With the advance of COVID-19 in the world, it is necessary to reflect on how the different realities influence the processes of advancement and containment of the impacts generated from the pandemic. Guinea-Bissau, being a country that has been recording military coups since 1980, has become a vulnerable country in all respects. The vulnerability of the country is so great that structural reform has not been possible in the state apparatus since its independence from the yoke Portuguese in 1973; in (...) this way this Democratic Republic is economically dependent on its international partners even for the implementation of its general state budget. With cashew nuts as the main and almost only product that moves the economy, the country has seen the needs and demands of the population worsen with the arrival of the new coronavirus, thus having the increase in the expenses of families in acquiring food and hygiene products to cope with the disease, in view of the economic weakness of its citizens. This article aims to analyze the sociopolitical processes that influence the management of the pandemic in Guinea Bissau. Its work methodology is a review of literature obtained through scientific journals and portals. It was observed in this path the need for training of new professional staff and greater investment in the structure, both economic and health, so that we can manage moments of crisis as faced. This will only be possible through the alignment between state and civil society around a participatory and supportive development project. (shrink)

Vinculado al proceso de degeneración de la potencia instintiva humana y su animalidad, se estableció un modelo de conocimiento, basado en el ideal metafísico y la creencia incondicional de la verdad. The present paper begins with an analysis of a letter from Edmund Burke written in January 1790, the moment when the statesman declared himself against the French Revolution, in order to conjoin the letter with other texts from the author where the organic and hereditary aspects of civil society, as well as the forming and deforming role of words in political activity, are discussed. The second part of the text consists in the translation and notes of the aforesaid letter.

Civil disobedience is a form of protest consisting in an act contrary to law, whose aim is to bring about a change in laws or policies deemed unjust. In the traditional Western philosophical debate, civil disobedience was mainly discussed and justified within the boundaries of a democratic regime. John Rawls’ theory of civil disobedience is explicitly based on this liberal assumption. He conceptualises civil disobedience as a public, nonviolent, conscientious and political breach of the law, only appropriate to nearly just (...) societies, hence to democratic regimes. This article intends to question Rawls’ premise by considering civil disobedience from a different perspective: when it is undertaken outside of a nearly just framework, precisely in not fully democratic contexts, such as the so-called “anocracies”, regimes that mix democratic and autocratic traits. The emblematic case of Sudan’s most recent actions of civil disobedience is examined to argue that, contrary to the liberal conceptualisation, civil disobedience does have a role and appropriateness in frameworks of this kind, where the aim is not only to oppose unjust laws or policies, but also to achieve a broader structural change through rigorously nonviolent forms of political action. In the final pages of Chapter V of Afro-Brazilian Religions Roger Bastide sees, at a given moment in the socio-religious evolution of Brazil, a process of social disorganization which in its extent affects not only blacks but also poor white nationals and stranded immigrants.* As generator of a “ social marginalization,” this process could only be the passage through “a moment of transition” characterized by “the exaggerated speed of change in the country.” According to Bastide, an “organic period” follows: with (...) the “proletarization of the blacks, the assimilation of the immigrants, the general rise in the standard of living of the masses, other phenomena of cultural and social reintegration will appear.” On the religious level the “spiritism of umbanda“ is the expression of this new phase. The differentiation of male and female characteristics in vertebrates and insects has long been thought to proceed via different mechanisms. Traditionally, vertebrate sexual development was thought to occur in two phases: a primary and a secondary phase, the primary phase involving the differentiation of the gonads, and the secondary phase involving the differentiation of other sexual traits via the influence of sex hormones secreted by the gonads. In contrast, insect sexual development was thought to depend exclusively on cell‐autonomous expression of (...) sex‐specific genes. Recently, however, new evidence indicates that both vertebrates and insects rely on sex hormones as well as cell‐autonomous mechanisms to develop sexual traits. Collectively, these new data challenge the traditional vertebrate definitions of primary and secondary sexual development, call for a redefinition of these terms, and indicate the need for research aimed at explaining the relative dependence on cell‐autonomous versus hormonally guided sexual development in animals. Hume's project aimed at the discovery of the principles of human nature, and among these the most important in most respects is not association of ideas, but the one he calls "custom or habit." But what is the real nature of Hume's principle? It would be philosophically naïve to decide that Hume's concept of habit simply reproduces the dominant conception. In the latter the main element is time, and the possibility of habit depending only on repetition is absent in the (...) tradition, from Aristotle to Berkeley. When Hume proposes to explain causal inference by habit, he uses this word as tantamount to the old principle of induction by simple enumeration, which may depend only on repetition, the element of time being reduced to the strict minimum necessary for the repetition to occur. Hume's principle of causal knowledge is really a new principle, not the old "psychological" tendency called custom or habit, and his attempt tacitly was to change the very essence of the concept involved. This article explores the tension between standardization and flexibility in information infrastructure. Just like other large technical systems, the geographically dispersed yet highly interconnected II becomes increasingly resistant to change. Still, II design must anticipate and prepare for changes, even substantial ones, if infrastructure is to survive. An II contains a huge number of components that alternate between standardization and change throughout their lifetimes. These components are interdependent: when one is changed, others have to remain stable, and vice versa. The (...) article examines theoretical concepts for frammg these aspects of an II. In semiotics, final causation can be related to the process of determination (PAPE, 1993). From Peirce’s point of view, determination is not a causal determinism, but a delimitation of a range of possibilities. One starts from objects towards interpretants, in a process mediated by the sign, in which the dynamic object works as a force that constrains interpretants to correspond to their objects. The correspondence between object and interpretant is important because it is through a generated interpretant that the object (...) of a sign can be known. Even though this process of determination coincides with the idea of final causation, there is a certain indeterminacy in it. For Peirce (EP 2:353, 1905), vagueness and generality are two types of indeterminacy. In the terms of the phenomenological categories, vagueness is an indeterminacy of the order of firstness, generality an indeterminacy of the order of thirdness, and both, to some extent, are opposed to that which is defined, which belongs to secondness. Each aspect of the sign may vary according to the three phenomenological categories. Consequently, degrees of imprecision are added to the semiotic process, which is a determination process. Peirce asserts that the perfect precision of thought is theoretically unattainable (SS 11, 1903). Every sign is vague or general at least to some degree. In this paper, we seek to perceive degrees of indetermination and causality from an analysis of the kinds of objects and interpretants proposed by Peirce in the system of 28 sign classes. (shrink)

