Many semantic theories become trivial when extended with a naïve validity predicate due to the validity paradoxes. The non-classical semantic theories are the ones that allegedly preserve the naïveté of the validity predicate while being capable of avoiding the validity paradoxes. This blocking, on the other hand, usually comes at a high cost. In this paper, we argue that the pre-theoretical notion of validity that the naïve validity predicate intends to capture is unattainable.

The article discusses the following question: why has the traditional philosophy of science been reluctant to seriously deal with scientific controversies? An answer is offered and an alternative is suggested. This alternative gives a leading role to the study of controversies within the framework of the philosophy of science. This proposal is supported, firstly, by a brief review of the research methodology employed by Johannes Kepler and, secondly, by the study of the emergence of quantum mechanics by Mara Beller. The (...) defense of the study of controversies is based on the recognition of the other one as the founding point of scientific objectivity and in the proposal of a kind of triangulation. (shrink)

We advance two objections to the selfish gene theory formulated by Richard Dawkins, which states that natural selection operates on genetic replicators. These objections target three of the essential features of the theory. The first feature is the exclusivity that the theory ascribes to genetic replicators as objects of natural selection. We call it “the exclusivity clause”. The second and third features correspond to two criteria that genetic replicators must satisfy for Dawkins’ theory to hold. We call them “the stability (...) criterion” and “the fidelity criterion”. The first objection we advance is that, given the findings of transgenerational epigenetics, genetic replicators do not appear to satisfy the exclusivity clause and some of them do not seem to meet the stability criterion. The second objection is that the existence of the molecular phenomena known as alternative splicing and trans-splicing seems to entail that many genetic replicators do not satisfy neither the stability criterion nor the fidelity criterion. Dicha incorporación se habría desarrollado a través de dos momentos: en el primero se reconoce el valor de los estudios científicos y matemáticos propuestos por el francés como una vía indispensable para el estudio de las sustancias naturales del mundo; el segundo, critica la falta de continuidad metodológica empleada en el estudio de (...) la sustancia humana. O presente artigo objetiva fornecer uma apresentação crítica, compreensiva e inédita na língua portuguesa do Processamento Preditivo (PP) – um esquema teórico para a compreensão da cognição que propõe uma inversão de nosso entendimento padrão da ação, percepção, sensação e sua relação. Aqui, nosso objetivo primário será introduzir os principais conceitos e ideias do PP, tratando-o como um modelo moderadamente corporificado de cognição e analisando suas credenciais como uma proposta teórica unificadora. Para tanto, partiremos de uma contextualização histórica de algumas (...) correntes de pensamento que teriam fomentado seu desenvolvimento inicial, passando por uma descrição não-matemática do Princípio da Energia Livre, que fundamenta e subentende a atuação de suas especificidades para, então, esclarecermos o papel que, segundo o PP, a inferência bayesiana, a minimização dos erros de predição e a chamada Inferência Ativa possuiriam na manutenção homeostática de nossos cérebros e corpos preditivos. Por fim, forneceremos uma síntese de algumas consequências daquilo que o PP poderia trazer à compreensão contemporânea do cérebro e comportamento humanos, concluindo que, embora sua descrição da cognição como um processo preditivo único e contínuo prometa eventualmente unificar paradigmas explicativos e níveis de análise distintos, por ora, talvez seja melhor concebê-lo de forma mais modesta, como uma ferramenta ou heurística para nos auxiliar a repensar vários dos tópicos centrais ao estudo científico e filosófico da mente. This paper introduces the theory QST of quasets as a formal basis for the Nmatrices. The main aim is to construct a system of Nmatrices by substituting standard sets by quasets. Since QST is a conservative extension of ZFA (the Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory with Atoms), it is possible to obtain generalized Nmatrices (Q-Nmatrices). Since the original formulation of QST is not completely adequate for the developments we advance here, some possible amendments to the theory are also considered. One of the (...) most interesting traits of such an extension is the existence of complementary quasets which admit elements with undetermined membership. Such elements can be interpreted as quantum systems in superposed states. We also present a relationship of QST with the theory of Rough Sets RST, which grants the existence of models for SQT formed by rough sets. Some consequences of the given formalism for the relation of logical consequence are also analysed. (shrink)

