The Voices of Liberation series celebrates the lives and writings of African Liberation activists and heroes. By providing access to the thoughts and writings of some of the many men and women who fought for the dismantling of apartheid, this series invites the contemporary reader to engage directly with the rich history of the struggle for democracy, to discover where we come from and to explore how we, too, can choose to shape our destiny.

The doorways of prisons do not and will not be the sole ones to define the process of penal custody of black women within and outside these same prisons. As in all aspects of social, political, and economic lives, the experience of prison cannot be thought from a general and subliminal perspective, one that could be found in people generally defined as “woman” but whose race, social condition, and sexuality would have little or nothing to do with their life experiences (...) up to that moment or beginning at that moment, within or outside the surveilled walls. From an epistemological standpoint that is a feminist, intersectional, and decolonial, this article reflects upon what Brazil's system of penal justice has been in the past decades, in continuity with what Brazil has always been for black women over the centuries. Female sex steroids can affect the motor system, modulating motor cortex excitability as well as performance in dexterity and coordination tasks. However, it has not yet been explored whether FSS affects the cognitive components of motor behavior. Mu is a sensorimotor rhythm observed by electroencephalography in alpha and beta frequency bands in practices such as motor imagery and action observation. This rhythm represents a window for studying the activity of neural circuits involved in motor cognition. Herein we investigated whether the (...) alpha-mu and beta-mu power in the sensorimotor region and the alpha and beta power over frontal, parietal, and occipital regions are modulated differently in the menstrual, follicular, and luteal phases of menstrual cycles in right-handed dominant women. To do so, these women underwent MI and AO in the three menstrual cycle phases. The spectral activity of the cortical regions for the alpha and beta bands were compared between phases of the menstrual cycle and a correlation analysis was also performed in relation to estrogen and progesterone levels. For the hypothesis-based approach, beta-mu event-related desynchronization was significantly stronger in the C3 channel in the follicular phase than in the menstrual and luteal phases. For the data-driven approach, beta ERD during MI was higher in the follicular phase than in the menstrual and luteal phases in the frontal region. These findings suggest the effect of FSS on executive movement control. No effect of menstrual cycle phases was observed in cortical areas investigated during OA, but alpha and beta bands correlated positively with the follicular phase plasma estradiol level. Thus, the attenuation of alpha and beta bands referring to mirror neuron activities appears to be associated with inhibition of cortical activity when estradiol levels are lower, improving cognitive processing of motor action. Psychologists’ relationship with introspection is much like that between men and women: it is on again, off again and psychologists often feel they can neither live with introspection nor without it. In their often compelling article, Jack and Roepstorff argue that the fertility of the field depends on psychologists reuniting with the practice of introspection [1]. They suggest that, although reluctant to admit it, psychologists have been carrying on a surreptitious relationship with introspection that they should come clean and admit. (...) Although mindful that challenges exist, Jack and Roepstorff suggest that psychologists can safely embrace introspection and spawn important new insights. Temperance literature, though widely popular in America and Britain between 1830–80, lost its allure in the decades that followed. In spite of its didactic and moralistic nature, the public eagerly consumed temperance novels, thus reciprocating contemporaneous writers’ efforts to promote social ideals and mend social ills. The main aim of this paper is to redress the critical neglect that the temperance prose written by women about women has endured by looking at three literary works—two novellas and one confessional novelette—written by (...) mid-nineteenth-century American female writers. These works serve as a prism through which the authors present generally “tabooed” afflictions such as inebriation among high-class women and society’s role in perpetuating such behaviors. The essay examines the conflicting forces underlying such representations and offers an inquiry into the restrictive and hostile social climate in mid-nineteenth-century America and the lack of medical attention given to alcohol addicts as the possible causes that might have prompted women’s dangerous behaviors, including inebriation. This paper also demonstrates the cautious approach that nineteenth-century female writers had to take when dealing with prevalent social ills, such as bigotry, hypocrisy and disdain directed at female drunkards. It shows how these writers, often sneered at or belittled by critics and editors, had to maneuver very carefully between the contending forces of openly critiquing social mores, on the one hand, and not being censored, on the other. This task demands, besides an adoption of theories and models from biological evolution, theories for culture-specific processes as well. Cellular