Elfriede Jelinek's novel Die Klavierspielerin describes a segment in the life of a piano-teacher,Erika Kohut, who, having failed to succeed as a concert pianist, teaches at the conservatory. Erika stilllives at home under the domination of her mother, who forbids Erika from engaging in relationships.Erika's forms of sexual release are either voyeuristic or sado-masochistic. The novel focuses on a time inher life during which she attempts to develop a relationship with a student. It is an attempt which fails,leaving (...) Erika in the same position she was at the start of the novel.Die Klavierspielerin contains many themes and motifs which provoke a psychoanalytic reading, yetsurprisingly few critics have chosen to examine it in this light. Such a reading is prompted not only by thepresence of themes such as sexuality, desire, the body, the self, the gaze; but also by the form of thenovel. The novel has some peculiar structural aspects, which have seemingly gone hitherto unnoticed. Inthe first part of the novel there are four clearly separated texts, which are stylistically quite unlike those ofthe rest of the novel, although the themes are similar. The present article proposes a reading of the novel Elfriede Jelinek’s The Piano Teacher as a deconstruction of the configuration of female sexuality in Freud. For this, it investigates the theoretical elaborations of Foucault and Derrida and the main elements of the differentiation of Freudian female sexuality: preoedipal phase, mother-daughter bond, castration fantasy. Finally, we try to show that The Piano Teacher deconstructs the way in which psychoanalytic discourses install subjectivation regimes that place women in a position of (...) inferiority. (shrink)

Rather than choose between competing theories of alienation, whether Marxist, feminist, or psychoanalytic, this chapter argues that each theory has its value for a critical understanding of Jelinek’s literary work. At the level of the “signified or plot,” the author finds that Marxist theories of alienation through labor, and feminist theories of alienation in patriarchy, are both helpful frameworks for exploring the situations represented in the novel. Der Beitrag setzt an der Form und Dynamik von Freuds Text »Jenseits des Lustprinzips« an und zeigt Denkmöglichkeiten auf, die er eröffnet. Eine Skizze zum Lesen und Wiederlesen vorausschickend geht der Beitrag in vier Schritten vor: Zunächst stellt er die Bedeutung des Stummen als Merkmal des Freud’schen Todestriebs ins Zentrum. Zweitens befasst er sich mit dem Konzept der Triebmischung und -entmischung und stellt dar, auf welche Weise es in die spätere Theoriebildung Freuds und anderer Autoren eingeflossen ist. Drittens zieht er (...) anhand einer Re-Lektüre des »Fort-Da«-Spiels eine Verbindungslinie von der Stummheit über die Trieb(ent)mischung hin zur Symbolisierung. In einem abschließenden Schritt werden die verschiedenen Argumentationsstränge zu einer Interpretation des Textes zusammengeführt: Freuds Denken und Schreiben, das die Autorin als »dekonstruierend« versteht, erlaubt nach ihrer Auffassung, Zusammenhänge zwischen psychischer Repräsentanz und Todestrieb zu postulieren und im Todestriebkonzept einen Beitrag zur Frage der Subjektkonstitution zu erkennen. Plato’s Timaeus reveals a cosmos governed by Necessity and Intellect; commentators have debated the relationship between them. Non-literalists hold that the demiurge, having carte blanche in taming Necessity, is omnipotent. But this omnipotence, alongside the attributes of benevolence and omniscience, creates problems when non-literalists address the problem of evil. We take the demiurge rather as limited by Necessity. This position is supported by episodes within the text, and by its larger consonance with Plato’s philosophy of evil and responsibility. By recognizing (...) the analogy between man and demiurge, the literal reading provides a moral component that its non-literal counterpart lacks. (shrink)

Der Beitrag plädiert dafür, psychoanalytische Erfahrung, psychoanalytisches Denken und psychoanalytische Methoden in die interdisziplinäre Forschung zur Digitalisierung einzubringen. Er schlägt insbesondere einen Dialog mit der Medientheorie vor und zeigt Schnittstellen zu dieser auf. In einem kurzen historischen Abriss wird daran erinnert, in welcher Weise psychoanalytische Ansätze seit den Anfängen sozial-, kultur- und medienwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen zu Computer und Internet involviert waren. Verschiedene psychoanalytische Diskurslinien werden beschrieben und diskutiert; im Zentrum steht die Frage, ob es Grund gibt zu der Annahme, dass sich (...) im kulturellen Prozess der Digitalisierung wesentliche Strukturen der Subjektivierung verändern, bzw. wie man diese Annahme mit psychoanalytischen Mitteln untersuchen kann. One aim of this paper is to bring to the surface the problems with the traditional, non-literal interpretation of the pre-cosmos in the Timaeus. Contrary to this traditional interpretation, I show that Necessity is an ateleological cause capable of bringing about the events in the pre-cosmos, and that Intelligence is a teleological cause that produces effects only for the sake of maximizing the good. I conclude that there are no grounds for supposing that Intelligence is a causal force operating in (...) the pre-cosmos, and that the account of the pre-cosmos should be taken literally: it is an account of the works of Necessity alone. Pharmakologisches „cognition enhancement“ zielt auf die Verbesserung der geistigen Leistungsfähigkeit mithilfe von Präparaten, die primär als Medikamente eingesetzt werden. Der Beitrag befasst sich mit der ethischen Bewertung des Gebrauchs von Stimulanzien als „enhancer“ durch Kinder und Jugendliche. Am Beispiel von Diagnose und Behandlung der Aufmerksamkeitsdefizit-Hyperaktivitätsstörung (ADHS) werden die Schwierigkeiten der Abgrenzung von Therapie und Enhancement beschrieben und daraus auf verschiedenen Ebenen ethisch relevante Fragen bezüglich Cognition enhancement entwickelt. Diese betreffen z. B. die Wirkungen von Stimulanzien auf ein sich entwickelndes System (...) und eine mögliche grundlegende Änderung der Erziehungs- und Sozialisationssituation durch pharmakologisches Enhancement, aber auch das Problem der Normierung von Verhalten und der Einschränkung der Autonomie der Betroffenen. Die vorgestellten Überlegungen geben Anlass, Cognition enhancement durch Stimulanzien im Jugendbereich vorläufig kritisch zu beurteilen. (shrink)

Eloise Jelinek was a leading authority on syntactic and semantic theory, information structure, and several Native American languages (including Lummi, Yaqui, and Navajo). She was one of the very first generative linguists who brought the theoretical implications of the properties of typologically unusual and understudied languages to the forefront of mainstream generative thinking.Jelinek originated the Pronominal Argument Hypothesis the idea that many languages restrict realization of their arguments to pronouns. In other work, Jelinek investigated a broad range (...) of morphological, syntactic and semantic phenomena in understudied and endangered languages. Besides the theoretical value of that work, it was instrumental in providing sophisticated semantic and syntactic documentation for such languages, where description is typically limited to the basic morphophonology and morphosyntax, as well as texts, that form the core of most descriptive work.Thirteen of her most important papers, together with a fourteenth essay previously unpublished, are here collected, each preceded by a short introduction that provides context for the work and evidence of its subsequent influence.