Since its emergence, the contemporary environmental problem has become an object of analysis and intervention both for ecology (area of biology) and for different intergovernmental organizations with a global reach. In both fields, a series of conceptual frameworks have been developed aimed at addressing ecological changes, that is, those alterations that affect units that are the object of study of ecology. The aim of this paper is to clarify and contrast the ways in which disturbance ecology (a recent field within (...) ecology) and different intergovernmental organizations conceptualize and approach ecological change. To do this, we make an analytical comparison between the ecological concept of ‘disturbance’ and the notion of ‘driver’ coming from intergovernmental organizations. In the comparison, we observe that these concepts seek to explain similar processes of ecological change under the same causal logic, although they show important differences in the treatment of the initial conditions that allow them to be studied. We conclude that the notion of ‘driver’ leads to an epistemological impoverishment in relation to the concept of ‘disturbance’. Finally, we discuss some implications of this epistemological problem, given that it is the impoverished notion of ‘driver’ that is imposed on the international context when explaining an ecological change, and materialized in guidelines which are recognized by nations around the world. Thus, this impoverishment is transferred to the field of public policy. It is urgent to rethink to what extent we are contributing to the construction and reproduction of an epistemologically impoverished environmental problem. (shrink)

In this paper, I present an interpretation about the meaning of value judgements (moral and aesthetic) in the philosophy of David Hume. I state that although they are essentially descriptive of a fact (a sentiment that any spectator placed in the disinterested point of view can feel), these judgements also express a particular sentiment, at least in some cases. To achieve this aim, after introducing the questions and interpretative possibilities approached (section 1), I explain the interpretations called expressivist (mainly, its (...) projectivist subtype, commonly called ‘error theory’) and descriptivist (and its subtypes, called subjectivist and causalist), as well as the problems of accepting each one of them univocally (respectively, sections 2 and 3). Then, I argue in favor of an hybrid or conciliating interpretation according to which Hume’s philosophy is better understood as a form of descriptivism, while preserving an expressivist feature, based on the possibility of solving those problems (section 4). Meu ponto aqui é mostrar que, na passagem em questão, Frege não necessariamente nega o número 2 como um termo singular, mas apenas exemplifica a possibilidade de se negar o emprego do número 2 como (...) uma classificação de outro objeto numa sentença falsa. En el presente artículo se sugiere la filosofía inductiva de la ciencia del filósofo victoriano William Whewell como un enfoque apropiado para formular una noción consiliente de la representación científica. Tras un breve recorrido por los antecedentes que hacen necesaria una noción de representación en el ámbito de la filosofía de la ciencia, se expone, en primer lugar, la descripción de lo que se ha denominado el problema de la representación científica. De seguido, se argumenta que la anterior es una (...) caracterización poco manejable del problema que requiere ser deflacionada en favor de un perfil más acotado, para finalmente proponer que la idiosincrática noción de inducción de William Whewell puede ser considerada para desarrollar una noción de representación científica que haga consiliente las cuentas semanticistas y pragmatistas de la representación en ciencia. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in epistemic agency among philosophers. This development is in part owing to a growing interest in mental agency and epistemic normativity, along with associated concepts such as epistemic responsibility and the relationship between epistemic rationality and practical rationality. Most authors have focused solely on our agency exercised in the process of acquiring or forming beliefs in response to reasons. But some have examined temporally extended procedural epistemic agency, in particular our agency (...) exercised in the process of inquiry. In this article, I argue for an account of procedural epistemic normativity grounded in a conception of the constitutive aim of inquiry. In doing so I will examine how an account of the constitutive aim of inquiry may both differ from and be like accounts of the constitutive aim of belief and the constitutive aim of intentional action. I propose that the constitutive aim of inquiry is understanding and that the aim of understanding may provide us with the norms of inquiry. (shrink)

