This paper proposes the CorpRank algorithm to extract social hierarchies from electronic communication data. The algorithm computes a ranking score for each user as a weighted combination of the number of emails, the number of responses, average response time, clique scores, and several degree and centrality measures. The algorithm uses principal component analysis to calculate the weights of the features. This score ranks users according to their importance, and its output is used to reconstruct an organization chart. We illustrate the (...) algorithm over real-world data using the Enron corporation’s e-mail archive. Compared to the actual corporate work chart, compensation lists, judicial proceedings, and analyzing the major players involved, the results show promise. (shrink)

My goal in this paper is to compare Heidegger’s philosophy of science with Thomas Kuhn’s. With this comparison I want to pursue two goals: 1) using Kuhn’s arsenal of conceptual tools, to make Heidegger’s position appear in a clearer fashion; and 2) to show that Heidegger’s and Kuhn’s positions are not so different as one might expect. I will, thus, suggest that these philosophies can be compatible. I will show that, even if there are differences, there are many similarities as (...) well. I will address three issues: 1) the differences and similarities between Kuhn’s notion of paradigm and Heidegger’s notion of world; 2) the analogous concepts of “normal science” and “calculating thinking”; and 3) the source of intelligibility in both authors. This article will contrast two portrayals of Protagoras: one in the "Theaetetus," where Socrates discusses Protagorean theory and even comes to his defense by imitating the deceased sophist; and another in the "Protagoras," where Socrates recounts his encounter with the sophist. I suggest that Plato wants listeners and readers of the dialogues to hear the dissonance between the two portraits and to wonder why Socrates so distorts Protagoras in the "Theaetetus." Protagoras in the "Protagoras" behaves and speaks in ways that (...) are incompatible with the Protagorean position presented in the "Theaetetus." . (shrink)

En este artículo, se analiza la cuestión de si la existencia del derecho depende necesariamente de la moralidad. La cuestión que ha enfrentado a las doctrinas del derecho natural con el positivismo jurídico. Se trata de mostrar que dicho debate esconde, al menos tres cuestiones diferentes, que requieren respuestas diversas: 1) La cuestión semántica de si las normas positivas injustas son derecho, 2) la cuestión metafísica de si la existencia del contenido del derecho está fundada en hechos morales y 3) (...) la cuestión epistémica de si el contenido del derecho debe ser identificado sin recurrir a consideraciones morales. Se concluye que la primera cuestión es una mera disputa verbal. Se dan algunos argumentos para aceptar la tesis metafísica. Y una respuesta afirmativa a la tercera cuestión es puesta en duda analizando la doctrina de la autoridad de Joseph Raz y, también, tratando de mostrar que el hecho de que algo sea concebible no conlleva que sea metafísicamente posible. RESUMEN En este trabajo se analizan las principales ideas de John Rawls acerca de la naturaleza del derecho y del razonamiento jurídico. Partiendo de un trabajo de Ronald Dworkin (2004), y básicamente de acuerdo con él, se exponen las críticas dworkinianas a la doctrina rawlsiana de la razón pública, y se presenta un modo en el cual Rawls podría replicarlas. El objetivo del trabajo es mostrar la fecundidad de las ideas rawlsianas para nuestra concepción del derecho en sociedades democráticas, caracterizadas (...) por el hecho del pluralismo. (shrink)

In this paper, drawing on evidence internal to the Platonic dialogues (supplemented with some ancient testimonia), I answer the question, “How did Plato teach in the Academy?” My reconstruction of Plato’s pedagogy in the Academy is that there was a single person who read the dialogue aloud like a rhapsode (this is in contrast to the dramatic theatrical hypothesis, in which several speakers function as actors in the performance of a dialogue). After the rhapsodic reading, students were allowed to ask (...) that portions of the text to be re-read, to ask a question about the text, and were encouraged to enter into a broader conversation about the topic and themes brought out by the text. This later pedagogical method of interrogating and investigating a dialogue is of more importance than the mere reading of a dialogue. I contend that Plato’s experiences teaching were woven into some of the dialogues, and that Plato’s pedagogy reflects some of the ways that he taught in the Academy. I propose that excellent points made by students may have been written into revised forms of the dialogue. And not only good points, but also mistakes in reasoning may have been added into the dialogues. I suggest that the way certain dialogues are organized with “guest lecturers” and “tag-team” philosophical debates reflect Plato’s pedagogy in the Academy. Plato’s broadmindedness, his openness to various and opposing viewpoints, is also evident from both outside and inside of the dialogue. Lastly, drawing on the idea of Socratic mimēsis, I give a plausible curriculum for how Plato may have used the dialogues to teach them: he had his students “play” with them. Plato may have asked his students to enter into the roles of the characters in the dialogues to better understand them and the type of person they represent. Plato may have also asked students to take over from the position of the character in the dialogue and to suggest a better, truer account of things than what the characters said or did. (shrink)

