Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by dysfunctional processing of nociceptive stimulation. Neuroimaging studies have pointed out that pain-related network functioning seems to be altered in these patients. It is thought that this clinical symptomatology may be maintained or even strengthened because of an enhanced expectancy for painful stimuli or its forthcoming appearance. However, neural electrophysiological correlates associated with such attentional mechanisms have been scarcely explored. In the current study, expectancy processes of upcoming laser stimulation (painful and non-painful) and (...) its further processing were explored by event-related potentials (ERPs). Nineteen fibromyalgia patients and twenty healthy control volunteers took part in the experiment. Behavioral measures (reaction times and subjective pain perception) were also collected. We manipulated the pain/no pain expectancy through an S1–S2 paradigm (cue-target). S1 (image: triangle or square) predicted the S2 appearance (laser stimulation: warmth or pinprick sensation). Laser stimuli were delivered using a CO2 laser device. Temporal and spatial principal component analyses were employed to define and quantify the ERP component reliability. Statistical analyses revealed the existence of an abnormal pattern of pain expectancy in patients with fibromyalgia. Specifically, our results showed attenuated amplitudes at posterior lCNV component in anticipation of painful stimulation that was not found in healthy participants. In contrast, although larger P2 amplitudes to painful compared to innocuous events were shown, patients did not show any amplitude change in this laser-evoked response as a function of pain predictive cues (as occurred in the healthy control group). Additionally, analyses of the subjective perception of pain and reaction time indicated that laser stimuli preceded by pain cues were rated as more painful than those signaling non-pain expectancy and were associated with faster responses. Differences between groups were not found. The present findings suggest the presence of dysfunction in pain expectation mechanisms in fibromyalgia that eventually may make it difficult for patients to correctly interpret signs that prevent pain symptoms. Furthermore, the abnormal pattern in pain expectancy displayed by fibromyalgia patients could result in ineffective pain coping strategies. Understanding the neural correlates of pain processing and its modulatory factors is crucial to identify treatments for chronic pain syndromes. (shrink)

After having accomplished an observation of the different problematic that affect the daily life of our city, as reflect of what happens in the rest of the national territory, we have been attracted to implement a juridical analysis to the situation of the donation and organ transplantation in the legal ambit of our country, with the objective to identify the level of efficacy and the normative scope with respect to the situation of people who need a transplant. This restlessness born (...) from the analysis of the law 1716 and its regulation, which ambiguously delimits the functions of the centers of health in what respect to this topic, also to establish the creation of a waiting list and a record, tool which objective would be norm the permanent supply of organs through donation programs. These do not accomplish their objective or being attached to a public policy in the ambit that allow the continuity of the institutions and benefit of the people in need. (shrink)

This chapter defends a version of the indexical contextualist form of moderate relativism: the attempt to endorse appearances of faultless disagreement within the framework in which a sentence at a context at the index of the context determines its appropriate truth-value. Many object that any such an indexical proposal would fail to account for intuitions of (genuine) disagreement as revealed in ordinary disputes in the domain. The main goal of this paper is to argue that Anglo-American philosophy and Continental philosophy should work together within the arena of the philosophy of sport. To do so, the concept “communicative community”, which is found in Habermas’ and Apel’s discursive ethics, will be analyzed and applied to sports. As several authors, such as Raúl Sebastian Solanes, Robert L. Simon and William J. Morgan, have done this task before, I will critically analyze their proposals. In so doing, I will show (...) that in order to make sense of contemporary sports we need a more integrative communicative sporting community than the ones proposed so far in the literature. RESUMEN La medicina tradicional herbolaria desde su evolución hasta la contemporaneidad ha sido objeto de uso para la medicina convencional. Por eso el objetivo del trabajo es describir el comportamiento de la medicina tradicional herbolaria en los sistemas de salud convencionales. Se realizó la búsqueda y análisis documental de numerosas fuentes sobre la temática pertenecientes a las bases de datos SciELO Cuba, SciELO Regional, Science Direct, Clinical Key, Cumed, Lilacslo. Se concluye que la actualidad social registra manifestaciones alentadoras en el (...) campo de la aceptación de la herbolaria como medicina complementaria por el equipo de salud y un renovado interés en el ámbito mundial por estudiar los efectos que tienen las plantas sobre la salud. ABSTRACT The traditional herbalist medicine from its evolution to the contemporaneity has been an object use for the conventional medicine. That's why the objective of the work is to describe the behavior of the traditional herbalist medicine in the conventional health systems. A search and documentary analysis of numerous sources on the subject-matter belonging to the databases SciELO Cuba, SciELO Regional, Science Direct, Clinical Key, Cumed, Lilacslo was carried out. It is concluded that the social actuality registers encouraging declarations in the field of the acceptance of the herbalist as complementary medicine for the team of health and a renewed interest in the world ambience to study the effects that have the plants on the health. In most domains of human life, we are willing to accept that there are experts with greater knowledge and competencies that distinguish them from non-experts or laypeople. Despite this fact, the very recognition of expertise curiously becomes more controversial in the case of “moral experts”. Do moral experts exist? And, if they indeed do, are there ethical reasons for us to follow their advice? Likewise, can emerging technological developments broaden our very concept of moral expertise? In this article, we begin (...) by arguing that the objections that have tried to deny the existence (and convenience) of moral expertise are unsatisfactory. After that, we show that people have ethical reasons to ask for a piece of moral advice in daily life situations. Then, we argue that some Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems can play an increasing role in human morality by becoming moral experts. Some AI-based moral assistants can qualify as artificial moral experts and we would have good ethical reasons to use them. (shrink)