Las Ciencias Ómicas se presentan con la potencialidad de realizar abordajes complejos del fenómeno que estudian como también de intervenir sobre la salud humana a partir del desarrollo de tecnologías de diagnóstico y tratamiento de enfermedades. Al respecto, mostramos un análisis epistemológico de las Ciencias Ómicas sobre la utilización y alcance de conceptualizaciones complejas de la acción génica en la relación genotipo-fenotipo. En particular, si suceden o no simplificaciones epistemológicas cuando se estudian enfermedades humanas. Nuestro análisis comparativo muestra que, en (...) general, en las Ciencias Ómicas hay conceptualizaciones tanto simples como complejas de la acción génica en la relación genotipo-fenotipo, mientras que en las investigaciones ómicas que abordan enfermedades humanas se encuentra una exacerbación de conceptualizaciones simplificantes. Se discute si dicha simplificación epistemológica se ve favorecida en un escenario de intervención en aspectos de salud como es la generación de conocimientos para tecnologías ómicas de diagnóstico y tratamiento de enfermedades. Así, tal como sucede en otros ámbitos de las Ciencias Naturales, para los estudios ómicos de enfermedades se genera un vínculo necesario entre simplificaciones epistemológicas y la promesa de intervención. It appears that there is an inconsistency in combining epistemic contextualism with a plausible closure principle for knowledge and the view that knowledge is factive. I discuss the proposal that in order to avoid inconsistency the contextualist should reject closure and retain factivity. The proposal offers an alternative to closure and an argument that warrant fails to transmit through inference in the relevant cases. I criticize both accounts. The proposed alternative to closure is not well motivated and leaves unresolved the (...) question of why standard closure should not hold. The argument that warrant does not transmit is based on an inaccurate model of warrant transmission. An important lesson that emerges is that known propositions themselves can serve as warrant for further propositions, which may be known provided they are competently deduced from the former. Indeed it is arguably the factivity of knowledge that accounts for the fact that known propositions themselves serve as warrant. Thus, the strategy of rejecting closure while retaining factivity is a bad one not merely because the proposed alternatives to standard closure are inadequate and transmission failure in relevant cases would not imply closure failure, but because factivity ensures that warrant transmission worries in the relevant cases are unfounded. Pedro Barbalho oferece uma explicação alternativa que é sugerida pela tese Fregena no § 46 de Grundlagen de que uma afirmação (...) sobre um número contém uma afirmação sobre um conceito. Nesta resposta, o meu objetivo é mostrar que esta estratégia para fazer sentido de “|Ø-- 2” não realmente funciona. (shrink)

Chalmers’s two-dimensional argument against materialism (aka the zombie argument) is arguably the most ingenious attempt to ground a view about fundamental reality on epistemic considerations. From the conceivability of a being that is physically identical to a conscious being but that is deprived of phenomenal consciousness (a zombie), the argument draws on the interplay of the primary and the second intensions of the zombie hypothesis to infer the metaphysical possibility of a zombie world, and thus the falsity of physicalism about (...) phenomenality. By means of a detailed reconstruction of the two-dimensional argument, the paper tries to isolate its most central assumption: that the role played by an epistemic scenario (an intentional object) in the verification of the zombie hypothesis is played by a nonintentionally individuated metaphysical world (the zombie world) considered as actual. The paper argues that no non-viciously circular case for this assumption has been made. Thus, the two-dimensional argument is at best inconclusive. (shrink)