“In Another Country” draws upon Hemingway's experiences during World War I. Narrated by a wounded young American, this story is a parable of early machine-rehabilitation therapy, one in which the strong optimism of a physician employing new machines is contrasted with the skepticism of an Italian major (“the greatest fencer in Italy”) who, disbelieving in the machines, nevertheless comes regularly for therapy to his hand. That daily attendance is interrupted only when the major's young wife dies suddenly. The major, who (...) had instructed the American never to put himself “in a position to lose,” has himself just “lost” the wife he had married when he felt sure that his own wounding had effectively taken him out of danger of being killed at the front. His continued stoicism offers the young soldier an example of ethical and moral behavior, for after her funeral he resumes his daily routine of machine-therapy. Seen against the ineffectiveness of the machines, the major's behavior seems to offer an example of the only “therapy” possible in this world of wounds and machines. (shrink)

The formation of the moral point of view in Bernard Williams’ work might be understood as taking place between two central concepts: the individual and the community. It is through the tension between these two poles that some form of knowledge is acquired. In Williams’ work, the individual virtue takes the name of authenticity, and the communitarian knowledge is, importantly, ethical confidence. A philosophical peer of Williams, Alasdair MacIntyre, has dealt with the same question, although in very different ways. They (...) are usually taken to be philosophical rivals in many respects, especially regarding their political views, their views on religion and their thoughts on Aristotle. But if we look deeper into their claims, we should discover that not only do they have similar ethical concerns, as their responses to those concerns are not, in essence, as different as they seem. My purpose with this paper, however, is not to deny the important differences between the two philosophers, but rather to make conspicuous Williams’ demanding ideas on the formation of the moral point of view by (1) connecting significant portions of his work and (2) contrasting his ideas with that of a philosophical “rival,” namely by interpreting MacIntyre’s own declarations on Williams’ work. It will stand out that both philosophers’ motivation to do ethics is to grant an equilibrium between the individual conscience and the moral knowledge that is acquired within a community. (shrink)