This methodological discussion invites critical reflection about the procedures used to analyze the contribution of qualitative and mixed methods research to nursing trials by mounting an argument that these should rest on multiple publications produced about a project, rather than a single article. We illustrate the value‐added of this approach with findings from a qualitative, cross‐case analysis of three critical case exemplars from nursing researchers that each used a qualitative approach with a mixed method phase. The holistic lens afforded by (...) a case‐based approach informs nursing inquiry by documenting that the critical case exemplars presented evidence of (a) a sustained commitment of resources and expertise for the qualitative methods that extended across more than one phase of the trial, (b) the impact of the qualitative methods on the trial or its aftermath, (c) deploying a theoretical or conceptual framework for a variety of purposes, and (d) integrating qualitative and quantitative data for purposes of extending explanatory power. Findings challenge the practice of linking purposes served by qualitative and mixed methods to a single trial phase. (shrink)

En este artículo se plantea la hipótesis interpretativa de que una lectura retrospectiva de los textos en los que Emmanuel Lévinas se refirió a la muerte, permitiría captar si sus análisis estaban ya en los primeros trabajos de su formulación ético-metafísica, en la base del pluralismo del cara-a-cara. Con el fi n de mostrar esta hipótesis se revisan las menciones a la muerte en las obras levinasianas invirtiendo la habitual cronología ascendente.

En el presente trabajo se esclarece la noción de “información” según Gilbert Simondon, para lo cual se presenta el contexto histórico-epistemológico desde el cual surge y qué soluciones ofrece a la problemática de la época. Se hace especial énfasis en las conceptualizaciones realizadas por la teoría matemática de la información, la cibernética, y la biología. Luego, se analiza el devenir conceptual de la noción de “información” en el pensamiento de Simondon siguiendo tres momentos de su trabajo académico (clasificados por Juan (...) Manuel Heredia): a) 1944-1958, b) 1959-1968; y c) 1968-1983. Con ello, genero una idea más completa sobre su sentido. (shrink)

