The place of the media in popular democracy.Richard D. Anderson - 1998 - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society 12 (4):481-500.
Does media coverage of politics undermine democratic deliberation? By covering the “horse race” instead of the issues, the media encourage people to believe that politicians place self‐interest above the public interest. The media also affect which issues people consider important, and negative advertisements discourage political participation. People learn from the media only because they know so little about politics. Were democracy deliberative, these media effects would undermine it. But democracy is not a deliberation but a contest that relies on the (...)

    Phosphatidylinositol 4,5‐bisphosphate: Targeted production and signaling.Yue Sun, Narendra Thapa, Andrew C. Hedman & Richard A. Anderson - 2013 - Bioessays 35 (6):513-522.
Phosphatidylinositol 4,5‐bisphosphate (PI4,5P2) is a key lipid signaling molecule that regulates a vast array of biological activities. PI4,5P2 can act directly as a messenger or can be utilized as a precursor to generate other messengers: inositol trisphosphate, diacylglycerol, or phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5‐trisphosphate. PI4,5P2 interacts with hundreds of different effector proteins. The enormous diversity of PI4,5P2 effector proteins and the spatio‐temporal control of PI4,5P2 generation allow PI4,5P2 signaling to control a broad spectrum of cellular functions. PI4,5P2 is synthesized by phosphatidylinositol phosphate kinases (...)

    Analyzing Argumentation In Rich, Natural Contexts.Anita Reznitskaya & Richard C. Anderson - 2006 - Informal Logic 26 (2):175-198.
The paper presents the theoretical and methodological aspects of research on the development of argument- ation in elementary school children. It presents a theoretical framework detailing psychological mechanisms responsible for the acquisition and transfer of argumentative discourse and demonstrates several applications of the framework, described in sufficient detail to guide future empirical investigations of oral, written, individual, or group argumentation performance. Software programs capable of facilitating data analysis are identified and their uses illustrated. The analytic schemes can be used to (...)

    Definite Descriptions and Semantic Memory.Andrew Ortony & Richard C. Anderson - 1977 - Cognitive Science 1 (1):74-83.
Subjects were exposed to sentences containing “direct” and “indirect” uses of names and definite descriptions. On a subsequent recognition test incorrect rejections tended to be of sentences involving indirect uses, and false alarms to sentences involving direct uses. This finding is contrary to the predictions of models that suggest indiscriminate substitution of names for descriptions, as do those of Anderson and Bower, and Rumelhart and Norman. The implication is that models of semantic memory must incorporate distinct intensional and extensional representations (...)

Limitations of the Liberal-Legal Model of International Human Rights: Six Lessons from El Salvador.Ken Anderson & Richard Anderson - 1985 - Telos: Critical Theory of the Contemporary 1985 (64):91-104.
To subject the international human rights movement to a purely theoretical critique cannot help but suggest a certain mean-spiritedness. After all, no one knows better than those in the front lines of human rights work exactly what, in terms of lives lost and atrocities suffered, the movement has been unable to achieve. The religious workers of the Salvadoran Archdiocese, the legal aid lawyers of Paraguay who affirm conscience over prudence, the founders of the Moscow chapter of Amnesty International, the prisoners (...)

Probabilistically Valid Inference of Covariation From a Single x,y Observation When Univariate Characteristics Are Known.Michael E. Doherty, Richard B. Anderson, Amanda M. Kelley & James H. Albert - 2009 - Cognitive Science 33 (2):183-205.
Participants were asked to draw inferences about correlation from single x,y observations. In Experiment 1 statistically sophisticated participants were given the univariate characteristics of distributions of x and y and asked to infer whether a single x, y observation came from a correlated or an uncorrelated population. In Experiment 2, students with a variety of statistical backgrounds assigned posterior probabilities to five possible populations based on single x, y observations, again given knowledge of the univariate statistics. In Experiment 3, statistically (...)
