The paper argues in favour of a direct realist reading of Aquinas’s theory of intelligible species, in opposition to the recent representationalist challenges. In order to secure the direct realist reading, the paper follows three steps: a short description of Aquinas’s process of cognition, a survey of the direct realist arguments and the analysis of the representationalist interpretation. The final step consists of investigating the representationalist reading as it is suggested by two scholars, Claude Panaccio in Aquinas on Intellectual Representation (...) and Robert Pasnau in Theories of Cognition in the Latter Middle Ages. Thus, the paper can be construed as a reply to these two authors, due to the thorough attention paid to their argumentative trails. With regard to Panaccio’s reading the paper focuses on the identity between the intelligible species and the essence of the extra-mental object and argues that Panaccio understands identity in a very narrow sense. Concerning Pasnau’s line of reasoning the focus is on the primum cognitum status of the intelligible species, and the main argument is that intelligible species is understood by Aquinas as the quo and not the quod of cognition. As the paper shows, neither one, nor the other interpretation poses a threat to the direct realist reading of Aquinas’s intelligible species. (shrink)

My goal in this paper is to contribute to the literature on Roger Bacon's epistemology by focusing on the issue of perception of quantity. The reading I aim to substantiate is that Bacon's account is best understood in terms of indirect realism. I call it indirect realism because although we have access to quantities as they exist in nature, the account is mediated by the use of a quasi-syllogism. The quasi-syllogism is constructed based on three inputs, the species of the (...) eye, colour, and light. To defend this reading I follow five steps. First, I analyse the importance of quantity in perception, and then, in steps two and three, I look at Bacon's theory of perception from its two sides, extramission and intromission. In the fourth step I look at the quasi-syllogisms that mediate cognition of quantities, and in the fifth and final step, I draw all the threads together and make the case for Bacon's indirect realism of quantity perception. The main claim I defend in this paper is that Robert Kilwardby, a thirteenth-century Dominican philosopher, construed bodily pain as a fully-fledged intentional state of the sensory soul. To prove this, I first examine Kilwarby’s account of how pain comes to be and how the sensory soul experiences it. I then show that pain cannot be reduced to a feeling the sensory soul experiences for the simple reason that pain has representational content, and is thus also directed at something.

El presente artículo aborda un tema novedoso dentro del Derecho, siendo objeto de estudio del Derecho Urbanístico en especial, tanto para la enseñanza pregraduada como postgraduada, que analiza el alcance jurídico de los planes de ordenamiento territorial y urbanismo como auténticas normas jurídicas, su contenido, elaboración y vía de aprobación, constatando la importancia de otorgarle a dichos planes autenticidad jurídica, no como simple instrumento jurídico, sino como norma que integra el ordenamiento normativo de nuestra sociedad.

Partimos del supuesto de que la transición política del PLD al PDJ generó la esperanza del cambio en la sociedad japonesa, en los vecinos regionales y en los aliados occidentales. Empero no hay señales de un liderazgo político de este partido que evidencie un cambio de rumbo y un proyecto propio. Las declaraciones de su líder espiritual, Ichir? Ozawa, provocaron una incertidumbre generalizada por lo radical de su discurso. El tiempo que el PDJ lleva en el poder ha estado plagado (...) de desacuerdos internos y crisis. La muy reciente crisis causada por la triple catástrofe del 11 de marzo de 2011 mostró la desintegración al interior del partido y la falta de acuerdos entre sus propios miembros, mostrando que este cambio solo ha traído más de lo mismo. Technological augmentation in the field of communication is a new way of controlling and manipulating the interface between current political communications and information. This is because, within the new paradigms of power, political communication is under the influence of netocracy, a new and mythical form of cybertechnological superpanopticism. The general objective of this paper is to analyze the phenomenon of cybertechnological globalization where, according to Alexander Bard and Jan Söderqvist, this new form of political and communicative superpanopticism is the result (...) of netocracy. This is related not just to the undermining of capitalism, but also to the myth of internet transparency as the site for communicational freedom. In theoretical terms, this paper seeks to deconstruct this hypothesis based on Slavoj Žižek’s position on netocracy. He claims this phenomenon is little more than a new and perverse form of capitalism which engages new methods of manipulating political communication. The methodology used in this paper draws on Bard and Söderqvist’s arguments, Žižek’s critique and Gilles Deleuze’s deconstruction. (shrink)

The purpose of this paper is to show that in Western postmodernism, both religion and the university are under the sign of simulacra. Friedrich Nietzsche’s “death of God” instigates a discussion of postmodernism and a simulacrum of religion. According to Jean Baudrillard and the theory of the Three Orders of the Simulacra, reality died and “hyperreality” took its place and now governs our existence. If, for Michel Foucault, the religious phenomenon today is outside theological beliefs and traditions, oriented towards the (...) body, power and panoptic supervision, for Jacques Derrida the phenomenon appears more as a negative theology of deconstruction. The theoretical objective seeks to explore the mutations that have occurred both in the academic environment and in religion under the phenomenon of globalisation and the technologisation of humanity. Here, the study of religion in universities is a third order simulacrum, the consequence of which is the illusion of knowledge and the unconditional independence of humanity, manipulated by technological evolution. The methodology used is Derridarian decon­struction, Nietzschean nihilism and the Baudrillardian criticism of the postmodern consumerist system. (shrink)