identity and its response to external or internal signalling variations are encoded in a cell's genome as regulatory information. The genomic regions that specify this type of information are highly variable and degenerated in their sequence determinants, as it is becoming increasingly evident through the application of genome‐scale methods to study gene expression. Here, we speculate that the same scenario applies to the regulatory regions controlling where DNA replication starts in the metazoan genome. We propose that replication origins cannot (...) be defined as unique genomic features, but rather that DNA synthesis initiates opportunistically from accessible DNA sites, making cells highly robust and adaptable to environmental or developmental changes. This paper intends to analyze how Aristotle develops the argument that connects justice and law; for this task, the books I and II of his Politics will be analyzed, since these texts offer us a more direct understanding of the central issue that will be developed here. Since Aristotle also deals with this fundamental theme in books II and V of the Nicomachean Ethics, visiting important passages of this work will also be necessary. Therefore, the hypothesis to be developed in (...) this brief study focuses on understanding the place of justice and law in the sphere of political life, as well as on the way in which individual virtues fulfill their political purposes in improving the moral character of individuals who practice law of the city, a context of different levels of human self-sufficiency. The aim of this paper is to clarify the truth-functional interpretation of the logical connective of the material implication. The importance of such clarification lies in the fact that it allows avoiding the supposed paradoxes introduced by C. I. Lewis (1918). I argue that an adequate understanding of the history and purposes of logic is enough to dissolve them away. The defense is based on an exposition of propositional compositionalism. To compare, I also present Stalnaker’s (1968) alternative that seeks to (...) explain the implicit concept of conditionality of conditionals assertions. In order to reinforce my aim I expound the twelve different meanings of ‘implication’ stated by Corcoran (1993) in order to hold that a proper understanding of these meanings allows us to avoid ambiguities and confusions. Finally, I expect to show that despite the possible alternatives, compositionalism is still the best explanation for the truth-functionality account of logical connectives. (shrink)

Drawing upon Hebrew Scripture and post-biblical Jewish sources, this article adumbrates the possibility of a humanism that does not require a universal metanarrative sponsored by the Enlightenment. A humanistic ethic, it is argued, can be nurtured by the principle of neighborly love, which with aid of insights from modern Jewish thinkers - Martin Buber, Hermann Cohen, Jacques Derrida, and Emmanuel Levinas - the author understands as an attitude of being attentive to the existential and material needs of the other. /// (...) Apresenta-se uma análise fílmica do videodocumentário Roda o Tererê com vistas a investigar se e como o filme dirigido pela cineasta brasileira Lilian Solá Santiago contribui para uma descolonização do olhar, da estética e da política das imagens. Interessa identificar até que ponto o videodocumentário tensiona o regime de visibilidade dominante na sociedade nacional problematizado por teóricos localizados fora do eixo cultural da Europa. Conclui-se que, ao inscrever-se enquanto cineasta, Lilian Santiago não transforma a sua câmera apenas em voz; transforma (...) o microfone em ouvido, e faz dele uma caixa de ressonância para que as pessoas ouçam e vejam aqueles que vem sendo historicamente apagados dos espaços do aparecer. The article explores the conceptual antinomies of the liberal notion of tolerance as the superficial leveling of differences of faith and ethical commitments to affirm the inalienable human dignity of others. In arguing that cognitive and axiological commitments are existentially grounded and thus intractable, I argue that genuine tolerance is to acknowledge and honor difference. I further question whether we are to “tolerate” what we regard as “intolerable,” politically and otherwise?

The sensible and conflicting scenario of the pandemic postulated many challenges to societies around the world in 2020. O presente artigo, tem como objetivo apresentar a maneira pela qual Hobbes e Espinosa entendem a multidão, elucidando, a partir disso o papel que conferem a ela na instituição do Estado. Parte-se do pressuposto de que tanto num pensador quanto no outro, a multidão tem um papel central no que diz respeito à instituição do estado civil, de maneira que, por vias distintas, tal instituição somente pode ser pensada a partir dela. Como se observa, os dois pensadores têm maneiras totalmente (...) díspares de conceber a multidão – enquanto em um ela necessariamente precisa ser unificada por meio da representação, no outro o sujeito político instituinte é justamente a multidão tomada em sua pluralidade –, do que se segue que somos colocados diante de duas concepções distintas de Estado. The stormy development of vocal production during the first postnatal weeks is generally underestimated. Our longitudinal studies revealed an amazingly fast unfolding and combinatorial complexification of pre-speech melodies. We argue that relying on “melody” could provide for the immature brain a kind of filter to extract life-relevant information from the complex speech stream.