In the "Republic," Plato has Socrates attack poetry’s use of mimēsis, often translated as ‘imitation’ or ‘representation.’ Various scholars (e.g. Blondell 2002; Frank 2018; Halliwell 2009; K. Morgan 2004) have noticed the tension between Socrates’ theory critical of mimēsis and Plato’s literary practice of speaking through various characters in his dialogues. However, none of these scholars have addressed that it is not only Plato the writer who uses mimēsis but also his own character, Socrates. At crucial moments in several dialogues, (...) Socrates takes on a role and speaks as someone else. I call these moments “Socratic mimēsis.” While previous commentators have noticed some of these moments, they have either overstated their rarity or they have not studied them collectively. My dissertation is the first in-depth investigation of this phenomenon in the dialogues. Socrates’ dramatic imitation of others is way of teaching in a voice separate from his own, and it is also a way for Plato to speak to, and to educate, different kinds of audiences. Although “Socratic mimēsis” occurs throughout the Platonic corpus, I focus on three passages from three different dialogues, which are paradigm instances: [1] in the "Crito" Socrates plays the part of ‘the Laws’ (50a-54c); [2] in the "Theaetetus" he acts the part of ‘Protagoras’ (166a-168c); and [3] in the "Menexenus" he recites a funeral speech learned from ‘Aspasia’ (236d-249c). Instead of one-sidedly reading the dialogues as either only literary works of art or as only a series of philosophical arguments, this study gleans philosophic insights from the literary and dramatic details of the dialogues. In chapter one I argue that in the "Crito" Socrates tries to convince Crito of a universal and absolute ethics based on never committing injustice, but Crito is not able to understand. In order to make Crito more just—but not yet at the level of Socratic ethics—Socrates creates ‘the Laws’ to persuade Crito to expand his personal notion of justice. Socrates instills a political obedience in place of Crito’s existing lawlessness as a second-best recourse. Plato expects the astute listener or reader to see the contrast between Socrates’ earlier ethical principles, said in his own voice, with what he says in the voice of ‘the Laws.’ In chapter two I argue that in the part of the "Theaetetus" where Socrates defends Protagoras (often called ‘the Defense’), Socrates, by imitating ‘Protagoras,’ is actually criticizing Protagorean relativism. The Protagorean theory cannot account for mimēsis and Socrates’ mimetic act performatively contradicts the identity of appearance and reality, which the theory presupposes. Finally, in chapter three I argue that in the Menexenus the funeral oration that Socrates recounts for Menexenus that he heard from ‘Aspasia’ is actually a disguised criticism of political rhetoric and of Athenian imperialism. Although the speech is never interrogated within the dialogue, Plato provokes the listener or reader outside the dialogue to question its message and to see how it conflicts with many of Socrates’ positions in other dialogues. Beyond reconsidering the long-standing and persistent view that Plato was against poetry and mimetic performance, I re-examine the role that performance and role-playing can have in philosophy and pedagogy more generally. Actors, by taking on other personas, and audience members, in observing actors and their actions, are both involved in acts of imagination that can expand their horizon of thinking and feeling. Resumen El objetivo principal de este artículo es recrear la práctica de la hospitalidad en el contexto de la realidad migratoria actual, con la intención de aportar luz a la manera de gestionar la diversidad, de repensar la formación de identidad, de acercarnos a ciertas dinámicas políticas y últimamente de incentivar procesos de integración y cohesión social, especialmente en la vida de nuestros barrios. Para ello, el autor se adentra en las raíces bíblicas de la hospitalidad, aportando algunas claves para (...) entender esta virtud hoy. En nuestro mundo actual donde parecería ganar terreno la hostilidad sobre la hospitalidad, la práctica de la hospitalidad constituye un auténtico acto de resistencia.The main aim of this article is to recreate the practice of hospitality in the context of the current migratory reality, with the intention of bringing light to the way of managing diversity, of rethinking identity formation, of approaching certain political dynamics and lately to encourage processes of integration and social cohesion, especially in our vulnerable neighborhoods. For this purpose, the author delves into the biblical roots of hospitality, providing some clues to understand this virtue today. In our current world where hostility over hospitality seems to gain ground, the practice of hospitality constitutes a genuine act of resistance. (shrink)

Resumen En la década del noventa del último siglo apareció en Alemania el así denominado “giro icónico” (ikonische Wende). Keith Moxey (2009) interpretará este viraje como un nuevo paradigma que, harto del giro lingüístico y la tesis del acceso mediado a la realidad, propone a la imagen como una instancia de acceso inmediato al mundo, eliminando la distinción entre sujeto y objeto. Sin embargo, Boehm sostiene que el giro icónico debe entenderse a partir del giro de todos los giros, el (...) giro trascendental kantiano. La hipótesis que defenderé aquí es que el giro icónico debe entenderse como un pensamiento postkantiano. Abstract The 1990s saw the emergence in Germany of the so-called “iconic turn” (ikonische Wende). Keith Moxey (2009) interprets this turn as a new paradigm that, fed up with the linguistic turn and the thesis of mediated access to reality, proposes the image as an instance of immediate access to the world, eliminating the distinction between subject and object. However, Boehm argues that the iconic turn must be understood on the basis of the turn of all turns, the Kantian transcendental turn. The hypothesis I will defend here is that the iconic turn is to be understood as a post-Kantian thought. (shrink)

This study analyses the emotional exhaustion of students inhigher education, derived from the extremely technology-relatedstrain associated to the current COVID-19 pandemic in a conservation of resources’ approach. Technostress, as source of emotional exhaustion, was investigated in a sample of 333 students in a medium size public university in Spain. Data was collected in May 2020, during the COVID lockdown. After literature review, a structural model was developed, linking technostress with emotional exhaustion. Results confirm the expected cause-effect relationships. In addition, the (...) study reveals two mediator variables that must be considered when managing students′ suffering, perceived stress and intrapersonal conflicts. This study contributes to the academic literature in the field of managing and mitigating suffering. They do so by providing both new knowledge and empirical evidence on the effects of technostress in the new generations that will soon join the working life. (shrink)