Summary The First Sacred War was hotly debated in the 4th century. The crimes committed by the Crisaeans in this war were later equated to those committed by the Phocians during the Third Sacred War, or those committed by the Locrians of Amphissa during the Fourth Sacred War. This paper shows how the parallels drawn between the First and Third Sacred Wars (SW1–SW3) and between the First and Fourth Sacred Wars (SW1–SW4) were respectively shaped and used as an argument in (...) two different milieus: in pro-Macedonian intellectual circles in Athens, and in the Athenian forensic and deliberative arena. The main aim of this paper is to understand why ‘SW1–SW3’ is not used as an argument in the latter. In fact, Athens’ most prominent politicians had to cope with the Athenian support for the Phocians in the so-called Third Sacred War. Thus, the Phocians were depicted as guilty, but not to the point that they were compared to the Crisaeans. The legacy of the latter was ambivalent and lent itself to this shift in meaning. (shrink)

The article demonstrates that post-Soviet academic debates about theoretical concepts and visions of truth can be usefully interpreted in terms of different “class positions” of knowledge producers. One academic faction is interested in academic freedom, autonomy, and corporate solidarity, as the social and cultural capitals of its members are involved with the global symbolic market. The capitals of the other group are invested into the slightly modified Soviet academic system and local symbolic fields. Intellectuals necessarily are aligned with more powerful (...) social actors and thus become involved in divisions and struggles that they cannot escape. (shrink)

Son numerosos los valores que se atribuyen al pretérito imperfecto en castellano, de ahí que muchas gramáticas –especialmente aquellas que están dirigidas a los estudiantes de ELE- adopten un enfoque mecanicista para reflejar los diferentes empleos de este tiempo. Partiendo de esta constatación, este trabajo se propone determinar - desde un enfoque aspectual- si es posible atribuir al pretérito imperfecto un valor único del cual se desprenden sus múltiples usos; se examina, entonces, la interacción del aspecto verbal del pretérito imperfecto (...) y del aspecto léxico del predicado conjugado. Los resultados muestran que los variados usos del pretérito imperfecto en el discurso provienen de la combinación de su aspecto verbal imperfectivo y de la naturaleza semántica de los predicados así como de ciertos elementos co-textuales. Se demuestra así, por una parte, la unicidad del pretérito imperfecto y la importancia de la noción de Aspecto en los diferentes valores que puede adquirir este tiempo; por otra parte, se evita la asignación de valores, a veces, contradictorios que dificulta el estudio del pretérito imperfecto de indicativo en castellano. Se realiza una revisión bibliográfica con el objetivo de analizar los diferentes códigos éticos y deontológicos internacionales, regionales y nacionales de los que se nutre la especialidad de psiquiatría. Se concluye que el comportamiento ético se basa en el sentido de la responsabilidad individual de cada psiquiatra hacia cada paciente y en la capacidad de ambos para determinar cuál es la conducta correcta y más apropiada. Las normas externas y las directrices, tales como los códigos de conducta profesional, las aportaciones (...) de la ética y de las normas legales, no garantizan por sí solas la práctica ética de la medicina, pero constituyen un importante marco referencial. A literature review was performed with the objective of analyzing the various international, regional and national ethical and deontological codes that the psychiatry specialty feeds on. It is concluded that ethical behavior is based on the sense of individual responsibility of each psychiatrist to each patient and the ability of both to determine what the correct and appropriate behavior is. External standards and guidelines, such as professional codes of conduct, the study of ethics and legal standards alone do not guarantee the ethical practice of medicine but are an important framework. Can Confucian ethics contribute to diagnosing the root causes of video games’ toxicity and formulating design requirements for redressing it? Contemporary Confucian studies on technology have not addressed these questions, although video games have become an important part of contemporary human life. This paper advances Confucian-inspired ethical studies on technologies by bringing attention to the moral dimension of this underexamined aspect of contemporary life. By focusing on League of Legends (one of the most popular toxic online multiplayer games), we argue (...) that League’s toxic environment hinders the cultivation of ren (仁), shu (恕), and he (和), but Confucian conceptual resources can inspire the formulation of at least three design recommendations against League’s toxicity. The first is to eliminate killing in the game by banking on players’ desire to express their skillfulness. The second is to include a rewatching feature to sanction toxic players with the aim of inculcating sympathy in them. The last is to add a procedure before and after each match, where players can cordially interact with each other and develop mutual respect. (shrink)

De repente, la religión recobra una relevancia que parecía olvidada en Europa. Sin embargo, no había dejado de desempeñar un papel en las sociedades europeas, pero era un papel discreto que vuelve al primer plano debido a la llegada de inmigrantes que profesan creencias diferentes a las mayoritarias y llevan a los europeos a identificarse como parte de sociedades postseculares. En este contexto, se cuestiona el modelo liberal de la libertad de conciencia y la construcción de la idea de tolerancia, (...) cuyo paradigma normativo es el liberalismo político de John Rawls. Autoras como Martha Nussbaum plantean la importancia de primar la idea de respeto sobre la de tolerancia. En este trabajo se tratan algunos problemas que pueden derivar de ciertas concepciones de respeto. (shrink)
