How Galileo Galilei discovered the law of fall, and the difference that this makes Galileo’s law of fall is one of the crucial building blocks of classical mechanics. The question how this law was discovered has often been a topic of debate. This article offers a reconstruction of the developments within Galileo’s research that led to the discovery of the law. This reconstruction is offered to make a philosophical point regarding the epistemic status of experimental results: (...)’s experiments can offer sufficient justification for the acceptance of the law of fall only because of their place in a broad research programme. 7. Galileo Galilei, Holland and the pendulum clock.Filip A. A. Buyse - 2017 - O Que Nos Faz Pensar 26 (41):9-43.
The pendulum clock was one of the most important metaphors for early modern philosophers. Christiaan Huygens (1629-1695) discovered his pendulum clock in 1656 based on the principle of isochronism discovered by Galileo (1564-1642). This paper aims at exploring the broad historical context of this invention, showing the role of some key figures such as Andreas Colvius (1594-1671), Elia Diodati (1576-1661), Hugo Grotius (1583-1645) and Constantijn Huygens, the father of Christiaan Huygens. Secondly, it suggests - based on this context - (...)

Galileo Galilei’s De motu antiquiora. The Launch of the Filosofo-Geometra’s Career.Raymond Fredette - 2017 - Philosophia Scientiae 21:55-70.

Galileo Galilei and the centers of gravity of solids: a reconstruction based on a newly discovered version of the conical frustum contained in manuscript UCLA 170/624.Riccardo Bellé & Beatrice Sisana - 2022 - Archive for History of Exact Sciences 76 (5):471-511.
The manuscript UCLA 170/624 contains Galileo’s proof of the center of gravity of the frustum of a cone, which was ultimately published as Theoremata circa centrum gravitatis solidorum in Discorsi e dimostrazioni matematiche intorno a due nuove scienze. The UCLA copy opens the possibility of giving a fuller account of Theoremata dating and development, and it can shed light on the origins of this research by the young Galileo. A comparison of the UCLA manuscript with the other extant (...)

Venomous Astronomical Scorpio: Selected Aspects of Conflict between Galileo Galilei and the Jesuit Orazio Grassi.

Paolo Beni da Gubbio (1553-1625) has been studied almost exclusively for his literary and rhetorical production. However, he finds an important place among the scholars of the Renaissance who developed a novel reading of Plato as an alternative to the predominant exegesis of Ficino and his followers. His writings represent a prime example of the interplay between exegetical discussions (both of literary and philosophical texts) and the emerging sciences. In the unpublished part of his commentary on Plato’s "Timaeus", Beni discusses (...)

This paper will analyze three historical cases (Francis Bacon, Galileo Galilei and Margaret Cavendish) that exemplify the complexity of the interaction between science and religion in the Scientific Revolution and confirm the interpretation of J. H. Brooke, according to which, in this historical context –rather than a separation- a differentiation took hold between them. We will hold that although these authors agreed in proposing the separation of science and religion as an ideal, each in their own way made an (...)

This is the first English version of Geymonat's work since its publication in Italy in 1957. As the title suggests, it is more than a biography, for it records the vital interplay between the world of Galileo's thought and his vibrant personality. What gave direction to his life, according to Professor Geymonat, was the devotion to the task of "cultural propaganda," of making his radical discoveries palatable to the intellectual elite of the Catholic Church. That he took up this (...)

    Galileo: A Very Short Introduction.Stillman Drake - 2001 - Oxford University Press.
In a startling reinterpretation of the evidence, Stillman Drake advances the hypothesis that Galileo's trial and condemnation by the Inquisition was caused not by his defiance of the Church, but by the hostility of contemporary philosophers. Galileo's own beautifully lucid arguments are used to show how his scientific method was utterly divorced from the Aristotelian approach to physics in that it was based on a search not for causes but for laws. Galileo's method was of overwhelming significance (...)
