    L' Abrégé de l'Almageste: un inédit d'Averroès en version hébraïque.Juliane Lay - 1996 - Arabic Sciences and Philosophy 6 (1):23-61.

This piece, included in the drift special issue of continent. , was created as one step in a thread of inquiry. While each of the contributions to drift stand on their own, the project was an attempt to follow a line of theoretical inquiry as it passed through time and the postal service(s) from October 2012 until May 2013. This issue hosts two threads: between space & place and between intention & attention . The editors recommend that to experience the (...)

Bandersnatch.Chris Lay & David Kyle Johnson - 2019 - In David Kyle Johnson (ed.), Black Mirror and Philosophy. Hoboken, NJ, USA: Wiley. pp. 197–238.
Bandersnatch is a unique piece of television. Like the eponymous choose your own adventure book at the center of its winding narrative, the episode lets the viewer actively make choices that shape the direction of the story. In this same spirit, we present this chapter in an equally novel way: as a collection of miniature essays on a dozen or so philosophical topics, loosely bound together. Just as in the episode, the reader's choices will determine the philosophical path she takes (...)

Don’t Look Up as Philosophy: Comets, Climate Change, and Why the Snacks Are Not Free.Chris Lay & David Kyle Johnson - 2022 - In David Kyle Johnson (ed.), The Palgrave Handbook of Popular Culture as Philosophy. Palgrave-Macmillan. pp. 1373-1409.
Don’t Look Up is a 2021 Netflix original film about two astronomers who discover a 9-kilometer “planet killer” comet on a collision course with Earth. The way humanity responds to this threat – which is less than ideal, given that the movie ends with humanity’s destruction – is supposed to be an allegory for how humanity is dealing with the real-world threat of climate change. Consequently, we argue, the movie is an argument that presents the viewer with a moral imperative: (...)

No Man Needs Nothing.Chris Lay - 2017-06-23 - In Jeffrey Ewing & Kevin S. Decker (eds.), Alien and Philosophy. Wiley. pp. 5–16.
Most people probably take it for granted that “human beings” and what philosophers and lawyers call “persons” are one and the same thing. The picture of a person get from Locke is of an intelligent, rational, self‐reflective, and emotional being. Anything that can have all of these features must count as a Lockean person. The human characters of the Alien franchise do seem to have all of these characteristics. This chapter explains that there are a couple of ways to determine (...)

Facing Disaster: Ordinary Fictions, Resilience, and the Demand for Recognition in Eastern DR Congo.Maëline Le Lay - 2023 - Open Philosophy 6 (1):202-22.
In DR Congo, there is a proliferation of fictions and spoken word texts that addresses aspects of the on-going conflict. Fiction in Congo does not concern itself with the rules of literary orthodoxy (verisimilitude, linguistic correctness, references), nor does it rely on the existence of a literary and editorial system that is structured and operating to guarantee a predetermined readership. Its main objective is to express emotions in an aesthetic way that touches the hearts of readers and spectators. However, the (...)

    Introduction.David Lay Williams - 2021 - European Journal of Political Theory 20 (3):568-574.
This introduction to the review symposium on Ryan Patrick Hanley’s works on the relatively neglected early modern philosopher François Fénelon provides a brief overview of the symposium itself before turning to Hanley’s treatment of Fénelon’s work on the intersection of politics and religion, culminating in a comparison of Fénelon with his most celebrated admirer, Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The article sketches how both francophone thinkers employ conceptions of divine justice as a measure to counter the dangers of amour-propre, contrasting Fénelon’s thick theology (...)

Exploring the Gap Between Consumers’ Green Rhetoric and Purchasing Behaviour.Micael-Lee Johnstone & Lay Peng Tan - 2015 - Journal of Business Ethics 132 (2):311-328.
Why do consumers who profess to be concerned about the environment choose not to buy greener products more regularly or even at all? This study explores how consumers’ perceptions towards green products, consumers and consumption practices contribute to our understanding of the discrepancy between green attitudes and behaviour. This study identified several barriers to ethical consumption behaviour within a green consumption context. Three key themes emerged from the study, ‘it is too hard to be green’, ‘green stigma’ and ‘green reservations’. (...)
