Depuis la redécouverte des frontons du temple du IVe siècle, dont le point de départ avait été en 1971 la reconstitution de la figure centrale du fronton Ouest, celle-ci a fait l'objet d'une double critique, concernant d'une part la validité même du rapprochement entre la tête et le torse, de l'autre l'identification de la statue avec le Dionysos mentionné par Pausanias. Mais par un étrange amalgame la seconde objection — la seule sérieuse car elle se fondait sur une réelle difficulté (...) iconographique (Dionysos apparaît ici dans l'attitude et avec le vêtement d'Apollon Citharède) — est venue paradoxalement renforcer la première, engendrant un scepticisme latent, qui a déjà semé dans la bibliographie, notamment dans le LIMC, une inquiétante confusion. Un ouvrage récent consacré à la typologie d'Apollon Citharède risquant de l'aggraver encore, on essaie de faire ici, dans l'espoir d'y mettre un terme, l'historique de ces discussions inutiles. In the fifth stasimon of Antigone the chorus observes that "the whole city is subject to a violent sickness" and invokes Dionysos to "come with kathartic foot." It is generally assumed that the katharsis the chorus has in mind is purification of Thebes from a plague or pollution arising from the unburied corpse of Polyneikes; katharsis of this sort is however unattested as a function of Dionysos. It is argued that this is rather the earliest explicit attestation of the kathartic (...) effect of ecstatic Dionysiac dancing upon nosos as mental disorder, the chorus equating the mental nosos of Kreon, Antigone and Haimon with the nosos of civil strife affecting Thebes. A large number of passages indicate that mention of feet in cultic and especially Dionysiac contexts almost invariably refers to dancing, which is a dominant motif of the fifth stasimon both in its content as hymn to Dionysos and formally as a hyporcheme. Evidence from the fifth century and from Plato for the connection of Dionysos with kathartic dancing as a cure for mental disorder is stronger than previous discussions maintain. It is suggested that Sophokles elides two senses of nosos-mental disorder and civil strife-and that the chorus are invoking Dionysos to relieve them of the stress of these, rather than of a general plague or pollution. Whereas mental disorders and civil strife are constant themes of the play, the corpse as pollutant affects only altars-nothing like a "violent plague" is attested in the text. This reinterpretation of the ode suggests that it relates rather to the tragic conflict still to be played out among the principal characters than to the corpse, which is shortly buried with invocation of Hekate and Plouton rather than Dionysos. "Dionysos" ist in Nietzsches Spätwerk das "Gegenwort" zum "Willen zur Macht". Anders als der philosophische Begriff des Dionysischen in der Geburt der Tragödie bündelt der Name "Dionysos" die Erfahrungen des Ewigen im menschlichen Leben. Dieses entdeckt Nietzsche in den Möglichkeiten, sich zum Gedanken der "ewigen Wiederkehr" zu verhalten. Diesem Gedanken vernag weder Gleichgültigkeit noch das Festhalten an einer moralischen Instanz, sondern allein die religiöse, aber nicht mehr christliche Erfahrung des "ungeheuren Augenblicks" grecht zu werden. Eine solche Erfahrung des Göttlichen lässt (...) aus dem "grössten Schwergewicht" die "leichte" Freheit von der letztlich noch moralisch gebundenen Selbstüberwindung werden. Während der philosophische "Lehrer der weigen Wiederkunft" Zarathustra - als "alter Atheist", der er für Nietzsche ist - nur den "Begriff des Dionysos" kennt, zielt Nietzsche selbst mit dem Namen des griechischen Gottes des "grossen Zweideutigen und Versuchers", auf ein Erfahrung des Göttlichen, das als "Genie des Herzens" jenseits des "moralischen Gottes" ist.In Nietzsche's later work, "Dionysos" is the counterconcept to the "will to power". Unlike the philosophical concept of Dionysos in The Birth of Tragedy, the name "Dionysos" in this later work signifies that which is eternal in human life. Nietzsche discovers this in the possibility of taking an attitude towards the thought of "eternal recurrence." Neither indifference nor retreat to a moral authority is appropriate when facing this thought. The correct attitude is rather an embrace of a religious yet no longer Christian experience of the "terrible moment." Such an experience of godliness allows "the most heavy weight" to become the "light" freedom of a self-overcoming still bound to mortality. While Zarathustra, the "teacher of eternal recurrance," only know the "concept of Dionysos," Nietzsche himself is in touch with the experience of the divine. This experience, with the name of the Greek God who is "the most ambiguous and seductive" and a "genius of the heart," is beyond the "mortal God.". (shrink)

