  1. Niels Bohr's philosophy of physics.Dugald Murdoch - 1987 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
Murdoch describes the historical background of the physics from which Bohr's ideas grew; he traces the origins of his idea of complementarity and discusses its meaning and significance. Special emphasis is placed on the contrasting views of Einstein, and the great debate between Bohr and Einstein is thoroughly examined. Bohr's philosophy is revealed as being much more subtle, and more interesting than is generally acknowledged.
  2. The cartesian circle.Dugald Murdoch - 1999 - Philosophical Review 108 (2):221-244.
This paper suggests that the appearance of circularity in descartes' arguments is due to a lack of precision in his statements of them, Rather than to any flaw in his reasoning. The clear and distinct perceptions presupposed in the demonstrations of the existence of God are not the same as those whose reliability depends upon the existence of god. He is presupposing the reliability only of those clear and distinct perceptions which are known through the light of nature and have (...)

    The Cartesian Circle.Dugald Murdoch - 1999 - Philosophical Review 108 (2):221-244.
At the beginning of Meditation Three, Descartes puts forward the proposition that whatever he clearly and distinctly perceives is true. He observes, however, that so long as he does not know whether there is a deceiving God, he has reason to doubt the proposition. Later in Meditation Three, he purports to prove that there is no deceiving God. The difficulty, as Arnauld pointed out, is to see how Descartes avoids reasoning in a circle or begging the question here, for if (...)

    Bohr.Dugald Murdoch - 2017 - In W. H. Newton‐Smith (ed.), A Companion to the Philosophy of Science. Oxford, UK: Blackwell. pp. 26–30.
One of the most influential physicists of the twentieth century, Niels Bohr was born in Copenhagen on 7 October 1885, and died there on 18 November 1962. He came of a well‐to‐do, cultivated family, his father being Professor of Physiology at Copenhagen University, where Bohr himself received his education in physics. After taking his doctorate in 1911, Bohr went to Cambridge University to continue his research on the theory of electrons under Sir J. J. Thomson. After several months in Cambridge, (...)

The Sovereignty of Good.Iris Murdoch - 1970 - New York,: Routledge.
Iris Murdoch was one of the great philosophers and novelists of the twentieth century and The Sovereignty of Good is her most important and enduring philosophical work. She argues that philosophy has focused, mistakenly, on what it is right to do rather than good to be and that only by restoring the notion of ‘vision’ to moral thinking can this distortion be corrected. This brilliant work shows why Iris Murdoch remains essential reading: a vivid and uncompromising style, a (...)

The Sovereignty of Good.Iris Murdoch - 1970 - New York,: Routledge.
Iris Murdoch once observed: 'philosophy is often a matter of finding occasions on which to say the obvious'. What was obvious to Murdoch, and to all those who read her work, is that Good transcends everything - even God. Throughout her distinguished and prolific writing career, she explored questions of Good and Bad, myth and morality. The framework for Murdoch's questions - and her own conclusions - can be found here.

Stem Cell Tourism and the Power of Hope.Charles E. Murdoch - 2010 - American Journal of Bioethics 10 (5):16-23.
This paper explores the notions of hope and how individual patient autonomy can trump carefully reasoned ethical concerns and policies intended to regulate stem cell transplants. We argue that the same limits of knowledge that inform arguments to restrain and regulate unproven treatments might also undermine our ability to comprehensively dismiss or condemn them. Incautiously or indiscriminately reasoned policies and attitudes may drive critical information and data underground, impel patients away from working with clinical researchers, and tread needlessly on hope, (...)

Pseudofinite structures and simplicity.Darío García, Dugald Macpherson & Charles Steinhorn - 2015 - Journal of Mathematical Logic 15 (1):1550002.
We explore a notion of pseudofinite dimension, introduced by Hrushovski and Wagner, on an infinite ultraproduct of finite structures. Certain conditions on pseudofinite dimension are identified that guarantee simplicity or supersimplicity of the underlying theory, and that a drop in pseudofinite dimension is equivalent to forking. Under a suitable assumption, a measure-theoretic condition is shown to be equivalent to local stability. Many examples are explored, including vector spaces over finite fields viewed as 2-sorted finite structures, and homocyclic groups. Connections are (...)