La construcción de la identidad es un elemento constitutivo en el desarrollo vital de las personas y de los colectivos. En nuestro mundo actual globalizado y diverso, este elemento cobra una relevancia nuclear, más si cabe desde una mirada de los flujos migratorios y la integración social. Es en el día a día donde se juegan muchas de las dinámicas identitarias, en las que se entrelazan procesos de identidad personal y colectiva, tendencias más estáticas y dinámicas. El objetivo de este (...) trabajo es aportar luz a los modelos de integración y de cohesión social desde los procesos de construcción identitaria, en diálogo con el modelo de integración mixto. Para este fin, se ha presentado muy enriquecedor el dialogo entre el modelo de conductas mayoritarias y minoritarias de J. L. Segundo, el enfoque de las capacidades de A. En un Estado como el español en el que conviven distintas identidades nacionales las diferentes ideas y discursos que han existido con relación a la nación española han dado lugar a diferentes actitudes hacia la pluralidad etnocultural y nacional existente, así como a decisiones políticas dispares con relación a educación, cultura, políticas lingüísticas, etc. Este estudio analiza la presencia a lo largo del tiempo de tres concepciones fundamentales en este sentido: la visión étnica tradicional de la nación, claramente obsoleta, y (...) los más relevantes patriotismo constitucional y patriotismo de la pluralidad. El concepto de patriotismo de agregación que aquí se presenta, y su discurso correspondiente, aspiran a trascender lo que se consideran limitaciones de las concepciones señaladas. Este modelo apela a una cultura común de referencia como fundamento de identificación con la nación española, al tiempo que no resulta excluyente sino compatible con otras identidades etno-nacionales dentro del Estado. At the end of the first hypothesis, Parmenides gets Aristotle to agree that being [οὐσίας] must be in time; that is, that being must partake in at least one of the temporal modes: either to have been in the past, to be in the present, or it will be in the future (140e-142a). If this is true, then “the one does not partake in being” (141e7-8), meaning temporal being—to which Aristotle agrees, saying “Apparently not” (141e9). Parmenides then gets Aristotle to (...) agree that “Therefore, ‘the one’ in no way is” (141e9-10). This, however, contradicts the very first premise that begins Parmenides’ entire gymnastic exercise, “if one is” (137c4). The problem with the previous conclusion—that to be is to be in time—is that in professing his assent to it, Aristotle, in fact, gainsays it. He performatively contradicts the very thing he wants to assert. Aristotle answers Parmenides question, “Therefore could something partake of being in any way other than in one of those ways?” (141e7-8) with a two-word answer in Greek: “οὐκ ἔστιν [It’s not possible].” We can, therefore, ask of the very claim Aristotle is making—that it is impossible for something to be and not be in time—when in time does it hold true? At what time is it “not possible [οὐκ ἔστιν]” for something to not partake of temporal being? Is it not possible only in the present moment, in the past, or in the future? If Aristotle’s assertion is to have any force it must hold always. It has the same tenselessness as mathematical propositions, like ‘1+1=2.’ Forms, like mathematical entities, must necessarily have atemporal existence. Accordingly, in atemporally maintaining that anything that is must be in time, Aristotle undermines his own assertion. He performatively contradicts the very thing that he wants to affirm. (shrink)

