    Methods and Criteria of Reasoning. [REVIEW]W. S. L. - 1958 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (3):513-513.
This work, written well within the tradition of contemporary British analysis, attempts to cope with the question of why most philosophical problems, as well as many problems concerning the foundations of the sciences, have not yet been laid to rest. The author holds that most of these problems could be disposed of simply by stating the problem in such a way as would clearly indicate the means or lack of means by which the statement could be tested. --W. On Being Human. [REVIEW]L. W. S. - 1973 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (2):405-406.
This book, originally published in Germany in 1951 under the title Menschlichkeit, is a religious reading of human nature culminating in the assertion that, "The ultimate meaning of man can belong only to his relationship to the absolute, the relation which he has to God." Inspired by Fichte, and emphasizing the unity of Kant’s three critiques which together address the "lived" human experience, the author attempts to address the "whole" man, not only his intellect, his objectivity or his historicity. This (...)

  6. Welfare, happiness, and ethics.L. W. Sumner - 1996 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Moral philosophers agree that welfare matters. But they disagree about what it is, or how much it matters. In this vital new work, Wayne Sumner presents an original theory of welfare, investigating its nature and discussing its importance. He considers and rejects all notable theories of welfare, both objective and subjective, including hedonism and theories founded on desire or preference. His own theory connects welfare closely with happiness or life satisfaction. Reacting against the value pluralism that currently dominates moral philosophy, (...)

    Essence et Existence. [REVIEW]S. L. W. - 1958 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (3):517-518.
An "Essai sur la philosophie de Nikolai Hartmann et Roman Ingarden," this book presents a critical comparison of the ontologies of two unduly neglected philosophical descendents of Husserl. Offers a good general introduction to Hartmann and Ingarden as well as a treatment of the basic problems of ontology.--W. S. L.

  13. George Berkeley: Lectures delivered before the Philosophical Union of the University of California. [REVIEW]S. L. W. - 1957 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (2):354-354.
A collection of lectures given in commemoration of the bicentennial of Berkeley's death, this work bears testimony to a renewed interest in his philosophy. The basic tenets of Berkelian idealism are defended as possessing contemporary validity and tenability, and Berkeley is shown to have anticipated much of present day philosophy. -- W. S. L.

Two brief essays, one on ethics, the other on beliefs, are presented in the form of short allegories and connecting comments. The approach is that of contemporary British analysis, and the style has a refreshing novelty. Several Thurber-like cartoons and a "Somatic Sonata" complete this brief volume.--W. S. L.

    Love in the Western World. [REVIEW]S. L. W. - 1957 - Review of Metaphysics 10 (3):544-545.
A consideration of one of the perennial paradoxes of Western society, which upholds monogamous marriage as the ethical norm, and yet is forever fascinated by romantic passion outside of marriage. The treatment of this fascination by the medieval legend of Tristan and Iseult, and the subsequent reappearance of this legend or its theme in Western literature down to the present, is examined. A theory of the eros-agape dichotomy is developed. The author concludes that the appeal of extra-attachment is illusory.--W. S. (...)

    La source des Valeurs. [REVIEW]S. L. W. - 1957 - Review of Metaphysics 11 (2):351-351.
The first volume of a projected trilogy on the problem of value, this essay advances two main theses: that liberty is the necessary precondition for all value, and that values arise out of intersubjective relationships. In these relationships there is a dialectical movement enabling values to transcend their original subjective natures and become progressively objectified. --W. S. L.

Hegel’s basic position so far on the various meanings of evil as necessary and thereby intelligible directly in the development of spirit might be summed up as follows. Evil is always a necessary moment of instability which gives impetus in the movement from various meanings of particularity to various meanings of universality; from the more abstract expression of potential unity and truth to the more actualized notion and unity.

