Scientific realism is the view that one can be justified in believing, of some theory about unobservable entities, that the entities it posits are real and accurately described by the theory, in the same sense as one can be justified in believing that the theory’s empirical predictions are accurate, and that so to believe is what it means for a scientist to “accept” that theory, because the goal of science is to describe reality, even its unobservable features. The first part (...) is an epistemic claim, whereas the second concerns the rational reconstruction of scientific practice. Together they suggest that evidence justifying scientific acceptance of a theory justifies belief that the unobservable entities it posits are real and as the theory purports them to be. Anti-realism denies ; it holds that claims about unobservables are either unjustified or justified in a different sense from predictions of observations. It also denies ; it maintains that in her scientific work, as rationally reconstructed, a scientist who accepts a claim about unobservables believes that it yields accurate predictions of observables, not that it describes unobservables. Knowledge closure is the claim that, if an agent S knows P, recognizes that P implies Q, and believes Q because it is implied by P, then S knows Q. Closure is a pivotal epistemological principle that is widely endorsed by contemporary epistemologists. Against Knowledge Closure is the first book-length treatment of the issue and the most sustained argument for closure failure to date. Unlike most prior arguments for closure failure, Marc Alspector-Kelly's critique of closure does not presuppose any (...) particular epistemological theory; his argument is, instead, intuitively compelling and applicable to a wide variety of epistemological views. His discussion ranges over much of the epistemological landscape, including skepticism, warrant, transmission and transmission failure, fallibilism, sensitivity, safety, evidentialism, reliabilism, contextualism, entitlement, circularity and bootstrapping, justification, and justification closure. The 483 pieces that comprise the work come complete with five indexes. One is a valuable index of correspondents including, for each one, biographical information; there are indexes of names of towns cited in the correspondence, of proper names, of works cited, and of things. The notes systematically establish the ties between different works and point out all the references to works alluded to.

How a human observer perceives duration depends on the amount of events taking place during the timed interval, but also on psychological dimensions, such as emotional-wellbeing, mindfulness, impulsivity, and rumination. Here we aimed at exploring these influences on duration estimation and passage of time judgments. One hundred and seventeen healthy individuals filled out mindfulness (FFMQ), impulsivity (BIS-11), rumination (RRS), and depression (BDI-sf) questionnaires. Participants also conducted verbal estimation and production tasks in the multiple seconds range. During these timing tasks, subjects (...) were asked to read digits aloud that were presented on a computer screen. Each condition of the timing tasks differed in terms of the interval between the presentation of the digits, i.e., either short (4-s) or long (16-s). Our findings suggest that long empty intervals (16-s) are associated with a relative underestimation of duration, and to a feeling that the time passes slowly, a seemingly paradoxical result. Also, regarding more mindful individuals, such a dissociation between duration estimation and passage of time judgments was found, but only when empty intervals were short (4-s). Relatively speaking, more mindful subjects showed an increased overestimation of durations, but felt that time passed more quickly. These results provide further evidence for the dissociation between duration estimation and the feeling of the passage of time. We discuss these results in terms of an alerting effect when empty intervals are short and events are more numerous, which could mediate the effect of dispositional mindfulness. (shrink)

In this thesis, I elaborate and defend Donald Davidson's account of knowing one's own mental states that exhibit first-person authority. To that end, I place Davidson's account among others in the philosophical landscape concerning self-knowledge. Next, I examine his response to philosophical challenges that arise from mental content externalism and self-deception. Finally, I draw some insights froms Davidson's account to the broader aims of epsitemology.

