Wilhelm Windelband (1848-1915) est le fondateur de l'ecole de Heidelberg, l'autre grand courant neokantien qui apparait au meme moment que l'ecole de Marbourg, et dont Heinrich Rickert et Emil Lask furent des representants eminents. C'est Windelband qui pose les fondements de la philosophie des valeurs qui caracterise le neokantisme de Heidelberg. Ce volume presente un choix d'opuscules, qui relevent essentiellement de la philosophie de la connaissance, fondement de toute investigation philosophique pour les neokantiens. C'est en effet sur une analyse logique (...) des processus cognitifs que sont fondes non seulement l'assimilation de la verite a une valeur - sans pour autant que la verite se dissolve, car Windelband et les autres membres son ecole cherchent a fonder la transcendance de la valeur et donc a sauvegarder la verite comme telle -, mais aussi la theorie de la science qui distigue la methode nomothetique des sciences exactes de la methode idiographique propre a l'histoire. "Der geschichtliche Sinn, welcher schon das Altertum auszeichnete, bewahrte sich auch auf unserm Gebiete, und es hat schon in fruher Zeit nicht an Versuchen gefehlt, den Entwicklungsgang des Wissens bis zu einem gewissen Termine zu schildern. Nach Diogenes von Laerte, einem freilich nicht immer vollig zuverlassigen Gewahrsmann, hat schon ein Schuler des Aristoteles, der als Naturforscher bekanntere Theophrast, Geschichtswerke uber Arithmetik, Geometrie und Astronomie verfasst, von denen sich jedoch hochstens insofern eine Spur erhalten hat, als nach den ausgezeichneten Untersuchungen von (...) Diels bei einer ganzen Reihe spatlateinischer und spatgriechischer Autoren Anklange an historische Angaben Theophrasts zu finden sind. Ahnliches gilt von der angeblich geometrischen Schrift des Xenokrates, deren ebenfalls Diogenes Erwahnung tut." [...] Der bedeutende Philosoph und Philosophiehistoriker Dr. Wilhelm Windelband (1848-1915) gilt als Begrunder der sudwestdeutschen Schule (auch Badische Schule ), die eine Richtung des Neukantianismus darstellt. Windelbands Hauptaugenmerk galt der Abgrenzung von Natur- und Kulturwissenschaften. Sein wichtigster Schuler war Heinrich Rickert. Sigmund Gunther lebte von 1848 - 1923 und gilt als einer der wichtigsten Mathematikhistoriker. Er wurde mit der Dissertation "Studien zu theoretischen Photometrie" promoviert. In dem vorliegenden Werk gehen beide Autoren ausfuhrlich auf die geschichtlichen Hintergrunde der Naturwissenschaften und der Philosophie ein. Das Buch erschien ursprunglich als funfter Band im "Handbuch der klassischen Altertums-Wissenschaft" und wurde 1888 erstmals veroffentlicht. Der Verlag der Wissenschaften verlegt historische Literatur bekannter und unbekannter wissenschaftlicher Autoren. Dem interessierten Leser werden so teilweise langst nicht mehr verlegte Werke wieder zugangig gemacht. Das vorliegende Buch ist ein unveranderter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe.". (shrink)

En revendiquant le rôle méthodologique fondateur de la philosophie, dans ce célèbre Discours de 1894, très cité dans le cadre du « Débat sur l'historicisme », Windelband procède à une remise en perspective des théories de la connaissance en place à son époque. En polémiquant tout à la fois avec les philosophies positivistes et avec Dilthey, en critiquant notamment l'opposition établie par celui-ci entre Sciences de l'Esprit et Sciences de la Nature, Windelband défend ici l'idée que les sciences contemporaines demandent (...) à être différenciées non pas sur la base de leur objet spécifique (l'esprit ou la nature), mais de leur méthode d'approche des objets, méthode qui varie selon qu'elle soit généralisante (ou nomothétique) ou singularisante (ou idiographique). In his famous Address of 1894 — often cited within the contextual framework of the so-called « Debate on historicism » —, Windelband asserts the methodological and founding role of philosophy. He sets about putting into perspective the theories of knowledge that were current at the time. In arguing with both the positivistic philosophies and Dilthey, notably in criticizing the opposition brought about by the latter between « Sciences of the Mind » and « Sciences of Nature », Windelband champions here the idea that contemporary sciences have to be differentiated not on the basis of their specific object (mind, or nature), but on the basis of their method of approach of these objects — a method that varies, depending on whether it is totalizing (or nomothetic) or singularizing (or ideographic). Wilhelm Windelband présente l’œuvre de Bergson comme issue de la tradition française qui consiste à dériver une métaphysique entière de la réflexion sur l’expérience intérieure. Il la considère comme une critique de la domination des sciences exactes sur la philosophie. Étant centrée sur l’événement, la pensée de Bergson illustre l’importance des sciences de l’esprit, contre les sciences de la nature, et participe du mouvement de revalorisation des sciences historiques. Matière et mémoire montre que la conscience est d’abord orientée vers l’action (...) et non vers la connaissance. Et toute la philosophie moderne est volontariste dans la mesure où elle a pour principe qu’il y a du nouveau dans le monde.Wilhelm Windelband presents Bergson’s work as issued from the French tradition which consists in deriving a whole metaphysics from the interior experience itself. He considers it as a criticism of the domination of exact sciences over philosophy. Being centered on the event, Bergson’s thought illustrates the importance of the sciences of the mind, against the sciences of nature and becomes part and parcel of the enhanced prestige granted to historical sciences. Matter & Memory shows that conscience is first and foremost oriented towards action and not towards knowledge.
