What would be the result of reading Derrida from the standpoint of material phenomenology? And what would be the result of reading material phenomenology on the basis of the requirements of Derridean thought? These are the questions that this article endeavours to tackle by focusing on the two philosophers’ readings of Husserl’s Lectures on the Consciousness of Internal Time. At first strangely similar, these two readings soon display marked differences. Whereas Derrida, in his approach, is keen to demonstrate that there (...) is never any pure presence, Michel Henry brings out an “Archi-presence” which he attempts to safeguard from any deconstruction. So perhaps material phenomenology functions as “quasi-deconstruction”, having the same relationship with Derridean thought as “negative theology” has with deconstruction. (shrink)

Michel Henry a fondé une partie de son oeuvre philosophique sur la phénoménologie matérielle. L'ouvrage tente d'en analyser la singularité, parmi les oeuvres d'autres phénoménologistes tels que Husserl, Heidegger, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, Ricoeur et Derrida. Cette analyse renvoie à une interrogation de la phénoménologie matérielle elle-même et ouvre d'autres voies de réflexion.

Selon une formule célèbre d?Alfred Schütz, les constructions des sciences sociales doivent être considérées et élaborées comme « des constructions du second degré, c?est-à-dire des constructions de constructions faites par les acteurs sur la scène sociale 1 ». C?est la spécificité épistémo­logique qui découle de cette position que le présent texte voudrait tenter de ressaisir. Pour ce faire nous repartirons d?abord du projet phénoménologique qui est celui de Schütz ? celui d?une phénoménologie non transcendantale du monde de la vie ? (...) puisqu?il n?est pas sans conséquences, et détermine même directement ses positions épistémo­logiques et méthodologiques. Une phénoménologie de l?attitude naturelle Dès son premier ouvrage (le seul publié de son vivant), Der sinnhafte Aufbau der sozialen Welt (1932) 2 , Schütz montre qu?une analyse phénoménologique du monde social passe par le renoncement à la posture transcendantale. L?objectif de Schütz est de décrire la structure de la Lebenswelt , du monde-de-la-vie, en tant qu?elle est expérimentée par des hommes dans leur attitude naturelle : « par des hommes, c?est-à-dire, par des hommes qui sont nés dans ce monde socioculturel, qui doivent y définir leurs attitudes, et doivent les réaliser 3 ». This article seeks to grasp the meaning of Michel Henry's use of the term "transcendental" to understand its specific nature as pure experience that owes nothing to the constituted or the a posteriori. It then considers the methodological consequences and difficulties resulting from such a conception of the transcendental. According to my hypothesis, in order to maintain the "major division" between the empirical and the transcendental, material phenomenology is caught in a form of double bind. One cannot say much about (...) the transcendental without risking contamination by the empirical. As far as the constituted is concerned, it is certainly possible to refer to it, but actually there is nothing to say. This paper tests this interpretative hypothesis against a specific example, namely, the phenomenological description of feeling offered by Henry. The analysis concludes by considering whether material phenomenology does not lapse into what Rudolf Bernet calls a form of "hyper-transcendentalism" in the sense that the totality of empirical reality ends by being "transcendentalized". No basis can be provided for intentionality, as Henry sometimes claims: it becomes a superfluous concept. (shrink)
