  1. The Nature of Philosophy. [REVIEW]P. B. D. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (2):346-346.
A prosaic and unimaginative introductory textbook. The author claims that his aim is "not to introduce the student to the various philosophies but to introduce him to the kind of thinking from which philosophy comes." The very patness of his presentation, however, discourages original philosophical thinking.--D. P. B.

    Thomas d'Aquin et l'analyse linguistique. [REVIEW]P. B. D. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (4):630-630.
A brief statement of medieval linguistic analysis as found chiefly in the works of Thomas Aquinas. A thin survey of contemporary analysis is offered in order to contrast the purported acceptance of analysis as the end of philosophy with Thomas' use of analysis as method. Unfortunately, most of the constructive work in language analysis during the past ten years is not considered. The brevity of the text precludes persuasive treatment; yet the book succeeds in its expressed purpose of sketching some (...)

    Western Views of Islam in the Middle Ages. [REVIEW]P. B. D. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (1):151-151.
Southern examines three phases in the development of the western view of Islam from 650 to 1570. In an historical study of these phases he traces the gradual emergence of a critical spirit of inquiry regarding Islam. The author argues that "... medieval scholars and men of affairs came up against problems with which, in a different context, we are familiar."--D. P. B.

    and STUERMAN, W. E. Philosophy and the American Heritage. [REVIEW]P. B. D. - 1961 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (2):343-343.
Directed to the non-philosopher, this is an attempt to sketch briefly a public philosophy for contemporary America. It attacks the "enfeebling naturalism" of Dewey and espouses the right of suffrage as the most fundamental right of man.--D. P. B.

    Essays in Ontology. [REVIEW]P. B. D. - 1964 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (4):638-638.
Essays by E. B. Allaire, May Brodbeck, Reinhart Grossmann, Herbert Hochberg and Robert G. Turnbull, most of which have already appeared since 1959. Half of the essays argue answers of a realist type to contemporary statements of traditional ontological problems. The second half of the volume studies the ontological "systems" of Ockhom, Berkeley, Frege, Moore, Wittgenstein, Quine and Dewey from a realistic standpoint. Three previously unpublished essays are included: "Particulars and Time", "Common Names", and "The 'Tractatus': Nominalistic or Realistic?". An (...)

    Gralsschöpfung. [REVIEW]P. B. D. - 1963 - Review of Metaphysics 17 (1):151-152.
The author sees Parsifal as setting the essential problem for the present age. From a study of the grail myths, Spieler attempts to point the way to a synoptic view of experience. Basic to the project is his view that everything is a product of the logos which permeates all of reality. It is by virtue of the logical law, as the causal nexus of experience, that a reconciliation of fragmented experience is seen to be possible. A carefully documented and (...)

    Language and Reasoning. [REVIEW]P. B. D. - 1962 - Review of Metaphysics 15 (4):676-676.
An introductory text which deals with several of the basic problems of semantical and logical analysis. Most of the discussion is devoted to problems of usage, rules, inference, and validity. A rather cumbersome symbolism results from the author's explicit attempt to treat these problems with the formal tools of elementary symbolic logic.--D. P. B.

    Maximal Kripke-type semantics for modal and superintuitionistic predicate logics.D. P. Skvortsov & V. B. Shehtman - 1993 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 63 (1):69-101.
Recent studies in semantics of modal and superintuitionistic predicate logics provided many examples of incompleteness, especially for Kripke semantics. So there is a problem: to find an appropriate possible- world semantics which is equivalent to Kripke semantics at the propositional level and which is strong enough to prove general completeness results. The present paper introduces a new semantics of Kripke metaframes' generalizing some earlier notions. The main innovation is in considering "n"-tuples of individuals as abstract "n"-dimensional vectors', together with some (...)

We apply an online optimization process based on machine learning to the production of Bose-Einstein condensates. BEC is typically created with an exponential evaporation ramp that is optimal for ergodic dynamics with two-body s-wave interactions and no other loss rates, but likely sub-optimal for real experiments. Through repeated machine-controlled scientific experimentation and observations our ’learner’ discovers an optimal evaporation ramp for BEC production. In contrast to previous work, our learner uses a Gaussian process to develop a statistical model of the (...)

It is unknown to what extent those measures have affected end-of-life care, particularly with regard to the do-not-resuscitate order. Methods: Retrospective cohort study to assess associations of the frequency and timing of DNR orders with advance directive status, patient demographics, physician’s specialty and extent of documentation of discussion on end-of-life care. Results: DNR orders were more frequent for patients on a medical service than on (...)

Logics of some kripke frames connected with Medvedev notion of informational types.V. B. Shehtman & D. P. Skvortsov - 1986 - Studia Logica 45 (1):101-118.
Intermediate prepositional logics we consider here describe the setI() of regular informational types introduced by Yu. T. Medvedev [7]. He showed thatI() is a Heyting algebra. This algebra gives rise to the logic of infinite problems from [13] denoted here asLM 1. Some other definitions of negation inI() lead to logicsLM n (n ). We study inclusions between these and other systems, proveLM n to be non-finitely axiomatizable (n ) and recursively axiomatizable (n ). We also show that formulas in (...)

Aim: Patients with advanced cancer need information about end-of-life treatment options in order to make informed decisions. Clinicians vary in the frequency with which they initiate these discussions.Patients and methods: As part of a long-term longitudinal study, patients with an expected 2-year survival of less than 50% who had advanced gastrointestinal or lung cancer or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis were interviewed. Each patient’s medical record was reviewed at enrollment and at 3 months for evidence of the discussion of patient wishes concerning (...)

    Ethical issues experienced by intensive care unit nurses in everyday practice.Maria I. D. Fernandes & Isabel M. P. B. Moreira - 2013 - Nursing Ethics 20 (1):0969733012452683.
This research aims to identify the ethical issues perceived by intensive care nurses in their everyday practice. It also aims to understand why these situations were considered an ethical issue and what interventions/strategies have been or are expected to be developed so as to minimize them. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview with 15 nurses working at polyvalent intensive care units in 4 Portuguese hospitals, who were selected by the homogenization of multiple samples. The qualitative content analysis identified end-of-life (...)

An experiment was performed to test the hypothesis that people sometimes take physical actions to make themselves more effective problem solvers. The task was to generate all possible words that could be formed from seven Scrabble letters. In one condition, participants could use their hands to manipulate the letters, and in another condition, they could not. Results show that more words were generated with physical manipulation than without. However, an interaction was obtained between the physical manipulation conditions and the specific (...)