Ethics education in the professions has become close to compulsory with continuing education following suit. What is the de facto as opposed to the de jure function of an ethics education program? Have they increased compliance with laws and codes of conduct? Is that the goal? What would an ethics education program look like that was not primarily concerned with compliance with relevant laws or professional codes and not merely an exercise in good public relations? I argue that, ultimately, ethics (...) education is about happiness… not happiness as we generally think of it today, but in the Aristotelian sense of “fulfillment” and the collateral good that is generated for clients and the profession. As a result of this point of view I argue that ethics is not a subject in the normal sense of the term but a meta-subject which implies that teaching ethics as a class or stand alone module in a law, policy or practice management course is usually ineffective. Another implication is that the richest source for moral reflection within a profession are case studies generated by students in clinical assignments, despite the inherent risks associated with making these cases prominent. In order to be able to provide informed, effective and responsive mental health care and to do so in an evidence‐based, collaborative and recovery‐focused way with those who use mental health services, there is a recognition of the need for mental health professionals to possess sophisticated critical thinking capabilities. This article will therefore propose that such capabilities can be productively situated within the context of the work of the French philosopher Michel Foucault, one of the most challenging, innovative and influential (...) thinkers of the 20th century. However, rather than focusing exclusively upon the content of Foucault's work, it will be suggested that it is possible to discern a general methodological approach across that work, a methodological approach that he refers to as “the history of the present.” In doing so, Foucault's history of the present can be understood as a productive, albeit provisional, framework in which to orientate the purpose and process of critical thinking for mental health professionals by emphasizing the need to both historicize and politicize the theoretical perspectives and therapeutic practices that characterize contemporary mental health care. We present a model of rational behavior by which we characterize business ethical dilemmas as trade-offs between processes and consequences. As an illustration, we formulate the oil industry's business ethical dilemma as a trade-off between a socially detrimental process (emitting greenhouse gases, hence inducing a risk of climate change) and a self-interested consequence (profits). The proposed framework allows us to specify two types of strategies, differing by whether priority is given to the consequences or to the processes. We analyze and (...) illustrate these strategies at both the behavioral and the discursive levels. In particular, communication strategies raise questions about good faith in business argumentation, in the sense that business discourse may or may not be consistent with actual assumptions and/or actual behaviors. This paper argues that economic rationality and ethical behavior cannot be reduced one to the other, thus casting doubt on the validity of assertions such as ‘profit is ethical’ or ‘ethics pays’. In order to express ethical dilemmas in a way which opposes economic interest with ethical concerns, we propose a model of rational behavior that combines these two irreducible dimensions in an open but not arbitrary manner. Behaviors that are neither ethical nor profitable are considered irrational (non‐arbitrariness). However, behaviors (...) that are profitable but unethical, and behaviors that are ethical but not profitable, are all treated as rational (openness). Combining ethical concerns with economic interest, ethical business is in turn seen as an optimal form of rationality between venality and sacrifice. Because everyone prefers to communicate that they act ethically, ethical business remains ambiguous until some economic interest is actually sacrificed. We argue, however, that ethical business has an interest in demonstrating its consistency between communication and behavior by a transparent attitude. On the other hand, venal behaviors must remain confidential to hide the corresponding lack of consistency. This discursive approach based on transparency and confidentiality helps to further distinguish between ethical and unethical business behaviors. (shrink)

The relationship between media, nationalism and identity is increasingly problematic, even in the most politically stable countries. In Canada, media policy has been an integral part of political strategies for preserving the coherence of the Canadian state, with respect to external pressures towards North American continental integration, and internal pressures towards fragmentation and, most recently, disintegration. The alternative project of political indepéndence for Quebec, which nearly achieved a majority in a referendum held in October 1995, represents a threat to the (...) Canadian state that media policy has sought to contain. But media practices reflect the real tensions in Canadian society and can not be held to account for the more or less failed agendas of politicians. The article explores some aspects of the relationship between media and the complexities of national identity in the framework of a political culture where different visions of nationhood must inevitably coexist. Les écrits publiés de Gabriel Tarde (1843-1902) ont laissé peu de place à la découverte d’inédits. Élu en 1901 au Collège de France à la chaire de philosophie moderne, Gabriel Tarde a réalisé sa dernière année complète de cours durant l’année 1902-1903. Les notes relatives au cours de philosophie pénale n’ont jamais été publiées. L’ensemble présente un intérêt pour la connaissance de l’œuvre et de la pensée de Tarde. Il s’agit en effet du dernier cours que Tarde donna sur le (...) thème de la science du crime, et l’on peut donc considérer ces notes comme le dernier état de sa pensée sur cette question. Ce contexte rend d’autant plus intéressant le contenu de cette première leçon de « criminalistique ». Quel sens Tarde donne-t-il à ce mot? Quel est le positionnement de cette science? Sa méthode? Comment l’inclut-il dans son œuvre et quel est son programme? Cuando se trata de música, la palabra «percepción» debe ser puesta entre paréntesis fenomenológicos: no puede tratarse ni de una sucesión de sonidos en la que cada uno de ellos estaría presente, ni de una especie de integral de dicha sucesión (según un modelo matemático), sino, más bien, una vez puesta en suspenso la realidad material del sonido, de una «percepción» a través de la phantasia (que no es imaginación sino puesta en imagen) de aquella extraña «realidad» (Sachlichkeit) inmaterial que (...) es la música en tanto fenómeno de lenguaje ―la cual dice algo distinto de sí misma en tanto puramente sonora al temporalizar el sentido (o los sentidos) en una presencia haciéndose y sin presente asignable, más allá de los límites de tal o cual lengua musical instituida. En ese sentido, el compositor, si es verdaderamente creativo, busca decir algo, mientras que el espectador entiende la música a través de una mímesis activa, no especular y desde dentro, y, finalmente, el intérprete es el mediador que, a través de su propia mímesis, del mismo tipo, reinterpreta la música al fundir su propio cuerpo viviente y su afectividad ―y así sobrepasa tanto la «mecánica» de su cuerpo físico como las afectaciones virtuosas de su narcisismo. En consecuencia, la música no tiene nada que ver con la producción y la recepción físicas y psíquicas de señales. (shrink)

