The human face conveys a myriad of social meanings within an overlapping array of features. Herein, we examine such features within the context of gender-emotion stereotypes. First we detail the pervasive set of gender-emotion expectations known to exist. We then review new research revealing that gender cues and emotion expression often share physical properties that represent a confound of overlapping features characteristic of low versus high facial maturity/dominance. As such, gender-related facial appearance and facial expression of emotions often share social (...) meaning and physical resemblance. Thus, stereotypic and phenotypic information conveyed by the face are intertwined—sometimes confounded, sometimes clashing. We discuss implications of this work for gender-emotion stereotypes, as well as for emotion and face processing more generally. (shrink)

As a key concept in the social sciences, alienation refers to various mental states, often identified by such terms as ?powerlessness?, ?meaninglessness?, ?anomic?, etc. Recent advances in sociological theory permit us to indicate systematically the social conditions linked to these states. A simple though exhaustive typology of the social sources of alienation? is here presented. To illustrate the typology, examples of alienation are drawn from the writings of classical and contemporary social theorists.

Functional analysis is the major theoretical perspective of contemporary sociology. Although many fruitful studies of social structure have resulted from the application of this perspective, it has been notably sterile in coping with questions of social change. Two major shortcomings of the functionalist view of change are here examined. The first type of shortcoming might be called 'evolutionary hangovers'. Under this heading we may include 'functional ahistoricism' and a 'commitment to progress'. The second major shortcoming refers to weaknesses of functional (...) theory per se — namely, a confusion of causal analysis with functional analysis, a lack of a theory of deviance, and an over-emphasis on stable equilibrium models. This edition of Studia Gilsoniana inaugurates submission of articles on economic science based upon pre-modern principles of philosophy/science. Today, many journals address the intersection of economics and philosophy. Their contributors include practicing economists, economic historians, economist-philosophers, philosopher-economists, and economic methodologists. Research in this interdisciplinary field began to appear in the 1970s and later took shape in the 1980s with the appearance of its specialized academic journals. Today, the intersection of economics and philosophy is a vibrant area of inquiry and research. (...) Books and journal pages are replete with references to classical philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle and their contributions to economic science. However, stronger connections need to be made related to the application of economic principles from the past to the present based upon enduring pre-modern principles of science. The response to the special 2019 issue of Studia Gilsoniana on economics was so positive that it led to the creation of the Aquinas School of Leadership School of Economics (ASLSE). This 2021 publication is, therefore, a second special issue of Studia Gilsoniana on the same theme and the second installment of ASLSE’s economic journals. We are delighted to present here further fruits of thought from the maturing Studia Gilsoniana and ASLSE partnership. Economics is held to be a value-free, scientific (...) enterprise, and as such there can be no relationship between economics and religion. Ayn Rand, a well-known novelist-turned-philosopher, took this position in an unapologetic way in her writings, specifically in her novel Atlas Shrugged. The contrary position to what we might call the Randian “strict separation” thesis holds that economics and religion are related, in some way and to some degree, and therefore should be considered in tandem. The papers in this special edition of Studia Gilsoniana set out to show the extent and quality of the relationship between economics and religion from a variety of viewpoints and historical periods. As intergenerational interactions increase due to an ageing population, the study of emotion-related responses to the elderly is increasingly relevant. Previous research found mixed results regarding affective mimicry – a measure related to liking and affiliation. In the current study, we investigated emotional mimicry to younger and older actors following an encounter with a younger and older player in a Cyberball game. In a complete exclusion condition, in which both younger and older players excluded the participant, we expected emotional mimicry (...) to be stronger for younger vs. older actors. In a partial inclusion condition, in which the younger player excluded while the older player included the participant, we predicted that the difference in player behaviour would lead to a difference in liking. This increased liking of the older interaction partner should reduce the difference in emotional mimicry towards the two different age groups. Results revealed more mimicry for older actors following partial inclusion especially for negative emotions, suggesting inclusive behaviour by an older person in an interaction as a possible means to increase mimicry and affiliation to the elderly. Social exclusion influences how expressions are perceived and the tendency of the perceiver to mimic them. However, less is known about social exclusion’s effect on one’s own facial expressions. The aim of the present study was to identify the effects of social exclusion on Duchenne smiling behaviour, defined as activity of both zygomaticus major and the orbicularis oculi muscles. Utilising a within-subject’s design, participants took part in the Cyberball Task in which they were both included and excluded while facial electromyography (...) was measured. We found that during the active experience of social exclusion, participants showed greater orbicularis oculi activation when compared to the social inclusion condition. Further, we found that across both conditions, participants showed greater zygomaticus major muscle activation the longer they engaged in the Cyberball Task. Order of condition also mattered, with those who experienced social exclusion before social inclusion showing the greatest overall muscle activation. These results are consistent with an affiliative function of smiling, particularly as social exclusion engaged activation of muscles associated with a Duchenne smile. (shrink)

