We prove that the following are consistent with ZFC. 1. 2 ω = ℵ ω 1 + K C = ℵ ω 1 + K B = K U = ω 2 (for measure and category simultaneously). 2. 2 ω = ℵ ω 1 = K C (L) + K C (M) = ω 2 . This concludes the discussion about the cofinality of K C.

W artykule podjęto kwestię władzy jako istotnej kategorii występującej w komiksach serii „Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek” H. J. Chmielewskiego. Relacje władzy i przywództwa są tworzone i reprodukowane w mikrośrodowisku, jaką tworzy trzech głównych bohaterów zrzeszonych w specyficzny rodzaj koleżeńskiej grupy: tworzą oni zastęp harcerski funkcjonujący przy szkole podstawowej. Stabilność tej grupy podtrzymywana jest przez ramy instytucjonalne, w których funkcjonują bohaterowie. W kategoriach analitycznych władza jest tu rozumiana na sposób neoweberowski (podejście transformacyjne) oraz poststrukturalistyczny (władza dyscyplinarna). Szczególną rolę pełni tu (...) postać zastępowego A’Tomka: jest on liderem środowiskowym, autorytetem i przedstawicielem elit. (shrink)

Tom specjalny „Avantu” poświęcamy twórczości komiksowej Henryka Jerzego Chmielewskiego, nazywanego Papciem Chmielem (także Dziadkiem Chmielem) oraz głównym postaciom serii komiksów „Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek” (dalej: „TRiA”). Wydawana od 1966 roku w formie osobnych albumów seria liczy 31 ksiąg, stając się najdłużej wydawanym w Polsce cyklem, który zajął poczesne miejsce w historii polskiego komiksu. Początkowo przy-gody Tytusa jawiły się jako wejście w krainę wyobraźni dziecięcej (księgi III-XVIII), z czasem jednak Chmielewski przeszedł do doraźnych komentarzy na temat zmieniającej się polskiej rzeczywistości (...) (od Księgi XX). Zmiana ta nastąpiła w momencie transformacji systemowej w Polsce. Przełom 1989/1990 to okres, w którym „Tytusy” zaczęły być wznawiane przez autora w unowo-cześnionej szacie graficznej (część książeczek narysowano na nowo) i zmienionej formie fabularnej: pojawiły się nowe rysunki, przearanżowano część starszych, dodano wypowiedzi bohaterów. W tym okresie Chmielewski nie wydawał książeczek z nowymi przygodami Tytusa; te zaczęły się pojawiać od 1992 roku, a autor zaczął opisywać w nich zmiany zachodzące w Polsce. Po przełomie politycznym 1989/1990 magiczne i osadzone w wyobraźni wątki zestawione zostały z tym, co w aktualnej polskiej rzeczywistości społecznej wydawało się Papciowi zajmujące, a często – niepokojące lub wymagające interwencji. Tytus zatem stał się członkiem afiliowanego przy NATO oddziału wojskowego, walczył z handlarzami narkotyków, rysował graffiti, mistrzowsko jeździł na desce, zwalczał bądź to chuliganów na meczach piłkarskich, bądź to gangi przestępcze, czy też intensywnie poznawał internet. Anxiety shifts visual attention and perceptual mechanisms, preparing oneself to detect potentially threatening information more rapidly. Despite being demonstrated for threat‐related social stimuli, such as fearful expressions, it remains unexplored if these effects encompass other social cues of danger, such as aggressive gestures/actions. To this end, we recruited a total of 65 participants and asked them to identify, as quickly and accurately as possible, potentially aggressive actions depicted by an agent. By introducing and manipulating the occurrence of electric shocks, we (...) induced safe and threatening conditions. In addition, the association between electric shocks and aggression was also manipulated. Our result showed that participants have improved sensitivity, with no changes to criterion, when detecting aggressive gestures during threat compared to safe conditions. Furthermore, drift diffusion model analysis showed that under threat participants exhibited faster evidence accumulation toward the correct perceptual decision. Lastly, the relationship between threat source and aggression appeared to not impact any of the effects described above. Overall, our results indicate that the benefits gained from states of anxiety, such as increased sensitivity toward threat and greater evidence accumulation, are transposable to social stimuli capable of signaling danger other than facial expressions. This paper elaborates on conceptual, empirical and practical arguments why corporations need to focus on their social dimensions, in order to further enhance organizational performance. The paper starts with an introduction on the general trend towards inclusiveness and connectedness. It then elaborates on the phase-wise development of cultures and organizational structures. Managing corporate improvement by building cultures of trust is the central focus of this contribution. By showing the cultural dimensions of Great Places to Work and their workplace practices, worthwhile (...) experiences leading to organizational improvement and superior financial performance are demonstrated. Through qualitative surveys, a team of law students, law professors, physicians, and residents explored the perceptions of neurology residents towards referral to appropriate legal resources in an academic training program. Respondents reported feeling uncomfortable screening their patients for health-harming legal needs, which many attributed to a lack of training in this area. These findings indicate that neurology residents would benefit from training on screening for social factors that may be impacting their patients’ health.

A simple model, illustrating the transition from a population of free swimming, solitary cells to one consisting of small colonies serves as a basis to discuss the evolution of the cooperative group. The transition is the result of a mutation of the dynamics of cell division, delayed cell separation leads to colonies of four cells. With this mutation cooperative features appear, such as synchronised cell divisions within colonies and coordinated flagellar function which enables the colony to swim in definite directions. (...) The selective advantages under given, environmental conditions are defined and the periods necessary for complete allelic replacement in small populations are calculated for asexual and sexual reproduction. The assumption of a steady-state population during allelic substitution is critically considered, particularly under conditions of competition. It is shown that density-dependent population control must operate in the process of selection. Sexual reproduction slows down the rate of selection even though all cells dre haploid. This phenomenon can be explained in general terms of `organizational dominance', where individual units coordinate the function of their neighbours which may be of a different allelotype.Cooperativity is pointed out as an a priori systemic feature which resides in the sub-units of systems, group formation and coordination appears thus as an almost inevitable event. A particular type of system described as ‘closed cycle of positive fitness interaction’ is discussed in more detail. It has the remarkable feature that its members cannot compete with each other; selection takes place between whole cycles .Gonium has a wide spectrum of `somatic plasticity' which enables it to assume various colonial configurations depending on physiological and environmental conditions. This feature can be explained as the result of dynamic flexibilities on the macro-molecular level. The particular relationship between the vast, molecular complexity and the relative simple dynamics of the cell cycle must lead eventually to the genetic fixation of an environmentally induced phenotype. Linking specific nursing actions to outcomes in the healthcare setting is challenging. Patient outcomes are varied and influenced by a myriad of factors, and always involve a wider team than any one nurse. It is difficult to control for a single action or set of actions of a particular nurse. Furthermore, practice is seldom about any ‘one’ action, for one thing leads to another, all within a complex interplay of influencing factors. In this article, we outline a research method which (...) combined Dewey's pragmatism with Gadamer's hermeneutics to explore the consequences of the nurse's use of advanced assessment skills in the acute care setting of medical and surgical wards. This pragmatic hermeneutic methodological approach allowed the complex interplay of influences to be revealed in the unfolding story. Reflection of the nurse brought insights that may otherwise have been passed over. The philosophical notions of Dewey drew attention to the play of ‘means’ and ‘ends’. A hermeneutic approach that calls for ‘thinking’ extends understanding and raises insights that can inform education and practice. (shrink)
