in the Enneads of Plotinus and Proclus’ Commentary on the Republic. On the basis of these analyses, it is possible to assert that, for Plotinus as for Proclus, the muthos (...) appears as being a simple particular case of logos, and even that the logos itself is only a particular case of muthos. If we would have to differentiate Proclean thought in relation to Plotinian thought, perhaps the shortest way would be to understand the hyerarchic structure used by them to define the procession and the conversion from the One to the multiple. Although the ground for both thinkers is Plato’s philosophy, the concern to sistematize in an “organic” way all the levels of participation in the divine hennads leads Proclus to postulate a refined vertical system in which every reality is thought as (...) a monad and, as such, one different from the others. The aim of this work consists in understanding the Proclean structure and its relation with thought, understood as a transfiguration in which reality, more than a manifestation of unity, is an expression of the continuous play between the One and the multiple. In his reflection on the nature of evil, the Neoplatonic philosopher Proclus affirms that evil itself is “also beyond the abso­lute non-being”. With this assumption, he intends to reinforce the thesis of the non-existence of absolute evil, conceived as totally separate from good, and contrasted with the collat­eral and parasitic existence of evil mixed with good. He thus maintains a distinction between absolute evil and relative evil, conceived with reference to the distinction between absolute non-being and relative non-being. In Proclus, (...) the thesis of the non-existence of absolute evil is presented as a necessary consequence of the non-dualist theory of evil in the sphere of a protology that identifies the first Principle of all things in the primary Good, and which aims to reconcile the absolute primacy of the latter with the presence of evil in some orders of reality.