En el presente trabajo nos proponemos analizar la lectura de Martin Heidegger en la _Estética operatoria_ por parte de Luis Juan Guerrero. La tesis a defender consiste en que “El origen de la obra de arte” tiene un rol central en la obra del filósofo argentino. Pero esto no quiere decir que Guerrero no sea un autor original o que sea un mero comentador del filósofo alemán, sino todo lo contrario: el filósofo argentino hace una lectura productiva de Heidegger a (...) partir de la cual elabora una filosofía propia y auténtica. Centrándonos en el ensayo sobre el arte de Heidegger y el primer tomo de la _Estética operatoria_, analizaremos tres puntos neurálgicos: el concepto de útil, la relación mundo y tierra y el vínculo entre historia y verdad. In this essay, I propose a reading of two contrasting passions, two kinds of erōs, in the "Symposium." On the one hand, there is the imperialistic desire for conquering and possessing that Alcibiades represents; and on the other hand, there is the productive love of immortal wisdom that Diotima represents. It’s not just what Alcibiades says in the Symposium, but also what he symbolizes. Alcibiades gives a speech in honor of Socrates and of his unrequited love for him, but even (...) here Alcibiades recounts his attempted seduction of Socrates as a failed conquest, as an unsuccessful attempt to violently take possession of something that Socrates has within him. Even more importantly, in 416 BCE (the dramatic date of Agathon’s symposium) Alcibiades was soon to encourage his fellow countrymen to set off on the ruinous Sicilian expedition. Alcibiades’s actions behind-the-scenes of the "Symposium" reveal the clearest manifestation of his imperialistic erōs (for political power in Athens). They also constitute some necessary background to the dialogue, which Plato’s Athenian readers would have had in mind. Where else can we catch a glimpse of this disastrous desire? It is best illustrated in Thucydides’s "History." I show that the beginnings of this political passion can already be seen in Pericles’s funeral oration (2.35-46, specifically 2.43.1) and that after Pericles’s death, Alcibiades stokes this erōs to such a fevered pitch that the Athenians agree to launch the tragic venture against Sicily. Opposed to this political passion, is Diotima’s. She tries to reorient this misguided erōs and presents an alternative form of desire for everlasting wisdom (philosophia). (shrink)

RESUMEN En este trabajo me propongo demostrar que el concepto de dios en "El origen de la obra de arte" de Martin Heidegger no refiere a una figura divino-religiosa, sino que se debe enmarcar dentro del leitmotiv de toda su filosofía, la pregunta por el ser. La hipótesis a defender será la siguiente: Heidegger utiliza la noción de "dios" para describir el proceso de fundación de un espacio de sentido. En un primer momento analizaré algunos contraargumentos a esta hipótesis, según (...) los cuales Heidegger estaría hablando de la posibilidad de que el arte nos religue con los dioses como tales. Luego pasaré al argumento principal, en el que vincularé el ensayo sobre el arte fundamentalmente con el seminario sobre Parménides para mostrar cómo la noción de dios se conecta con el concepto de ser y de sentido. ABSTRACT In this essay I try to demonstrate that the concept of God in "The Origin of the Work of Art" by Martin Heidegger does not refer to a divine-religious figure but must be framed within the Leitmotiv of all his philosophy, the question of being. The hypothesis to be defended will be the following: Heidegger uses the notion of "god" to describe the process of founding a space of meaning. First, I will analyze some counter arguments to this hypothesis, according to which Heidegger would be talking about the possibility that art reconnects us with the gods as such. Then, I will move on to the main argument in which I will link the essay on art fundamentally with the seminary on Parmenides to show how the notion of God is linked to the concept of being and meaning. Muchos comentadores leyeron “El origen de la obra de arte” de Martin Heidegger desde su compromiso político con el nacionalsocialismo. ¿Es el ensayo sobre el arte una encarnación de su verdadera posición política? El objetivo de esta investigación es volver a explorar los vínculos de esta obra de Heidegger con el nacionalsocialismo a la luz de algunos fragmentos de los llamados Cuadernos negros, en especial los del tomo 94 de la Gesamtausgabe que recopila las notas elaboradas por el filósofo entre (...) 1932 y 1938, años en los que se gestaron y expusieron las diferentes versiones de “El origen de la obra de arte”. La hipótesis que defiendo en este trabajo es que leer el ensayo sobre el arte desde su compromiso político es una interpretación injustificada. Se demostrará que, en los años que se gestaba y exponía el ensayo, Heidegger era crítico de las políticas culturales y artísticas en tiempos nacionalsocialistas. Con esto no pretendo ni negar la dimensión política en sentido general que puede llegar a tener el escrito, ni mucho menos la comprobada e indiscutible adhesión de Heidegger al nazismo. Pero si nos preguntamos si esto último es relevante para su filosofía del arte, la respuesta, a mi modo de ver, es que no. (shrink)

