Goodbye Gauley Mountain, hello eco-camp: Queer environmentalism in the Anthropocene.Lauran Whitworth - 2019 - Feminist Theory 20 (1):73-92.
This article considers the effectiveness of queer environmental ethics in the Anthropocene, a word increasingly used to describe the anthropogenic destruction of ecosystems that marks our current geological era. Taking as my subject the contemporary ecosexuality movement popularised by performance artists Annie Sprinkle and her co-collaborator and partner Elizabeth Stephens, I explore the ethics behind ecosexuals’ encounters with the natural environment. Stephens and Sprinkle's performances, captured in their documentary Goodbye Gauley Mountain: An Ecosexual Love Story (2013), make clear ecosexuality's concurrent (...)

Consuming, Engaging and Confronting Science: The Emerging Dimensions of Scientific Citizenship.Margareta Bertilsson & Mark Elam - 2003 - European Journal of Social Theory 6 (2):233-251.
As the distance between science and society is collapsed with the growth of contemporary knowledge societies, so a range of different approaches to the democratic governance of science superseding its Enlightenment government is emerging. In light of these different approaches, this article focuses on the figure of the scientific citizen and the variable dimensions of a new scientific citizenship. Three models of democracy - advanced consumer, deliberative and radical/pluralist - are put forward as both partly competing and partly complementary frameworks (...)

  4. Feminism and deconstruction: Ms. en abyme.Diane Elam - 1994 - New York: Routledge.
Feminism and Deconstruction incisively examines the contemporary relevance of setting these movements beside one another. Diane Elam has written an intelligent and accessible introduction, which explores how feminism and deconstruction have been linked -- as theories and movements, as philosophies and disciplines. Elam's work allows the reader to rethink the political and contemplate the possibility that there is indeed life after identity politics. Feminism and Deconstruction is essential reading for anyone who needs a no-nonsense but stimulating guide through (...)

Living Dangerously with Bruno Latour in a Hybrid World.Mark Elam - 1999 - Theory, Culture and Society 16 (4):1-24.
This article critically engages with the work of Bruno Latour and, in particular, his book We Have Never Been Modern. Looking beyond the wit and brevity of Latour's writing, the article focuses on some of the non-innocent aspects of his vision of a non-modern world. Rather than completely rejecting the `Great Divides' between Nature and Culture, Westerners and non-Westerners, Latour is seen as only interested in erasing these major fault lines of modernity in order to draw them anew. Ultimately, Latour (...)

  7. Metabolic theories of Whipple disease.Oscar Morice, Mathew Elameer, Mina Arsanious, Helen Stephens, Eleanor Soutter, Thomas Hughes & Brendan Clarke - manuscript
Whipple disease is a rare, infectious, disease first described from a single case by Whipple in 1907. As well as characterising the clinical and pathological features of the condition, Whipple made two suggestions regarding its aetiology. These were either than the disease was caused by an infectious agent, or that it was of metabolic origin. As the disease is now thought to be caused by infection with the bacterium Tropheryma whipplei, historical reviews of the history of the disease typically mention (...)

IoT network security using autoencoder deep neural network and channel access algorithm.Mustafa Musa Jaber, Amer S. Elameer & Saif Mohammed Ali - 2021 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 31 (1):95-103.
Internet-of-Things (IoT) creates a significant impact in spectrum sensing, information retrieval, medical analysis, traffic management, etc. These applications require continuous information to perform a specific task. At the time, various intermediate attacks such as jamming, priority violation attacks, and spectrum poisoning attacks affect communication because of the open nature of wireless communication. These attacks create security and privacy issues while making data communication. Therefore, a new method autoencoder deep neural network (AENN) is developed by considering exploratory, evasion, causative, and priority (...)

Ist Andronikos Synadenos um die Mitte des 12. Jahrhunderts in normannische Gefangenschaft geraten?Alexandra-Kyriaki Wassiliou-Seibt & Üyesi Nilgün Elam - 2021 - Byzantinische Zeitschrift 114 (1):163-170.
The museum of Trebizond houses a seal with a metrical legend of special interest, documenting a Synadenos, who had for some time been in a Sicilian prison but managed to escape, and thanks the apostle Thomas for this liberation. He might be Andronikos Synadenos, the husband of Theodora Komnene, a daughter of Alexios I, who served with distinction as general and as diplomat. As a military commander he maintained order in several border regions such as Dyrrachion, Niš, Cyprus, and finally (...)

Female Audit Partners and Extended Audit Reporting: UK Evidence.Tarek Abdelfattah, Mohamed Elmahgoub & Ahmed A. Elamer - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 174 (1):177-197.
This study investigates whether audit partner gender is associated with the extent of auditor disclosure and the communication style regarding risks of material misstatements that are classified as key audit matters. Using a sample of UK firms during the 2013–2017 period, our results suggest that female audit partners are more likely than male audit partners to disclose more KAMs with more details after controlling for both client and audit firm attributes. Furthermore, female audit partners are found to use a less (...)