El presente texto se interroga con respecto a la posibilidad de que el pensamiento heideggeriano del Ereignis pueda ir más allá de la «tautología simbólica» entendida como la identificación entre ser y pensar, dado que, si bien el Ereignis garantiza la mismidad y unidad de dicha co-implicación, apela a su vez a algo que se reserva en dicho don. A tal fin, se sirve de la formulación, según la cual el pensar consistiría en un encaminamiento del «habla» (Sprache) en tanto (...) el eco del «dicho» (Sage), el cual en su silenciamiento deja que tenga lugar el pronunciamiento de la palabra. Dicha articulación, no obstante, corre el riesgo de que el Ereignis cumpla un rol meramente «formal» debido a que su retraimiento en tanto Enteignis sólo sería la condición de posibilidad para la temporalización y espacialización de la morada del habla, con lo cual sólo a través del decir podría desplegarse un mundo. Así, más allá de Heidegger, se busca ahondar en dicha dimensión de retraimiento del Enteignis, a partir de la cual el habla se hace eco no de una nada, sino, más bien, de una multiplicidad originaria de Wesen salvajes en tanto la proto-temporalización de fenómenos de mundo fuera del lenguaje. El presente texto expone, en primer lugar, la tautología simbólica que habita la fenomenología del lenguaje en Husserl, en la medida en que, a pesar del reconocimiento de una dotación de sentido ontológico preexistente a la cual el sentido de la expresión debe adaptarse, en realidad la expresión cumple la función de reflejar dicho sentido noemático en una imagen (Abbild) tal y como es, a fin de poder ser figurado (Einbildung) en tanto concepto. Dicha reduplicación especular (Wiederspiegelung), a partir de (...) la cual lo antepredicativo sería reflejo fiel de lo predicativo, se corresponde con un «nominalismo fenomenológico», en tanto implica una pérdida de la densidad propiamente fenomenológica del lenguaje. En segundo lugar, sostiene que la poiética, es decir, la creación artística, es aquello que devela la dimensión de fenomenalidad del lenguaje mismo, en la medida en que hace uso de la «imaginación» (Einbildungskraft) en el sentido de una Einbildung haciéndose, la cual implica tanto una distorsión inherente a su efectuación, como una figuración que opera sin concepto, con lo cual en ella se fenomenalizan Wesen más primitivos o más salvajes que los propios a los eide lógicamente instituidos por el lenguaje. Se abordan aquí algunas dificultades de la ‘psiquiatría fenomenológica’ directamente en relación con la aprehensión de las patologías ‘psíquicas’ o ‘mentales’ dentro de un modelo de ‘normalidad’ derivado de la psicología del siglo XIX de inspiración filosófica. Desde el concepto de ‘sospecha’ freudiano, los estudios de las patologías mentales de Binswanger, los análisis de algunos problemas nucleares sobre la síntesis pasiva husserliana, Richir pretende explorar una nueva ‘vía’, más allá de los límites de la psiquiatría fenomenológica, que incluya, de manera (...) cuasi estructural, las formas de temporalización y espacialización que funcionan en las ‘flexiones’ patológicas del Dasein. En otras palabras, trata de relacionar sistemáticamente la temporalización/espacialización husserliana, entendida como síntesis pasiva, con la filosofía de la afectividad, de la Befindlichkeit heideggeriana, que pone en juego la dimensión de una pasividad originaria del Dasein, entendida bajo el signo de facticidad. Para ello, Richir comenta detallada y magistralmente el conocidísimo §29 de Ser y Tiempo, con el objetivo no solo de captar la matriz transcendental de la división interna de la Stimmung y de la Verstimmung sino, también, mostrar justamente cómo puede logarse, por un lado, cierta articulación de lo que Husserl denomina como síntesis pasiva de la temporalización con la Stimmung y la Befindlichkeit heideggerianas y, por el otro, una posible vía de articulación entre Stimmungen normales y V erstimmungen patológicas, esto es, de una división interna a la Stimmung que haga posible al menos la versión patológica en la Verstimmung. McKeon was a pragmatist who developed a heuristic that outlined the philosophical roots behind the tensions created by the paradox of pluralism. This heuristic was based on the four main schools of ancient Greek philosophy and allowed McKeon to map out how different philosophical perspectives create different understandings of foundational concepts such as freedom, history and motion. This paper applies that heuristic to the concept of communication and demonstrates how different philosophical approaches create tension over the definition of communication. Scholars (...) can use this application to both better approach McKeon’s pragmatism as well as gain insight into the philosophical foundations of our own perspectives of communication. (shrink)