Es wird zu zeigen versucht, daß die Unterscheidung logischer und faktischer Wahrheiten nicht gelingen kann, solange nicht zwei Arten von Existenz unterschieden werden, nämlich logische Existenz als Widerspruchsfreiheit und faktische als an Ort und Zeit gebundene Existenz. Die Vernachlässigung der Bedingungen von Ort und Zeit führt dazu, daß z. B. Leibniz, Frege und Russell die faktische Wahrheit auf die logische zurückführen, was wiederum dadurch begünstigt wird, daß die genannten Autoren Individuum und Einermenge nicht konsequent unterscheiden. Die Unterscheidung logischer und faktischer (...) Wahrheiten ist aber zugleich wichtigster Bestandteil des empiristischen Sinnkriteriums der logischen Empiristen. Der Streit zwischen Carnap und Quine über die Unterscheidbarkeit analytischer und synthetischer Sätze war daher zugleich ein Streit um die Unterscheidbarkeit logischer und faktischer Wahreiten. Da aber weder Quine noch Carnap bereit waren, Voraussetzungen ontologischer Art zu machen, und sie daher Wahrheit auf Beweisbarkeit sowie auf den richtigen Gebrauch einer Sprache zurückführten, wurden auch für sie Individuum und Einermenge und damit auch logische und faktische Wahrheiten ununterscheidbar. Daher kommen beiden trotz ursprünglich gegensätzlicher Auffassungen zu sehr ähnlichen Ergebnissen. Während Quine nämlich die logische Wahrheit auf die faktische zurückführt und Wissenschaft für ihn nichts weiter ist als mit Erfahrung verknüpfte Gedankenkonstruktion, führt Carnap ganz im Sinne von Leibniz die faktische Wahrheit auf die logische, nämlich auf Widerspruchsfreiheit zurück, so daß die gesamte Erfahrungswelt für ihn nichts weiter ist als eine aus Grundelementen rational konstruierbare Welt des sinnlichen Scheins. Wenn faktische Wahrheit aber mehr ist als nur Widerspruchsfreiheit und Deduzierbarkeit, dann muß die Wahrheit von unabhängigen Atomsätzen anerkannt werden, deren Wahrheit nicht mit rein innersprachlichen Mitteln gesichert werden kann, sondern durch die Existenz außersprachlicher individueller Objekte abgestützt werden muß; denn Individuelles läßt sich in seiner Individualität nicht aus allgemeinen Gesetzen herleiten. Ein Wahrheitsbegriff, der dies leistet, findet sich bei Bernard Bolzano, der dafür die Annahme einer dritten Welt, einer Welt möglicher Intensionen, benötigte. Daß solch eine Annahme keine unnötige Vervielfältigung von Entitäten bedeutet, wird deutlich an den Schwierigkeiten, die für Wittgenstein dadurch entstanden, daß er einerseits mit Freges Theorie vom Sinn sprachlicher Zeichen eine semantische Grundlage sprachlicher Zeichen anerkannte, zugleich aber einen nominalistischen Standpunkt vertrat, indem er nur Namen, nicht aber Sätzen eine Bezeichnungsfunktion zuerkannte. Bolzanos Theorie von den zwei Arten der Existenz und der durch sie begründeten Arten von Wahrheiten bedarf jedoch einer Ergänzung und einer begrifflichen Analyse dessen, was unter "Sachverhalt", "Tatsache", "Faktum", "Ereignis" und "Individuum" zu verstehen ist, was einer späteren Arbeit vorbehalten bleiben soll. On the basis of the above predicates, the Meinongian definition of lying (the three-place predicate L - "to lie") will be given, together with another definition of a speech act (the three-place (...) predicate S - "to say"). It is not intended to give a ready formal system, but rather to show that such a system is possible to construct. The proposal which will be presented with the application of formal tools and which has Meinongian style is open for different interpretations: one of the directions is logic of intentions, another one - theory of speech-acts. Der nichtdistributive, orthokomplementäre Verband der Projektionsoperatoren in der Quantenmechanik hat Anlaß zu mancherlei Interpretationen gegeben, so z. B. als eine von der klassischen Logik abweichende Quantenlogik, oder man deutete die Projektionsoperatoren als Eigenschaften von Mikroobjekten. Wir glauben, mit dieser Arbeit ein wesentliches Argument für die letztere Interpretation liefern zu können: Es ist nämlich möglich, in der Menge der Eigenschaftsbegriffe ℐ eine Ordnungsrelation einzuführen. Mit dieser Ordnungsrelation bildet ℐ einen nichtdistributiven, orthokomplementären Verband. D.h. bei einer solchen Interpretation werden keinerlei Veränderungen - (...) weder im Verband der Aussagen noch im Verband der Eigenschaftsbegriffe - durch die Entdeckung der Quantenmechanik notwendig.