“Conversations with Dionysus”. Nietzsche’s Playful Riddles. Nietzsche has written several short dialogues that are rarely studied. Based on the mysterious ‘conversations with Dionysus’, which also include the Dionysian Dithyramb „Ariadneʼs Lament“, the paper outlines their enigmatic structure and, on this basis, proposes an interpretive model for Nietzscheʼs labyrinthine texts.

This communication wants to deal with the relations between the Philosophy of Plato and the cult of Dionysus in Ancient Greece. This makes necessary to distinguish the cult of Dionysus with its feasts and secret rituals, especially the maenadic rites of women, from orphism. The Maenads practiced rites closely associated with mania and those rites included bloody sacrifice (sparagmos) and the consommation of raw flesh (omophagy). As we assumed in our book“Dionysos em transe: la voix des femmes”, this cult was (...) an iniciatic feminine rite, connected to biological transformations particular to women, as pregnance and birth. At the other side, orphism is an asceptic and vegetarian sect, which clearly influenced some platonic theories, as exposed in Cratyle or Gorgias, concerning “the body as the tomb of the soul”. What we want to show here is the dionysiac character of some other theories, as those about the mania in Phaedrus or even the so called “platonic theory of Love” in the Symposium. We are dealing than with the definition of Philosophy itself in platonic dialogs: is Philosophy a study about death as orphic influence demands or is it a work of birth, as dionysiac influence suggests? The metaphysical center of Plato’s work has traditionally been taken to be his Doctrine of Forms; the epistemological center, the Doctrine of Recollection. The Symposium has been viewed as one of the clearest explanations of the first and Meno as one of the clearest explanations of the other. The Masks of Dionysos challenges these traditional interpretations.

Cet article considère l’interprétation originale donnée par Giorgio Colli du mythe de Dionysos enfant tué par les Titans, tandis qu’il regarde dans un miroir. La suggestion de cette lecture est que Dionysos voit le monde dans le miroir et que l’humain, comme toute autre chose, n’est rien d’autre que l’image reflétée du dieu. À la suite d’une confrontation avec les usages que Plotin, Proclus, Olympiodore et Damascius font du mythe et en particulier du symbole du miroir, je soutiens que l’interprétation (...) de Colli, bien qu’originale, s’insère pourtant dans le cadre théorique du néoplatonisme. Cela conduit à esquisser certains points de contact entre la philosophie de Plotin et la philosophie de l’expression de Colli, en montrant des enjeux théoriques qui pourraient indiscutablement intéresser tant le chercheur qui s’occupe du néoplatonisme que le philosophe contemporain. Le monument qui, à Délos, a été rendu célèbre par la restauration sur ses deux flancs de deux bases portant des phallus a été diversement interprété. Niche pour les uns, autel ou chapelle de Dionysos pour autres, il a été désigné comme un « Présentoir de monuments chorégiques » dans l'édition du Guide de Délos de Ph. Bruneau et J. Ducat parue en 2005. L'analyse de ses vestiges conduit à y reconnaître un autel, consacré à Dionysos, dans les premières décennies (...) de l'Indépendance, voire, plus précisément, dans les environs de 280 av. J.-C. Dérivé du type de l'autel à antes, il a été associé à diverses statues consacrées au dieu. L'identification permet de mieux cerner l'histoire du lieu de culte consacré à Dionysos au Nord-Est du sanctuaire d'Apollon. (shrink)