Professores são acometidos por depressão acima da média populacional. Este estudo buscou identificar quais fatores do contexto trabalho e vivências de prazer e sofrimento no trabalho são preditivos de depressão em professores do ensino privado do Rio Grande do Sul. Realizou-se uma pesquisa quantitativa explicativa com uma amostra de 197 professores com sintomas de depressão de todos os níveis de ensino privado. Os instrumentos utilizados foram a Escala de Indicadores de Prazer e Sofrimento no Trabalho, a Escala de Avaliação do (...) Contexto de Trabalho e o Inventário Beck de Depressão. A coleta de dados foi realizada, inicialmente, online e depois por Correio. Foi realizada análise de regressão linear por método stepwise. Como resultados, identificou-se que as variáveis preditoras de depressão foram: esgotamento emocional e realização socioprofissional. Considerou-se que as vivências de frustração, insegurança e estresse contribuem diretamente para a falta de identificação e de orgulho pelo trabalho docente. (shrink)

Translating and validating measurement instruments in sport and exercise psychology is not an easy task. Rather, it is a task that requires effort and time, for the process is not limited to a simple translation to translate words from one language to another, just in order to make valid and reliable measure. All researchers should be aware that the only proper way is to adopt rigorous and robust methodologies to conduct the process from the preliminary stage of translation to reaching (...) the validation stage of the psychological variable. Only so is it possible to avoid creating fragile and inadequate psychological assessment instruments that can jeopardize the entire investigation to be held with its use. Thus, the main objective of this work is to promote reflection and discussion on the subject by presenting some considerations and recommendations about translation and validation of questionnaires for psychological assessment applied to sport and exercise domain. This study investigated the importance of socioeconomic factors such as education, income, religion, family structure and residence in explaining the increased risk of mortality among vulnerable populations aged less than 20 years in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Data used were from the 1991 Brazilian Demographic Census and comprised 121,060 women aged 15–49 residing in Rio de Janeiro. Two alternative statistical methods were used to calculate the risk of death: the widely used Brass method (an indirect estimate which assesses population risks) (...) and a case-control study (which assesses individual risks). The study also focused on the importance of indicators of human and social capital, the lack of which may explain the higher risk of death among children and adolescents. Lack of education was found to be a major determinant of mortality at young ages. Residence in a favela (shantytown), families in which mothers were the head of the family, and a lower median level of income were found to be significant determinants of mortality among vulnerable populations in Brazil. However, religion was not found to be as important a predictor of high mortality. (shrink)