Children The work discusses the results of a longitudinal research, which lasted for two years, aiming at investigating how children aged between five and six years old, studying at a children education institution, appropriate themselves with the written language. It uses the instrumental or the historical-genetic method, elaborated by Vygotski (1997) and collaborators, in order to study the development of superior psychological functions. The results indicate: a) children acknowledge the mnemonic function or (...) the register one before realizing the alphabetical character of writing; b) the way written language is worked by teachers have an effect/ influence the processes of written appropriation; c) there are development ways of the written language in children that are not considered unique and linear, but are dependable of learning. Crianças. : Este trabalho discute os resultados de uma pesquisa de caráter longitudinal, que teve dois anos de duração, cujo objetivo foi investigar como crianças com idades entre 5 e 6 anos, matriculadas em uma instituição de Educação Infantil, se apropriam da linguagem escrita. Utiliza o método instrumental ou histórico-genético, elaborado por Vygotski (1997) e seus colaboradores, para estudar o desenvolvimento das funções psicológicas superiores. Os resultados da pesquisa indicaram que: a) as crianças compreendem a função mnemônica ou de registro antes de terem o domínio do caráter alfabético da escrita; b) os modos como as professoras trabalham a linguagem escrita afetam/ influenciam os processos de apropriação da escrita; c) existem percursos de desenvolvimento da linguagem escrita nas crianças que não são únicos e lineares, mas que dependem das aprendizagens. Resumo Neste estudo o autor procura analisar a compreensão da natureza humana que está subjacente às palavras de Aquiles, na Ilíada, IX,318-320 e na Odisseia, XI,489-491. Segundo o autor, Aquiles é portador de uma interpretação da condição humana que traduz uma determinada compreensão do que significa ser humano. De modo a deixar ver a compreensão da natureza humana presente nas palavras de Aquiles, o autor recorre a indícios encontrados noutros pontos das obras homéricas referidas, relacionando as concepções presentes nos dois (...) textos alvo. Identifica-se ainda a descrição da natureza humana que é possível fazer a partir das situações que envolvem os versos em análise. Assim, por um lado procura-se identificar que compreensão da natureza humana está presente no discurso de Aquiles e, por outro, que natureza humana emerge das alterações que o seu discurso sofre. Na Ilíada o autor encontra indícios de uma compreensão afetada pela ira, envolvendo o mundo humano numa aura de melancolia, na qual predomina o reconhecimento da injustiça por toda a parte. Da Odisseia obtém-se uma avaliação da vida que considera qualquer forma de existência humana preferível a qualquer forma de morte. Finalmente, o artigo explora o modo como a sua interpretação acerca da vida é modulada pelas mudanças que de cada vez se abatem sobre ele. According to the author, Achilles bears an interpretation of the human condition that reflects a certain understanding of what it means to be human. In order to bring to light the understanding of human nature present in the words of Achilles, the verses listed are analysed, using evidences found elsewhere in the Homeric works mentioned, and relating the concepts present in the two target texts. A diagnosis is made in order to identify the description of human nature that is presented by the situations involving the poetic subject. In short, the author seeks to identify which understanding of human nature is present in the speech of Achilles, and what is the concept of human nature that emerges from the changes happening through the verses. Thus, in the Iliad the author finds evidences of an understanding affected by anger, involving the human world in a wave of melancholy in which the recognition of injustice predominates. And in Odyssey the article finds an evaluation of life that sustains that any form of human existence is preferable when compared with death – compared with death, life is better. The article explores in particular the idea that Achilles’ interpretation of life is modulated by the changes he suffers in his life. Rhythmus wurde vielfach nicht mehr als Reflex der »Natur« oder des »Lebens«, sondern als technisch regulierbare Größe gehandelt, die gleichwohl eine elementare Macht über den Menschen ausübt. Die tayloristische Arbeitsforschung und der davon inspirierte Konstruktivismus sahen in dieser Macht ein erstrangiges Mittel zur physischen Rekonstruktion des Menschen. ExcerptA series of recent works have explored Hans Blumenberg's metaphorology in its relation to anthropology and the hermeneutics of the lifeworld.1 In what follows, I would like to foreground another aspect of his work by describing the metaphorology and the earlier works on the history of philosophy as works of discourse analysis. From such a perspective, linguistic forms appear less as the expression of anthropological and lifeworld circumstances than as the continuation and transformation of intra-discursive, historical-systematic decisions. Recently, it has been argued that the phenomenon of direct transfer of intermediate metabolites between adjacent enzymes, also known as metabolic channelling, would not decrease the concentration of those intermediates in the bulk solution. However, this conclusion has been drawn by extrapolation from the results of simulations with a rather restricted set of parameters. We show that, for a number of kinetic cases, the existence of metabolic channelling can decrease the size of the soluble pool of intermediates. When the enzyme(s) (...) downstream of the channel have a catalytic capacity that is large relative to the enzymes upstream of the channel, the decrease of concentration can be substantial (3 orders of magnitude).
