How research on persuasion can inform dual-process models of judgment.Richard E. Petty, Duane T. Wegener & Pablo Briñol - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e138.
De Neys makes some useful points regarding dual-process models, but his critique ignores highly relevant theories of judgment from the persuasion literature. These persuasion models predate and often circumvent many of the criticisms he makes of the dual-process approaches he covers. Furthermore, the persuasion models anticipated some of the correctives to dual-process models that he proposes.

Developing and Evaluating an Innovative Structural Competency Curriculum for Pre-Health Students.JuLeigh Petty, Jonathan M. Metzl & Mia R. Keeys - 2017 - Journal of Medical Humanities 38 (4):459-471.
The inclusion of structural competency training in pre-health undergraduate programs may offer significant benefits to future healthcare professionals. This paper presents the results of a comparative study of an interdisciplinary pre-health curriculum based in structural competency with a traditional premedical curriculum. The authors describe a new evaluation tool, the Structural Foundations of Health Survey ©, developed to evaluate structural skills and sensibilities. The authors use the survey to evaluate two groups of graduating seniors at Vanderbilt University—majors in an interdisciplinary pre-health (...)

‘Blurred boundaries’: When nurses and midwives give anti-vaccination advice on Facebook.Janet Green, Julia Petty, Lisa Whiting, Fiona Orr, Larissa Smart, Ann-Marie Brown & Linda Jones - 2022 - Nursing Ethics 29 (3):552-568.
Background: Nurses and midwives have a professional obligation to promote health and prevent disease, and therefore they have an essential role to play in vaccination. Despite this, some nurses and midwives have been found to take an anti-vaccination stance and promulgate misinformation about vaccines, often using Facebook as a platform to do so. Research question: This article reports on one component and dataset from a larger study – ‘the positives, perils and pitfalls of Facebook for nurses’. It explores the specific (...)

When comparing alternative courses of action, modern military decision makers often must consider both the military effectiveness and the ethical consequences of the available alternatives. The basis, design, calibration, and performance of a principles-based computational model of ethical considerations in military decision making are reported in this article. The relative ethical violation (REV) model comparatively evaluates alternative military actions based upon the degree to which they violate contextually relevant ethical principles. It is based on a set of specific ethical principles (...)

The impact of grounded procedures can vary as a function of perceived thought validity, meaning, and timing.Pablo Briñol & Richard E. Petty - 2021 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 44.
Cleansing inductions reduce the impact of negative and positive reactions, whereas connection manipulations magnify them. We suggest that grounded procedures can produce these effects by affecting the perceived validity of thoughts. In accord with the self-validation theory, we also note the importance of considering how moderators, such as the meaning of the action and the timing of inductions, affect outcomes.

    Consciousness: A neurosurgical perspective.P. G. Petty - 1998 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 5 (1):86-96.
A neurosurgical view of consciousness is presented. It is biased by our need to deal with coma. The concept of primary or neurosurgical consciousness is discussed, and the anatomy, physiology, pathology and clinical features described in a simple a way. It is suggested that the dynamic interaction between the reticular activating system and the cerebral cortex is the anatomic and physiologic basis for primary consciousness. It is emphasised that this in no way diminishes the role of the cortex in either (...)

For most of the two and a half centuries since Thomas Hearne first printed the poem now known as The Battle of Maldon, scholars have read it as a factual contemporary account by a well-informed observer of a historical event. The date and circumstances of the death of Byrhtnoth, ealdorman of Essex, are attested in surviving records independent of the poem; and his fame and deeds can be traced through the charters and wills of the reigns of kings Eadwig, Eadgar, (...)

Introspection and interpretation: Dichotomy or continuum?Richard E. Petty & Pablo Briñol - 2009 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 32 (2):157-158.
Judgments vary in the extent to which they are based on interpretation versus relatively direct access to mental contents. That is, a judgment might require a trivial amount of interpretation (e.g., translating one's immediately accessible ) or a rather substantial amount of confabulation. Recognizing this continuum of interpretation underlying judgment could be more fruitful than debating a categorical introspection versus interpretation distinction.

Multi-process models in social psychology provide a more balanced view of social thought and action.Richard E. Petty - 2004 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 27 (3):353-354.
Krueger & Funder (K&F) describe social psychology as overly consumed with maladaptive heuristics and biases. This characterization fails to consider multi-process models of social thought and action. Such models, especially with respect to attitudes, have outlined the situational and individual difference variables responsible for determining when thoughts and actions are relatively thoughtful versus when they are more reliant on mental shortcuts.

In this article, the authors review a contemporary social psychological perspective on persuasion with an emphasis on explicating the psychological processes that underlie successful attitude change. Those mechanisms by which variables in the persuasion setting can influence attitude change are: (a) affect the amount of information processing; (b) bias the thoughts that are generated or (c) one’s confidence in those thoughts (or other structural features); (d) serve as persuasive arguments or evidence or (e) affect attitudes by serving as simple cues (...)

In her 2011 documentary, La Langue de Zahra/Zahra’s Mother Tongue, Algerian/French filmmaker Fatima Sissani “gives voice” to her Kabyle mother, Zahra, who lived in France as an immigrant woman for years after Algerian independence without speaking French. Often considered uneducated and ignorant, these women act as archives of oral tradition, history, and poetry in a language their children often do not speak. In this paper, I will look at how this performative documentary film creates “spaces in-between” cultures through its uses (...)

This book is the work of an American philosopher recognized for his contributions to the Continental form of postmodern philosophy of religion. Transcendence and Self-Transcendence is a sequel to Westphal’s earlier God, Guilt, and Death published in 1987. The readers of this latest study will soon realize that they are viewing the thoughtful work of a scholar who has mastered the relevant literature of his subject. The full, helpful footnotes throughout Transcendence and Self-Transcendence support that claim. This latest project completed (...)

Etyczne i ekonomiczne aspekty programu agrarnego Henryka Kamieńskiego.Zdzisław Szymański - 2008 - Annales. Ethics in Economic Life 11 (1):77-86.
Henryk Kamieński (1813–1866), a philosopher, economist, and theorist of struggle for national independence, idealized petty ownership as the most appropriate form of ownership both in ethical and economic aspects. He analyzed the problem on three levels. In his proposals for a specific solution of the agrarian question, presented in the Warsaw periodicals, Kamieński supported the introduction of agricultural rent paid by peasants and the abolishment of serfdom. Calling serfdom a land usury had an ethical implication. In the (...)