En 1935 Martin Heidegger da sorpresivamente una conferencia en Friburgo sobre el origen de la obra de arte. ¿Por qué Heidegger, repentinamente, brinda una conferencia sobre el arte? ¿Por qué aparece en este año “el arte” como una cuestión decisiva? Solamente encontramos breves menciones sobre esta temática en sus trabajos previos al ensayo sobre el arte. ¿Cómo encuadrar este aparente “oasis” en el pensamiento heideggeriano? A partir del académico estadounidense William Richardson la obra de Martin Heidegger se suele dividir en (...) dos grandes momentos separados por lo que es conocido por el viraje. ¿Desde dónde deberíamos abordar la obra? ¿deberíamos entender sus planteos desde lo trabajado en Aportes a la filosofía? ¿o deberíamos ingresar a “El origen de la obra de arte” desde las obras del primer Heidegger? Estos interrogantes, de carácter metodológico-interpretativo, son los que nos proponemos contestar a lo largo del trabajo, buscando defender la siguiente hipótesis: “El origen de la obra de arte” es una obra “de frontera” entre estos dos momentos del pensamiento de Heidegger, razón por la cual requiere de un abordaje de “ida y vuelta” entre el primer y el segundo Heidegger. Este trabajo pretende analizar la caracterización por parte de Heidegger de la esencia de la obra de arte como "poética" en "El origen de la obra de arte". ¿Qué puede llegar a significar esto? ¿Se puede reducir la esencia de la obra de arte a un tipo de arte? Abordaremos este problema interpretativo fundamentalmente de Ser y tiempo,aunque también nos serviremos de la conferencia "Hölderlin y la esencia de la poesía". "Poético" se refiere a un ámbito más amplio que el (...) del género literario, se refiere al espacio donde se da la verdad, entendida siempre como desocultación. La tesis por defender es que lo que Heidegger comprende por "poesía" en el ensayo sobre el arte es el lenguaje entendido como fuente de inteligibilidad o comprensibilidad, es decir, como aquello que permite al ente manifestarse como ente, abre el espacio de sentido que le permite mostrarse. In this paper I aim to analyze Guerrero's position as a reader of Heidegger, particularly the conceptual continuities and discontinuities between the Argentine philosopher's methodological proposal of an "operative aesthetic" and the essay on the art of the German thinker. We will concentrate on the first volume, Estética operatoria en tres direcciones. Revelación y acogimiento de la obra de arte and the essay "The origin of the work of art". Our hypothesis is that Guerrero is an anthropophagous reader: While Guerrero (...) support some of Heidegger's proposals in his essay on art, the Argentine philosopher is also critical and from the reading of “The origin of the work of art” he elaborates an original thought. Specifically Guerrero takes, I state, the phenomenological-hermeneutical methodology and applies it in an original way to the analysis of the work of art. (shrink)

Resumimos la información aportada por estudios científicos recientes sobre las opiniones, visiones y actitudes de los cazadores españoles sobre la caza y su gestión. En concreto, discutimos las distintas funciones que atribuyen los cazadores a la actividad cinegética, así como los juicios morales asociados a diversas motivaciones para cazar. Seguidamente, exploramos las valoraciones expresadas por cazadores y gestores respecto a ciertas herramientas de gestión cinegética, y discutimos sobre cómo éstas influyen en la toma de decisiones. Por último, exploramos las posibles (...) tendencias futuras de esta actividad, a partir de lo expresado por los propios cazadores. (shrink)

The digitization of society and academic research endeavours have led to an explosion of interest in the potential uses of population data in research. Alongside this, increasing attention is focussing on the conditions necessary for maintaining a social license for research practices. Previous research has pointed to the importance of demonstrating “public benefits” from research for maintaining public support, yet there has been very little consideration of what the term “public benefits” means or what public expectations of “public benefits” are. (...) In order to address this pressing issue a series of deliberative workshops with members of the public were held across Scotland in May and June 2017. The workshops aimed to engage a cross-section of the Scottish population in in-depth discussions of the ways that the public – or publics – might benefit from data-intensive health research. The findings reported here discuss workshop participants’ understandings and expectations of health research; who they considered to be “the public” that should benefit from health research and; in what ways they felt “the public” should benefit. Workshop participants’ preference was clearly for the widest possible public benefit to be felt by all, but they also acknowledged the value in research aiming to primarily benefit vulnerable groups within society. A key focus of discussions was the extent to which workshop participants were confident that potential public benefits would be realised. A crucial consideration then is the extent to which mechanisms and political support are in place to realise and maximise the public benefits of data-intensive health research. (shrink)