Encontramos en este texto las consideraciones arquitectónicas de algunas cuestiones metafísi- cas en torno a la indisociabilidad entre tiempo- espacio-fenómeno y el tratamiento del mundo como horizonte, como Lichtung y fenómeno. Desde algunos pasajes de Welt und Endlichkeit de Eugen Fink, en su relación con Kant y Heidegger, Richir cuestiona justamente por el carácter de la Lichtung, por su posibilidad como ilusión transcendental y la necesidad de identificarla, como lo señala claramente Fink, con el mundo mismo. Habrán, entonces, en el (...) mundo, fenómenos-de-mundo, heterogéneos o irreductibles a las cosas, los acontecimientos y los entes. Estos fenómenos, intrínsecamente ‘cosmológicos’, en el sentido de Fink, en tanto fenómenos-de-mundo, son, en efecto, inasimila- bles para los entes (cosas o acontecimientos), en la estricta medida en que pueden por principio reabsorberse en la presencia. El presente texto lleva a cabo una interpretación de las Contribuciones de Moritz Geiger. Así, sostiene que el análisis de Geiger del fenómeno del gozo lleva a cabo una epoché de la percepción intencional, en la medida en que la «plenitud» (Fülle) del objeto del gozo sólo puede darse en tanto vivencia de la disposición afectiva misma, en tanto un estar afectado a través de aquello que irradia al interior de sí. El gozo sería, así, una especie de apercepción trascendental (...) inmediata puramente sensible de sí mismo. Ello plantea el problema de cómo es posible dar cuenta fenomenológicamente de una vivencia que consiste en la auto-afección de un yo en su estar absorbido o irradiado. Por último, más allá del análisis de Geiger, la experiencia de lo sublime es interpretada como una epoché en la cual, no es el yo quien toma distancia para considerar al «objeto» del gozo como aquello en lo cual me encuentro afectado en su absorción, sino que es una experiencia de una trascendencia con respecto a mi yo en su parpadeo fenomenológico, con lo cual es ella quien me acoge en su desbordamiento. We conduct a standardized survey on risk preferences in 53 countries worldwide and estimate cumulative prospect theory parameters from the data. The parameter estimates show that significant differences on the cross-country level are to some extent robust and related to economic and cultural differences. In particular, a closer look on probability weighting underlines gender differences, economic effects, and cultural impact on probability weighting. The data set is a useful starting point for future research that investigates the impact of risk preferences (...) on the market level. (shrink)

Husserls Analyse der Wahrnehmung und Heideggers Zeittheorie sind beide in ihrem Theorieaufbau auf die Gegenständlichkeit der Gegenstände – oder auf den Gegenstandsbezug der Erfahrung und seine wesensmäßige Konstitution – fixiert. Hierin spiegelt sich, bei Heidegger explizit, Kantisches Erbe. Diese phänomenologische, transzendentalphilosophische Relevanz des Gegenstands verweist im Kern auf Intentionalität – und damit auf eine objektbezogene Selbstüberschreitungsfigur der Subjektivität. Ganz anders bestimmt Latour den Stellenwert der Dinge im Kollektiv, wenn er ihnen eine Handlungsmacht zuschreibt, die den traditionellen Gegensatz zwischen Handlungssubjekten und (...) Objektbehandlung einklammert. Der folgende Beitrag kreist den kritischen Punkt ein, der in der Theoriebildung zur Verzweigung phänomenologischer und ANTistischer Ansätze führt. Während sich die Phänomenologie im Zuge einer begrifflichen Rekonstruktion der Erfahrung von Gegenständen konsolidiert, ist die ANT auf die Beschreibung von Handlungsstrukturen ausgerichtet, die sich aus Aktanten aller Art zusammensetzen. Abschließend stellt sich die Frage, ob nicht die kollektivistische Soziologie Latours von dem methodischen Solipsismus der Phänomenologie lernen kann, dass es eine konstruktive Dimension und Machtfülle der deskriptiven Arbeit gibt, die nicht einfach den Akteuren überhaupt, sondern vor allem der Analytikerin überlassen ist? Husserl's analysis of perception and Heidegger's theory of time are both fixated on the objectivity of objects - or the objectrelation of experience and its essential constitution. This reflects - and in the case of Heidegger quite explicitly - Kantian heritage. This phenomenological, transcendental relevance of the object essentially refers to intentionality - and thus an object-related figure of self-transcending subjectivity. Quite differently, Latour determines the status of things in the collective, ascribing to them an agency that brackets the traditional opposition between acting subjects and passive objects. The contribution encircles precisely that critical point which leads to the separation of phenomenological and ANTistical approaches. While phenomenology grounds itself by reconstructing the experience of objects, ANT focuses on the description of the structures of action, which are composed of actants of all kinds. Finally, the question arises whether Latour's collectivist sociology can learn from phenomenology's methodological solipsism that there is a constructive dimension and plenitude of power in the work of description that is not just left to actors in general, but above all to the analyst herself?