Algunas concepciones tradicionales de cultura suelen considerarla como un depósito de representaciones abstractas (información o conocimiento) mientras que otras la consideran un conjunto de mecanismos simbólicos de control de la conducta. Ambas concepciones suponen que los contenidos de la cultura son procesados o interiorizados por las mentes de los individuos, ya sea de una manera más o menos directa, o recurriendo a las estructuras mentales aprendidas en procesos de socialización simbólica. Las teorías corporizadas de la cognición, en especial el enactivismo, (...) cuestionan estas ideas al no formular claridades sobre cómo se dan estos procesos de enculturación. Se defiende la idea de que la cultura debería ser considerada más allá de sus resultados (conocimientos, creencias, valores, costumbres, leyes, etc.) y comprenderla como un conjunto de prácticas significativas en los que sus procesos de enculturación se dan por el acople dinámico entre los agentes humanos y sus entornos de cultura material, a través de la búsqueda de sentido participativa. Se discute si esta idea de presentar la cultura desde un punto de vista enactivo puede llevar a un reduccionismo biologicista, así como también de qué manera podría relacionarse el enactivismo con enfoques cercanos como la psicología ecológica. Desmond and Moore point out that the key to understanding Darwin’s The Descent of Man is his abolitionist motivation and his advocacy that races constitute subspecies. Roberta Millstein raises some doubts about the importance of this motivation. She points out that the inclusion of the extensive section devoted to non-human animals is not justified by Darwin’s treatment of humans per se, because his explanation of the origin of races is peculiar. In this sense, she argues that Darwin’s specific explanation of (...) the origin of races does not confirm the central importance that Desmond and Moore give to Darwin’s abolitionism. In this paper I have two different aims. On the one hand, to show that the human case actually is based on the treatment of nonhuman animals, and consequently, Darwin’s argument is not as poor as Millstein believes. My second goal, taking Millstein’s challenge seriously, is to show that Darwin’s explanation of the origin of races does confirm the Desmond and Moore thesis in a deeper sense than the one they propose themselves. For the anti-slavery motivation could not only explain the fact that Darwin sees all humans as forming the same species, but the specific explanation he gives for the origin of races. (shrink)

O procedimento de Aristóteles foi, posteriormente, compilado sob a forma de um diagrama lógico conhecido como “Ponte de Asnos” (Pons Asinorum). Neste trabalho proponho um procedimento para a construção de argumentos para uma dada conclusão, no âmbito da Lógica Proposicional Clássica, abstraído do procedimento de Aristóteles. Williamson sustenta que o conhecimento de proposições vagas só é possível se certo princípio de margem epistêmica de erro for satisfeito. Williamson emprega um princípio desse tipo para explicar a ignorância da mente não-onisciente em relação aos casos limítrofes dos conceitos vagos e no tratamento dos argumentos soríticos. Na elaboração de seu argumento a favor de um princípio de margem de erro, Williamson também envida esforços na tentativa de refutar o principio KK. Em termos semânticos, a consequência lógica é definida costumeiramente a partir do valor de verdade das premissas e conclusão: esta é verdadeira em toda situação na qual aquelas o sejam. Pode-se entender que, nestes casos, a conclusão não contém mais informação do que o conjunto de premissas. Com base nesta ideia, desenvolvemos, neste artigo, uma definição de consequência lógica informacional, baseada na noção de informação sugerida na Teoria Matemática da Comunicação. Mostramos alguns resultados, tais como que, apesar de inconsistente, o (...) sistema subjacente a essa noção não é trivial e que a lógica subjacente à consequência lógica informacional não é clássica, mas algum tipo de lógica paraconsistente. An examination of the grounds of logical necessity is offered by taking its lead from Barry Stroud’s challenge to the possibility of articulating satisfactorily any such grounds in full generality. The intelligibility of logical aliens is also considered, and different conceptions of such aliens, some more radical in their treatment of the issue than others, are examined as well. Logical aliens are beings whose thinking goes beyond the limits of thought, presumably with a logic different from our own. I argue (...) that logical aliens are either something straightforward and unproblematic or something we cannot recognize as logical. In either case, there are ways of accommodating such aliens despite the fact that the search for grounds of logical necessity is ultimately misguided. (shrink)

