Since the beginning of the 20th Century to the present day, it has rarely been doubted that whenever formal aesthetic methods meet their iconological counterparts, the two approaches appear to be mutually exclusive. In reality, though, an ahistorical concept is challenging a historical analysis of art. It is especially Susanne K. Langer´s long-overlooked system of analogies between perceptions of the world and of artistic creations that are dependent on feelings which today allows a rapprochement of these positions. Krois’s insistence (...) on a similar point supports this analysis. - I - Unbestritten bis heute gilt, formwissenschaftliche und ikonologische Methoden scheinen sich grundsätzlich auszuschließen, da die ersteren auf ahistorischen und die letzteren auf historischen Grundlagen aufbauen. Dem entgegen soll mit diesem Beitrag gezeigt werden, wie insbesondere die Forschungen Susanne K. Langers und ergänzend diejenigen von John M. Krois eine Annäherung beider Positionen ermöglichen. Religion has returned as a political and cultural factor. After the political ideologies, whose secular and worldly promises of salvation had influenced the history of the 20th century in such a radical manner, had been invalidated, the reappearance of religion on a global level cannot be overlooked: as a focal power as to how to conduct one’s life, as a guarantor of cultural identity, and as religious-political creativity. We cannot understand the current state of the world, its crises, conflicts and (...) wars, but also the selfperception and self-awareness of non-European cultures and peoples anymore, if we do not also realise that religion as a “power of life” has returned. In addition to sketching this process, this essay raises the question: what are the cultural and political challenges which especially the secular societies of the West are to face? (shrink)

Jahrhunderts durchgreifend bestimmt haben, entkräftet worden sind, kann die Wiedererscheinung der Religion auf der globalen Ebene nicht vernachlässigt werden: als brennende Lebensmacht in puncto Führung des Eigenlebens, als Garant der kulturellen Identität sowie als religiös-politische Kreativität. Wir können die aktuelle Weltlage, ihre Krisen, Konflikte samt Kriegen, aber auch die Selbstperzeption und das Selbstbewusstsein außereuropäischer Kulturen und (...) Völker nicht mehr begreifen, ohne zeitgleich einzusehen, die Religion sei als Webers „Lebensmacht“ wiedergekehrt. Im Anhang zur Skizzierung dieses Prozesses stellt dieser Artikel die Frage: Welche sind die kulturellen und politischen Herausforderungen, mit denen insbesondere die säkularen Gesellschaften des Westens konfrontiert werden? Published in 1686, the Discourse on Metaphysics consists of the philosopher's explanation of individual perception as an expression of the rest of the universe from a unique perspective. Diese Zeit war angefullt mit einer Vielzahl von juristischen, politischen, philosophischen, theologischen und anderen Projekten und Uberlegungen. Leibniz hat spater selbst mehrfach auf diese Phase als besonders pragend fur seine weiteren Studien Bezug genommen. (...) En 1684 le tout nouveau periodique edite a Leipzig, les Acta Eruditorum, publie le texte fondateur du calcul leibnizien: Nova methodus pro maximis et minimis. Ce n'etait pas le premier article de Leibniz dans cette revue et ce ne sera pas le dernier. De 1682 a 1713 s'echelonnent des publications, aujourd'hui classiques, sur l'Isochrone, la Chainette, la Brachystochrone, etc. Ce volume en reunit vingt-six, en majorite traduites pour la premiere fois en langue francaise. Leur selection fut essentiellement guidee par la (...) volonte de mettre a la portee du lecteur les principaux ecrits mathematiques de Leibniz consacres au calcul differentiel et integral. Outre les resultats scientifiques, on decouvrira dans ces textes l'interet epistemologique de Leibniz pour l'invention, la methode, l'histoire et son souci d'une ethique de la recherche. (shrink)

These are supplemented with two essays of special interest to the student of modern philosophy, _On the Ultimate Origination of Things_ of 1697 and the Preface to his New Essays of 1703-1705. In General Inquiries on the Analysis of Notions and Truths, Leibniz articulates for the first time his favourite solution to the problem of contingency and displays the main features of his logical calculus. Leibniz composed the work in 1686, the same year in which he began to correspond with Arnauld and wrote the Discourse on Metaphysics. General Inquiries supplements these contemporary entries in Leibniz's philosophical oeuvre and demonstrates the intimate connection that links Leibniz's philosophy with the attempt to create a (...) new kind of logic. This edition presents the text and translation of the General Inquiries along with an introduction and commentary. Given the composite structure of the text, where logic and metaphysics strongly intertwine, Mugnai's introduction falls into two sections, respectively dedicated to logic and metaphysics. The first section ('Logic') begins with a preliminary account of Leibniz's project for a universal characteristic and focuses on the relationships between rational grammar and logic, and discusses the general structure and the main ingredients of Leibniz's logical calculus. The second section ('Metaphysics') is centred on the problem of contingency, which occupied Leibniz until the end of his life. Mugnai provides an account of the problem, and details Leibniz's proposed solution, based on the concept of infinite analysis. (shrink)