A exemplaridade surge como um dos pontos altos dos filmes de Vida de Santo, ou hagiografia fílmica, por essa razão verificaremos sua estética, estrutura e finalidade. Bem como traçaremos (...) as relações necessárias entre a personagem histórica, sua música, seu pensamento, com o que dela sobressai na obra cinematográfica. Por método, partimos incialmente apenas da obra midiática, decupando-a, estudando sua narrativa, forma estética e estrutura, para só então levantar as questões mais importantes ali colocadas relacionando-as com os fatos sociais. A preservação da sua originalidade e da sua integridade é essencial e vital à realização da justiça assente numa descoberta da verdade processual prática, material, judicial e válida, de modo que possamos afirmar que os direitos e liberdades fundamentais de todos os afetados pelo processo-crime sejam garantidos e, assim, restabelecida a paz jurídica e social. A química e a física, em seu contexto histórico e cultural, se desenvolveram paralelamente no escopo da filosofia natural, e a química em especial, com elementos oriundos da medicina metalurgia e alquimia. O caráter tecnológico, pragmatismo e desinteresse metafísico dos químicos aliado a uma visão reducionista da química a física foram obstáculos relevantes para desenvolvimento tardio de uma filosofia da química. O uso de métodos analíticos de investigação química, como a espectroscopia, evidencia estreita relação histórica entre química e física na (...) prática química. bem como, os modelos de atômicos fundamentados na mecânica quântica. A química é uma disciplina autônoma e distinta da física, porém, do ponto de vista metafísico e ontológico suas entidades, teorias e leis podem ser distinguíveis? Metodologicamente a física pode ser usada para compreender a química? E do ponto de vista epistemológico as explicações em química são redutivas a física? O ponto central é saber se a química é redutível “em princípio” a física. Sobre essas questões, muito tem se escrito, porém, gostaríamos de refletir sobre este problema a partir da perspectiva da filosofia dos aspectos modais de Herman Dooyeweerd afim de verificar se sua visão filosófica-ontológica pode oferecer uma contribuição na discussão minimamente satisfatória ao problema do reducionismo da química à Física. Trata-se de um relato de experiência sobre o projeto “Prevenção: é um prazer falar sobre isso”, com o objetivo de fomentar ações de prevenção às Infecções Sexualmente Transmissíveis (ISTs) com o público universitário. Pautadas na abordagem da educação entre pares, foram realizadas 6 oficinas com universitárias dos cursos de saúde, culminando na produção de uma intervenção denominada Barraca do Tinder. A intervenção foi realizada numa universidade pública paranaense e visava expandir o alcance do projeto, produzindo discussão sobre sexualidade, vulnerabilidade e (...) prevenção através de abordagem participativa e lúdica junto ao público universitário. Discutimos os resultados do projeto, destacando o imaginário acerca da Aids, a vulnerabilidade relacionada a populações específicas, a efetividade da metodologia da educação entre pares e do uso de cenas sexuais como dispositivos de prevenção. Resumo: O artigo trata da especificidade de um dos produtos tecnológicos de vigilância e de ataque aéreos mais importantes em uso atualmente, os drones, mostrando em que sentido essa nova tecnologia traça um marco decisivo na evolução do domínio dos ares e, portanto, como sugere Carl Schmitt, na transformação do campo teológico-político das sociedades contemporâneas. A imanência radical do campo político proposta pelo liberalismo, diagnosticada por Schmitt, terá nos drones um de seus instrumentos mais exemplares. Para caracterizar a especificidade dos (...) drones frente a outros aparelhos visuais e aéreos de guerra, será proposta uma aproximação com o conceito de imagem-tempo de Gilles Deleuze, de tal modo a determinar essa sua singularidade a partir das propriedades intrínsecas da imagem gerada. A principal característica da imagem-tempo deleuziana a ser integrada à análise dos drones será seu aspecto tátil. Nesse momento, a aproximação dos livros de Deleuze sobre o cinema com sua obra escrita com Félix Guattari será essencial para determinar a dimensão política da imagem-drone.: This paper deals with the specificity that characterizes one of the most important technological aerial products dedicated to surveillance and attack being in use nowadays, the drones, showing in which sense this new technology is a decisive turning point in the evolution of the domination of the skies and therefore, as suggested by Carl Schmitt, in the transformation of the political-theological field in contemporary societies. The radical immanence of the political field proposed by liberalism, such as Schmitt described it, finds in drones one of its most typical instruments. To characterize the specificity of drones regarding other visual and aerial war machines, it will be proposed an approximation with the Deleuzian concept of image-time, in order to determine its singularity through the intrinsic properties of the images so produced. The main characteristic of the Deleuzian time-image to be integrated in the analysis of drones will be its haptic aspect. At this point, the relation between Deleuze’s cinema books and his work in collaboration with Félix Guattari will be essential to characterize the political dimension of the drone-image. (shrink)

O objetivo deste artigo reside em esclarecer a associação entre pluralismo e imanência na teoria política de William E. Connolly para, em seguida, trabalhar algumas implicações filosóficas sobre a sua concepção de democracia. Ao desenvolver uma contraposição entre o posicionamento do autor e os de Ralws, Habermas e Laclau, o artigo situa as contribuições e possíveis ressalvas de uma teoria política calcada na imanência acerca dos desafios presentes nas democracias contemporâneas pluralistas.

