Sexual selection provides an adequate partial explanation for the difference in means between the distributions, but fails to explain the difference in variance, that is, the overrepresentation of both boys with outstanding mathematical reasoning ability and boys with mental retardation. Other genetic factors are probably at work. While spatial ability is correlated with OMRA, so are other cognitive abilities. There is a problem with the definition of talent as presented by Howe et al. that makes it dependent on experts' ability to detect it in the untrained. In addition, the choice of musical performance as the example for innate talent is inappropriate, and musical board results are selective and biased tests of it. Outstanding mathematical reasoning ability offers much better evidence of genetic influence.

A novel social interaction is a dynamic process, in which participants adapt to, react to and engage with their social partners. To facilitate such interactions, people gather information relating to the social context and structure of the situation. The current study aimed to deepen the understanding of the psychological determinants of behavior in a novel social interaction. Three social robots and the participant interacted non-verbally according to a pre-programmed “relationship matrix” that dictated who favored whom. Participants' gaze was tracked during (...) the interaction and, using Bayesian inference models, resulted in a measure of participants' social information-gathering behaviors. Our results reveal the dynamics in a novel environment, wherein information-gathering behavior is initially predicted by psychological inflexibility and then, toward the end of the interaction, predicted by curiosity. The Fibromyalgia Survey Questionnaire was self-administered by a sample of 207 Italian individuals with obesity to screen for fibromyalgia. We aimed to investigate the inter-rater reliability and the agreement in the detection of FM symptomatology between the self-administered FSQ and the clinical interview conducted by a rheumatologist. All the patients were divided randomly into two groups : a rheumatologist first interviewed patients of group A and after 48 h, the patients completed the self-report FSQ. Patients of group B first completed (...) the FSQ and 48 h later were interviewed by a rheumatologist. The agreement between the measurements was good with the Bland-Altman analysis showing low bias scores for the two subscales of the FSQ. Results showed that 33% of the sample satisfied the criteria for a diagnosis of fibromyalgia. The FSQ is a self-reporting measure that showed substantial reliability providing fast screening for FM symptomatology. (shrink)

Le XXe siecle a ete caracterise par l'essor de l'hermeneutique philosophique. Il est temps de proposer un bilan de ces elaborations et de projeter les possibles evolutions de l'hermeneutique au XXIe siecle. Le present volume s'attelle a cette tache: il retrace les chemins de l'hermeneutique, de Wilhelm Dilthey a Michel Foucault. Il met en evidence un phenomene de diversification de l'hermeneutique en l'espece de trois courants prioritaires, dont les divergences de vue ont donne lieu a des debats. D'ailleurs, pour etre (...) feconde, l'hermeneutique a venir aura grand interet a conserver la forme du debat. Le present volume reunit les contributions de chercheurs qui representent des domaines varies de la recherche en sciences humaines: la philosophie, l'histoire de la philosophie, la philologie, l'histoire de l'art, l'anthropologie culturelle et la jurisprudence. La premiere partie est consacree au debat autour de l'hermeneutique philosophique; elle reunit les contributions de J. Grondin, R. Celis et J. Greisch d'une part, de H. Ineichen, H. Kramer et O. Scholz d'autre part. Les theses de l'hermeneutique philosophique sont presentees et soumises a un examen critique. Dans la deuxieme partie, on suit les voies sur lesquelles cheminent aujourd'hui les hermeneutiques des sciences humaines interessees a des objets particuliers: les textes abordes par la philologie ou par l'histoire de la philosophie, les images etudiees par l'histoire de l'art, les structures sociales qui sont les objets de l'anthropologie culturelle, ou encore les normes de la societe qui interessent les juristes. This paper chronicles the author’s experience, as an instructor and as an administrator, taking up the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and implementing changes in the curriculum to accommodate a logic student with dyslexia. The author discusses his misconceptions about dyslexia and his attempts to determine more precisely how it affected his student’s reading abilities. While his student struggled with abstract symbol systems (e.g. standard logical notation), the student had no difficulty with sequences of letters. The author elected to teach (...) the introductory logic course with a logical notation composed entirely of letters, namely Lukasiewicz’ notation. The author details the work that went into learning this notation and teaching an introductory logic course in it, including overviews of lessons on semantics, syntax, and introduction/elimination rules for proofs. The student learned the material very quickly and with great success, progressing to moderately sophisticated proofs. The author reflects on how this reformulated version of an introductory logic course squares with the ADA’s language of “reasonable accommodations” and implores professional philosophers to take seriously what the ADA means for their pedagogy.