Social Education implies a constant exposition to human experiences of vulnerability and suffering. In this paper, Levinas’s philosophy of alterity and, specifically, the notion of hospitality constitutes our ethical lens to explore educational encounters in non-formal contexts within the Spanish Social Sector. The study is developed from a hermeneutic phenomenological approach into the depth of lived experiences of eight social educators who currently work with different populations groups. The testimonies, explored through semi-structured interviews, are presented in a conversational, dialogic, poetic (...) format. First, Levinas’ philosophy is presented as our ethical position, focusing on subjectivity as hospitality. Secondly, methodological aspects regarding hermeneutics are addressed. Finally, the testimonies of social educators are presented in an evocative way, exploring uncertainty and three different tensions regarding human relations in their practices: physical spaces, affection, and embodiment. Synthetic biology is a cutting-edge area of research that holds the promise of unprecedented health benefits. However, in tandem with these large prospective benefits, synthetic biology projects entail a risk of catastrophic consequences whose severity may exceed that of most ordinary human undertakings. This is due to the peculiar nature of synthetic biology as a ‘threshold technology’ which opens doors to opportunities and applications that are essentially unpredictable. Fears about these potentially unstoppable consequences have led to declarations from civil society (...) groups calling for the use of a precautionary principle to regulate the field. Moreover, the principle is prevalent in law and international agreements. Despite widespread political recognition of a need for caution, the precautionary principle has been extensively criticized as a guide for regulatory policy. We examine a central objection to the principle: that its application entails crippling inaction and incoherence, since whatever action one takes there is always a chance that some highly improbable cataclysm will occur. In response to this difficulty, which we call the ‘precautionary paradox,’ we outline a deliberative means for arriving at threshold of probability below which potential dangers can be disregarded. In addition, we describe a Bayesian mechanism with which to assign probabilities to harmful outcomes. We argue that these steps resolve the paradox. The rehabilitated PP can thus provide a viable policy option to confront the uncharted waters of synthetic biology research. (shrink)

Summary The purpose of this study was to illustrate and analyze the organizational change the Swedish voluntary sports club IF Björklöven went through in connection with the corporation formation of its representative team. The study was made with institutional theory as a theoretical frame of reference. Particularly important for the shaping of the study was a theoretical model by Greenwood and Hinings. The data was collected using semi-structured interviews with seven respondents representing different parts of the organization. The results show (...) that the change process was driven and enabled for the most part by the offer of SEK 22.5 million from an external financier. The restructuring has brought about a change in the way Björklöven thinks about the outcome, purpose, structure and goals of the organization, now that the organization is moving towards a more market-oriented way of organizing. Perguntamos quais são as regras mínimas que um conectivo deve satisfazer para que seja considerado uma negação genuína. Tomaremos como referência para tratar dessa questão os C-sistemas de Newton da Costa e o sistema LP de Graham Priest. Finalmente, (...) analisaremos esses sistemas na lógica de sequentes a fim de mostrar que a negação paraconsistente ou bem carece das regras puras de eliminação e negação da negação ou ela envolve outros conectivos, o que torna difícil atribuir um significado unívoco à negação paraconsistente. En De Beryllo, el tema de la quididad se problematiza, como hemos dicho, en el marco de una revision de la tradicion y, mas especificamente con relacion a este tema, de la critica a la perspectiva aristotelica, Critica que toma como punto de partida, la imposibilidad de la tradicion respecto de alcanzar el Primer Principio, en razon de la dificultad de la mayoria de los filosofos para superar los contrarios, unicamente mas alla de los cuales puede ser visto tal principio.