This paper intends to develop the idea of a political ontology implicitly developed within the political reflections that are an important part of the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. In this research a political ontology means a specific reflection about the political construction of the social reality which also involves a questioning of the nature of the political. To what extent, in Deleuze and Guattari´s philosophy, ontology is related to a theoretical and practical engagement with politics? How relevant (...) is conceptual creation to the political practice? The main research´s hypothesis is that political ontology is intertwined with the kind of conceptual creation, which the authors conceive as philosophy´s specific task. Taking as our starting point previous discussions from Deleuze and Guattari´s scholars, this article develops a reading of their political philosophy through the relation between the political and conceptual construction. The increase in women’s labor market participation emphasizes the importance of understanding maternal separation anxiety, that is, the unpleasant maternal emotional state, due to the actual or anticipated short-term separation from the child. Drawing on the insights of the attachment and psychoanalytic perspectives, the Maternal Separation Anxiety Scale was developed to overcome existing measurement gaps. However, prior research did not replicate its original three-factor structure in the contemporary context and in other cultural settings, using large samples composed of mothers of (...) preschool children. This study aimed to examine the factorial structure of the MSAS in a sample of 597 Portuguese mothers of children aged 5–84 months who completed the questionnaire. The exploratory factor analysis conducted in subsample 1 revealed a four-factor structure: Maternal Negative Feelings, Beliefs about Exclusive Maternal Care, Need of Proximity, and Perceptions of Separation Benefits for Children. Confirmatory factor analyses conducted in subsample 2 revealed that the original three-factor structure revealed a poor fit, whereas the four-factor solution revealed an acceptable fit. As in previous studies, our findings report deviations from the original three-factor structure of the MSAS. Three of the newly identified factors seem to reflect specific sub-dimensions that originally guided item development in the MSAS, namely, maternal negative feelings, maternal attitudes about the value of exclusive maternal care, and the need of proximity with the child. The last factor appears to represent a refinement of original items pertaining to perceptions about separation effects for children. (shrink)

Bergson concebeu sua teoria do conhecimento fundamentada numa teoria da vida: com base nos dados da experiência, defende que a vida desenvolve potenciais de consciência, liberdade, inteligência e intuição que culminam no ser humano. Neste artigo, após contextualizarmos sua vida e obra, buscamos mostrar como, a partir de sua teoria do conhecimento, delineia-se uma forma inovadora de se compreender a subjetividade e a educação.

O presente trabalho tem o objetivo de compreender como o pensador francês Michel Foucault expande argumentativamente sua prática metodológica, à medida que acresce uns aos outros, e ao passo em que os descobre, métodos para pesquisas históricas. Tencionando alcançar tal intento, efetua-se estudo acerca: do modo como seus métodos se estruturam no bojo; dos objetos de estudo para os quais esses métodos se voltam ; das conclusões a que chega o autor em suas pesquisas históricas, sob a mediação dos métodos (...) utilizados. Com a explicitação destes eixos, demonstra-se que arqueologia do saber e genealogia do poder não são estritamente operações de pesquisas, organizadas em material impresso sob forma de livros. Tratam-se também, sobretudo, de instrumentos os quais contém finalidade política bem definida, qual seja: a de denunciar ou mesmo expor enquanto político clamor o caráter arbitrário que se esconde por detrás dos discursos científicos legitimados, demonstrando que o que conduz a tal legitimação é a supressão imanente, a sujeição, de distintos discursos – operação que se decorre através das relações de saber/poder as quais permeiam instituições, bem como se estendem em alcance à estrutura interna do espaço social na sua totalidade. Organização do Conhecimento estabelecem limites, traçados, estruturas ou hierarquias em seu modo de tratar, organizar e compartilhar a informação e o conhecimento. A pesquisa tem como procedimentos metodológicos um estudo teórico, bibliográfico, que inter-relaciona aspectos da filosofia da diferença, mais precisamente, o estudo do rizoma de Deleuze e Guattari com a Ciência da Informação e a Organização do Conhecimento. Ao ser contrário à ideia de árvore, o rizoma desponta automaticamente nas relações das árvores do conhecimento utilizadas como base para organizar e representar o conhecimento. Esses modelos representacionais não podem mais organizar o conhecimento e a informação diante a liquefação de suas estruturas no polo virtual. O problema é compreender como a Ciência da Informação se ajustará à realidade rizomática da informação virtual. (shrink)

