Analogical Propositions in Moist Texts.Jinmei Yuan - 2012 - Journal of Chinese Philosophy 39 (3):404-423.
This article is an effort to improve understanding between Moist and Aristotelian logics on analogy. I argue that Chinese logic can neither fit in Aristotelian deductive framework, nor completely fit in Aristotelian inductive framework. One of the major reasoning skills that ancient Chinese logicians applied is analogical reasoning. Having examined thirteen Moist analogical propositions in a Moist text, the Da Qu 〈大取〉from the perspective of finding rationales (li 理) among things, I conclude that if the rationales can be found in (...)

Electrophysiological Correlates of Processing Warning Signs With Different Background Colors: An Event-Related Potentials Investigation.Jingpeng Yuan, Zhipeng Song, Ying Hu, Huijian Fu, Xiao Liu & Jun Bian - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Warning signs, as a type of safety signs, are widely applied in our daily lives to informing people about potential hazards and prompting safe behavior. Although previous studies have paid attention to the color of warning signs, they are mostly based on surveys and behavioral experiments. The neural substrates underlying the perception of warning signs with different background colors remain not clearly characterized. Therefore, this research is intended to address this gap with event-related potentials technique. Warning signs with three different (...)

  4. The role of time in the structure of chinese logic.Jinmei Yuan - 2006 - Philosophy East and West 56 (1):136-152.
Ancient Chinese logicians presupposed no fixed order in the world. Things are changing all the time. Time, then, plays a crucial role in the structure of Chinese logic. This article uses the concept of "subjective time" and the Leibnizian concept of "possible worlds" to analyze the structure of logic in the Later Mohist Canon and in the logical reasoning of other early Chinese philosophers. The author argues that Chinese logic is structured in the time of the now. This time is (...)

Thinking through Sets: Exploring How Chinese Pictographic Language Shapes Chinese Logic.Jinmei Yuan - 2023 - Athens Journal of Philosophy 2 (4):247-276.
The author of this paper argues that ancient Chinese thinkers practiced an alternative logic that is significantly different from Aristotelian logic. The paper has two objectives: 1) to clarify what Chinese logic looks like; 2) to re-evaluate the wisdom in classic texts with a clear understanding of Chinese logic. The author uses two major approaches in her reasoning: an etymological approach and logic of sets. An etymological study shows that Chinese pictographic characters were created according to sets - the collections (...)

Risk Propagation Model and Simulation of Schedule Change in Construction Projects: A Complex Network Approach.Yusi Cheng, Jingfeng Yuan, Lei Zhu & Wei Li - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-12.
Construction schedules play an important role in construction project management. However, during construction activities, risks may arise due to unexpected schedule changes, resulting in the ineffective delivery of projects. This study aims to reveal the law of schedule change risk propagation and to analyze the effects on the risk propagation through numerical simulations. First, construction projects are represented by activity-on-node networks. A model of risk propagation is then built based on a susceptible-infected model considering the effects of the nodal characteristics (...)

Meridian-Specific and Post-Optical Deficits of Spatial Vision in Human Astigmatism: Evidences From Psycho-Physical and EEG Scalings.Li Gu, Yiyao Wang, Lei Feng, Saiqun Li, Mengwei Zhang, Qingqing Ye, Yijing Zhuang, Zhong-Lin Lu, Jinrong Li & Jin Yuan - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Previous studies have demonstrated that orientation-specific deprivation in early life can lead to neural deficits of spatial vision in certain space, and can even result in meridional amblyopia. Individuals with astigmatism are the optimal and natural models for exploring this asymmetric development of spatial vision in the human visual system. This study aims to assess the contrast sensitivity function and EEG signals along two principal meridians in participants with regular astigmatism when being optimal optical corrected. Twelve participants with astigmatism and (...)

Abusive Supervision, Leader-Member Exchange, and Creativity: A Multilevel Examination.Changqing He, Rongrong Teng, Liying Zhou, Valerie Lynette Wang & Jing Yuan - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Despite the growing attention on the topic of abusive supervision, how abusive supervision affects individual and team creativity have not yet been thoroughly investigated. Drawn from the perspective of leader-member exchange (LMX), the current study develops a multilevel model to describe the relationships between abusive supervision and creativity at both team and individual levels, with a focus on the roles played by team-level leader-member exchange (TLMX) and LMX differentiation (DLMX). Based on data collected from 319 team members and their team (...)

Modulating break types induces divergent low band EEG processes during post-break improvement: A power spectral analysis.Sujie Wang, Li Zhu, Lingyun Gao, Jingjia Yuan, Gang Li, Yu Sun & Peng Qi - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16:960286.
Conventional wisdom suggests mid-task rest as a potential approach to relieve the time-on-task (TOT) effect while accumulating evidence indicated that acute exercise might also effectively restore mental fatigue. However, few studies have explored the neural mechanism underlying these different break types, and the results were scattered. This study provided one of the first looks at how different types of fatigue-recovery break exerted influence on the cognitive processes by evaluating the corresponding behavioral improvement and neural response (EEG power spectral) in a (...)

  14. Can Aristotelian Logic Be Translated Into Chinese: Could There Be a Chinese "Harry Stottlemeier"?Jinmei Yuan - 2000 - Dissertation, University of Hawai'i
This dissertation is a comparative study of Aristotelian and Chinese logic. I briefly overview the reports of difficulties in understanding that derives from cultural differences. I claim that these difficulties not only result from the fact that concepts in each language fail to match properly, but also from the fact that the logical spaces themselves are structured differently. Aristotelian logic is based on the structure of a classificatory system---a hierarchical structure of names for kinds of things organized into genera/species. Chinese (...)

Evolutionary Game Analysis of Construction Workers' Unsafe Behaviors Based on Incentive and Punishment Mechanisms.Jianbo Zhu, Ce Zhang, Shuyi Wang, Jingfeng Yuan & Qiming Li - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Construction is one of the most dangerous industries because of its open working environment and risky construction conditions. In the process of construction, risk events cause great losses for owners and workers. Most of the risk events are closely related to unsafe behaviors of workers. Therefore, it is of great significance for contractors to establish management measures, e.g., incentive and punishment mechanism, to induce workers to reduce unsafe behaviors. This paper aims to take the incentive and punishment mechanism into consideration (...)