O artigo começa com uma conversa entre Frege e Wittgenstein. Frege fala primeiro, e apresenta o seu ponto de vista sobre os fundamentos da lógica. Daí, Wittgenstein responde em três momentos: (a) primeiro ele brinca e experimenta com as ideias de Frege para examinar o seu significado, (b) depois ele começa a apresentar as suas próprias ideias sobre a lógica, desafiando o ponto de vista de Frege, (c) e finalmente ele busca um acordo com Frege, deixando um quebra-cabeça para nós: (...) a ideia de uma técnica do pensamento. Daí, é a nossa vez de entrar na conversa, e a nossa participação se desenrola em dois momentos: (a) primeiro nós introduzimos ideias de Turing para articular a noção de um mecanismo de duas alavancas, (b) e depois nós esboçamos um entendimento da técnica do pensamento em termos desse mecanismo. O objetivo deste artigo é retomar e requalificar a distinção entre conceitos e objetos, tal como proposta por Frege, no célebre Sobre o Conceito e o Objeto (1892), reforçando sua importância para a compreensão da distinção entre dizer e mostrar, proposta pelo Wittgenstein do Tractatus. O texto também estabelece a influência da mencionada distinção para o tratamento pelo primeiro Wittgenstein dos paradoxos por impredicatividade. Retomamos então as análises de Charles Travis sobre o assunto, em: Where Words Fail (2020), levando-se em (...) conta o ponto de vista da filosofia do segundo Wittgenstein. Para Travis, o obstáculo envolvido na distinção entre conceitos e objetos não passaria de uma confusão filosófica, devendo ser ela mesma dissolvida. Os argumentos propostos por Travis são também aqui brevemente passados em revista, mas nosso foco consiste principalmente em concluir que a importância da distinção deve ser rastreada nos limites do que pode ser descrito ou definido adicionalmente, e se configura como fim das explicações na base do que constitui a determinação semântica. Neste sentido, a importância dessa distinção ultrapassaria mesmo o âmbito da influência na filosofia do primeiro Wittgenstein, e apareceria como dizendo respeito à abordagem da generalidade linguística nela mesma. Based on the distinction drawn by James Conant between Cartesian skepticism and Kantian skepticism, I intend to show that Wittgenstein’s remarks on dreaming should not be understood as a direct attack on the former, as commonly held, but as an indirect attack on it, for Wittgenstein approaches Descartes’ dreaming hypothesis by changing the very problematic at stake. Wittgenstein’s attack on skepticism takes one step back from a question about how to distinguish between dreaming that one is experiencing something and actually (...) experiencing it, for this attack focuses on the linguistic conditions of the possibility of something that the Cartesian problematic takes for granted, that is, the very possibility of saying “I am dreaming.” I also intend to show that Wittgenstein’s remarks on dreaming should be read in light of his claim that skepticism is nonsensical put forward in the Tractatus logico-philosophicus as well in his last writings. More specifically, I intend to show that the words “I am dreaming” are nonsensical in the same sense as the alleged proposition “There are physical objects” and the expression of doubt about the existence of physical objects or the external world. Arguing from inductive risk, Heather Douglas tried to show that the ideal of value-free science is completely unfounded. The argument has been widely acknowledged to be a strong argument against the ideal. In this paper, beginning with an analysis of the concept of an ideal, we argue that the value-free ideal is an epistemic ideal rather than a practical or ethical ideal. Then, we aim to show that the argument from inductive risk cannot be employed against the value-free ideal as (...) far as it is understood as an epistemic ideal. We try to show that the argument takes practical and ethical limitations of actual scientific enterprise into account to undermine the value-free ideal. But employing non-epistemic considerations makes the argument impotent against an epistemic ideal. (shrink)

The paper explores a Fregean inspired conception on what concerns the nature of logical laws. A basic idea is that logic must ‘take care of itself’, i.e., nothing topic-specific could play the role of ground for a logical law. In this Fregean mood, we’ll see as isolating logical laws requires to separate being true from taken to be true. Such a path will lead us through a discussion on the role of representation in its relation to the true and the (...) false. Logic’s proper justification (proof) concerns returning to more basic truths, but justifying such truths is something beyond its scope. According to Frege, logical laws are grounded solely on being true, which brings us back to the question about these laws’ relation to topic-specific matters, as well as their revision. (shrink)

Este artigo aborda a reação de Frege a Kant e questiona uma influente interpretação, defendida por Jim Conant, de acordo com a qual Frege subscreve os princípios essenciais da filosofia de Kant, nomeadamente a sua conceção antipsicologista avant la lettre da lógica pura. Eu defendo que existem diferenças profundas de ponto de vista entre eles, as quais alimentam o seu bem conhecido desacordo acerca da natureza da aritmética, e que a rejeição de Frege de algumas das premissas fundamentais da epistemologia (...) kantiana levou-o a uma forma bastante distinta de antipsicologismo. No centro da disputa Frege-Kant está um entendimento completamente diferente da objetividade, a qual aos olhos de Frege não pode ser concebida como uma expressão do nosso considerar algo verdadeiro, como resulta do enquadramento de Kant.
