Philosophers have developed several detailed accounts of what makes some mathematical proofs explanatory. Significantly less attention has been paid, however, to what makes some proofs more explanatory than other proofs. That is problematic, since the reasons for thinking that some proofs explain are also reasons for thinking that some proofs are more explanatory than others. So in this paper, I develop an account of comparative explanation in mathematics. I propose a theory of the `at least as explanatory as' relation among (...) mathematical proofs. (shrink)

I present and explain the Bohmian account of collapse in quantum mechanics.

La définition de l’anaphore est loin d’être consensuelle. Alors que certains la décrivent comme la reprise d’un segment textuel, d’autres considèrent qu’elle consiste en la construction d’une représentation mentale à partir d’éléments discursifs. Le phénomène, quoi qu’il en soit, est normalement signalé par certains marqueurs spécifiques, ceux-ci contribuant à la construction des références anaphoriques. Dans cet article, nous examinons divers phénomènes liés à la réalisation phonologique ou phonétique des marqueurs concernés, aux niveaux segmental et suprasegmental. Cet examen nous conduit à (...) mettre en évidence le rapport étroit qui existe entre deixis et anaphore. Nous montrons que des éléments de nature phonologique se combinent à l’emploi de marqueurs grammaticaux dans la construction des références anaphoriques. Nous soulignons que certaines dichotomies observées sur le plan prosodique permettent de marquer la continuité ou la discontinuité discursive et suggérons que des nuances d’ordre phonétique contribuent à signaler divers degrés d’accessibilité mentale du référent des formes impliquées. It has been my object in the present work to investigate the problems of ethics in the light of an examination of the facts of moral life. One reason for this procedure is my desire to conduct the reader by the same path that I myself have followed in approaching ethical questions.

It is often assumed that theorizing in terms of natural properties is more objectively valuable than theorizing in terms of non-natural properties. But this assumption faces an explanatory challenge: explain the greater objective value of theorizing in terms of natural properties. In this paper, I answer that challenge by proposing and exploring three different accounts of the objective value of naturalness. Two appeal to constitutive natures: it is part of the constitutive nature of explanation, or of objective value, that theorizing (...) in terms of natural properties is more objectively valuable. A prolific writer, this book originally published in 1921, was considered by the translator ‘the best general introduction of its author to the English public’, containing as is does many of his central ideas. Although the author had already fallen out with him by this time, in the preface to this book, he acknowledges Freud’s significance to the field and says he regards his ‘Psycho-Analysis as (...) being a step towards a new psycho-therapy’. A significant factor undermining real racial reconciliation in post-1994 South Africa is widespread resistance to shared historical responsibility amongst South Africans racialised as white. In response to the need for localised ‘white work’, this article aims to contribute to the uprooting of white denialism, specifically amongst Afrikaans-speaking Christians from Reformed backgrounds. The point of entry is two underexplored, challenging, contextualised crucifixion paintings, namely, Black Christ and Cross-Roads Jesus. Drawing on critical whiteness studies, extensive local and international experience as a ‘participatory’ (...) facilitator of conflict transformation and his particular embodiment, the author explores the creative unsettling potential of these two prophetic ‘icons’. Through this incarnational, phenomenological, diagnostic engagement with Black Christ, attention is drawn to the dynamics of family betrayal, ‘moral injury’ and idolisation underlying ‘white fragility’. ‘White fatigue’ is challenged by stressing the Biblical nature of Cross-Roads Jesus’ confrontational, ‘ugly’ portrayal of the systemic violence of apartheid and colonialism. It is also argued that a combination of Louw’s shocking portrayal of an enraged, emaciated township Jesus with the explicit depiction of white historical responsibility in Black Christ increases the counter-cultural potential of these icons to disrupt denial amongst white South African Christians. However, the realisation of this potential will require the cultivation of more capacity to work creatively with the intense emotional, moral, spiritual discomfort brought to the surface by this type of religious icon.Contribution: The article argues for a contextualised, South African engagement with the crucifixion of Christ, through an embodied interpretation of two anti-apartheid religious paintings. It makes a contribution to critical whiteness studies and practical theology and thus fits into the interdisciplinary, hermeneutical scope of HTS. (shrink)