  19. Hegel’s System and the Necessity and Intelligibility of Evil, Part I.S. J. W. L. Lacroix - 1971 - Idealistic Studies 1 (1):47-64.
Hegel attempts both to give evil its metaphysical due and to give it intelligibility within a processive idealistic system. To accomplish these ends, he consistently employs the contrast between the natural and the free act of the subject and the contrast between the particular and the universal. He places these contrasts within the situation of an original and presupposed unity of spirit that itself is the ground of the mediation required for thinking freedom, for evil, and for ultimate reconciliation. He (...)

    Adventures of the Dialectic. [REVIEW]L. W. S. - 1974 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (4):804-804.
This book, which is thematically linked with Humanism and Terror, marks another of Merleau-Ponty’s attempts to come to grips with Marxism. Adventures presents reflections on the struggle between the proletariat and the Party for a valid revolutionary praxis. The question for Merleau-Ponty is, are we to conceive the revolution as a spontaneous, necessary uprising of the proletariat, in which case the Party is superfluous; or is the proletariat the tool of the Party, in which case the Party is superior and (...)

Animal liberationists tend to divide into two mutually antagonistic camps: animal welfarists, who share a utilitarian moral outlook, and animal rightists, who presuppose a structure of basic rights. However, the gap between these groups tends to be exaggerated by their allegiance to oversimplified versions of their favored moral frameworks. For their part, animal rightists should acknowledge that rights, however basic, are also defeasible by appeals to consequences. Contrariwise, animal welfarists should recognize that rights, however derivative, are capable of constraining appeals (...)

    Tragic Wisdom and Beyond. [REVIEW]L. W. S. - 1973 - Review of Metaphysics 27 (2):403-404.
This wide-ranging collection of recent addresses and essays, collected in 1968, is published together with "Conversations between Paul Ricoeur and Gabriel Marcel," which appeared in the same year. Tragic Wisdom contains fourteen essays all loosely connected about "The Questioning of Being," originally presented to the Société française de philosophie in 1958. Peripheral essays, which Marcel likens to currents crisscrossing a magnetic field, explore philosophy, humanism, truth, freedom, life, death, evil, atheism, philosophical passion, and tragic wisdom. Throughout there is an effort (...)

This study empirically examines the association between certain director characteristics and the extent of voluntary audit committee disclosure in annual reports. Results suggest that Singapore's publicly traded firms are more likely to voluntarily disclose audit committee related information as: the number of board members increases; different individuals occupy the roles of CEO and board chairperson; and the proportion of independent directors serving on the board increases. Findings, however, fail to show any association between the amount of voluntary audit committee disclosure (...)

© 2014 Taylor Francis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine human immunodeficiency virus testing of every client presenting for services in venues where HIV prevalence is high. Because older adults have particularly poor prognosis if they receive their diagnosis late in the course of HIV disease, any screening provided to younger adults in these venues should also be provided to older adults. We examined aging-related disparities in recent and ever HIV testing in a probability sample of at-risk (...)

As a distinct academic subdiscipline medical ethics is only about fifteen years old, but during that brief lifespan it has managed to generate a literature so vast that only specialists and speedreaders can now hope to keep up with more than a small fraction of it. When a literature has achieved this density new contributions must bear the burden of showing that they advance the existing state of the art. Eike-Henner W. Kluge's book joins a well-established continuing debate on the (...)

I am deeply indebted to Tom Hurka and David Copp for the careful attention they have given to some of the central motifs in The Moral Foundation of Rights. By doing their job so well they have simplified mine considerably. Their exposition of my views is a model of fairness and accuracy; I need therefore waste no time disclaiming attributions or complaining about misrepresentation. Furthermore, they have shown admirable resolve in choosing to ignore the book's relatively peripheral concerns, even when (...)

This is a book built round an argument. Several variants of the argument are offered, and I shall consider but one of them. It is directed against the following act utilitarian principle:AU: An act is right if and only if it would have best consequences The argument may be freely rendered as follows. Suppose that we have an agent, Smith, in a society, S, such that the following conditions are satisfied:C1: Smith accepts AU and attempts always to act in accordance (...)