Para definir un nuevo horizonte del pensar originario, para establecer posibles salidas a la tan enunciada crisis de lo humano y la cultura, es necesario convocar la tarea de repensar las viejas cuestiones metafísicas en una nueva forma. En la actualidad se asiste a una tarea de reflexión tanto en la filosofía como en las humanidades, que convoca una nueva manera de entender el pensar sin los vestigios de la racionalidad instrumental. Es al emprender esta tarea renovadora del sentido humano (...) que el llamado giro teológico de la fenomenología aporta la relación mística-pensamiento, pensar-acontecer, y restablece la dimensión originaria de lo dado. Dominique Janicaud considera que la fenomenología francesa contemporánea ha hecho un giro teológico al introducir al Dios judeocristiano en la fenomenología; pero realmente se ha dado un giro hacia la razón mística redescubriendo el neoplatonismo de Dionisio Areopagita, la interioridad de San Agustín y el pensamiento del último Heidegger. Ante la realidad que circunda, son muchas las voces que denuncian una ruptura entre el espíritu humano y el desarrollo de la cultura. Es inevitable pensar que en la universidad y en la academia pareciese estar presente dicha separación. La universidad y su identidad de lugar para el encuentro y la búsqueda de la verdad humana está siendo asaltada por aquel esquema de empresa al servicio del liberalismo capitalista que denuncia Nussbaum (2010 38), a propósito del informe de la comisión (...) sobre el futuro de la educación superior en Estados Unidos, que le da a la educación la misión de moldear el desarrollo nacional, en términos de crecimiento económico. Los múltiples debates que se han instaurado deben causar una actitud de resistencia a un modelo que instrumentaliza lo que ha defendido la universidad como espacio del sentido y dejan claro una vocación empresarial en la educación superior que la ha convertido en un nodo productivo que ocupa un lugar importante en el crecimiento económico. En los escenarios universitarios cada vez resulta menos extraño toparse con investigaciones que indagan por la escritura filosófica proveniente de centros no hegemónicos de producción de conocimiento. Nosotros, que hemos tenido la oportunidad de acercarnos al pasado del ejercicio de la filosofía en el actual territorio colombiano, quisimos hacer una convocatoria pública de escritos dedicados a identificar temas, preguntas y formas en que la variopinta comunidad de la filosofía local está escribiendo su propia historia.

RESUMEN Introducción: la implementación del sistema de gestión de la calidad en el Centro de Inmunología y Productos Biológicos no ha producido los resultados esperados. Objetivo: exponer factores que afectan la implementación del mismo. Métodos: se realizó un estudio descriptivo exploratorio a través de encuesta de enero a mayo de 2018 en el Centro de Inmunología y Productos Biológicos de la Universidad de Ciencias Médicas Carlos J. Finlay de Camagüey, Cuba. El universo de las personas involucradas fue de 31, a (...) estos se les realizó un cuestionario de 16 preguntas estructuradas. Esta encuesta fue analizada con los métodos test re-test y Alpha de Cronbach. Resultados: las respuestas a la encuesta reflejaron que no se ha logrado integrar en el sistema de gestión de la calidad a todas las actividades del centro, no se logra la motivación intrínseca y extrínseca para su implementación, se evidenció liderazgo de ordeno y mando, persistía la opinión de que con los manuales de organización y una estructura jerarquizada se lograrían los resultados esperados, los directivos no aportan todo su potencial a este trabajo, los beneficiarios no se han convertido en participantes ni han constituido redes rizomas con alta comunicación entre sí y estilo de trabajo auto-organizado y no se han sistematizado actividades participativas en busca de consenso de equipo. Conclusiones: se identificaron factores que afectan la implementación del sistema de gestión de la calidad y se propone un cambio de paradigma hacia la integración de saberes para lograr de manera sustentable los cambios deseados. ABSTRACT Introduction: The implementation of the system of management of the quality in the Center of Immunology and Biological Products has not produced the expected results. Target: to exhibit factors that affect the implementation of the system. Methods: An exploratory descriptive study was carried out through a survey from January until May, 2018 in the Center of Immunology and Biological Products of the University of Medical Sciences of Camagüey, Cuba. The universe shaped by 31 persons to whom there was applied a survey, which was analyzed by the methods of test re-test and Alpha of Cronbach. Results: The answers to the survey reflected that all the activities of the center have not been integrated to the system of management of the quality, the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation is not achieved for its implementation. It was demonstrated leadership of order and control and it persisted the opinion that with the manuals of organization and a hierarchical structure would achieve the expected results. The managers do not contribute all their potential to this work, the beneficiaries neither have turned into participants nor have constituted networks rhizome with high communication among themselves and style of self-organized work and participative activities have not been systematized in search of team consensus. Discussion: There were identified factors that affect the implementation of the system of management of the quality and a change of paradigm is proposed towards the knowledge integration to achieve sustainably the wished changes. The spirit of the Second Vatican Council can be expressed in three terms that summarize its tremendous effort: faithful, pastoral and modern. In this spirit, the Church sought to deal with doctrinal questions in a new way, preferring mercy to severity. In agreement with this spirit of the Council, Paul VI transformed the Congregation of the Holy Office into the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith and suppressed the Index of prohibited books. The inclusion of many modern philosophers shows that (...) the relation between modern philosophical thought and Catholic theology has been difficult, most likely due to the principle of immanence at the heart of modern thought. The article, then, analyzes and evaluates the metaphysical, gnoseological and ethical themes that stem from the assumption of the principle of immanence in some modern philosophers. However, the suppression of the Index shows that the essential continuity, faithfulness to the faith, is able to be accompanied by the accidental reform, as pastoral requirement and modernization.
