‘Be Angry But Do Not Sin’ (Ephesians 4:26a): Sin and the Emotions in the New Testament with Special Reference to Anger.Stephen C. Barton - 2015 - Studies in Christian Ethics 28 (1):21-34.
A presupposition of this essay is that a Christian understanding of sin should give attention to the emotions. Taking anger as a case in point, an account is offered of the paraenēsis in Eph. 4:26 where anger and sin are juxtaposed. The main argument is that the teaching about anger has to be situated in relation to the moral-theological vision of Ephesians as a whole, central to which is the coming together as one of Jews and Gentiles in the Church. Teach Me What I Do Not See: Lessons for the Church From a Global Pandemic.James C. Wilhoit, Siang Yang Tan, Diane J. Chandler, Richard Peace, Ruth Haley Barton, Kelly M. Kapic & Steven L. Porter - 2021 - Journal of Spiritual Formation and Soul Care 14 (1):7-30.
In an attempt to learn from COVID-19, this essay features six responses to the question: what did COVID-19 teach us, expose in us, or purge out of us when it comes to spiritual formation in Christ? Each response was written independently of the others by one of the coauthors. Diane J. Chandler focuses in on how COVID-19 exposed grievous inequities for ethnic groups in the American church and broader society. Kelly M. Kapic reminds us of the goodness of human finitude (...)

    The Gut Microbiota–Brain Axis Expands Neurologic Function: A Nervous Rapport.Kylynda C. Bauer, Tobias Rees & Barton Brett Finlay - 2019 - Bioessays 41 (10):1800268.
Does exploration of the gut microbiota–brain axis expand our understanding of what it means to be human? Recognition and conceptualization of a gut microbiota–brain axis challenges our study of the nervous system. Here, integrating gut microbiota–brain research into the metaorganism model is proposed. The metaorganism—an expanded, dynamic unit comprising the host and commensal organisms—asserts a radical blurring between man and microbe. The metaorganism nervous system interacts with the exterior world through microbial‐colored lenses. Ongoing studies have reported that gut microbes contribute (...)

    The "Theaetetus" on How We Think.David Barton - 1999 - Phronesis 44 (3):163 - 180.
I argue that Plato's purpose in the discussion of false belief in the "Theaetetus" is to entertain and then to reject the idea that thinking is a kind of mental grasping. The interpretation allows us to make good sense of Plato's discussion of 'other-judging' (189c-190e), of his remarks about mathematical error (195d-196c), and most importantly, of the initial statement of the puzzle about falsity (188a-c). That puzzle shows that if we insist on conceiving of the relation between thought and its (...)

Multiple Faiths in Postcolonial Cities: Living Together After Empire.Jonathan Dunn, Heleen Joziasse, Raj Bharat Patta, Helena Mary Kettleborough, Phil Barton, Elaine Bishop, Terry Biddington, C. I. David Joy, Esther Mombo, Chris Shannahan & Peter Manley Scott - 2019 - Springer Verlag.
This book addresses the challenges of living together after empire in many post-colonial cities. It is organized in two sections. The first section focuses on efforts by people of multiple faiths to live together within their contexts, including such efforts within a neighborhood in urban Manchester; the array of attempts at creating multi-faith spaces for worship across the globe; and initiatives to commemorate divisive conflict together in Northern Ireland. The second section utilizes particular postcolonial methods to illuminate pressing issues within (...)

Walking Speed Reliably Measures Clinically Significant Changes in Gait by Directional Deep Brain Stimulation.Christopher P. Hurt, Daniel J. Kuhman, Barton L. Guthrie, Carla R. Lima, Melissa Wade & Harrison C. Walker - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 14.
Introduction: Although deep brain stimulation often improves levodopa-responsive gait symptoms, robust therapies for gait dysfunction from Parkinson's disease remain a major unmet need. Walking speed could represent a simple, integrated tool to assess DBS efficacy but is often not examined systematically or quantitatively during DBS programming. Here we investigate the reliability and functional significance of changes in gait by directional DBS in the subthalamic nucleus. Methods: Nineteen patients underwent unilateral subthalamic nucleus DBS surgery with an eight-contact directional lead in the most (...)

  42. Peacocke’s Epiphany: A Possible Problem for Semantic Approaches to Metaphysical Necessity.Jon Barton - 2012 - Philosophia Scientiae 16 (2):99-116.
In his _Being Known_ Peacocke sets himself the task of answering how we come to know about metaphysical necessities. He proposes a semantic principle-based conception consisting of, first, his Principles of Possibility which provide necessary and sufficient conditions for a new concept 'admissibility', and second, characterizations of possibility and of necessity in terms of that new concept. I focus on one structural feature; viz. the recursive application involved in the specification of 'admissibility'. After sketching Peacocke’s proposal, I introduce a fictional (...)