Differences Between Posttraumatic Growth and Resiliency: Their Distinctive Relationships With Empathy and Emotion Recognition Ability.Taylor Elam & Kanako Taku - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Posttraumatic growth and resiliency have been observed among people who experienced life crises. Given that the direct relationships between PTG and resiliency have been equivocal, it is important to know how they are different in conjunction with cognitive ability. The purpose of this study is to examine how perceived PTG and resiliency would be, respectively, associated with empathy and emotion recognition ability. A total of 420 college students participated in an online survey requiring them to identify emotions based on photographs (...)

    Is reflex sympathetic dystrophy a valid concept?Mikael Elam - 1997 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 20 (3):447-448.
Patients with reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) affecting one limb show similar sympathetic traffic in nerves supplying the affected and unaffected limb, despite unilateral autonomic effector dysfunction. This argues against the notion that RSD is mediated by a reflex change in the pattern of sympathetic discharge and underlines the fact that autonomic effector disturbances give little information about underlying nerve traffic. [blumberg et al.].

Meaning in History.Noa Gedi & Yigal Elam - 2018 - Proceedings of the XXIII World Congress of Philosophy 52:11-15.
The heated and unresolved debate in philosophy of history evoked by Hempel’s suggestion that the deductive-nomological model of explanation is equally applicable to the natural sciences and history, has unintentionally led to a distorted conception of what it is to explain in history. We argue that explanation in history, at its best, is contingent not on general laws, not even on consequentiality, but on labels as frames of meaning. These labels further serve as a basis for eliciting models which help (...)

The Artificial Enclave: Redefining Culture.Noa Gedi & Yigal Elam - 2020 - Eidos. A Journal for Philosophy of Culture 4 (1):70-87.
This article offers a new definition of culture which hinges on what we consider to be its most distinctive feature, namely its artificiality. Our definition enables us to resolve some of the main issues and controversies involved in the concept of culture and its course of development. We argue that the large human brain played a revolutionary role in inverting the course of natural adaptation of the human species. This dramatic turnabout allowed humans to set their own conditions of existence (...)

Corporate Accountability Towards Species Extinction Protection: Insights from Ecologically Forward-Thinking Companies.Lee Roberts, Monomita Nandy, Abeer Hassan, Suman Lodh & Ahmed A. Elamer - 2022 - Journal of Business Ethics 178 (3):571-595.
This paper contributes to biodiversity and species extinction literature by examining the relationship between corporate accountability in terms of species protection and factors affecting such accountability from forward-thinking companies. We use triangulation of theories, namely deep ecology, legitimacy, and we introduce a new perspective to the stakeholder theory that considers species as a ‘stakeholder’. Using Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood regression, we examine a sample of 200 Fortune Global companies over 3 years. Our results indicate significant positive relations between ecologically conscious companies (...)

Islamic Governance, National Governance, and Bank Risk Management and Disclosure in MENA Countries.Hussein A. Abdou, Collins G. Ntim & Ahmed A. Elamer - 2020 - Business and Society 59 (5):914-955.
We examine the relationships among religious governance, especially Islamic governance quality (IGQ), national governance quality (NGQ), and risk management and disclosure practices (RDPs), and consequently ascertain whether NGQ has a moderating influence on the IGQ–RDPs nexus. Using one of the largest data sets relating to Islamic banks from 10 Middle East and North Africa (MENA) countries from 2006 to 2013, our findings are threefold. First, we find that RDPs are higher in banks with higher IGQ. Second, we find that RDPs (...)

Radiography image analysis using cat swarm optimized deep belief networks.Sura Khalil Abd, Mustafa Musa Jaber & Amer S. Elameer - 2021 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 31 (1):40-54.
Radiography images are widely utilized in the health sector to recognize the patient health condition. The noise and irrelevant region information minimize the entire disease detection accuracy and computation complexity. Therefore, in this study, statistical Kolmogorov–Smirnov test has been integrated with wavelet transform to overcome the de-noising issues. Then the cat swarm-optimized deep belief network is applied to extract the features from the affected region. The optimized deep learning model reduces the feature training cost and time and improves the overall (...)

Is There a Trade-Off Between Accrual-Based and Real Earnings Management Activities in the Presence of (fe) Male Auditors?Andrews Owusu, Alaa Mansour Zalata, Kamil Omoteso & Ahmed A. Elamer - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 175 (4):815-836.
Prior research suggests that the presence of high-quality auditors constrains accrual-based earnings management, but it inadvertently leads to higher real activities manipulation. We investigate whether such trade-off exists between accrual-based and real earnings management activities in the presence of female or male auditors. We use a sample of UK firms for the period 2009 to 2016 and find that firms audited by female auditors do not resort to a higher-level real activities manipulation when their ability to engage in accruals management (...)

    The origin of Memnon.R. Drew Griffith - 1998 - Classical Antiquity 17 (2):212-234.
This article endorses with substantial modifications M. Bernal's claim that the Greeks based Memnon on Ammenemes II of Egypt. An Egyptian origin for Memnon appears likely from Zeus' weighing of his fate against Achilles' in the Aethiopis, which is similar to an early spell of the Book of the Dead; from his Amazonian ally, who resembles the Nile-god, clad in a girdle with a single breast; and from his apotheosis, which is unlike Homer's usual view that the soul is witless (...)