We determine the number of non‐isomorphic semi‐Heyting algebras on an n‐element chain, where n is a positive integer, using a recursive method. We then prove that the numbers obtained agree with those determined in [1]. We apply the formula to calculate the number of non‐isomorphic semi‐Heyting chains of a given size in some important subvarieties of the variety of semi‐Heyting algebras that were introduced in [5]. We further exploit this recursive method to calculate the numbers of non‐isomorphic semi‐Heyting chains with (...) n elements such that removing the mth element () we are left with a subalgebra. We also solve a related problem posed in [1] of determining the number of ways a semi‐Heyting chain with elements can be extended to a n element semi‐Heyting chain by adding a new element in the mth place. Finally we combine these results by finding a second way to calculate the numbers that provides some extra information. (shrink)

Visiones antropológicas divergentes en artículos científicos de bioética en Brasil Divergent Anthropological Views in Scientific Articles on Bioethics in Brazil The aim of the study is to characterize Brazilian bioethics outputs anthropologically, specifically scientific articles. The guiding question of this research is: What is the anthropological characterization present in scientific articles on bioethics in Brazil? Prominent bioethical theories show restrictive anthropology indicators; i.e., dignity is given only to members of the human species that have certain attributes, including conscience and self-consciousness, (...) as opposed to comprehensive anthropology indicators in relation to human beings; i.e., dignity is equally assigned to all members of the Homo sapiens species. In conclusion, comprehensive anthropology indicators and theoretical divergence in relation to the origin of life, especially between utilitarianism and personalism, prevail. > Wealthy nations must do much more, much faster. The United Nations General Assembly in September 2021 will bring countries together at a critical time for marshalling collective action to tackle the global environmental crisis. They will meet again at the biodiversity summit in Kunming, China, and the climate conference 26) in Glasgow, UK. Ahead of these pivotal meetings, we—the editors of health journals worldwide—call for urgent action to keep average global temperature increases below 1.5°C, halt the destruction of nature (...) and protect health. Health is already being harmed by global temperature increases and the destruction of the natural world, a state of affairs health professionals have been bringing attention to for decades.1 The science is unequivocal; a global increase of 1.5°C above the preindustrial average and the continued loss of biodiversity risk catastrophic harm to health that will be impossible to reverse.2 3 Despite the world’s necessary preoccupation with COVID-19, we cannot wait for the pandemic to pass to rapidly reduce emissions. Reflecting the severity of the moment, this editorial appears in health journals across the world. We are united in recognising that only fundamental and equitable changes to societies will reverse our current trajectory. The risks to health of increases above 1.5°C are now well established.2 Indeed, no temperature rise is ‘safe’. In the past 20 years, heat-related mortality among people aged over 65 has increased by more than 50%.4 Higher temperatures have brought increased dehydration and renal function loss, dermatological malignancies, tropical infections, adverse mental health outcomes, pregnancy complications, allergies, and cardiovascular and pulmonary morbidity and mortality.5 6 Harms disproportionately affect the most vulnerable, including children, older populations, ethnic minorities, poorer communities and those with underlying health problems.2 4 Global heating is also contributing to the decline in …. TRABALHO INFANTIL PERIGOSO: VIOLAÇÃO À SAÚDE E CONSEQUÊNCIAS JURÍDICO-SOCIAIS.

Since the last war, one character of the political system in Belgium is the growth and the duration of the ministerial crisis. Some questions of public law appeared. How is it possible to maintain the continuity of the political and administrative action, without ministerial responsibility to Parliament, during the crisis? The Belgian Conseil d'Etat contributed, by the notion of the «affaires courantes», sort of general principle of public law, to give a solution to this problem.
